Formanovy
a výrazných postavách, pipomínajících nejen díky kostýmm a výprav
režisérova oscarového Amadea. I zde se setkáme se dvma výraznými
a protikladnými postoji k životu: s bratrem Lorenzem (Javier Bardem)
a malíem Goyou (Stellan Skarsgård).
myšlenkami francouzské revoluce a zcela obrátí.
kritika souasnosti.
This latest film by possibly the best known Czech director, Miloš Forman,
called Goya’s Ghosts, is not a faithful depiction of the life of Spanish painter,
Francisco Goya as it would seem at first glance. It is more a snapshot
of a period at the turn of the 18th and 19th century in Spain, when people
changed their allegiances and opinions on a daily basis. Only an artist
of Goya’s greatness could observe and document in pictures what was
happening from afar.
Goya in the background
The film is typical for Forman in having a strong storyline, emotions and
characters, reminiscent of Forman’s Oscar winning film Amadeus, and
not only thanks to the costumes and production. In the film we meet two
strongly opposing approaches to life in the characters of brother Lorenzo
(Javier Bardem) and Goya (Stellan Skarsgård). While Goya keeps his
dignity and remains distant from the historical events happening around
him, Lorenzo always leans towards those who happen to be in power
at the given moment. At first this is the Inquisition, but then, when
Napoleon invades Spain, he becomes an ardent proponent of the ideals
of the French Revolution. However, he pays for his fickleness when the
Spanish monarchy is reinstated.
the irony of history
What fascinated Forman in this period was the irony of history. It reminded
him of the period through which he lived. Some scenes, especially
the imprisonment of innocent people, are meant to remind audiences of
political prisoners during the communist era here, and the link between
the regime and the inquisition is quite obvious. When the situation
swings the other way, the government changes but life remains the
same. This is Forman’s veiled criticism of the present-day situation in this
country. The character of Goya represents the artist in uncertain times,
perhaps in some ways Forman’s alter ego representing his own fate.
