Brighton-based band, Black Honey is a high-octane
indie rock group led by Izzy Baxter that delivers
a coaxing, flirtatious voice on top of catchy,
surf-pop sounds.
Photography by Cory Ingram
Words by Melissa Rodwell
Guitarist Chris Ostler, bass player Tommy
Taylor and Tom Dewhurst on drums complete
the four piece shoegazer band. They are
definitely one of the indie bands to watch
for in 2017. Although they prefer to be
“a secret band and live under the radar”,
fortunately for us they have produced
songs with mass appeal.
Their Spotify plays are fast approaching
the million mark. With songs like “Corrine”
which is an apology to Baxter’s best friend
who moved away to Ibiza,— to “Madonna”,
the band delivers ultra sexy, deep moving,
somewhat psychedelic vibes.
You can sense their desire to be
misunderstood and not famous.
They’re just too fucking good to
go unnoticed.
Izzy might sound like Lana Del Rey
(we guess, hmmmm) we like to think
of her as the Lana you wouldn’t take
home to meet your parents.

pretty vicious
It all started with a song on Soundcloud. With
just one year later, four Welsh teenagers have
been skyrocketed into international stardom
with the release of their single Cave Song.
Garnering enough massive attention
to obtain a headlining spot at Glastonbury,
Pretty Vicious shows no signs
of slowing down. Within that year
they have opened for the likes of Noel
Gallagher, Wolf Alice and The Vaccines
and have scored a major record deal
with Virgin EMI Records.
All before the youngest of them was
even old enough to order a pint at his
local pub. The group formed in 2014
and consists of guitarist and lead singer
Brad Griffiths, guitarist Thomas McCarthy,
bassist Jarvis Morgan and drummer
Elliot Jones - all four hailing from small
town, Merthyr Tydfil, in South Wales.
They are a fresh organic sound in a land
of processed music, the rock and roll
band we’ve been looking for since the
likes of The Arctic Monkeys. Debut album
set to release in 2017, with the plans for
an American tour underway so keep an
eye (and an ear) out for this band and
their massive sound.

wolf alice
Music is an ever changing force of nature.
The same can be said for Wolf Alice, a four-piece
alternative rock band out of North London.
Forming in 2010 with Ellie Roswell and
Joff Oddie as a duo, over the years the
band formed the foursome adding the
talents of Theo Ellis who plays bass
and Joel Amey on the drums.
The inspiration for the bands name
is as lyrical and magical as the music
they produce, stemming from the
short story by Angela Carter, a fable
akin to “Little Red Riding Hood” and
“Through the Looking Glass”.
The name seems to suit them with
crippling guitar riffs supporting Ellie’s
lilting lyrical prowess, which has been
described as an angelic voice that howls
like a wolf. Theirs is a sound as unique as
the name that inspired them.
Their debut album, My Love Is Cool,
reached number 2 on the charts in the
UK and their sophomore album is scheduled
to be released this year in 2017. You
can be sure of one thing with Wolf Alice,
their sound is ever changing like the forces
of nature that continue to move music
forward. Follow us into oblivion.

sigur
ros
How does one even begin to talk
about Sigur Ros’s music, much
less the experience of seeing them
perform live? It’s almost too much to
take in; it’s a complete masterpiece
unfolding and being created right in
front of your eyes.
Photography and Words by JANA EARLY
Sigur Ros is a 3 piece band, if you can even call
them that, they seem like so much more, like they
are magicians or gods creating something brand
new. They are unlike any other band out there.
The tour, “Takk,” meaning thank you
in Icelandic, has the band stripped
down far more than ever regarding the
amount of people on the stage; however,
Sigur Rós was not found lacking
in any sense of the word in regards
to both performance and sound. The
band brings as much passion and creativity
as ever before.
No, Sigur Ros performs in such a way
that brings in several forms of art work
to the stage. The visual performance
of Sigur Ros is simply captivating.
For those reading this who have
followed their music for any amount
of time now are not surprised by the
above statement.
The Paramount Theater in Seattle was
quickly filling up and you could honestly
feel the anticipation from all of
the fans, as they knew what they were
about to experience. Even the other
photographers, as well as myself, were
all in the “pit” overwhelmed by the
task of trying to capture such a work
of art. The first three songs were performed
in a very dark setting, with all
attention on Jonsi’s voice.
It was as if Sigur Ros was allowing
us all to slowly be drawn in to what
we were all about to experience. For
those who have followed Sigur Ros
for any time, you know that their live
shows aren’t only about the music.
Year after year, record after record,
Sigur Ros continues to push the envelope
regarding whatever genre of music
it is that they are actually playing.
The airy dreamy ambient stuff filled
with highs and lows is mixed head on
with heavy pounding driving rock that
seems to bring possibly a larger audience
in. And, of course, the stage and
lighting is second to none as expected.
It is quite obvious that these artists
pour every bit of themselves into their
music, the show, their art.
They have been and will continue to
be among the “must see” staple bands
of any serious listener of modern music.
Once again, Sigur Ros scores 100.

Weathers
Indie rock band from Los Angeles, Weathers
formed when lead singer Cameron Olsen
and guitarist met in 2012 at a local Battle
of the Bands in Manhattan Beach, California.
Their unsettled moody songs permeate
deeper feelings in the listener
than heavier rock groups
Recruiting bass player Brennan Bates
and drummer Cole Carson, the band
finally formed in 2015 & have released
two singles “I Don’t Wanna Know”
and “Happy Pills”.
“Happy Pills” peaked at #21 on the
Billboard Alternative Songs chart!
Admitting they are part of the post-
Millennial Generation Z, they are part
of their generation that is deeply
immersed in a media-saturated culture
and were kids that grew up in an
insecure world, raised by financially
stressed parents. Their unsettled
moody songs permeate deeper feelings
in the listener than heavier rock
groups that just want to scream and
forget about shit.
Alice’s Photo Editor caught them at
Webster Hall to shoot the band live.
The band’s performance was unforgettable
and they are definitely a
band to watch out for.

Everybody remembers where he or
she was when they heard a song for
the first time that resonated so deep
within them, they knew for a fact they
were going to listen to that song for
the rest of their life.
Such is the case when I first heard
Blame Candy’s “When I Was Cool.” I
was sitting at my desk on a summer
day, distracted with something other
than Alice, when I got an email from
Cory Ingram with a link to Blame Candy’s
EP. The email was simple: “Hey!
Have you ever heard of these guys?
What do you think?”
I clicked on the link. Faced with 4
choices, “Life Like You,” “Hush,”
“When I Was Cool” and “Toxic Boy,”
I went with “When I Was Cool.” It
starts off dreamy, a little psychedelic,
is this going to be a shoegazing
song? Wait, here comes some harder
guitar riffs, hmmm… some melodic
twists, definitely not that psychedelic,
maybe more hypnotic. But wait, what
the fuck? What’s happening with this
bridge? This brilliant thing happened,
really just a key change, but it felt next
level genius. Like, Oasis genius. Okay,
they’re young, so let’s call it Jason
Faulkner genius. No, this is next level
shit and I’m calling it like it is. Oasis
genius.
I listened to “When I Was Cool” on
repeat about 40 times. I emailed Cory
back, saying “Yeah, they’re pretty cool,
let’s put them in the magazine.” Cory
told me they not only sound great but
they also have “great style.”
People often think that because I’m a
fashion photographer, a band’s style
is more important to me than the
band’s music. They couldn’t be more
wrong. While style is definitely important,
I fell in love with rock and roll
music long before I held a camera in
my hands. It’s the music first, always.
So off I went to some small town near
Vienna, Virginia to see Blame Candy
for the first time. Ever heard of Vienna,
Virginia? Yeah, me neither. But man
was it worth it. I brought my cynical
boyfriend with me, the one who
graduated with a masters in music,
so he’s a music snob. We watched
Blame Candy hit the stage and were
starstruck. I just shook my head and
thought to myself, “Man, this is like the
time you saw that unknown band Van
Halen play at your best friend’s sister’s
graduation party in Pasadena and
years later got to tell people that you
heard ‘Runnin’ with The Devil’ for the
first time at a backyard BBQ graduation
party.” Now I’ll be able to say,
“You know, I saw Blame Candy when
they played this dive bar in Vienna,
Virginia.”
I love watching kids’ eyes get wide.
Here’s a little interview I did with lead
singer/guitarist Chris Greatti and guitarist
Aaron Deming (sans bassist
Ryan Wheeler & drummer Sam Palombo)
on a Tuesday night via Facetime
(I truly hate Facetime, but I digress)
while the boys eat bananas and drink
whiskey and I pull an 18-hour work
day. Well worth the listen, these
boys are going to blow up the world.
Trust me, I know.
MR: That’s really beautiful actually. It must
be hard, though, being in the public eye and
having to push yourselves out there on social
media to gain attention, so how do you handle
all that aside from the constant reminder
and using your songs to guide your souls?
Aaron Deming: We’ve built a bomb shelter/
recording studio/rehearsal space in South
Jersey. We’ve been bunkered down for over a
year with minimal distractions.
Chris: We are lovers of all music& are inspired
by those who give their passion a chance.
With my lyrics, I strive to inspire others to do
what they want to do and be who they want
to be.
Aaron: Individuality is the only way art in
2017 and beyond is going to flourish & perpetuate
the creation of more, inspiring art.
We are lovers of all music and are inspired
by those who give their passion
a chance. With my lyrics, I strive to
inspire others to do what they want to
do and be who they want to be.
MR: Because I’ve had the pleasure of
getting to know you a little bit from our photo
shoot and from seeing you guys play live,
I know that this isn’t your first time at the
rodeo. What experiences have you learned
from the past that you have taken with you
into Blame Candy?
Chris Greatti: In past musical endeavors,
I’ve struggled dealing with people who didn’t
share the same goals and values as myself.
That struggle hindered creativity and made
staying true to what made me love music in
the first place very challenging. When Blame
Candy was formed, I knew, at the very least, I
wanted the band to be the antithesis of that -
we make the music we want to make and we
respect each other.
MR: Your single, “Life Like You,” has gotten
incredible response from the media. I see
and hear it everywhere, which is great, by the
way. Can you tell us about the song?
Chris: “Life Like You” is about people I’ve
come across in life who use others to get
ahead - the type who’ll pretend to be your
friend to get something from you, then
disappear when you need them most. It can
be easy to slip into a similar mindset of
people you’ve spent lots of time with, so a line
like “I’m not gonna live my life like you” comes
in handy. I write lyrics that remind me to be
the best version of myself.
MR: Speaking of distractions, what are your
feelings about love?
Chris: Love is the most beautiful and powerful
source in the universe. It’s undeniably the
answer to most of our problems.
MR: What song do you like to play live the
most?
Chris: One of our newest numbers, called
“Sweet Relief.”
MR: (while searching the internet to find it)
Wait, is it online?
Chris: (laughing) Not just yet, my dear. A
live teaser can be found on Alice’s Instagram
page. All will be revealed soon!
MR: I really love the melody and hook in
“When I Was Cool.” When I first heard the
song I played it over and over again, maybe
40 times. Tell me how the song came about.
Chris: Aaron and I were sledding last year
and the chorus melody came to me out of
nowhere. We had been listening to a lot of
Bowie. As for the bridge, we get bored staying
in the same key for entire songs so we cut
up letters out of magazines, lay them on a
table and pick one at random. Fate led us to
the key of F sharp.
MR: Really? Just like that, huh?
Chris: Just like that.
MR: So, the name Blame Candy?
Aaron: Let’s leave the readers at home to
their own interpretations.
