Purpose<br />
To provide a broad view of the student as a reader; to assess<br />
a student’s attitude toward reading, self-perceptions, interests,<br />
use of strategies, etc.<br />
May be used as a pretest and posttest. May be written or oral.<br />
Requires that students know how to use the scale.<br />
To provide a tool for every student to keep track of his or her<br />
independent reading.<br />
May be used to track improvements in reading volume and<br />
pace or to direct the student to additional books.<br />
To record ongoing assessment of each student’s reading<br />
comprehension.<br />
May be used to diagnose a need for further instruction or to<br />
redirect the reader to other books.<br />
To track students’ use of the comprehension strategies that<br />
are the focus of each week.<br />
May be used during small-group and independent work to<br />
diagnose the need for additional instruction or reminders.<br />
To guide a student’s evaluation of his or her own written<br />
piece.<br />
