Nissan Qashqai celebrates 10 years of crossover leadership<br />

10 years since the Nissan<br />
Qashqai crossover first<br />
went on sale, and the brand<br />
is celebrating in style. Customer<br />
events and media activities<br />
are taking place across<br />
Europe to mark the occasion.<br />
Nissan is the first brand to<br />
reach the 10-year milestone<br />
for one simple reason – the<br />
Qashqai is the model which<br />
pioneered the crossover segment<br />
as the automotive industry<br />
and car-buying<br />
consumers know it today.<br />
A decade ago, there was no<br />
vehicle which successfully<br />
mixed the practicality and desirability<br />
of an SUV with the<br />
size, efficiency and dynamic<br />
performance of a compact<br />
hatchback.<br />
The Qashqai’s innovative design<br />
and versatile packaging<br />
started life in 2002, during the<br />
development process for<br />
what was originally intended<br />
to be the new Nissan Almera.<br />
The creative team decided to<br />
go back to the drawing board<br />
and conceived a car which<br />
truly reflected what buyers<br />
were looking for, and delivered<br />
on Nissan’s brand promise<br />
– Innovation &<br />
Excitement for Everyone.<br />
The first generation of the<br />
Nissan Qashqai went on sale<br />
in February 2007 and was an<br />
instant success. Close to<br />
100,000 examples were sold<br />
across Europe before the<br />
end of the year, and Nissan<br />
has never looked back.<br />
In 10 years of the Qashqai,<br />
more than 2.3 million examples<br />
have been sold in Europe,<br />
which makes it the<br />
region’s best-selling crossover.<br />
The car has won more<br />
than 80 awards, including 19<br />
recognising it as the ‘Car of<br />
the Year’.<br />

crossover sales in Europe<br />

it a clean sweep in the LCV<br />

and winning the Best Light<br />

A highlight was the award for<br />
the Best Light Commercial Vehicle<br />
Plant, the Gold award for its<br />
manufacturing facility located in<br />
Prospecton, KwaZulu-Natal.<br />
Toyota South Africa Motors<br />
(TSAM) also scooped<br />
the Sunday Times Top Brand<br />
award as the best regarded car<br />
brand in the Consumer category<br />
in 2<strong>01</strong>6. It is the second time<br />
that TSAM has won an award<br />

i20 RANGE GETS NEW 1.4 AUTO DERIVATIVE<br />
HYUNDAI Automotive South<br />
Africa has expanded its popular<br />
i20 range with the addition<br />
of a new 1,4-litre engine derivative,<br />
fitted with an automatic<br />
gearbox and an attractive<br />
package of standard features.<br />
The new i20 1.4 Motion Automatic,<br />
takes its slot in the<br />
middle of one of the best selling<br />
model ranges in<br />
Hyundai’s local product lineup.<br />
The other derivatives<br />
are the i20<br />
1.2 Motion and Fluid<br />
(both with a 5-<br />
speed manual<br />
gearbox); the i20<br />
1.4 Fluid (with a<br />
6-speed manual<br />
and 4-speed automatic<br />
gearbox respectively);<br />
and<br />
the i20 1.4 Sport<br />
with a 6-speed<br />
manual gearbox.<br />
Power in the new<br />
i20 1.4 Motion<br />
comes from its Kappa<br />
1,4 litre engine<br />
that delivers<br />
74 kW at 6 000<br />
r/min., with the<br />
torque output<br />
reaching its limit at 133 Nm,<br />
delivered at 3 500 r/min. Power<br />
is delivered to the front<br />
wheels through a 4-speed automatic<br />
gearbox.<br />
Apart from its power source,<br />
the new i20 1.4 Motion derivative<br />
shares the specification<br />
level of its sibling in the i20<br />
range, the i20 1.2 Motion<br />
manual, which is equipped<br />
with the smaller 1,2 litre engine<br />
that delivers maximum<br />
power of 61 kW at 4 000<br />
r/min., and maximum torque<br />
of 115 Nm at 4 000 r/min.<br />
The distinctive design of the<br />
i20 is a creation of Hyundai<br />
Motor’s Design Centre in Rüsselsheim,<br />
Germany, and was<br />
influenced by the latest interpretation<br />
of Hyundai Motor’s<br />
design philosophy, Fluidic<br />
Sculpture 2.0, with the clean<br />
and elegant lines giving it a<br />
sophisticated appearance.<br />
The purposeful appearance<br />
of the new i20 is emphasised<br />
by its long hood, low roofline<br />
and sharp crease line that<br />
combine to achieve a streamlined<br />
vehicle with an aerodynamic<br />
drag figure of 0,34 Cd.<br />
The Hyundai i20 features a<br />
large tailgate for ease of loading<br />
into its generous boot<br />
space of 294 litres, with a<br />
convenient wide boot opening.<br />
With a large cabin and a generous<br />
list of standard technologies,<br />
the i20 offers a<br />
sophisticated and luxurious<br />
occupant environment and<br />
comes with a host of standard<br />
