Short day - Red
Gamay
A late short day red onion with good handling and storage capacity (2-4 months). Medium to
large flattened round to grano bulbs sizing to 2.4-4.3 in. (60-110 mm). Gamay has a vigorous
plant habit with partial resistance to foliar diseases compared to most short day red varieties.
Intense red external color with excellent internal ring color development and good single centers.
Develops a tight neck, ideal for curing.
Intermediate - Red
Cabernet
Cabernet is a medium to large intermediate red onion for storage, fresh market or export. With
a vigorous plant habit, Cabernet produces uniform globe-shaped bulbs of outstanding holding
ability and high quality. Excellent internal ring color development combined with single centers
and partial resistance to foliar diseases make this variety a standard for organic onion production.
Typical harvest is July through August, offering earliness, firmness and 4-6 months storability.
Gamay
Monastrell
Monastrell is an intermediate day onion that boasts high quality, single-centered bulbs. Plants
are upright and strong against disease. Monastrell has an impressively dark red color and a round
shape. Bulbs are uniform and resistant to sunscald in the field. Interiors have excellent internal
ring color development. This variety matures slightly later than Cabernet and is larger in size,
averaging 3.5-4.0 in. Recommended for fresh market, bulbs will store 3-5 months.
Red Emperor
Early to mid intermediate red onion variety with good handling and storage characteristics
(4-6 months). Red Emperor produces flattened globe to grano shaped bulbs of 2.4-3.5 in.
(60-90 mm). Very good intensity red external color and internal ring color development and single
centers. Red Emperor has a tight neck, which is ideal for curing. Vigorous plant habit with good
partial resistance to foliar diseases compared to many red varieties.
