Change in 2017-2018 Term Dates
Many of you will have found the short
Christmas holiday meant that you were
unable to travel or fully enjoy the festive
period with family. In the weeks since
we’ve been back the school has been hit
School Budgets
There is not much good news here I’m afraid. We
have now had confirmation that LBH will be taking
an additional £50 per pupil from our 17/18 budget.
£50 per pupil was taken from the 16/17 budget too.
At our current pupils numbers is a loss of a further
£19400.
by the whole gambit of illness.
CLASS ATTENDANCE
I am sure that the short break has
contributed to these illnesses and so we
have looked again at the dates for
2017-2018. Governors have looked at the
dates too and together we have agreed a
change. You’ll see the revised 2017-2018
dates on page 3 of this newsletter and on
Brilliant!
Our Attendance
Target is 96%
The one small piece of good news is that as a
Voluntary Aided school (the Governors are the
employers here) and unlike Community schools
(where the Borough is the employer) we are not
subject to the Apprenticeship Levy. If we were it
would amount to c£6000.
The quality of the education we provide can only be
sustained by keeping all of our very good staff.
Maintaining our staffing numbers could mean
coming up with creative alternatives to staff
the schools website and app. We are now
looking at the 2018-2019 dates and we
want to ensure that our dates give
reasonable breaks between terms.
We have no plans to radically change the
pattern of the school year.
redundancy. If you have not already please write
to the PM and our local MP:
The 27th January is marked in the calendar every year as Holocaust memorial day.
On this day we remember all those who have died as a result of man’s inhumanity
to man. It is sobering to realise that if we paused in a minutes silence to remember
every victim of the Holocaust brought about by NAZI ideology we would be silent
for 11 1/2 years…
To the list of those who lost their lives in NAZI controlled Europe we can add
genocides in the Soviet Union, Cambodia, Armenia, Rwanda, Bosnia, Iraq and
Syria.
All perish: the rich and poor, the old, the women, the men, the youth, the
babies…
Dear Lord! Never Again!

Great news! Yet again we’ve been awarded the highest Gold level accreditation for our school
travel. I am very grateful to Mr Pipola in the school office who organises and submits our
evidence for this award. Of course it’s a testament too to all the walking, scootering and
cycling that you do. Please keep it up!
We are now 99% sure that the water works I wrote about in last week’s newsletter will start in
the week after next - the week before half term. I am not yet sure how much disruption there
will be but you should prepare for limited access to the school site at certain times of the day.
There may well be Neilcott staff on the front gate to escort people and vehicles into the site.
The work is scheduled to last for 7 weeks.

Hello
and welcome to our first newsletter of 2017.
congratulations
PTA Newsletter 21
First of all, huge
to my Joint-Chair PTA partner Mell Campbell, who gave birth to a gorgeous
little girl on 13th January. Needless to say, she will be taking a well-earned break from the PTA for the time being.
I would personally like to thank Mell for all the work she has put into last year’s events and projects. Nothing was
ever too much trouble and she did a fantastic job, giving 100% of her free time - even right up to the last couple
weeks of her pregnancy. I have no doubt she’ll be missed and I’m really looking forward to having her back later
in the year.
What an amazing and eventful autumn term we had, with many fundraising
events which kept us very busy. Between September and December 2016, with
your help we managed to raise the following amount of money:
Cake Sale (Junior) £192
Film nights £919
Happy Bags £393
Lunch with Father Christmas/Christmas Fayre £451
Christmas Shopping Event £585
School Calendars £497
Christmas Puddings £71
Easyfundraising £51
Mini Mary’s Music Mayhem £153
Sainsbury’s donation £500
(a kind gesture from Sainsbury’s as part of their campaign to support local
causes. After building the Sainsbury’s Local on St John’s Road, they wanted to
support a local good cause. After being put forward by a St. Mary’s parent, we
were lucky to be chosen. Thank you to Sainsbury's and Base Build Services)
Total raised in Autum Term - £3,812
In the meantime, Catalina Giglio has kindly agreed to help me with the rest of this
school year’s PTA plans. Catalina has been a parent at the school for 14 years and
has also chaired the PTA in the past, so she brings a wealth of experience to the
role. I would personally like to thank her for offering to step-in until Mell returns.
Autumn Term Fundraising achievements
This is an amazing amount and we are well on our way to achieving our end of
school year target of £15,000.
We would especially like to thank those who have taken on an event in its entirety i.e. Christmas Shopping Event
- Kate Fendley and Sara Corry; Mini Mary’s Music Mayhem – Mirna Haddad; the Lego Club – Emma White;
Happy Bags – Maria Ona and the School Calendars – Emelia Majewska. It really has made a difference to our
workload and last term helped us not only raise a lot of money but also set up an exciting new, after school
Lego club for the school for the children to enjoy.
It is always wonderful when someone suggests an idea to raise money for the PTA and then are willing to see it
all the way through. We will continue to encourage all of you to do the same. It makes such a difference and is a
massive help, as well as being a great way for us all to meet and work together.
St Mary's Catholic Primary School Isleworth - PTA
WHAT LIES AHEAD FOR THE REST OF THE SCHOOL YEAR?
AGM Meeting 26th January 2017 at 7..30pm
Myself and Mell are happy to take on the Joint-Chair role again this
year and will be seeking re-election. However this is an opportunity
for anyone else who would like to take on the role to put themselves
forward for election.
We would encourage as many of you as possible to come along; it
would be lovely to see you and listen to your views and ideas.
New PTA Connect App
What is an AGM?
Each year we the PTA have an obligation to
hold an AGM where all parents, carers and
teachers of the school are welcome to
attend. This is the main way you, the
members of the PTA, can hold the
committee to account for its running of the
association. Typically there is a report
made by the Treasurer regarding the funds
raised and how these have been spent. It is
usual for all members of the committee to
stand down at the AGM, but they can seek
re-election.
Over the last few months, Catalina
has been working together with the
‘PTA Connect’ team to build an App
especially for St Mary’s School. This
App will become the central point of
communication, payments and
booking for all the events we have
planned. The App has many features
including a Booking Office facility,
Volunteer Link straight through to
Doodle, Key Information and a Calendar highlighting all the events
we have planned for the rest of the school year. A lot of work and
research has gone into this and we are confident in its ability to
make things a lot easier for all of us.
You can download the App now for free via the App Store or
Google Play by searching for ‘st marys pta’ . The App uses our PTA
logo and can be easily identified. Moving forward, if there is
anything you need to know or do relating to the PTA, you’ll be the
first to hear via this App.
Easyfundrasing
We’ve discovered a fantastic and easy way to raise money
for the school, all from the comfort of our own home.
What’s more, we’re not asking you for a penny. All you
have to do is simply shop online as you would normally,
but instead of going directly to the shop’s website, you
enter their website via the easyfundraising website.
That’s it, that’s all you have to do. The lovely thing is,
because you’ve used the easyfundraising website to get
there, the school receives a small commission and it
doesn't cost you a penny extra. They have 3,135 shops
and sites accessible via their website.
So far the amount raised this year is £51. Sarah Douglas
has been working on this project to see how we can
communicate this more effectively. More details will
follow, as well as a big drive to promote this fundraising
site very soon.
Happy Bags
These have been really successful and very
popular in the past. By booking 4 dates in
advance we will be entitled to more
commission on each occasion of collection.
We will therefore be booking 4 dates for the
rest of this year and these will be announced
soon.
Dates will be added to the PTA calendar once
confirmed. Please bear these in mind when
you’re clearing out your old clothes, bedding
etc. We will however send out reminders
nearer the time. It really is a great and easy
way to raise money for our school.
Mother’s Day Gift Event
After the success of last year’s gift event, we
are keen to do this again but with something
just a little bit different. We are currently
looking into ideas. However if you have an
interesting idea about ways in which we can
make the Mother’s day Gift Event special, we
would love to hear from you.
Please message us either through the PTA
Facebook page or stmaryspta@gmail.com.
EVENTS COMING UP CONTINUED...
International Runway Event - Friday 24th March
An evening where we celebrate different cultures,
nationalities and languages. Suggested by a parent, we are
keen to hold this event where the children can show their
national costume, dress, music and dance on our very own
catwalk. There’ll also be the chance to sample different
dishes from around the world.
We will need as many of you as possible to take part in order
to make this event a real success. More details to follow.
Film Nights
These events are extremely popular and we have 2 sets of
film nights planned in March and June 2017. Tickets do sell
out very quickly for these events so we would encourage
you to book online via our wonderful new App as soon as
possible, once we promote what films will be showing.
Due to the popularity of these nights, we are keen to
ensure that as many children as possible get to experience
this event. We therefore ask that during both the events in
March and June you only choose one film in that
particular month. If, however, we find there are seats still
available after everyone has booked, we will send a
notification via the App advising you all that the second
night is available to book online and will then be on a ‘first
come, first serve’ basis. We hope you see this as the fairest
option, now that we have 2 form entry in most years and
numbers are limited.
Cake Sales
The next cake sale for Infants will be on 8th
February and for Juniors will be 11th May. There
are two more further dates for the Summer term
so please see the PTA calendar for these.
What does ‘Infants’ or ‘Juniors’ mean? This
means that on this particular Cake Sale event we
would ask if your child is a Junior (Y3-Y6) and it is
the junior cake sale, that you would kindly either
make or buy a cake to be sold at that event. The
same applies to Infants (Reception – Y2).
Last term we didn’t receive a great amount of
cake donations and ended up having to use
some of the profit to buy cakes on the day. The
more contributions we receive, the more money
we raise during these events.
Future potential plans for the summer term:
Quizco (Quiz and a disco) – 19th May
Penny Jar (Saving pennies at home) – Month of May
Father’s Day Gift – leading up to the day 18th June
“School’s out for summer” disco for all years
Summer Fair
Thank you for supporting all our events/projects throughout the last year since Mell and I became Joint-Chair. It
has been a very interesting and fun journey and we really do appreciate all the kind words, help and support you
have given us throughout our first year. Having you all behind us really does make a difference, be it through
volunteering to help before, at or after each event, bringing in things to help raise money or simply attending or
buying the goods we offer for sale throughout the months. It really does make it all worthwhile.
Here’s to getting nearer to achieving our goal in creating a wonderful playground environment for all our children
at St Mary’s. With the continued help from you all, it is definitely possible.
Best wishes,
Memorare
Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known
that any one who fled to thy protection, implored thy help
or sought thy intercession, was left unaided.
Inspired by this confidence,
We fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins my Mother; to thee do we come, before
thee we stand, sinful and sorrowful;
O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not our petitions,
but in thy mercy hear and answer them.
Amen.
Pantosaurus and the NSPCC’s PANTS campaign
At St Mary’s we teach the children about keeping safe by using the NSPCC’s PANTS
resources. This term the campaign is being relaunched in Hounslow schools and
we are delighted to be able to share the new resources with children. Across the
school we’ve been joining in the Pantosaurus song (with the PANTS theme).
We hope that you are able to sing along with your child and perhaps use the song
as an opening to talk to them about keeping themselves safe. You will find a
wealth of resources on the NSPCC website and there’s also a specific booklet to
help you talk to your child about private parts of the body, find it here:
hJps://www.nspcc.org.uk/globalassets/documents/advice-and-info/underwearrule-guide-for-parents.pdf
As part of our focus on on private parts you should expect and be prepared for
your child to quesOon you about their body and the different parts of their body.
The best advice from experts is that even very young children learn and use the
correct names for the parts of their bodies.
The NSPCC’s advice is that you should weave conversaOons about keeping safe
into everyday acOviOes and bring up the topic oQen but a liJle at a Ome. In doing
this, children get consistent messages which help them to keep themselves safe.
Have a look at the NSPCC resources and enjoy singing along to Pantosaurus too!
You can find the song here:
Your underwear covers up your private parts
and no one should ask to see or touch them.
Sometimes a doctor, nurse or family members
might have to. But they should always explain
why, and ask you if it’s OK first. Remember,
what’s in your pants belongs only to you.
You always have the right to say ‘no’ –
even to a family member or someone you
love. You’re in control of your body and the
most important thing is how YOU feel. If
you want to say ‘No’, it’s your choice.
It’s always good to talk about stuff that makes
you upset. If you’re worried, go and tell a grown
up you trust – like a family member, teacher or
one of your friend’s parents. They’ll say well done
for speaking out and help make everything OK.
You can also call Childline on 0800 1111 and
someone will always be there to listen.
No one should ever make you do things
that make you feel embarrassed or
uncomfortable. If someone asks to see
or tries to touch you underneath your
underwear say ‘NO’ – and tell someone
you trust and like to speak to.
There are good secrets and bad
secrets. If a secret makes you feel sad
or worried, it’s bad – and you should tell
an adult you trust about it straight away.
Remember all of these
rules and they’ll help
you stay safe, just like
Pantosaurus
