On April 17 1996. Jarvis held ou r fi rst ever Career Fair Day. The 

event was organized by the Guidance Department and a number of student 

volunteers and was held for two hours in the lower gym. The purpose 

ofthe Fair was to create a situation in which students would have the 

opportunity to gain a better knowledge of their career options and to ask 

que stion s they may have had con cerni ng job availability. training. education. 

salary. stress level ofjob and other concerns. The fair consisted of 

approximately 50 rep resentatives from a wide variety ofcareer paths. including 

engineering, medicine. the art s. the helping professions and many 

more. The representatives were assigned tables in different areas arranged 

by career clu ster. The fair was a great success and "

Co- 

Co-operative Education, or simply Co-op, is a program which 

was initiated in Toronto some time ago. It began at Jarvi s 

officially in the 1996-97 school year. 

Co-op is a program which allows students to earn outof-school 

credit s at work station s where the activities are specifically 

designed to 'tie in' with a subject the student is taking 

in school (or has recently taken ). There are a wide range of 

possible placements. These include work positions related to 

accounting, computer programming, chemistry, law, graphic 

communications , biology, photograp hy and journalism. 

The inaugural year at Jarvis has been a major success . 

Stude nts generally enjoy their work placements and is a welcome 

change from the confining halls of Jarvis. So get involved!

In April of '96. Mr. Lazare. Ms. ROIL Mr. Keenan. and Ms. Richardson 

kindly gave their time to take us on a trip to w ashington D.C. Along the way we 

stayed the night in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. where we visited the battle fields of 

Gettysburg. Upon arriving in Washington. D.C. we were received with a sign 

saying "Welcome Jarvis Cj." at rhe Holiday Inn. 

Along with our guide, we met a couple of wenches, many Americans, and a 

school group from France. Armed with 100 many kosher chocolates we were hyper 

for anything, including the Gettysburg Museum of Civil War, many monuments, 

the Supreme Court. Washington Memorial Monument, United States Senate, the 

Pentagon. Arlington Museum, United States Holocaust Museum, the F B.I. building. 

SI. Jamestown, Alexandria, and the Smuh soncon. 

In the end we gained friendship, experience, and saw a whole new world. 

Special thanks 10 the teachers from the students. It was great and our memories 

will live on forever.

I am a June bug, crashing 

aimlessly into windows . Once I have finally 

entered one, I can't help but bash against 

the four walls of the room I am in. It feels 

awful, to bump so hard but I go with all my

ofbeing very competitive in the 

TSSWAA league. Individually each 

person either received a medal or a 

ribbon. In the past because we were 

bigger in numbers we managed to be 

City Champs. We look forward to

ffhis year the Jarvis Boys Swim Team 

was one of many new faces and levels 

of talent. The few veterans that 

returned this year were met by a 

number of young enthusiastic swimmers 

who learned a great (leal unde r 

the coachin g of Mrs. Harvey who 

was also new to our school. Jarvis 

was very competitive throughout the 

season, and a select group also competed 

at OFSSAA. This young team 

has evidently proven itself among the 

ranks, and has a promising future .

Speed Swim 

The Girl s swim team had yet anothe r successful 

sea son this year. We could 1101 have done it 

without the enthusiastic support from coach 

Ms.Harvey and our breakie-o n-deckie Fridays! 

We had a lot of fun despite the frigid 'tarn water 

and for old and new members alike, feeding 

our chlorine addic tions every morning beca me 

a daily habit. Congratulations to those who

When you think of Jarvis' track team, 

you think speed. strength (and endless 

cham-pionships!) It goes beyond 

that. It takes dedication, determination 

and heart . Although most 

of the great runners from Jarvis had 

left. a junior championship was still 

won, thank s to the ded icated coaching 

of Mr. Munn. 

Another running year is 

over. We have twelve 

months before we have to 

run Killer Hill again wearing 

our extremely sexy

team moved up in the ranks to 

play in division A, which offered 

the best competition available and 

proved that we belonged there with 

our hard play and hustle. This 

couldn 't have been possible without 

the excellent coaching of Coach

with the dedication of the players.

Jarvis team, with this being our second 

year playing. The objective of 

the team is to develop the appropriate 

skills needed to advance to either 

Junior or Senior Volleyball. Last year 

the varsity team placed third overall, 

and this year's season should be just

Cricket is a game played by people 

in many countries. It includes skill, 

speed, sports manship and team 

work. If you are a person with these 

qualities come join this team and 

enjoy yourself.This year's Jarvis 

Cricket team has players from India. 

Pakistan, Sri-Lanka, Caribbean, 

Trinidad, Bangladesh, and Canada. 

The Bantams were as talented a 

group of athletes to play at Jarvis 

in a long time. They were ranked 

4th in Toronto prior to the playoffs 

and were undefeated in the 

playdowns. A bad call and two 

foul shots kept them from the City 

Championships. Stick together 

and keep the faith and we'll be a 

powerhouse in the near future .

This year's season started with practises starting in mid-February. 

The team combined veterans and rookies to form a team 

with much potential. An indoor soccer tournament in late March 

provided the team with a chance to develop their skills as a team, 

preparing them for the regular outdoor season, a season of heart 

and spirit leading, hopefully, to many successes. Many thanks to 

all those who helped the team to be successful.

Fond Farewells 

The retirement of Mrs. Patricia Agius is a great loss to the students of Jarvis C. I. As 

an English and E. S. L. teacher, Mrs. Agius taught all E. S. L. English courses including 

OAC English, the nightmare of many E. S. L. students. She was a wonderful teache r of 

English; however, all her students would agree that we learned more than just English 

literature from her. 

Always with a smile on her face, Mrs. Agius was a symbol of warmth and sweetness 

in Jarvis. Her caring and trusting attitudes towards all her students helped make even the 

Mrs. Patricia Agius 

shyest ones feel at home in her class. For E. S. L. students new to Canada , Mrs. Agius 

provided a truly welcoming environment, and always showed her genuine respect and understanding to each 

student. Never did Mrs. Agius embarrass students or make them feel stupid. She would not point out students ' 

mistakes in a way that made them miserable , and consequently, lose interest in the course. Instead the patience 

Mrs. Agius had for her students gave them confidence in themselves and allowed them to progress at 

their own paces. 

"I am a part of all that I have met," said Tennyson. Although she probably thinks of herself as no different 

from other teachers , Mrs. Agius has certainly made a unique impression on all her students . She enriched our 

lives not only with her thorough academic knowledge , but also with her wonderful character. As her students , 

we will always cherish her wherever we go and whatever we do.

What a relief this is all over. No 

more late nights or skipping of classes. 

I hope all of yo u who take a flip 

through this book will enjoy it. The 

idea behind the theme is that a piec e 

ofyour soul is captured in it and comes 

fro m the Natives' belief of your soul 

was ca ptured by a photograph . So 

there really isn't a demonic meanin g to the theme (or at 

least not intend ed). 

I have to say that all the hard work put into this 

yearbook was worth it. Great jo b to all of you who help ed 

out with the produ ction of this yearbook. Valerie, all I can 

do is wish you the best ofluck for next yea r. You did a fine 

job this year. Words of advi ce are: "Don't worry, everything's 

go ing to be all right ," and "Stay calm, cool, and 

co llected ." I didn 't scream at anyo ne or have a complete 

mental breakd own using this advice. Jil lian, amazing as 

usual. I hope the success you've had on the yea rbook will 

co ntinue with everything you do. Alice, I know I pushed 

you a little too hard and maybe I made you skip too man y 

classes but was n't it worth it? Sorry I've sho rtened your 

lifespan by about 10 years. You did well with the mix of 

veterans and rookies in the darkroom. She lley, May, and 

King a, good work on Art & Lit. Chau and Jessica, this 

grads section is amazing. Raymond and Niern, you broke 

the curse. J.1., Ian, & Kirsten, so the curse is yours, and 

with The Force you managed to defeat it in the end. Debra 

& Chri stin a. despite not teaching you very much, you both 

managed to do a good job with Mugs. Br ooke and 

Christine, well you out did Jillian (and you can't say that 

everyday). Shirley & Stan ley, more ads than last year, 

amazing. Kelsey great presale s. Jason and Lisa, where 

are those candids I asked for 2 weeks ago ? Amazing picture 

s by amazing photo editors and staff. I know I didn't 

say it enough but I thank you all from the bottom of my 

heart for all the time, hard work and perseverence. Mrs 

Schindler, I can't thank you enough for all yo ur help and 

guidance you 've given us. Mrs. Cipolla, kee ping the books 

balanced and givi ng us the petty cash, which was invaluble. 

Mr. Rowntree. what can I say, you're a god to everyone on 

this yearbook and especially to me. Thanks for all those

have done this year. We may not have covered every event 

or had a picture of every person, but with the work that 

was put into this book, I can say, without a do ubt that this 

is the best yearbook to date and it can only get better. Cherish

my attempt at it. 

David, I congratulate you on a 

job well done. You are a first rate yearbook 

editor and a goo d frien d. I wish 

you success in all your future endeavours 

after leaving Jarvis. 

Valerie, we did it! The yearboo k 

is finished...but not for you. You suffered 

through the "curse" on Sp orts 

(transferre d fro m the Staff section) and 

surv ived. Th at is a great accomplishment. 

I know you're go ing to be a 

wicked editor- in-chief next year so I 

wish you the best of luck in attac king 

the yea rboo k of '98. 

Clubs: So I lied, proclaiming to never touch Clubs again (after 

being Clubs' Editor in Mag net 1996) didn't work because I was lured to this 

sect ion again in the Magnet of 1997 by two sneaky individuals. (No , I 

wasn't talking abo ut you, Ngoc Hanh and Christine!) Okay, I'm just kidding 

! You guys took up the challenge and succeeded. I think this year's 

Clubs' Section is the best I've ever seen (even better than mine, I admit). 

Awesome work, guys! Grads: Chau and Jessica - both of you can relax 

now that the nightmare is over. Grads is done! I just wa nted to thank you 

two for an excellent job on this section and to say that I'm glad I got a 

chance to work with both of you this year. Staf : iem Tu and Raymond, 

you 've performed a miracle by eradicating the "curse" of the Staff section. 

Kudos to you guy s for producing this section with such organization and 

efficiency. Sports, you guy s owe David and me dinner for Deadline #3! To
