Rarity - Historical Villa
from 1893
A-4820 Bad Ischl - Austria - Salzkammergut
Presented at the World Exposition in
Chicago in 1893....
A magnificent villa of cultural significance, in the Arts & Crafts style that can tell many extraordinary stories and
is full of interesting history.
Originally planned and built in Germany using a special wooden construction method, the villa was shipped across the
Atlantic Sea to Chicago to be exhibited at the World Exposition (1) because of its uniqueness.
After the expo the villa was returned to Europe, ending up in Austria. But how come?
Love at First Sight
Oscar Blumenthal (2), the famous Berlin drama critic and playwright visited the expo in Chicago and instantly fell in love
with this unusual building. He bought it, had it disassembled and shipped back to Europe.
His choice for a special place to re-erect the villa fell to Bad Ischl, the summer residence of the Austrian emperor Franz
Joseph I (4) from 1849 to 1914.
Bad Ischl – The Heart of Salzkammergut
Bad Ischl is wellknown as a place of historic significance. It was here that in 1853 Emperor Franz Joseph got engaged to
Elisabeth (Sisi) of Bavaria (5). Since the summer of 1863 the famous composer Anton Bruckner (6) would come for the
Emperor’s birthday and other festivities as a royal organist. In addition to the imperial family and Oscar Blumenthal, Bad
Ischl was also the summer destination for many popular composers of that era, such as Johann Strauß (7), Franz Lehár
(8) und Johannes Brahms (9). Other musicians also used to spend their summers here at the turn of the century — many
of them probably just because they wanted to be near the court. Thus, Bad Ischl developed into a world-renowned
meeting point for many artists during the Habsburg monarchy (10). The tradition is still alive today: during the summer
months each year the famous operetta festival (11) takes place here.
Historical Monument
To ensure this very special villa remains in its original style, the current owner applied in 1983 to put it under the control
of the Federal Agency for the Preservation of Historical Monuments.
Furniture, Furnishings, Paintings, etc.
With few exceptions, all furniture, paintings, rugs, and curtains, as well as all lighting fixtures shall remain in place, as
they are part of an elegant ensemble, contributing nicely to the charm of this residence. There will be no extra charge for
these furnishings.
An Oasis of Well-Being
... that will surely take you back in time
Experience it for yourself. You enter the building and can feel it –
time must have stood still for 100 years. The pleasant atmosphere,
its soothing tranquility - is indescribable. While you are still in the
foyer, your eyes wander up the staircase to the highest point of the
roof – to the small tower. Truly impressive.
Then as you head to the comfortable parlor, you feel immediately
attracted by the pretty tiled stove which promises cozy warmth on
winter days. You then look at the beautiful dining room with a cozy
bay window, the terrace door and the veranda. The elegant doors are
eye-catchers, along with the wood-paneled walls, high ceilings, and
the tasteful interior – a dazzling experience. You take a seat at the
table and take a deep breath. Your first impression: ”this is a truly
beautiful place….”
Security
According to statistics, Austria is one of the
safest countries worldwide; this is particularly
true for Bad Ischl and the entire Salzkammergut.
As there is no such thing as 100% security, the
current owner installed an elaborate alarm
system with several video cameras. This may
have been the reason why nobody has ever
tried to break into the building, despite the fact
that it has not been occupied at various times of
the year.
