young fisher-persons and their guardians
sees up to 30 boats of anxious anglers
vying for top prize annually. In September,
the Fall Classic Catch and Release Walleye
HUNTING
Hunters travelling to our area will find a wide range of hunting opportunities. With many remote locations to choose from, you
could find yourself hiking through some apparent untouched wilderness in search of the north’s majestic giants. It is known that our
wilderness provides some of the best hunting for Black Bear and Moose in North America. In addition to these popular animals, hunters
can enjoy opportunities for whitetail deer, small game, and duck and migratory bird hunting.
WHITETAIL DEER
Whitetail deer can be found throughout much of Ontario. Their range appears to be expanding
northward over time. Abundant food makes almost any forested or bushy area suitable for deer,
including parks and green spaces created by people. In winter, as snow deepens, deer concentrate
in areas that provide food and shelter from deep snow. During the spring and summer, deer eat
leafy material from woody plants, grasses and herbs. They also eat mushrooms and blueberries. In
autumn and winter, deer depend largely on the twigs and buds that are within their reach. Acorns
are a favourite autumn food for whitetail deer living in Northwestern Ontario.
Size: 0.9 to 1.1 m (3.0-3.5 ft) Adult Buck: 45 to 136 kg (100-300 Ib) Adult Doe: 39 to 60 kg (85-130 Ib)
MOOSE
Moose are found across northern and central Ontario. They live near lakes, muskegs and streams
of the boreal forest and on the northern tundra.
Moose are the largest animal in Ontario. Large males (bulls) weigh up to 600 kilograms. Moose live
on a diet of twigs, leaves, shrubs, upland plants and water plants. Moose tolerate cold very well but
suffer from heat. In summer, especially during black fly season, moose often cool off in water for
several hours each day. Moose are strong swimmers and can dive more than five metres in search
of food on the bottom of the lake.
Size: 1.5 to 1.8 m (5.5-6.0 ft) Bull: 400 to 545 kg (880-1,200 Ib) Cow: 375 to 535 kg (825-1,180 Ib)
BLACK BEAR
Black bears live throughout most of Ontario and prefer forested areas where they are best able
to find food, refuge and den sites. When they are not hibernating, bears spend most of their
time looking for food. In the summer, they eat berries such as blueberries, strawberries and
raspberries. In the fall, they turn their attention to hazelnuts, mountain ash, acorns and beech
nuts. While black bears will eat carrion, insects, fish, deer and moose calves, the bulk of their diet
is made up of plants. They like to find lots of high energy food - like huge berry patches - that will
help them fatten up fast. Their survival and ability to have young depends on them doubling their
weight before winter hibernation. While black is the most common colour, brown and cinnamon
phases also occur.
Adult Female: 59 to 104 kg (130-230 Ib) Adult Male: 91 to 181 kg (200-400 Ib)
Provincial
Parks
Woodland Caribou Provincial Park is
one of the three participating wilderness
parks in Northwest Ontario where
visitors can complete a backcountry
paddling quest and become eligible
to win a brand new Souris River
kevlar canoe or XY Company designer
paddles. Find out more about the great
Northwest Wilderness Quest at
www.OntarioParks.com/nwquest.
The Red Lake area is the “gateway” to
Woodland Caribou Provincial Park. Known
as a cultural landscape, at over 486,000
hectares in size Woodland Caribou
Provincial Park offers a vast roadless tract
of uncut boreal forest protected within
the system of Ontario’s Provincial Parks. It
protects healthy functioning ecosystems,
outstanding cultural landscapes and
significant natural features including its
namesake the secretive woodland caribou.
To many outdoor travellers Woodland
Caribou Provincial Park offers a giant
playground. With approximately 2000
kilometres of maintained canoe routes
and 20 outpost camps and lodges you
may experience everything from paddling
quiet lakes and streams to the comforts of
quality roofed accommodation. Solitude,
unforgettable fishing for walleye,
northern pike and lake trout and exquisite
scenery are a mainstay of both types of
experiences. Shutterbugs will enjoy the
chance to capture local wildlife. Moose,
caribou, beaver, bear, bald eagle, song
and shorebirds are regularly seen. Lynx,
wolverine and wolves may also make their
presence known.
The park also captures the headwaters
of the Bloodvein River. Designated a
Canadian Heritage River, the Bloodvein
is celebrated for its cultural and historical
importance. The river flows westward
over 350 kilometers to eventually reach
Lake Winnipeg in central Manitoba.
REMOTE YET ACCESSIBLE
Roadless yet accessible is a unique feature
of Woodland Caribou. Park staff are
available to provide general information
to get you aquatinted with the park. Local
outfitting services will help with your
more detailed trip planning needs ranging
from partial to complete outfitting, shuttle
services to the parks road and water entry
points and float plane access in or out of
the parks interior.
There is no greater experience in which to
learn and discover Northwestern Ontario’s
most precious natural resources.
WHERE NATURE STILL RULES
For all who plan to visit Woodland Caribou,
be prepared to experience nature on
its terms. Amidst its wildness you will
witness rugged beauty and experience its
powerful moods. Prepare to be humbled
by towering cliffs or by a sudden summer
storm as you scurry to shelter. Understand
that the trails you share with others were
laid out generations ago by the ancestors
of the area’s First Nations. Observe the
circle of life in the boreal forest by paying
closer attention to the rich re-growth in
the wake of a recent forest fire.
Indulge your sense of adventure but
remember to treat the area with respect.
Soak it all in allowing your mind, body and
spirit to be rejuvenated as far too soon
the journey will end and you will draw
upon your memories to sustain you until
your next visit.
RED LAKE
AIRPORT
The Red Lake Airport is a vital air transportation link
for the Northwestern Ontario region. It is specifically
vital for the transportation of goods and passengers
along with providing airport facilities for itinerant
aircraft servicing the Northern Communities of the
Norseman Festival July 21-23, 2017
Mark your calendars and plan a trip to
the beautiful Red Lake District to join us
in celebrating Canada’s 150 Anniversary
and 25 years of the Norseman Floatplane
Festival!
Red Lake is proud to be known as the
Norseman Capital of the World. The
title shows respect for the Noorduyn
Norseman, the “Original Canadian
Bushplane”. This vintage aircraft was the
first designed for flying in Canada’s north
and included many “firsts” in airplane
design. Over the last four decades, there
have been more Norsemen flying in the
Red Lake District than anywhere else;
currently six are located in Red Lake.
One of these is CF-DRD, displayed on
a pedestal in Norseman Heritage Park,
centrally located in Red Lake. The other
five are fully-operational and can be seen
operating out of Howey Bay during the
summer months.
Every July, Red Lake hosts the Norseman
Floatplane Festival. Traditionally, this
festival attracts aviation enthusiasts
from around the world and introduces
newcomers to the exciting and
adventurous world of float plane flying.
This 3-day festival is a combination of a
good old fashioned family fun festival
and an airshow, a combination that is
guaranteed to provide enjoyment for all
ages.
In 2017, Norseman Festival is planning to
provide a combination of our old favorites
and the addition of more new and exciting
activities. Building on the great success
of 2016, this year’s festival is sure to be a
crowd pleaser.
In Red Lake, aviation remains a
fundamental part of the local economy.
With several commercial airlines operating
out of Howey Bay, visitors are certain to
see Norseman, Beaver, Otter, Cessna and
a variety of other float aircrafts. These
aircrafts today are largely used for tourism
carrying anglers, canoeists and hunters to
remote lodges and outposts. Numerous
area residents also own and fly their own
aircraft for recreational purposes.
sustainable value – long-term social and economic benefits that do
not leave a legacy of dependence. Our approach is multifaceted,
embedded in our new CSR strategy, and incorporates: local hiring
and procurement initiatives, including training and capacity
building; direct community contributions through donations and
investments; and infrastructure investment. We also contribute
through the payment of taxes and royalties to various levels of
government in the communities and regions where we operate.
Some of Red Lake’s Community Relations contributions include:
• Formal Collaboration Agreements with Wabauskang and
Lac Seul First Nations provide a framework that strengthens
collaboration in the development and operation of Red Lake
Gold Mines.
• Goldcorp donated $5 million to the Municipality of Red Lake
towards the construction of a new Red Lake Medical Clinic,
opened in 2015. This new facility is paramount to the attraction
and retention of medical professionals to the Red Lake area,
to better serve over 5,000 residents including those from
surrounding communities.
• Goldcorp contributed $3 million towards developing a 54 lot
residential subdivision that is currently being transferred to the
Municipality of Red Lake.
• In 2014, Goldcorp committed $605,000 over two years to the
Heart and Stroke Foundation to support stroke awareness,
professional development, and Telestroke preparedness and
integration activities, focused on our Canadian operations,
including Red Lake and its surrounding communities.
• A variety of donations and sponsorships to local organizations
including the Red Lake Margaret Cochenour Hospital
Foundation, Red Lake Area Emergency Shelter, Wilderness
Entertainment Series, Colours of Hope Run for Cancer,
Norseman Day Festival, district schools’ and community sports,
and English River Miners hockey team to name a few.
• Red Lake Gold Mines supported the Red Lake Scout Group’s
fourth annual tree planting event on the mine’s property to
promote and educate local youth about rehabilitation. The
company’s environmental vision of Our Planet, Our Choices,
Our Legacy, outlines our belief that we each have a part to play
in maintaining the environment.
Red Lake Gold Mines also contributes to a number of programs and
events aimed at supporting youth in Red Lake and its surrounding
communities. Examples of this include the Mining Matters Mining
Rocks Earth Science Program - an exciting educational experience
tailored to the unique needs of the community. In 2016, Red
Lake Gold Mines also hosted a one-week Mining Rocks Program
aimed at educating elementary school students, teachers and
community members about the mining cycle, rocks, minerals and
many aspects of mining including rehabilitation.
