February A Happy New <strong>Year</strong> to all our readers! Unfortunately we have to begin 2017 with bad news. Hopefully you will by now have read the open letter on our front cover. Producing a magazine like ours (and one of which we rightly feel proud) has been a labour of love, but a labour none the less. With a full team the labour would not be too onerous, but we are very short of hands and none of our team is growing any younger: it the nature of the beast that most of us are well beyond retirement age and beginning to be aware of our growing limitations. Remember Boxer the old carthorse in “Animal Farm’ who went on working on impossible tasks until he dropped because his motto was, ‘I must work harder’? Well, we feel that if we carry on as we are, soon we will be in danger of doing the same with no backup and no-one to share the tasks. At present should a key member fall ill the magazine would cease. Just like that. No warning. Winding up the magazine is not a decision we have taken lightly: it has served the community well for nearly forty years and grown from a few typewritten, duplicated sheets stapled together into a professional standard production of which we feel proud. We are also aware that without ‘The Marlpit’ local organisations, the Churches and Parish Councils would have to find other means of communicating, particularly to those without internet access. We have not forgotten either, that its continued success has been in no small part to the army of volunteers, past and present who have turned out in all weathers to make sure it is delivered around the parishes. Some of them also are feeling the weight of their years and of other responsibilities; they need back up too. As you will see inside currently a distributor is needed for the Hautbois round. Producing the magazine has been very rewarding, but it does require some energy and not a little commitment. To enable us to continue beyond August, we particularly need a Treasurer, two people to help with the advertising and perhaps most important, someone who can shadow the Compilation Editor with the aim of taking over the role in due course, but we do need to hear from you NOW. The stronger the team, the less onerous the task. Please contact any editor if you feel you have what it takes. Our details are on inside front page opposite this editorial. Any one of us would be happy to discuss what is needed with you.
