40 th Anniversary Year
THE
An important Announcement to all our Readers,
Contributors and Advertisers
It is with great regret that we have to begin the New Year with the
following announcement.
We have been advertising for over a year for help in various ways to
complement our existing editorial team, but to date we have received
no offers which have been long-lasting. For some time now we have
been operating without a Treasurer or Advertising Sales manager and
although we are grateful to those who have stepped temporarily into
the breach, in the longer term we cannot carry on without more help. It
takes a number of hours to produce each edition of the magazine,
which is quite a burden if we do not have a full team of helpers.
Sadly, the time has now come to make a decision about the magazine’s
future. The present team feel unable to continue unless there are major
changes, therefore it has been decided that the double issue for
August/September 2017, which is also the magazine’s 40 th birthday,
will be our last.
If we cease to publish, those of you who advertise with us may rest
assured that we will have sufficient funds to reimburse any advertising
paid for beyond September.
February
A Happy New Year to all our readers!
Unfortunately we have to begin 2017 with bad news. Hopefully you will
by now have read the open letter on our front cover. Producing a
magazine like ours (and one of which we rightly feel proud) has been a
labour of love, but a labour none the less.
With a full team the labour would not be too onerous, but we are very
short of hands and none of our team is growing any younger: it the nature
of the beast that most of us are well beyond retirement age and beginning
to be aware of our growing limitations. Remember Boxer the old
carthorse in “Animal Farm’ who went on working on impossible tasks
until he dropped because his motto was, ‘I must work harder’? Well, we
feel that if we carry on as we are, soon we will be in danger of doing the
same with no backup and no-one to share the tasks. At present should a
key member fall ill the magazine would cease. Just like that. No warning.
Winding up the magazine is not a decision we have taken lightly: it has
served the community well for nearly forty years and grown from a few
typewritten, duplicated sheets stapled together into a professional
standard production of which we feel proud. We are also aware that
without ‘The Marlpit’ local organisations, the Churches and Parish
Councils would have to find other means of communicating, particularly
to those without internet access.
We have not forgotten either, that its continued success has been in no
small part to the army of volunteers, past and present who have turned out
in all weathers to make sure it is delivered around the parishes. Some of
them also are feeling the weight of their years and of other
responsibilities; they need back up too. As you will see inside currently a
distributor is needed for the Hautbois round.
Producing the magazine has been very rewarding, but it does require
some energy and not a little commitment. To enable us to continue
beyond August, we particularly need a Treasurer, two people to help with
the advertising and perhaps most important, someone who can shadow
the Compilation Editor with the aim of taking over the role in due course,
but we do need to hear from you NOW. The stronger the team, the less
onerous the task.
Please contact any editor if you feel you have what it takes. Our details
are on inside front page opposite this editorial. Any one of us would be
happy to discuss what is needed with you.
Notes from Horstead with
Stanninghall Parish Council –
January
Introduction
Hello again. Going into the New Year
I'm sure we're all looking forward to spring; and although it
would have been tempting to hibernate over the winter period,
the Parish Council has been busy preparing for the oncoming
months.
If you wish to speak to me I can be contacted via the parish
council website, email me at Horsteadclerk@gmail.com or
telephone: 07476 952824. If you do leave a message, please
remember to leave your name and contact number so I can get
back to you.
Please don't forget to check the Parish Council notice boards
and website as they often contain information you may like to
know about, which I can't include in these notes due to either
timing or space.
Planning
HWSPC
Minutes
For December and January the Parish Council has considered
four planning applications and has responded to Broadland
District Council.
20162018 – Flint Cottage, Frettenham Road, Horstead, NR12
7LB – Erection of open cart shed in rear garden. The Parish
Council raised NO OBJECTION to this planning permission.
Application for premises licence to be granted under
Licencing Act 2003 at Farm to Fork and Fish. The Parish Council
had NO OBJECTION to this application.
20162090 – 98 Norwich Road, Horstead, NR12 7EQ - Single
Storey Front and rear extensions. The Parish Council has raised
concerns that the proposed rear extension will have a
considerable negative impact on the light and solar gain
currently experienced by a neighbouring property.
20162176 – Crostwick Kennels, Hall Lane, Horstead, NR12 7BB
– Construction of new workshop/store. The Parish Council had
NO OBJECTION to this application.
Playing Field and the Trod Path
Even during these colder months the playground continues to
be well used. Our regular inspections are currently carried out
fortnightly and will revert to weekly at Easter. The playground is
due its annual inspection and we expect this to be carried out in
the next couple of weeks, this will include a full inspection and
Coltishall & Horstead Good Neighbours
The next tea party will take place on Thursday 9 th March
from 2 – 4pm at Coltishall village hall. There will be musical
entertainment not to be missed! If you would like to join us and
need transport please call the Good Neighbours on the above
number.
5
re-tensioning of the zip wire cable.
As a separate exercise the trees at the playground will also be
surveyed, but this may need to wait until the trees are in leaf.
There are some ash trees around the field that we need to
monitor closely with regards to ash die back disease and we are
aware the branches of some trees are too close to the play
equipment. A full survey will allow us to arrange all necessary
work.
If you notice anything amiss at the playground, or have any
concerns that may be relevant to the surveyors/inspectors,
please contact me.
Highways
The obstruction at the entrance to the bridleway off Granny
Bards Lane has been moved and hedges on either side have
been cut back to allow horse and rider access. The obstruction
has not been removed completely as it has been placed there to
prevent vehicle access amid concerns over illegal raves.
Blocked road drains along Hall Lane continue to give residents
issues. Highways agree this is a problem and they will unblock
them - I will continue to chase until this has been resolved.
If you know of any other issues please let me know.
War Memorial
Historic England are looking to adopt our War Memorial. If
adopted it will be added to the List of Buildings of Special
Architectural or Historic Interest, which brings specific protection
so that its special interest can be properly considered in
managing its future. This doesn’t affect our aim to clean and
refurbish the War Memorial in the coming year.
Neighbourhood Plan
Thank you to everyone who returned their neighbourhood
questionnaires, these have now been sent off to be analysed
and when they are returned the results will be incorporated in
the Neighbourhood Plan.
The neighbourhood plan group meets on the last Wednesday of
most months. To keep you informed of progress their minutes
are on the Parish Council website and, when relevant, they
submit articles to the Marlpit. They also have a Facebook page,
and Ron would love to receive some 'likes' and messages.
Parish Precept
It was decided at the December Parish Council meeting that the
Parish Precept for Horstead with Stanninghall will remain
unchanged for the next financial year.
Date and time of next meeting:
Wednesday 8 th February at 6.15pm in the Hayloft in the
Tithe Barn.
The Good Neighbours would like to thank the Londis shop for
donating 10% of the profit from there promotional items during
October 2016. This will go towards future outings.
Please continue to recycle your glass bottles, jars etc at the Red
Lion recycling bin, the Good Neighbours benefit from this.
The Good Neighbour volunteers are available to assist the
community of Coltishall and Horstead in many ways and of any
age.
Wroxham Parish
Council News
Wroxham Parish Council has a
new chairman - Councillor Barry
Fiske. Company director Cllr Barry
Fiske, married with two grown up
children has lived in Wroxham
since 1978. An experienced
mechanical and chemical
engineer, Barry has travelled
extensively for the past 45 years involved in the global
distribution of oil, gas and chemicals. Barry retired at the end of
2015 and now makes family, friends and relaxing his priority. He
plans to use his spare time, organisational skills and experience
to the betterment of the village, its environment and its future.
Barry vigorously promotes the desire to have all parish council
activities open and transparent and promotes ideas where all
parishioners can be engaged, should they wish, in initiatives
designed to promote and improve the village amenities and
facilities to the benefit of its visitors and residents.
Barry commented on his appointment:
We are looking for people who would like to be co-opted onto
the council and play an active part in shaping the future of our
village. If you would like further information or would like to talk
it through please email Council Chairman Barry Fiske for an
informal chat on: barryfiske@hotmail.co.uk. Or you can email
the Parish Clerk Daphne Wyatt on
Parking Problems
A number of people have contacted the council about problem
parking in parts of the village leading to pavements being
blocked to pedestrians. At Wroxham Parish Council's next
meeting on Thursday Feb 2, our new Police Beat Officer P.C.
Sean Phillips will be in attendance to listen to any complaints
you may have and to offer advice. Please come along. Start
time is 6.30 p.m. - that's an hour earlier than in the past - and
we have a new venue: The Hub, Norwich Road, next to the
Church Hall
Wherry Gardens Tanker Issue
Your Council has been active in trying to bring to an end the
nuisance caused by daily sewage tanker emptying from the
Wherry Gardens development which after nearly 18 months is
still not connected to the mains drainage system. The delay
seems to have been caused by issues between Hopkins
Homes, the developers, and Anglia Water who would
complete the final stages of the project. Your council took part
in a live outside broadcast from the site on BBC Radio Norfolk in
January and initiated a report in the Eastern Daily Press.
Hopkins Homes and Anglia Water have now promised to
complete the work by March. Not before time, say the residents
living in Salhouse Road and surrounding areas who have been
considerably affected by noise and smell from the daily tanker
emptying from holding tanks.
Neighbourhood Plan
We reported in the last issue of The Bridge that we are to
create a Neighbourhood Plan for Wroxham which will be a
binding blueprint controlling future development and also
looking at resources, facilities and ideas for the village covering
the next 20 or 30 years. We are establishing a working group
made up of people from the village who are prepared to help
with the project. We have already had a few volunteers but we
need more. The aim will be to hold a public meeting for those
who have expressed an interest in February. If you would like to
help or would like more information then please contact Cllr
Preschool
Preschool leaders have worked hard to source funding for a fenced,
outdoor play area. The work was completed before the children
returned from the Christmas break, and it is already being well-used.
Both children and their parents are delighted with this welcome facility,
so congratulations to the Preschool leaders.
Highways
The pot-hole on Frogge Lane has been poorly repaired. Hautbois Road
will not be gritted despite our frequent requests - two accidents had
occurred within two days during December. Highways has also
confirmed that it has no plans to consider a 30mph speed limit on the
Hautbois Road. Vehicles are using the right hand road around the grass
triangle on the Frogge Lane/Hautbois Road in spite of the sign, and
coupled with speeding vehicles on Hautbois Road this is a potential
accident site.. The white lines in High Street and near the Post Office
have faded, so Highways will be asked to renew them.
Phone mast
Councillors had discussed this proposal following the public consultation,
and agreed to continue with the scheme. Planning consent has been
given by Broadland DC. Solicitors are preparing the necessary
documents which will be studied before they are signed.
included local care homes for the elderly, the Doctors
Surgery in Wroxham and several private homes where
householders, friends and family were able to hear them
perform favourite Christmas songs and carols.
BROADLAND CHESS CLUB
December report
Chess has been very high profile in the
news recently with the exciting World
Championships taking place and Magnus
Carlson retaining his title for the 2 nd time
at the tender age of 26. However people
of various ages enjoy playing chess
whether as a hobby or at tournament
standard. In the first of an occasional
series of player profiles here is Heather
Enid Wells’ story in her own words.
commitments.
In December the club held its Christmas party, a mini
tournament open to all. There were three sections arranged by
grade. The Fischer section was closely contested; the winner
was Justin Singh with 5½/6, Heather Enid Wells was runner up.
The Tal section finished with Tony Arnold and Robert Smith
tied on 4/6. A game played under Armageddon rules gave first
place to Tony. The Capablanca section was won convincingly
by Ken McEwan, 7½/8, with Paul Badger and Roy Hughes equal
second.
Congratulations must also go to two of our Junior members for
their recent tournament successes. Preethi Saravanan won the
u-13 section of the Norfolk and Norwich Rapidplay and Darcy
Pashley was second equal in the u-10 section.
January Report
The internal club championships are still progressing, so lots of
is divided into different levels to allow all players a chance to
towards the end of the season it can become frantic though as
the players jostle for position and struggle to fit all of their
Wroxham FC was formed in 1892 by Mr GE Preston of Beeston
Hall. So, 2017 will be our 125 th year anniversary. There can’t be
many clubs in the county who have such a long record behind
them. We would like to celebrate this achievement and if any
readers can help in any way, please contact Secretary Chris
Green on 783936 or email secretary@wroxhamFC.com
The 1 st team are not yet doomed to relegation despite
effectively being 21 points from safety with little over 15 games
left to play. It’s a big challenge but hopefully if we can put a few
results together over the next month or so, we can get another
great escape. Every game looks like being a “cup tie”!
We must still play Brentwood (Away 7 th Feb) and Waltham
Abbey (Home 11 th Feb) who look to be the most likely
candidates to be involved in the relegation battle with us and
Great Wakering. We have games in hand over all three teams,
so win those and things could look much healthier.
The reserves have reached the halfway stage but had a short
Xmas break and returned to action with a 5-nil defeat at
Mulbarton. Clearly too much Xmas cheer for some of our young
players. But hopefully they will soon return to winning ways
continuing to challenge for a high position finish in the Anglian
Combination.
No problems for the U18’s who got a good win away to
Yarmouth in their first game of 2017 and are in 2 nd place in the
East Division of the Thurlow Nunn Youth League.
After being without a 1 st team shirt sponsor, Dynamic Group an
employment agency has agreed to have their names on the
shirts for the remainder of this season. Regency Security Group
are also sponsoring rain jackets and tracksuits for the reserves.
We are extremely grateful for the support of both companies.
On Sat Feb 25 th we are holding a Race Night sponsored by
Iconic Estate Agents and we also thank them and owner Chris
Hall who now lives in Wroxham. Full details in poster below.
These are usually good fun, so do come along.
to slow down the course of the disease.
General well being advice and support
Eileen Cooper
Eileen Cooper passed away at home
in Rectory Road, Horstead at the
age of ninety nine. Her Son Harry
and family would like to thank
Coltishall Surgery, Coltishall
Pharmacy, the District Nurses and
her carers for their help. Thanks
also to Reverend Engelson,
Broadland Funeral Service and the
staff at the Recruiting Sergeant. The
ongoing support of family friends is
very much appreciated as was the
attendance by so many at Eileen’s
funeral.
The Coman Family
As you may know I read the Marlpit
every month seeing what's going
on, I did notice a while back that
person was looking into their family
tree "the Coman family well if they
still read the Marlpit I can say that
they are related to the Wells family
as I am also, it would seem that a
Florence Mary Coman married a
certain Ralph Wells on Feb21 1932
now from that can any of your
readers know of a Matilda Spalding
of that same year 1932 or of a
Margaret Rushmen from the
wedding of Claude Wells to
Margaret Youngs on May 21 1934
did the two women live in Coltishall
or still live there but I think that it's
too long ago for them to be still
alive but someone could remember
them, may be they worked at the
Old Hall Coltishall
Samaritans Purse
On behalf of the
Samaritans Purse, Sue
Edmonson and Jill
Blackburn, we would
like to thank all those good people
who made up Christmas Shoe
Boxes this year. The children will
have a pleasant surprise.
This year we collected over 60
boxes, combined with the units in
Dereham and Norwich, 9100 have
been sent altogether.
Our dad was diagnosed
with Parkinson's in 2014.
He had shown some
symptoms of shuffling gait
and tremor for quite some
time before he felt the
need to approach the
doctor for a diagnosis as
he is very much of a man
by nature who tries to
cope and just carry on with
as little fuss as possible.
He has always been a
proud, caring, independent
man who stands at the
head of our family so we
realised the importance of
ensuring these facts
continue to define him not
the label of a diagnosis of
Parkinson's disease .He is
and always has been the
best dad any daughters
could wish for and we want to show him how
much we love, respect and support him in
every challenge that life sends his way .
Parkinson's uk support and research charity
is totally dependent on donation, it offers
one to one support and information to people
with Parkinson's, their families and carers.
,surveys and audits,drug trials volunteer
support networks and groups with on-line
discussion forums, information publications
,help line and local advisors to name just a
few of the outstanding work that is provided
to support families just like ours.
My sister and I used the traditional boxing
day North Norfolk coastline sea dip as our
plunge for Parkinson's to shout out to our
dad to show how much we love him, while
we raised awareness of Parkinson's and
raised funds to support the continuation of
all the great work behind this condition and
to say dad we are so proud of you for the
way you continue to face adversity everyday
with your determination and positive nature,
you are an inspiration. He battles to maintain
his independence and this past year has
been amazing in his support to our mum who
has had her own health challenges to face .
To date we have raised the sum of £300.00
from our generous sponsors to which we
would like to say a heart felt thank you .
Pink is the colour
At Erpingham a caravan storage site has been the victim of
theft. A total of 8 privately owned caravans being damaged,
with the battery lockers being broken open and the battery
being stolen.
DC Andy Brown reminds you that a simple spray of florescent
pink paint will make your batteries un-attractive to thieves.
Whilst the offenders are on your land looking for stolen
batteries, what else are they looking at?
Are you leaving yourself vulnerable to further incidents?
We would encourage all subscribers to Property Mark your
items. This can be as easy as post-coding items or using
products like SelectaDNA or Smartwater which can be easily
applied to smaller items which helps identify them, combined
with clear signage- this will dissuade thieves.
If you are aware of an incident or offence taking place there
and then or shortly afterwards please dial 999. The above inbox
hearing from you. Your local Wildlife Crime Officers:
Heating Oil Theft:
In Cley next-the-sea, Great Dunham and Worthing we have
taken reports of heating oil thefts. Large quantities of oil have
been stolen at each location.
Heating Oil tank alarms are openly available in DIY shops and
on-line. They sound when the tank empties at too fast a rate.
I would urge anyone with an Oil Tank to consider installing
one. They can be fitted quickly and easily by most people and
give a high level or reassurance that this will discourage any
potential future thefts.
Heritage Crime:
St Peters Church at Ringland was targeted for lead theft. The
alarm sounded when the thieves accessed the roof and were
seen fleeing the scene on foot.
In Snettisham, St Marys Church has been the victim of lead
thieves. 2 rolls of lead were removed from the roof. Ladders
were used to access the roof.
Our heritage sites are at great risk from theft and vandalism.
If you see or hear anything suspicious, anything that your not
happy with, please report it as soon as you can on: 101.
If you believe there is a crime in progress, occurring there and
then, please dial 999!
Rural Crime:
The village of Upwell has seen some incidents over the weekend
of the 7th and 8th of January. Number plates were stolen from
a vehicle parked outside a private address and the Village Hall
and Bowls Club had outside metal storage containers broken
into.
At Mundesley on the North Norfolk Coast an emergency signal
flare was set off. A member of the IRB- Inshore Rescue Boat
(RNLI) crew was able to ascertain that this was not an
emergency situation but a boat had been broken into and one
or more persons had set the flare off. Other items relating to
the boat and theft were discovered close by. A second flare was
located along the beach and made safe.
Gardening Tips for February
Happy New Year to you all.
At the time of writing the colder part of winter hasn’t arrived, although snow has been forecast.
I have spotted some snowdrops on the outskirts of Norwich.
February is the time to tidy up those odd jobs which haven’t yet been done.
● Clear up remaining leaves or twigs which may have scattered after strong winds.
● If you are planning any bare root planting like shrubs, roses and hedging this is better done this
month, as long as the ground isn’t frozen. This is because plants need to anchor their roots to stabilize
them and they will also then be able to draw nutrients and moisture for healthier growth.
● Finish off any digging as long as the ground isn’t too wet.
● Prune any remaining shrubs and deciduous hedges.
● You can still divide up any perennials that are getting too large and incorporate some organic matter.
● Prune down autumn raspberries or plant some new ones.
● If you are growing potatoes, now is the time to select your varieties. Stand the tubers up, in a tray or
box, in a cool, frost free environment.
● If you don’t fancy doing a lot outside, tidy up your shed, clean your tools and labels and check your
seeds.
Our AGM was held at the end of November. David Hurrell, and
Nick Roger have stepped down from team selection duties,
with Rob James being elected as captain and Tony Elvin as vice
captain.
Due to the sad loss of our club President, Les Shingles, early
last year, Brian Bell was duly elected as the new President.
Brian has been a very valuable member of the club for many
years.
Thanks to Trevor for organising a post Christmas dinner at the
Red Lion, which has taken place on 14th January.
Happy New Year to all the Marlpit readers.
Wroxham Parish Cllr Chris Hall is a man with a mission. Chris is
Convener of the Council’s Recreation and Amenities Group and
his mission is the brighten up our village. A number of
be brighter. Chris is planning to set up a standalone “Wroxham
Frettenham New Farm Aviation Group
From humble beginnings in a single portacabin in Frettenham New Farm Aviation Group is growing rapidly
now boosting 5 portacabins and a barn !! And thinking of further expansion. Started approx 10 years ago
by Mr Trevor Hewitt to exhibit his excavated parts of the crashed Liberator 'Belle of Boston' this was the
first of many Liberator excavations all of which are on display. Also on display are remains from a Trident
at Felthorpe ,a Heinkle from Salthouse and parts from a Canberra at Holt. These are but a few of the
many and varied displays on view. After a slow start to 2016 ie) a quiet craft fair much work was carried
out in preparation for our first open day. An excellent day was had by all. We also had the Norfolk Military
Vehicle club present and raised a nice amount for roof repairs. Our road show visited Flixton’s aviation
enthusiasts day and Old Buckenham air show along with Marsham’s Tractor day and Hethell museum s open day. Many new friends
made and information gained. The next open day was another outstanding success. Two more craft fairs and a coffee morning
including some craft stalls and grand draw finished the year on a good note.
2017 will see the museum opening the second Sunday in the month from March to the public
New members always welcome. We are on the Spixworth to Buxton road behind the flag poles and shed manufacturer.
New Victory Hall Neatishead
Welcome to the New Year - I hope all your aspirations and
New Years resolutions come to fruition during the coming year.
I am aware that some magazines did not have a January issue,
so to those people for whom this publication is the first of
2017, may I wish you all a belated Happy New Year.
Our journeys around the villages in December, with Santa and
his Sleigh, were very successful, made even better by the
settled weather and it was a delight to see the expressions on
the children’s faces. We are please to report that the total
collected this year was £4,071.63, which is a new record. A
sincere thank you to everyone who made a donation, no matter
how small. Every penny collected goes into our charity account
for the benefit of local deserving causes.
The shop in the precinct had a very good December and thank
you to you all who made donations of Bric-Brac, Christmas
goods and clothing.
The £100 shop charity draw for December went to Alzheimer’s
Society, as nominated by Carole Osborne from Lammas who
donated goods to our shop and that for January went to
Friends of Horning School, nominated by Jodie Dixon of
Hoveton.
On the social side, at the first meeting of December we had our
usual pre Christmas social evening with our partners and ex
lions. During the evening we presented cheques of £1500-00
each, to both The RAF Benevolent Fund (proceeds from our
charity concert) and SERV Norfolk Blood Bikers who transport
emergency blood and baby milk supplies between Hospitals in
the Anglia Region (half the proceeds from the summer Tombola
stall in the precinct)
On Sunday January 22nd we held our annual Charter Lunch at
the Old
Rectory Hotel, Crostwick. where Lions members from other
clubs joined us to celebrate our 41 years of Lionism. We had a
very enjoyable lunch and a presentation of a cheque for £1500-
00 was made to SSAFA, being the other half of the proceeds
from our tombola stall.
We are always looking for new members, so if you have a few
hours to spare why not join us to help people in our community
who are less fortunate than
ourselves. It really is very rewarding. Just ring me 01603
784093 or alternatively 01603 782002, which is the number for
our membership chairperson Lion Suzanne Barnett.
Lastly please remember to keep eye on any elderly or disabled
neighbours during the winter months.
Boris Smolensky’s budget repertory production is looking decidedly shaky. The
cast are more interested in their egos than the play, and things go from bad to
worse when a murder is committed. Relationships between the cast members are
sorely tested as Boris insists that the production goes ahead despite recent
events. Numerous red herrings will keep you, the audience, guessing and
chuckling until the final moments of the action.
40 years
In September The Marlpit will be 40 years old so we are
producing an Anniversary copy as well as what we so
desperately hope will not be the last Marlpit. We ask all of our
readers to take a step down memory lane and share anything
that may be of interest that can be traced to a date between
1977 and 2017.
● A family event that made the local press
● A sports team photo
● A school year photo
● A wedding photo in our local churches
● The start or closing of a local business
Just a few suggestions, certainly not limited to them. We also
would like to hear from anyone who has been involved with the
production of the magazine. Do you have any photographs
of the production team of printers and staplers or funny
memories [try to remember dates].
Are you a member of a club with archives? If so do you have
any memories to share. Are you an ex member of a club that
is no longer in place, do have any records or dates of closure?
Do you have access to parish records from 1977 onwards if so
may we access them to extract interesting snippets? etc etc
By now you have an idea, we have mentioned just a few
areas, we are interested in all areas of community life for the
last 40 years. Please help us make a lasting record, we hope
to have at least one page for each year so please sort out
those drawers and albums for press cuttings of events in yours
or your parents/grandparents lives to share with us all.
We hope to produce the same amount as for the monthly
magazine with an option to buy extra copies at cost price.
Memorabilia can be left with any of the editors listed at the
back of the magazine or in the post boxes in the Post Office,
High Street Chemist, or Horstead Farm to fork & fish. Please
put stuff in an envelope with your address on so we can return
when we have scanned to our records. If possible note and
date backs of photos and press clippings that do not have
dates.
We wait in anticipation, not just for new volunteers to carry on
for another 40 years but news of those who have helped since
the start.
An example of what we would like is this press cutting
Does anyone know the date? Some Clues, It was the 87 th
by
David Baldacci
David Baldacci
I have a new favourite author and
David Baldacci is it! Not only is he a
‘hotty’ but a prolific writer of
international best sellers! His books
have been translated in forty
languages and sold in more than
eighty countries. His latest series of
crime thrillers are based on the cases
taken on by his new character, John
Puller. He’s a combat veteran and the
very best military investigator in the
US Army’s Criminal Investigation
Division. This novel takes place in West Virginia, which is
called ‘The Mountain State’ because the whole state is in the
Appalachian Mountains. These mountains contain coal that
has been mined to support about five state’s electrical needs
for over a hundred years. West Virginia is also known for its
poverty and
remoteness. From
the six lane
carriageway, it is a
stunning place, but
wander off into the
back roads and a
whole new level of
deprivation and
survival are blatant.
It is in this setting
that the bulk of this novel takes place.
Puller is assigned to investigate a brutal murder of a high
ranking military man and his family in a rundown hillbilly
community far from any amenities such as hospitals or malls.
He is partnered with the local homicide detective, a woman
who is very deeply entrenched in her community and the
people living in it. It is a good thing that he is a fast learner
and well honed in his investigating skills as one deception
after another is thrown at him. I believe that because it is the
first of a series of books with John Puller as the main
character, Balducci has taken time to include some of his
experiences in combat - and always with a tie in to the crime
at hand. Puller’s family takes a surprisingly important role in
the book, so don’t be impatient as they appear throughout
the novel. This book is fast paced and always a battle
between good and evil.
Just when I thought that the book was all wrapped up, I
found that there were several more chapters. What’s this?
It’s the best part of the whole book, that’s what it is! I never
saw it coming and it just about blew me away like the
explosions in the book. If you like an edgy thriller disguised
as a murder mystery, that will whip you from one tense
moment to another, this is a book you will thoroughly enjoy. I
can’t wait to get into the next book in the series. What an
exhilarating find! Susie
Ed dp: Thank you Susie, I spotted the book at a Wroxham Scout book sale,
thought about your review and gave it a try,. One ot those “don't put down,
must read roller coaster rides” Baldacci also makes it so easy to imagine where
he is writing about, the fact part of his fiction.
COLTISHALL & HORSTEAD W.I.
2016 ended with a Bring and
Share Supper. A warm, happy
and entertaining occasion
where members and their
guests enjoyed a meal with
something to suit every taste.
This was followed by a
wonderful guest speaker,
Marko, who amused and
fascinated us with both stories
of his life in showbiz and
cartoon drawings. If this
wasn't enough Marko had us
all producing our own
cartoons.
However, the evening was
tinged with sadness as we
were saying goodbye to Judi
Howett and her husband,
Chris. Judi has worked
Judi with new president Rosemary
tirelessly on behalf of the WI
in many roles, latterly as our
Secretary, and will be greatly
missed by us all. We wish Judi
and Chris every happiness in
their new home.
With a new year ahead it's
time to look forward to what
we will be doing in 2017. Our
new programme has
something for everyone with a
variety of interesting and
enjoyable events; as diverse
as talks on beekeeping, The
Woodland
Trust and
indian
spices plus
trips which
will be
organised
during the
year.
If you are
reading
this and
wonder
what the
WI is all
about then read on: The
Women’s Institute originated in
Canada in 1897 with British
branches being established in
1915. Since then the WI has
become the largest voluntary
women's organisation in the UK
with almost 220,000 members in
approximately 6,300 branches. It
is for women of all ages, religion
and backgrounds providing them
with educational opportunities,
the chance to
build new skills, to take part in a
wide variety of activities and to
campaign on issues that matter
to them and their communities.
On a personal level, although I
only joined in May last year,
being a member has enriched
my life not only in terms of
learning about new things and
helping make new friends, but
feeling part of a much bigger
organisation which promotes,
inspires and influences women's
lives.
Our branch meets in The Church
Room, Rectory Road, Coltishall,
on the third Wednesday of the
month at 7.30 pm. Our next
meeting is on 15th February
when our speaker will be
demonstrating sugarcraft.
If you would like to join us as a
guest at this or any other
meeting please come along,
you'll be assured of a warm
welcome. You don't have to join
there and then and this is a
great opportunity to see if the
W.I. is for you. Llook forward to
meeting you there in the future.
Wiggly Worms
Unfortunately it’s not just the garden where
you might come across a wiggly worm. If you
are often in the company of young children
you may well get the pleasure of being asked
to inspect their business in the toilet because
they can see something “wiggling” in their
poo (sorry there is no polite way of putting
that).
Luckily the human threadworm bears little
resemblance to an earthworm. As the name
suggests they are thin like a thread and are usually white in
colour. Although commonly found in children under ten, they can
infect any one and as I suspect the majority of people really
don’t fancy worms in their bottom it is useful to know how to
treat them.
How do you know if you have them? The main symptom is
lots of itching, especially around the bottom but it can spread to
other areas of your nether regions. The itching is often much
worse at night because this is when the females lay their eggs
along with some mucus which causes irritation.
The worms themselves are thin and white. Sometimes you can
see them moving, but if you identify anything that looks like a
worm then it is worth considering treatment.
How do you get them? The reason it is so common in
children is they tend to be a little less fastidious about washing
their hands before eating. Worm eggs are easily transferable;
usually they get under the fingertips of a sufferer and then are
transferred to other surfaces. If these eggs are then ingested the
worms are able to start reproducing in a new person. Washing
hands regularly before eating or preparing food is a good way to
break the cycle, paying special attention to cleaning under the
nails.
Treatment optionsThreadworms are easily treated and
treatments can be bought over the counter in all Pharmacies. It
is important to treat all the household members at the same time
to stop a reinfestation later on.
The drug of choice is mebendazole and is widely available as a
chewable tablet. One tablet is usually sufficient to kill all the live
worms and a second can be taken after fourteen days if
required, you can ask your pharmacist whether this is advisable
in your case. A liquid version is also available for those who
can’t manage the tablet.
Worms live for about six weeks. During this time it is crucial to
pay particular attention to hygiene measures to prevent
reinfection. Information can be found on NHS choices website,
but includes making sure bedding, towels and clothing are all
washed as soon as worms are suspected. Clean all surfaces
thoroughly and make sure fingernails are kept clean, and where
possible, short. Daily washing also helps to remove the eggs.
Don’t blame your pets though – they aren’t responsible for
threadworms.
When should you see the Doctor? Usually threadworms can
be treated successfully over the counter. The treatment isn’t
recommended in children under 2 years or for pregnant or
breastfeeding women, in these cases a visit to the GP may be
required.
If you have other symptoms associated such as weight loss,
signs of bacterial infection, continued loss of appetite or the
treatment hasn’t worked you should also go and see your doctor.
Worms are very common so don’t be embarrassed about seeking
advice, even if you are not sure that you have them.
Brownies Brave Showers
upper common.
‘old’ news.
On Sunday 20th November, two organisation came together in
between showers to plant a wheel barrow full of daffodil bulbs on
Coltishall Lower Common.
Members of Coltishall Brownies led by Joanna French were invited
by Coltishall Commons Management Trust led by Peter Croot
became a slick team of planters after a short introduction and basic
training given by Peter. His team were on hand with an array of hole
making tools to prepare holes at the Anchor Street end of the Common.
The weather was kind as heavy rain preceded the event and more
arrived as everyone was on their way home.
Another event planned for the day after on the upper common by the
Central Island filling Station and River room was called off because of
the forecast of rain and high winds. Wind is a big concern here and
the School who were providing the planters were rightly concerned
about the branches breaking off the large poplar tree. Another date is
fixed for Thursday 24 th at 2pm.
Coltishall and Horstead Sunday School It was with great sadness that I decided to retire, in December,
from leading the Coltishall and Horstead Sunday School. I
began helping Connie Wilson in 1977 which is 40 years ago.
During that time such a lot has happened and I have so many
happy memories. There have been Nativities in Coltishall,
Horstead and Hautbois churches. We planted trees, now
flourishing near the Village Hall and the football ground. In
the1980's we began sponsoring, through Action Aid, an
African child the first one was Amy who lived in Sierra
Leonne. Then there was Rogers, and Mercy in Malawi. In
1999 Michael and I visited Rogers in Malawi. It was a very
memorable visit. We hadn't realised how very poor these
people are but also how happy. Nora Hall has kindly taken
over the Sunday school from me and is happy for me to
continue encouraging the children to support Mercy.
We have also had lots of concerts in the church, parties in my
garden, my house, and the church rooms.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you for
supporting me —my dear friend Iris, all the mums, dads, and
grandparents and all the people in the village who have
helped with fundraising events and of course the children,
A recent photo of Jill in the Centre with he friend and fellow Sunday School there must be a lot since 1977! And I have loved them all
Planting Spring bulbs with Willow Class.
A barrowful of bulbs, a group of experts on hand, a beautiful autumnal afternoon
and twenty seven excited and joyous children not to mention the accompanying
adults – what better way to spend a Thursday afternoon in mid-autumn sunshine!
Great fun was had by one and all. The children listened attentively to the
instructions and then off they went – such freedom to plant their bulbs where they
wished and as many as they could manage. We had three different areas to plant
and the children showed their engagement and delight throughout!
We adults agreed that we would return in the Spring to celebrate and
enjoy the children’s enthusiastic planting. Learning can happen when the
experience is memorable and our Year 1 children are still talking to Mrs
Spooner about their afternoon on the Common. Bring on the Spring!
Five wins from seven since the last Marlpit article saw the
Vikings maintain their challenge for a top four finish in London
One North. Ahead of their 21 January visit to unbeaten
runaway leaders Tring, the Vikings were fifth on fifty six points;
third placed Chingford, who play at Scottow on 28 January,
had three more points and Brentwood, in second, eight.
The Vikings began 2017 with two big wins, Chelmsford 52 -14
away and Barking 62 -3 at home, scoring eighteen tries in total
Will Hodgson
including six for Will Hodgson (pictured). Their second half
performance against Barking was arguably their best of the
season so far, running in seven tries including four in ten
devastating minutes.
Matt Hodgson was December's Chalk Hill Brewery Player of the
Month, the second time he has won the award this season.
Head of Rugby James Brooks said of the fly half, "Matt's play
shows a maturity far beyond his years. He implements game
plans well, is always looking to learn and improve, and gives
110% at training sessions and in matches." A UEA law student,
Matt is in his second season at Scottow and relishing the
environment there commenting," I'm really enjoying being part
of this squad. The coaching support is good with training very
focussed on developing both individual and team skills. We are
maturing as a team, learning how to win close games and
building towards a top four finish."
The Youth teams have begun their campaigns in various
County and Regional Cups with the Under 15s already assured
of a place in the Norfolk Plate Final following wins over
Norwich and Lowestoft & Yarmouth, whilst the Under 14s beat
West Norfolk in their Norfolk Cup game. Meanwhile the Colts
had a solid win over Holt in a friendly. The Minis have been
back in action too after the Xmas/New Year break. New players
of all ages are welcome, contact Al Hepburn:
ahepburn.vikingrugby@gmail.com
After the Chingford match on 28 January the Vikings next
home game is against Fullerians on 18 February; kick off for
both will be 3.00 pm, there is ample free parking available.
Photo by Hywel Jones;
As many of you may already be aware there has recently been
an outbreak of Canine Parvovirus in Norwich. In fact, it was
probably the most significant that I can remember during my
time working in Norfolk. Parvovirus first reared its head in the
UK as an epidemic in the 1970’s and resulted in the death of
thousands of dogs during a short period of time. Since then
vaccination has brought the disease under control and these
days we fortunately only see isolated outbreaks from one year
to the next. The virus most commonly affects unvaccinated
young dogs causing potentially fatal immunosuppression,
vomiting and diarrhoea. However, where there is a high
enough viral burden or immunosuppressed animals it can
cause disease in adult dogs, and this was the case in the
recent outbreak.
So what can we do? The simple answer is to ensure we
vaccinate our dogs sufficiently. It is thanks to vaccination that
we have almost eradicated many diseases such as Canine
Distemper, but failure to continue to maintain vaccination
status will inevitably lead to recurrence of some diseases.
Parvovirus is a good example of one such disease because it
can survive in the environment for years at a time. There has
been a public recent trend towards avoiding vaccinations as
some deem them as unnecessary. Although there is some truth
behind the concept that some dogs maintain life-long immunity
following their first 2 years annual
vaccinations it is not the case for all
dogs, which means missing
vaccinations can leave some pets
unprotected. There are also some
diseases which all dogs require
regular vaccinations for even if they
are still immune to others. This is
the reason behind annual boosters
and why we always recommend that
dogs are either blood tested to
check their immune status or
maintained with annual
vaccinations.
With this in mind Westover Vets are offering a vaccination
amnesty during the months of January and February where
vaccination courses that have lapsed can be restarted for the
price of an annual booster. For any more information please
contact us at the surgery.
Research
Foundation over
the past 5 years
and we are
always so
grateful for their
support.
26 years ago, I had the joy of
welcoming twins into the
world, Holly and Joe, but sadly,
8 weeks later, Joe became
unwell and within hours we
had lost him to Pneumococcal
Meningitis.
Then just 5 years ago, whilst studying at
University in Sheffield, my 19 year old
Son Ryan went to bed feeling ill with flulike
symptoms and didn’t wake up again.
He had contracted Meningococcal
Meningitis. A deadly strain, if not caught
early.
Through our deep sadness and
devastation that had been ensued on our
Family, we have raised almost £90,000
for the Foundation in Ryan and Joe’s
memory and we will continue our
personal fundraising as a way of fighting
back at the disease that cruelly took my
children.
There was alot of media coverage last
year concerning the MenB vaccine and
you may have seen that there was a
massive petition to get the vaccine
available freely to all children. Just to
clarify, the Meningitis B vaccine has been
introduced into the infant immunisation
programme, meaning that all babies born
since September 2015 will now have this
vaccine alongside the other vaccines
normally given at that age.
Unfortunately, it is still not available
freely for children, students and young
adults, who are the most vulnerable ages
to contract the disease. It is however,
available privately at a cost of
approximately £200/£300 - a fee that my
3 children and 4 grandchildren had to
pay to have some peace of mind and
although no vaccine is 100% effective,
it’s a small price to pay.
Students of the age of 14-16 and
University Freshers have been able to
have a free vaccine to cover strains ACW
& Y, but this vaccine does not cover
strain B, the deadliest strain of all.
However, the MenB vaccine does cover
all of these strains.
By donating this money to the
Foundation, will help to enable them
continue to research the disease and
fight to get the vaccine widely available
for all those who need it and for free.
Please remember - It doesn’t just happen
to other people – it’s a
very real and frightening
disease that can mimic flu
and a general feeling of
unwell and can frequently
go undetected by medics.
I would advise everyone to
make themselves aware of
the symptoms and trust
their instincts.
There are still strains for
which there is no vaccine
available and there will still
Joe
be people who are not
protected by these vaccinations.
I will never come to terms with losing my
boys to this dreadful disease, but by
raising awareness, this will hopefully save
lives in the future.
Thank you once again to Landamore’s
and their customers for your continued
kindness and generosity. It means so
much to everyone affected by Meningitis
and to future generations that will benefit
from the research and support given by
the Foundation.
The Probus Club of Broadlands is a fellowship club for men who
are retired or semi-retired. We meet on the last Wednesday of
every month between 12.15 and 15.00 at The Norfolk Mead
Hotel, Coltishall for drinks, a delicious chef cooked lunch and a
guest speaker presentation on a variety of local and general
interest subjects.
At our last meeting on 30 th November we welcomed our guest
speaker Roger Jones a volunteer for Norfolk Wildlife Trust
(NWT)
Roger gave us an informative and interesting summary and slide
show of the twenty-three species of wild orchids that can be
found in and close to Norfolk. All of which are protected by law
and should not be removed or cut when discovered (photos Ok
of course)
He began by giving us an overview of the current NWT
structure:
The NWT is the oldest County Wildlife Trust (now in its 90th
year). Their first purchase of 435 acres has now grown to
100,000 acres. Currently they employ around 70 staff and 1200
volunteers to help receive over 300,000 visitors per year to their
34 reserves It has nominated 1300 County Wildlife Sites and
monitors 112 Roadside Nature Reserves and is participating in
the Wildlife Trusts ‘Living Landscapes’ Project.
Main Benefits of NWT Membership
Access to all reserves and visitor center
Natural World magazine 3 times a year
Run 8 local members’ groups in Norfolk, promoting organized
walks and arrange presentations/talks/discussions at a variety of
local venues.
Roger then introduced us to a variety number of local orchids
which can be found in woodland, churchyards, heaths, coastal
dunes and even our own garden…bee, broken flowered red,
common spotted, marsh, early marsh, marsh fragrant, butterfly,
bird nest, cochinae, pyramidial, southern marsh, leopard marsh,
narrow leaf marsh, fen, to name but a few.
A variety of colours, shades, shapes and sizes, growing from
one inch (amazing!) to three feet and more perked our interest.
LADIES SLIPPER ORCHID
(cypripedium calceoluo)
The above orchid extremely
rare orchid was at once almost
extinct until it was found by
chance growing in Yorkshire in
the 1930’s
It’s location was a closely
guarded secret, and given
special security when
showcased at the Chelsea
Flower Show. This orchid is strictly protected by wildlife laws.
Following questions from our members we thanked Roger for
his visit and look forward to hearing more from the NWT in
future meetings.
The Probus Club of Broadlands is always keen to welcome new
members, or to hear from those who would like to know more…
We look forward to meeting and greeting you at one of our
future meetings.
May we start this month by wishing all
our readers a prosperous 2017, and to
say a huge thank you to everyone who
supported us and our charitable fund
raising throughout the last year.
We had two incredibly successful fund
raising events that raised big sums of
money for our selected charities. Our
“win a car” raffle was won by John Beck
from Norfolk who had purchased his
winning ticket, number 04939 at the
Norfolk Show. After deducting the cost
of the car itself which was generously
reduced in price by suppliers NMG of
Norwich, we made a superb £7541 to be
split among our designated charities,
East Anglia Air Ambulance, East Anglia
Children’s Hospice Nook Appeal, End
Polio Now, with the last quarter being
shared amongst a number of other local
charities supported by our rotary club.
Equally successful were our Santa
collections with almost £3000 raised,
again split between EAAA, EACH and
other local charities supported by our
club. By the time you read this,
presentations will have been made so
there should be photographs next time.
Now it is time to start looking
forward to what 2017 has in store, and
we have a special treat for everyone in
March. We are fortunate to have a one
off opportunity to hear the Derbyshire
Constabulary male voice choir
performing a varied selection of music at
St. Catherine’s Church, Ludham, on
Saturday, 25 th March 2017 at 7.30
p.m. Tickets cost just £10 and
refreshments are available. Tickets are
Looking further ahead, we are planning
a grand garden party and barbecue in
the grounds of Sloley Hall with the
chance to hear award winning Hayley
Moss, supported by another local
performer Terry Adams. This all takes
place on 10 th September – details
FROM THE REVEREND
CHRISTOPHER ENGELSEN
Dear friends,
I hope you all had a peaceful
Christmas…that may all seem in the
distant past now we are in February.
The shepherds have returned to their
flocks, the wise men gone back to
their kingdoms,
and Mary, Joseph and Jesus have
left Bethlehem –fleeing as refugees
(what’s new?)-before eventually
returning to Nazareth where Jesus
grows up. But in Church we have
one last look at Christmas (with our
cribs still up) and a look ahead to
the forty days of Lent as we get
ready for Easter, via the cross of
Good Friday.
This one last look back and looking
forward happens in the service of
Candlemas on Sunday 5 th
February, which all our churches are
keeping, and it will be the theme of
the 10am Family Service at
Coltishall-and , as the name
suggests-we will have candles.
Christmas may be gone –but the work
begins now! God’s work of bringing his
light to the world around us. So do
join us at a Candlemas service (The
Presentation of Christ) and be present
as a light in the world.
How will you, how will I, bring light to
others? We all can do that in various
ways. The Good Neighbours volunteers in
supporting others; our offering of support
and friendship, being positive and hopeful
in a dark world, praying for peace, being
thankful for the blessings we have where
we live…and just valuing the good that is in
you and others, -these can all be the candle
you carry in which Christ can shine.
I will be in the Red Lion on Tuesday 14 th
February from 10.30am until 11.30am and
all are welcome to join me for a chat or to
share any concerns.
There will be a Prayer Walk on Thursday
16 th meeting at Coltishall Church at
11.00am and going to St Theobald’s (AKA
St Mary’s) Church, returning to Piece of
Cake for those who want a warm up.
All are welcome to come to the Lent
Lunches at the Rectory (soup and a roll)
each Tuesday in the season of Lent,
starting Tuesday 7 th March at 12.30pm
until 2.00pm. We shall be hearing about
ways of praying and knowing God more
deeply. Do join us on the spiritual journey.
Just come along.
If anyone would like me or my colleague
The Revd Keith Dignum to visit them-to let
us know. We are willing to visit those in
hospital, or who are at house bound, or to
visit anyone who would like prayer or just a
listening ear. All are welcome to our
services.
All good wishes
Brian’s Christmas Lights
this was the final year on this scale, there will be some lights next
Christmas but as I'll be 75 next month I find it harder each year!
I start on the display mid-October and it uses over 100 metres of
armoured cable connected to 20 waterproof boxes containing ninety
13 amp sockets to supply nearly 6000 L.E.D.s, + 47 lit figures & other
lights + 1 P.I.R. sensor and over 120 metres of rope. The display used
approx 2.8 kilowatt of electricity per hour, 5 1/2 hours per night for 32
nights. (I'll let you do the maths!)
Many thanks to everyone who visited the display and made a donation
to the BIG C. I collected £475-00 for this very worthy cause and this
has been forwarded to BIG C.
I have been collecting for good causes for many years & the last 6
years alone has totalled £2360 for charity, mainly the BIG C.
As this was definitely the last year I will be doing the display on this scale I would like to thank you for your support in the past & wish you
