WE’RE “IN BUSINESS” HERE IN MOKENA… 

Location and partnerships equate to a 

good business climate, and Mokena has an 

abundance of both. Ideally situated just 

south of the Cook County line between 

Interstate 80, LaGrange Road, and U.S. 

Route 30 in Will County, our residents 

and businesses enjoy a multitude of 

convenient transportation options 

including interstate highways, commuter 

rail service, and two major airports within an hour’s drive. 

Interstate 80, which forms the northern border of Mokena, 

provides easy access to I-355, I-55, I-57, and I-294, and 

Mokena is also home to two commuter rail stations on the 

Rock Island District line offering quick access to the Chicago 

loop via Metra’s LaSalle Street station. 

Partnerships with local businesses and the Mokena Chamber 

of Commerce have been integral to growing our economy, 

which supports almost 850 businesses, including family-owned 

notables such as Ozinga Concrete and Schilling Lumber. National 

and regional retailers such as Meijer and JCPenney have also 

located here over the past several years. Recent developments 

drawing visitors in from outside our community include 

Accelerate Indoor Speedway, Women’s Health of Illinois, Heart 

Care Centers of Illinois, and a Holiday Inn Express, all easily 

accessible off I-80. Interest in downtown Mokena continues 

to grow, with Curtain Call Theatre setting the stage for the 

area’s future progress as an entertainment, dining, and cultural 

hub. Our future is bright, and the Village Board and I stand

excellent education from top-notch K-8 schools. Mokena 

School District 159, Frankfort School District 157C, New 

Lenox School District 122, and Summit Hill School District 

161, along with St. Mary School and Noonan Academy, are 

all options within Mokena’s boundaries. These schools 

consistently meet or exceed State education standards and 

feed into Lincoln-Way Community High School District 210. 

Ranked academically in the upper 10% of their Illinois peers,

Fire protection 

district 

Mokena Fire Department was organized in 1917 

with approximately 30 members. When the fire alarm 

sounded, the Volunteer Firefighters answered the call with the 

following equipment: 300 feet of 3/4 inch hose mounted on a 

wooden hose cart which was pulled by the Firefighters, 6 rubber 

buckets, 2 red flags, 2 red lights, and 4 white lights. This hose 

cart is still in existence today and proudly displayed at Mokena 

Fire Protection District Station #1 

In the fall of 1932, representatives of the W. S. Darley Company, 

manufacturers of firefighting equipment, held a demonstration 

of the fire apparatus mounted on a Ford chassis. The fire truck 

was connected to the fire plug in front of the Mokena Hardware 

Company and went through a series of hose demonstrations. 

The water was pumped directly from the water main and the 

various types of hoses were able to throw quite 

powerful streams of water. At the time, the Village 

Board was not in a position to purchase this type 

of firefighting equipment, so it became necessary 

to plan on acquiring this firefighting equipment by 

public subscription, as had been done in so many 

neighboring Villages. At the time, Mokena was in 

dire need of an organized Fire Department and 

some type of modern firefighting equipment. 

In November 1932, the matter of reorganizing the 

Mokena Volunteer Fire Department was taken up at the regular 

meeting of the Mokena Village Council. When the Department 

was founded, it had eight members. It was decided to reorganize 

a Fire Department with 25 Firefighters and all the Village Board 

members agreed to enroll as members. 

In December 1932, a list of 25 names, who were willing to serve 

in the newly reorganized Mokena Volunteer Fire Department 

was approved by the Village Board. On December 15, 1932, the 

Mokena Volunteer Fire Department was formally organized with 

25 active members. 

Early in 1933, a used 1929 Model “A” Ford chassis, previously used 

as a coal truck, was purchased for $75.00. On July 4, 1933, the 

Mokena Volunteer Fire Department sponsored a fire truck benefit 

dance at the Mokena Men’s Club pavilion, located on Wolf Road, 

to raise funds to outfit the truck with the necessary firefighting 

equipment. By July 15, 1933, the Mokena Village fire truck was 

complete with chemicals and a pump, the latter being purchased by 

the Village at a cost of $373.00. The remaining cost of the truck, 

totaling $650.00, was paid for by the Firefighters and the truck 

was donated by them to the Village. The members of the Fire 

Department also purchased additional parts and assembled the 

truck at no expense to the Village. At this time, the truck carried 

approximately 1,200 feet of hose, and with the chemicals newly 

acquired, small oil fires and attic fires could be quickly extinguished 

without using the regular fire hose. This Model “A” Ford truck is still 

used to this day in Mokena’s annual 4th of July parade. 

Plans were laid for a Fire Protection District supported by 

taxation so the Firefighters could better serve the community 

and not have to devote so much time raising money to keep the 

Fire Department solvent. It should be noted that the Mokena 

Community Volunteer Fire Department was the only Fire 

District application filed in Northern Illinois that was entirely 

debt free. All equipment, building, and supplies were paid for so 

the District’s application met no opposition. 

On July 19, 1962, an election was held, and the 

creation of the District was passed almost 

unanimously. 

For a long period of time, rescue work and first aid was the subject 

of much discussion in the Fire District and in the local press. The 

question of Fire District owned and operated ambulances versus 

utilizing the services of local and nearby ambulance operators 

was under constant pressure to be resolved. In November 1985, a 

referendum to create an Ambulance District was defeated; another 

referendum was presented in November 1988 and passed. 

Today, the Mokena Fire Protection District (MFPD) employs 34 

Full-Time Firefighter/Paramedics, 2 Full-Time Administrative 

Assistants, and one paid-on-call Firefighter. The Mokena Fire 

Protection District serves portions of Frankfort, Homer Glen, 

Mokena and Orland Park with a population of approximately 

17,500 people over 12 ½ square miles. The MFPD has one ladder 

truck, three engines, one heavy rescue squad, four Advanced 

Life Support (ALS) ambulances, and one brush truck. The MFPD 

responds to approximately 2,600 calls a year and this number 

continues to rapidly rise. The MFPD was awarded accredited 

agency status by the Center for Public Safety Excellence in August 

of 2001. As an internationally accredited agency, the MFPD 

believes in continuous quality improvement which is based on our 

core values of Professionalism, Responsibility, Integrity, Devotion 

and Effectiveness (PRIDE). We are proud to be classified as a Class 

One Fire Department by the Insurance Services Office (ISO). 

The MFPD will be celebrating its 100 years of service to the 

community (1917 - 2017) in 2017. The main event of the 100 

years of service celebration will be focused around the 4th of July 

Parade. The MFPD is planning a community based celebration 

with Fire Trucks on display, 100 year commemorative teeshirts 

(for purchase), food vendors, and other activities for 

the community to participate in and support. Please visit www.

The MFPD has enjoyed our first 100 years of service to the 

community and we look forward to the next 100 years of service 

and progress. 


The Mokena Community Public Library District 

has recently added a variety of new programs.

Mister Matt and his Science Chat 

Our new STEAM program reveals the science of everyday things 

in hands on learning environment. This program is for children 

in grades 3-8. Children in grades K-2 are welcome with parental 

guidance only. 

Yoga for Kids 

Toddlers will practice fun animal yoga poses and also engage in 

activities, read a storybook, and more. Classes are geared for 

ages 6 months to 3 years and every child must be accompanied 

by an adult and adults are required to participate with their child.

Access to first-class education at all levels is 

a significant draw for families and employers 

interested in relocating to Mokena. 

There are numerous early childhood education and daycare 

centers that cater to working parents and provide a great 

learning base for children. The majority of students entering 

primary school attend Mokena School District 159, while 

Frankfort School District 157-C, New Lenox School District 

122 and Summit Hill School District 161 serve small portions of 

Mokena. All three primary school districts feed into Lincoln-Way 

Community High School District 210. There are also alternatives 

to the K-8 public school options in the Mokena area. Locally, 

students enroll at St. Mary’s Catholic School and the Noonan 

Elementary Academy. The local alternative to the public high 

school program is Providence Catholic High School. 

Graduating high school seniors and adults looking to enhance their 

skill sets are afforded a number of higher learning opportunities 

in the southwest suburbs. Within 20 miles of Mokena, residents 

have access to several colleges, universities and technical schools, 

including the Rasmussen College’s Mokena-Tinley Park campus, 

ITT Technical Institute, Moraine Valley Community College, 

Governors State University, Lewis University, the University of St. 

Francis, Prairie State College and South Suburban College. 

Get Fit Where You Sit 

This is a chair yoga class for people 55 years and older. Chair yoga 

is “Yoga for EveryBody.” If you have trouble getting down to the 

mat, sit at a desk all day, or just want to deepen your practice, 

chair yoga is for you. If you can breathe, you can do chair yoga. 

You will be guided through an hour long practice where you’ll 

learn several ways to practice yoga while seated at your desk, 

standing by your chair or traveling. 

Career Online High School 

Scholarships are being offered to qualified adults to earn an 

accredited high school diploma and career certificate. Applicants 

must be at least 20 years of age, have completed 8th grade and 

have Mokena Community Public Library District card in good 

standing. 

Virtual Reality 

The library’s new Virtual Reality Station allows patrons to 

experience cutting edge virtual technology. Reserve your time 

and experience virtual entertainment, gaming, and learning 

opportunities that make you feel like you are a part of the action.

The Mokena Community Park District is the 

area’s leading recreational resource. 

It maintains more than 23 parks and facilities in the area, 

including the Yunker Farm, The Oaks Recreation & Fitness 

Center, the PDGA-certified 27 hole Oaks Disc Golf Course, 

a Program Center devoted exclusively to recreational and 

early education programming, , and a Skatepark. In addition, 

construction is expected to be completed this year on 

improvements to the Yunker Park, including a band shell, splash 

pad, dog park, community gardens, and additional parking. 

Across the street, we are opening a Field House addition to the 

Oaks Recreation & Fitness Center. 

The programming afforded through the Mokena Community 

Park District is just as impressive as its parks and facilities. 

Throughout the year, residents of all ages, interests, and 

abilities participate in more than 300 programs and activities, 

ranging from arts and crafts classes and athletics, to summer 

camps and dance classes for all ages and genres, as well as a 

comprehensive selection of health and wellness programs. The 

Park District also hosts many community wide events, notably 

Free Concerts and Movies in the Park, Summertime Stride 5K 

Run/Walk, several outdoor and one indoor Flea Markets, Farm 

& Barn Fest, Halloween Hollow, Stockings For Our Troops, 

Woofstock – A Bark in the Park, Senior Spelling Bee, NFL Punt 

Pass and Kick Competition, and more. 

The Mokena Park District is also a proud partner with many 

community organizations, providing space for the Mokena 

Chamber of Commerce Community Business Expo & Health 

Fair, Mokena Chamber Food, Wine, and Brew Fest, and staging 

for the Fourth of July Parade, as well as the Mokena Lions Club 

Annual Easter Egg Hunt. Mokena Community Park District 

is affiliated with and provides playing fields for the Mokena 

Baseball Softball Association and the Mokena Burros, as well 

as hosting a number of youth and adult baseball and softball 

tournaments.

To find the heart of a community, one must 

turn to its past. 

For centuries, the land upon which Mokena now stands was 

home to different bands of Native Americans, the Potawatomis 

and their wigwams having been documented near Hickory Creek 

in the early 19th century. The young family of John McGovney 

were the first brave pioneers to settle the neighborhood, the 

Ohioans having arrived in 1831. Their tough frontier life was soon 

interrupted by the Black Hawk War, which sent them temporarily 

fleeing to more densely settled parts. They returned in 1834 and 

soon found new neighbors in John Atkins of Vermont and Allen 

Denny of New York. With others, they broke the untamed prairie 

where Mokena would later prosper. 

With the construction of the Chicago, Rock 

Island and Pacific Railroad in 1852, Allen Denny 

subdivided several lots near Wolf Road along 

today’s Front and First Streets. 

To his small development he assigned the name Mokena, 

marking the first recorded usage of the name. Many theories 

have abounded as to what the rustic word could mean, 

although modern research indicates that it signifies “turtle” in 

the Algonquin tongue. Not long thereafter, John McGovney 

completed an addition to Denny’s subdivision. These first steps, 

along with the establishment of a post office in the winter of 

1853, heralded the birth of our community. A stop along the 

railroad brought commerce; early business houses were an inn, 

a general store and a blacksmith shop. A schoolhouse was built in 

1855. At this early time, the majority of Mokena residents were 

of Germanic heritage. 

The carnage of the Civil War years awakened the 

young settlement’s spirituality. 

The German United Evangelical St. John’s Church was founded 

in 1862, followed by St. Mary’s German Catholic Church in 1864. 

Shortly after the war’s end, the Methodists constructed a church 

building in 1867. All three of these congregations have withstood 

the test of time, remaining an integral part of Mokena to this day. 

By 1878, around 600 people lived in the little burg, which was 

known throughout Will County as a shipping and trading center 

for grain. In June 1880 Mokena was successfully incorporated by 

referendum vote. Having been elected by the town’s male voters, 

the newly formed village board selected Ozias McGovney as 

their first mayor. One of the board’s first acts was licensing of the 

numerous saloons that abounded in the village. 

Mokena enjoyed heady days until a sharp decline 

struck at the end of the 19th century. 

Economic hardship due to the nationwide Panic of 1893, bad 

roads, and increased rail traffic to other nearby locales lead many 

residents and business to relocate. During the lowest ebb, the 

village counted a meager 281 inhabitants in 1900. The village 

experienced a slow but gradual comeback, marked first by the 

establishment of the Bowman Dairy’s milk bottling plant in 1907, 

and the opening of the Mokena State Bank in 1909. Gleaming 

electricity was first introduced to the town in 1913.

The concreting of Wolf Road began in 1930 and 

finally ended in 1936, the long gap being due to a 

particularly intense property dispute. 

The champion of this much-needed civic improvement was 

William Semmler, a tireless Mokena booster as well as the editor 

of The News-Bulletin, the community’s trustworthy newspaper. 

Founded by Semmler in 1919, the publication existed until 1969. 

The small town weathered the Great Depression quite well, 

and overcame the desperate years of World War II through the 

bravery of at least 125 local heroes, who were bolstered by the 

sturdiness of Mokenians at home. 

A rich agricultural tradition characterized 

the life of Mokena from it’s earliest days until 

relatively recently. 

In the years after World War II, the village changed from a rural 

farm town to a suburb of Chicago. The subdivisions of Mineral 

Springs and Sunny Acres attracted newcomers in the first years 

after the war, while the opening of Interstate 80 in 1968 just 

north of Mokena simplified transportation to points farther 

afield. At the end of the 20th century, the community experienced 

a boom. In 1990, slightly more than 6,000 people lived within the 

incorporated limits, and in 2000, the population had more than 

doubled, counting approximately 14,000 residents. The 1990s 

also registered 23 housing developments, a number previously 

unseen in local history. The reputation for great living and 

friendly locals is still carried on in the 21st century. Mokena is not 

simply another village, but also a home.

We all know menopause is the conclusion of menstruation and 

includes side effects such as hot flashes and changes in mood.
