Latin American Women- Striking and fighting for abortion and an end to violence

Women in Latin America are seen fighting for themselves as they believe that no
one else will do so. The fight is been going since more than a decade. The
phrase-‘Not One Women Less, Not One More Death’ was borrowed by protestors
in Argentina previous year fighting for abortion and violence against women. This
movement spread like wildfire all over Latin America. On 19 th October, 2016, the
first women’s strike was being held in Argentina, followed by Mexico and Bolivia.
The strike was backed in protests in several other countries in the region including
Peru and Chile. That day around 80,000 people took the streets of Santiago
proclaiming- ‘Not One Less’.
Current status of women fighting for abortion:
In countries like Latin America where there is a strong Catholic root, anything
regarding feminism is still seen as violent, wrong, and bad. Women in these
countries are trying hard to transform this in positive message. Their aim is to
create awareness and to promote a cultural change. Chile being a conservative
country takes a lot for women to speak out. Females are fighting to have the right
to control their own bodies, to persuade the procedure of abortion legally with
the help of safe abortion pills.
On October 19 th the focus was on feminicide, violence against women and free
abortion. Some believe that countries in Latin America cannot follow the U.S. or
Europe for now because Latin American women do not have some basic rights
yet. Women on that day were noticed wearing black, supporting even those who
had not attended the protest rallies. Black was the dress code of that day which
was put in to mourn the victims of feminicides. Along with that some banners
were hung on the windows by some females. Of the 25 countries with the highest
rates on feminicides, 14 are in Latin America and Caribbean, as reported by the
UN in April 2016. Women over there are working hard to make the availability of
abortion pill online and in pharmacies legally.
Politics of abortion in Latin America:
As both activists and scholars know by now, similar to other human rights,
women’s rights are only respected if a movement systematizes around them and

puts pressure on the state to change unfair laws and policies. Despite the fact
that, feminist movements wiped Europe and North America during the 1960s and
1970s, countries like Latin America were busy fighting dictatorship and civil wars.
When democracy finally arrived in the region in the 1980s in South American and
the 1990s in Central American, the women’s liberation steadily began to push for
reproductive rights. For instance, on 28 th September 1990, action for Access to
Safe and Legal Abortion was launched. Since then, most countries in the region
have seen assemblage and protests around this date. Nevertheless, by the time
the movements began to focus on reproductive rights, the worldwide context had
changed and the orthodox right had also set up a strong disagreement to any
change to the status quo.
