Huai Phak Phai Royal Project
Development Center (Thung Roeng).
Initiated by the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej in 1980, Huai
Phak Phai station focuses on rose research. Its highlight is
the Royal Rose Garden which covers an area of over 8 acres
where various kinds of roses have been planted. The best
time to visit is from October until end of February. It is also a
camping place.

passionate Victoria Vorreiter offers
a curator’s walk through the exhibition
at Tamarind Village Chiang Mai
each Friday from 15:00-16.00 hrs,
until the end of February
(advance reservation highly recommended).

resulting in the publication of “Hmong Songs of Memory”
book, along with a 75 minute etnographic film.
When asked about the importance of her research in the

Hmong have depended on oral tradition to transmit history
and their beliefs from one generation to the next for centuries.
How long these customs can continue is in doubt. The aim of
my work is to help to safeguard the knowledge of these tribal
rituals and musical traditions before they are forgotten.” And in
order to better spread the word, passionate Victoria Vorreiter
offers a curator’s walk through the exhibition at Tamarind
Village Chiang Mai each Friday from 15:00-16:00 hrs,
until the end of February (advance reservation highly
recommended). This weekly event gives you the opportunity
to meet with Ms Vorreiter and being lectured by herself on
various details in every part of this Hmong exhibition.

“Hmong Songs of Memory, Hmong Threads of Life: Secular &
Sacred Music & Textiles”, is the all-new exhibition at Tamarind
Village Chiang Mai, by American researcher, writer and
film maker Victoria Vorreiter. The exhibition explores the
music and textile traditions of the Hmong, an ethnic minority
that originated in Siberia and Mongolia and migrated into
southwest China and the mountainous areas of Southeast
Asia including Laos, Thailand and Vietnam over many centuries.
The free-entry exhibition is comprised of a selection of
rare photographs taken by Ms. Vorreiter, over a decade
on her numerous research trips to remote Hmong villages,
documenting little-known shamanic rituals, daily life scenes
and offering striking ethnographic portraits of a proud and
diverse people. In addition to the photographs, there are also
a fascinating number of rare artefacts on display alongside
musical instruments and textiles.
The rich textile traditions of the Hmong, whose various
sub-groups (Blue, Black, White and Striped) are named for
the predominant color of their costumes have long been
renowned. Embroidery, appliqué and batik indicate status
and identity within the extended community. Ms Vorreiter’s
collection of Hmong costumes and beautifully-crafted textiles are
also on view at Tamarind Village with descriptions in English and
in Thai.
A trained classical musician and former lecturer at DePaul
University School of Music in Chicago, Ms Vorreiter turned
her attention to the primal role music plays in traditional
culture more than a decade ago. Since then she has travel to
remote parts of Thailand, Laos, China and Myanmar in order
to document and study the little known music of the region’s
tribal people. She has published a beautiful book “Songs of

Doi Suthep in Quiet Moments
O
verlooking the city of Chiang Mai, the 5,283-foot mountain
called Doi Suthep is part of the twin-peaked Doi Suthep-Doi Pui
National Park. There was no proper road up the mountain until
the mid-1930’s, when a monk named Phra Khruba Srivichai
initiated the construction of one, mainly with volunteer labor, to
help pilgrims who wanted to visit the famous Wat Phra That Doi
Suthep near the summit. This temple offers spectacular views
and much lower temperatures even in the hottest months.
Wat Phra That Doi Suthep is one of the most beautiful temples
in the North of Thailand, but it is also one of the most famous
amongst visitors. If you wish to discover this beautiful temple in a
quiet and more private atmosphere, get there early in the morning.
Before 8am the temple is very silent, still bathed in the light of the
sunrise and blissfully empty. If you arrive around 7am, you will
also have the pleasure of seeing monks returning by foot from
the city for their morning alms ceremonies.
Another magical moment of the day to discover Doi Suthep
Temple is in the evening. The evening monks chanting ceremony
is an unforgettable moment to witness (around 18.00).
As Doi Suthep Temple has public opening times, you might
want to contact your hotel’s receptionist and arrange a tour for
these two private moments.

onstruction of Doi Suthep temple began in 1386 under
King Kuena and was completed within a few years. The temple
complex was periodically expanded and embellished over the
following centuries.
According to legend, holy relics discovered during the reign
of King Ku Na (1355-85) were placed on the back of a white
elephant, which transported them to near by Wat Suan Dok.
The elephant was then set free to wander, and it climbed the
mountain to the site of the actual temple, were it trumpeted three
times, turned around three times, knelt down and then died. The
temple was immediately built on the miraculously chosen site.
Wat Doi Suthep is approached by a steep flight of 300 stairs
flanked by green trees and guarded by 16th-century Naga
(mystic snake) figures. An easier, if less atmospheric, route is via
an adjacent cable car.
Enclosed by a frescoed cloister, the upper terrace is home to a
tightly-packed complex of small shrines, bells, golden umbrellas
and Buddha statues. In the center of the upper terrace is the great
chedi, a 16th-century expansion of the 14th-century original.
The dazzling gold plated temple is modeled on Wat Phra That
Haripunchai in Lamphun (build in the 9th century).
The temple is part of the Doi Suthep National Park, and
surrounded by forest and rich jungle, supporting some 330 species
of birds. From the temple’s lower terrace, you will see spectacular
views over the city of Chiang Mai.

Are you living in or renting a private property in Thailand as
a foreigner? Or simply have someone staying in your property
that is not a Thai national? If so, you need to feel in the TM30
card at your nearest immigration office.
While this law has been on the books for years (hotels and
guest houses have always reported guest names and passport
numbers), the enforcement of it has now been expanded
to include private properties. This law is call TM30 and
states that all properties that have non-Thai nationals living
on their premises must register them with the immigration
department. This has to be done even if the non-Thai national
regularly reports for 90 days and has a multi-entry visa. The
recent enforcement comes partly in the wake of the worldwide
increase in terrorism and maybe also to crackdown on the
number of foreigners who have over-stayed their visa.
Basically, from now on, anyone who offers accommodations
must register their foreign guests with the immigration
department within 24 hours of the time of their arrival.
This applies to landlords, condo owners, familly members,
girlfriends or boyfriends owning the house/condo in which you
are living. And registration should be done again every time the
foreigner re-enter the country.
Ongoing non-compliance can be costly for the private property
owner or for you. Fines are around THB 1,600 for every instance
of non registration.
Long-term tenants usually find out they have not been
registered when they pop down to immigration to do their
90-day check in, or a visa renewal. So if you are in good
terms with your landlord and want to avoid trouble for both
of you, you might want to warm them before you make your
next trip to immigration. If your landlord cannot technically
make it to the nearest immigration office (he may be living
in another city), go to the immigration office by yourself and
try to report yourself alone. But do it quickly after you have
entered the country.
Papers that you should prepare:
For the landlord:
- a copy of the title deed of the property
- a copy of the rental contract
For the non-Thai national:
- copy of passport (photo page)
- copy of the visa page
- copy of departure card
Every time you leave Thailand and return with a new
arrival/departure card in your passport, you have to be
reposted again, because your departure card number has
changed (you are supposed to be reported within 24-hours
but 3-4 days should be ok).
In Chiang Mai, you should report at the immigration
office near the airport. It is in the building in the back of the
parking space.

Le Charcoa Hôtel
Une architecture Alsacienne en plein coeur de Chiang Mai
Nueng-Atitaya Kaewruaen fait partie de cette génération
d’hôteliers totalement imprégnés par leur métier, par leur hôtel,
qu’ils gèrent avec passion, presque avec dévotion.
Cette fille de couturière, née en 1980 à Chiang Mai, rencontre
son époux sur les bans de l’université d’architecture où ils
finissent leurs études ensemble. Ils trouvent tous deux rapidement
du travail dans cette branche, mais Nueng se découvre une
nouvelle passion : la pâtisserie. Elle commence par goûter, puis
s’essaye à la pâtisserie, et lorsqu’elle finit par passer tout son
salaire en achat d’accessoires et en cours, elle décide de faire
de cette passion une nouvelle vocation.
En 2004, elle ouvre Charcoa, un petit café, avec à la carte
uniquement ses quatre gâteaux préférés (dont le cheese cake).
Le succès est immédiat, et le café s’agrandit rapidement, afin de
mieux accueillir les clients, puis devient un restaurant-pâtisserie.
Situé en plein coeur de la ville de Chiang Mai, Charcoa est facile
d’accès et prisé aussi bien par les Thailandais que par les touristes.
Nueng et son époux décident alors de transformer le petit
immeuble derrière le restaurant en hôtel cosy et chaleureux. Ils se
mettent ensemble au travail et dessinent les plans avec passion:
12 chambres lovées au coeur de la ville, Charcoa devient
rapidement un hôtel-restaurant-pâtisserie très bien côté sur les
réseaux sociaux.
Si Nong, le mari de Nueng, continue son travail d’architecte, Nueng
se donne à fond dans la pâtisserie et l’hôtellerie. Tôt le matin
on peut la voir dans les cuisines, décorer ses gâteaux, essayer
de nouvelles recettes ou vérifier que le petit déjeuner de ses
clients se déroule bien. À partir de dix heures elle supervise les
arrivées et les départs des voyageurs. Dans l’après-midi on la
retrouve en cuisine.
En 2013, Nueng et son époux se remettent au travail ensemble.
Ils ont acheté un terrain près du temple Phra Sing et veulent
y construire un second hôtel. Elle retrouve alors sa première
passion: plans, notes, photos... C’est le début de trois ans de
travail et de recherches. Forte de son expérience à Charcoa,
elle veux que ce nouvel hôtel réponde à toutes les attentes de
ses clients: architecture, confort, sécurité... L’Hôtel Charcoa
sera comme une deuxième maison pour ses clients. Apres dix
huit mois de construction le résultat est époustouflant: poutres
apparentes et déco intérieure personnalisée à chaque étage,
piscine, literie de très haute qualité, insonorisation parfaite... trois
ans de travail pour les plans et 18 mois de construction: Nueng
surveille chacune des étapes. L’Hôtel Charcoa est maintenant
ouvert, et vous accueille chaque jour pour une nuit, ou pour un
petit déjeuner de qualité. Et ce style plait! Nueng nous a avoué
avoir été contactée pour créer de nouveaux hôtels dans d’autres
régions de Thailande.
