Chrám sv. Barbory / The Cathedral of St. Barbora
chrám horníků
Svatá Barbora, patronka horník�, má v Kutné Ho�e sv�j chrám, který se
stal doslova dominantou m�sta. Finální podobu jí vtiskl stavitel Matyáš
Rejsek, který má v Praze na sv�domí Prašnou bránu. Po jeho smrti
dokon�il stavbu stavitel Pražského hradu Benedikt Rejt a s Pražským
hradem má stavba nemálo spole�ného, protože svou dominantou p�ipomíná
chrám sv. Víta. Zajímavostí chrámu svaté Barbory jsou fresky,
na kterých najdeme vedle náboženských motiv� i pracovní témata
inspirovaná dolováním �i ražbou mincí. Nejznám�jší kaplí svatobarborského
chrámu je Smíškovská kaple, kterou nechal vybudovat bohatý
Michal Smíšek z Vrchoviš�, který je v kapli i pochován. Zajímavá jsou
také chrámová okna. Jedno z nich je dodnes upomínkou návšt�vy
Františka Josefa I. v Kutné Ho�e v roce 1906.

the miners’ cathedral
The cathedral in Kutná Hora, dedicated to Saint Barbora, the patron saint
of miners, has come to dominate the town. The architect Matyáš Rejsek,
who built Prague’s Powder Tower, gave the building its final appearance.
When he died, the work was completed by the architect who worked on
Prague Castle, Benedikt Rejt. The cathedral has much in common with
Prague Castle, as in many ways it resembles the Cathedral of St Vitus. An
interesting feature of the Cathedral of St Barbora are frescoes which depict
mining and the minting of coins alongside religious motifs. The best known
chapel within the cathedral is the Smíškov Chapel, which the wealthy
Michal Smíšek of Vrchovišt� had built and which contains his grave. The
windows of the cathedral are also of interest. One of them reminds us of the
visit of Austrian Emperor Franz Josef I to Kutná Hora in 1906.

Do you like a good scare? If you do,
then you should definitely not miss
the Ossuary, a cemetery chapel
belonging to the former monastery
in Sedlec. It is said that the bones
of 40,000 people were used to
decorate the interior! Here you will
find a huge chandelier, a cross and
chalices made entirely out of bones.

was probably a local sculptor by the
