Jak se Vám natá�elo s francouzským kameramanem?<br />
Legra�ní je, že nemluvíme tím samým jazykem. On mluví špan�lsky<br />
a francouzsky, ale ne anglicky. Dorozumívali jsme se tedy francouzsky.<br />
On p�edstíral, že mi rozumí, a pak ud�lal, co mu �íkalo jeho<br />
srdce.<br />
V Praze chystáte na ja�e ješt� jeden projekt, tentokrát divadelní. Jedná<br />
se o jazzovou operu Suchého a Šlitra, Dob�e utajená procházka,<br />
která bude mít v dubnu premiéru v Národním divadle. Ve stejném<br />
divadle, kde p�ed pár lety zamítli Vaši režii opery Dalibor. Pro� jste<br />
s touto nabídkou souhlasil?<br />
To víte – Zlatá kapli�ka, Národní divadlo, to �lov�k ne�ekne ne. <<br />

Why did you choose Natalie Portman to<br />
play Goya’s muse?<br />
At first we didn’t know Natalie Portman at<br />
all. I bought a copy of Vogue or some other<br />
fashion magazine, and as I was reading,<br />
I noticed the photograph of a woman on<br />
the front cover, which turned out to be Natalie.<br />
And, looking at her, I opened a book<br />
of Goya’s paintings and found a picture<br />
called The Milkmaid of Bordeaux. I realised<br />
that they had the same face. So I began<br />
to check out what sort of actress she was<br />
and how popular she was. Then I saw the<br />
film Closer, and seeing how good she was,<br />
I knew that I wanted her for the role. Her<br />
range is incredible, huge and surprising,<br />
which was very important. In the film she basically plays three characters.<br />
How did you find working with a French cameraman?<br />
It was strange that we didn’t speak a common language. He speaks<br />
Spanish and French but no English. So we communicated in French. He<br />
pretended that he understood me and then did what his heart dictated.<br />
You are also working on another project in Prague this spring, this<br />
time in the theatre. It’s a jazz opera by Suchý and Šlitr called A Secret<br />
Walk, which will be premiered at the National Theatre in April. The<br />
same theatre that a few years ago rejected your o�er to direct the<br />
opera Dalibor. Why did you take up this o�er?<br />
You know, it’s the National Theatre. You just can’t refuse. <<br />
