END OF AN ERA FOR WONDERLAND FOUNDER
CONT. FROM FRONT PAGE
“When my daughter Chantelle
was five, I realised there
was no pre-primary school in
Gonubie to send her to,” said
Main, who trained at the
Graaff-Reinet Teachers’ College.
“I started with 22 children and
one other teacher.” Starting
off with R50 in the bank
meant she had to be resourceful
about teaching materials
and toys.
“We cut up colouring book
covers for puzzles and made
sand-pit toys with bottles.
“At first we had only three
paint colours that were donated
to us – brown, green and
yellow – and my husband
Bruce made small pieces of
furniture for us with his woodwork
pupils at West Bank
High.
“We also had no cleaners and
scrubbed the floors and had
to pack the school away under
the stage every day so
the hall could be used for
badminton.
“We didn’t get paid for a year
because we used money for
equipment.” As intake grew,
Wonderland shifted onto municipal
land adjoining the
church and the school expanded
classroom by classroom.
In 2013 it launched its first
Grade 1 class. This week
Grade 4 was added to the
growing school which now
boasts 175 children, 10
teachers and four support
staff.
“The past 40 years have been
the ride of my life. I had wanted
to teach since I was a little
girl and it was a dream come
TO ADVERTISE CONTACT:
true to start my own pre-primary.
“This week I woke up and
realised the dream is over,”
said Main, who has been
known as Aunty Rika by thousands
of children.
“Children want to be in mommy
or daddy’s school and it’s
been amazing to see the children
of past pupils come
here. Some past pupils have
emigrated but still pop in to
visit. I never forget names or
faces. I think it is the memories
of happy childhoods that
bring them back.”
Main said the most significant
change she had noted
over the years was the decrease
of stay-at-home mothers.
“When I started mothers
would fetch their children at
12 noon, but now most children
attend aftercare. There
are only one or two mothers
at the school who don’t work.”
Having handed over the reins
to new principal Pauline
Drake, Main plans to volunteer
in children’s hospital
wards and be active in the
Gonubie community.
Past pupil Kelly du Plessis,
now a Grade 1 teacher in
Durban, said “Aunty Rika”
had been a patient, warm
and loving teacher.
“I was there in 1985 when I
was five and she never had
any other expression except
a smile.”
A third-grade teacher is getting to know her pupils
on the first day of school. She turns to one little
girl and says, ‘And what does your daddy do?’ The
girl replies, ‘Whatever Mummy tells him to.’
Losing a wife can be hard. In most cases, it’s
damned near impossible.
LIFE GETS EASIER FOR BCM PRE-PAYERS
Buffalo City Metro (BCM) residents
will be pleased to
know that they can now purchase
BCM electricity in the
comfort of their own homes
and no longer have to wait in
long queues.
In October, executive mayor
Xola Phakathi revealed his
action plan for the first 100
days in office to senior BCM
managers, politicians and the
media.
One of many things he promised
was that the metro’s ratepayers
will have a
pre-payment system to buy
prepaid electricity through
the internet, ATM and cellphones.
R O N N I E S
The city finally introduced the
new technology to assist its
challenged electricity vendor
system earlier this month.
In the past, BCM ratepayers
have had to endure long
queues and the weather
when wanting to buy electricity
at vendors.
BCM spokesman Sibusiso
Cindi said the system is functioning
and no challenges
have been experienced.
To be able to do this, you
have to register at
www.wireit.co.za and there
are three steps to follow:
PARKSIDE PRIMARY GETS
BOOST FROM MUSIC SHOW
PARKSIDE Primary was delighted
with the substantial
donation of funds raised by IT
consulting company EOH
through the performance of
Cape Town band Joedhouse
at the Guild Theatre recently.
Not only were the paying public
entertained at the theatre,
but pupils were inspired when
the artists visited the school,
sharing some songs and
words of advice
and motivation.
Ashur Petersen,
24, son of the
late South African
icon Taliep
Petersen, and
Rick-Lynn
Groenewald,
son of the late
SA legend
Ricardo (singer
of the hit I love
you Daddy),
got the crowd
singing and
dancing to the
covers they performed.
Joedhouse leader Devanish
Hendricks also shared some
words of advice with the children.
“EOH [who sponsored the
show] approached us and we
were on board right away.
This is great opportunity to
deposit back into the community
and have a positive impact
on youngsters in our
personal capacity.
“It’s difficult to persuade youngsters
into a career in music. I
hope to chat with some of the
children with a passion for
music today and give them
some advice and assistance.”
Hendricks told learners that it
was important to make good
choices at a young age and
find a career you loved and
were passionate about. He
also encouraged them to respect
their teachers and stay
in school in order to get their
future on track.
EOH executive director Dion
Ramoo heard about the plight
of the under-resourced
school in Parkside
and sought
to assist
through this initiative.
No electricity,
vandalised toilets
and no water
forced the
school to shut
its doors for 10
days in August
until water was
restored. A lack
of security
around the
school and corroding
infrastructure leaves it
vulnerable to theft.
Petersen said: “When Devanish
asked me to perform and
told me about the plight of this
school, I was down immediately.
Education is a right and
should never be stolen from
you… I know what it’s like to
have everything and nothing.
I know that God never puts
you through what you can’t
handle.”
Principal Brian Fritz said he
hoped to use the funds to
build a secure wall around the
property, upgrade the toilet
facilities and the admin block
and increase security.
NEW RELEASE

FRIDAY 20 JANUARY 2017 SUBURBAN BUGLE 7
MATHS BOFFIN'S HELP NEEDY
“It begins with a desire”.
These are the words from the
founders of Omega Junior, a
community organisation that
aims to create a sense of
passion and desire among
high school pupils in the Border
region to learn mathematics.
Omega serves as a network
for high school pupils of all
social backgrounds in the
Border region of the Eastern
Cape, through which they
can develop their skills in
mathematics and be empowered
by the opportunities afforded
to them through their
involvement with the organisation.
Omega Junior’s chairman,
Thando Dyasi, and its secretary,
Obakhe Nkohla, recently
started a stationery drive at
Vincent Park Mall to help
bridge the gap between pupils
who have the skill but not
the correct mathematical resources.
“As founders of Omega Junior
we have tutored multiple pupils
from different backgrounds
and discovered that
some pupils lack the essential
stationery which hinders
them from excelling in the
subject.
“Therefore this stationery
drive is aimed at addressing
this issue,” Dyasi said. Apart
from having a passion for
mathematics, these youngsters
provide practical assistance
in the form of tutoring to
previously disadvantaged pupils,
enabling them to significantly
improve their
mathematical skills and
marks.
“Currently we have more than
100 pupils from different
schools enrolled for tutoring
and we would like the Department
of Education to assist
us in any way possible with
our initiative,” Nkohla said.
Nyameko and Philemon
Ngcelwane high schools in
Mdantsane are two of the
schools Omega Junior has
assisted to ensure better
mathematics results among
their pupils.
The two maths boffins hope
the community will assist by
donating basic stationery,
calculators and mathematical
instruments which will be
given to underprivileged pupils
tutored by Omega Junior.
Tutoring sessions are offered
at Meals on Wheels in Nahoon
and are free of charge.
Donations can be dropped
off at SPAR outlets in Amalinda,
Cambridge and Beacon.
A blonde rings up an airline. She asks, "How long are your
flights from America to England?" The woman on the other
end of the phone says, "Just a minute..." The blonde says,
"Thanks!" and hangs up the phone.
Toyota Prius racks up the awards
THE Toyota Prius has been
named the Best Family Car in
the UK Car of the Year Awards
2017, proof positive that the
world’s most successful hybrid
has evolved into a car that
ranks as Britain’s best all-rounder:
smart, practical, spacious,
reliable and genuinely fun to
drive.
The independent award judges,
numbering some of Britain’s
most experienced and best-respected
motoring journalists,
had wide-ranging praise for the
multi-award-winning fourthgeneration
Prius, which was
launched last year. Their opinions
confirm Toyota’s success
in transforming Prius’ dynamic
performance and its driver appeal,
true to its mission to create
“ever-better cars”.
John Challen, Managing Director
of the UK Car of the Year
Awards, declared: “The Prius
story continues – and it’s one
that gets better with every release.
The shift from ‘hybrid’ car
to mainstream is complete.”
His fellow judges hailed Prius
as ‘a car you’d want to own
rather than just benefit from its
low emissions’ and acclaimed it
for offering ‘everything you
need in a family car – spacious,
enormous boot, plenty of standard
equipment and those all-important
fuel economy figures’.
Many of the qualities that make
Prius
standout
ch
a
oi
ce as a
family car can be
attributed to the Toyota New
Global Architecture-based platform
on which it is built. TNGA
gives the car a lower centre of
gravity, which directly contributes
to better handling response
and stability. The driver
sits lower in the car, which
makes for a more rewarding
and engaging experience at the
wheel.
TNGA is not just about dynamic
quality however. It allows designers
the freedom to craft a
car with richer visual appeal,
with lower lines overall and a
more athletic profile. Interior
packaging is more rational
too, with the
best possible
use
ma
de
of the space available. Familyfriendly
boot proportions have
been secured thanks to a more
compact (yet energy-rich) hybrid
battery and a double wishbone
suspension system –
features which don’t intrude into
the load-space.
All these developments have
not compromised Prius’ fundamental
low emissions and high
fuel efficiency. In fact, the
gains made in performance
with the new model are greater
than any previous improvement
between Prius generations.
Official test figures show
combined cycle fuel economy
of 3 litres per 100 kilometres
and CO2 output of 70 g/km.
Safety is a prime concern for
family motorists, and an area
where Prius has excelled, winning
the award for the best-performing
large family car in
EuroNCAP’s 2016 test programme.
Toyota is particularly proud of
this recognition, as it strives to
develop ‘always safer cars’
with a particular focus on active
safety, through the spread
of the ‘Toyota Safety Sense’
package. This package was an
important contributor to Prius’
strong performance in the EuroNCAP
tests.
Each year, EuroNCAP publishes
a list of the cars that have
performed best in their respective
categories. This is the second
time a Toyota received
such a title, with the Verso being
‘Best in Class’ in the small
MPV segment back in 2010.
