<strong>Women</strong> in <strong>Latin</strong> America are seen <strong>fighting</strong> <strong>for</strong> themselves as they believe that no<br />

one else will do so. The fight is been going since more th<strong>an</strong> a decade. The<br />

phrase-‘Not One <strong>Women</strong> Less, Not One More Death’ was borrowed by protes<strong>to</strong>rs<br />

in Argentina previous year <strong>fighting</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>abortion</strong> <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> <strong>violence</strong> against women. This<br />

movement spread like wildfire all over <strong>Latin</strong> America. On 19 th Oc<strong>to</strong>ber, 2016, the<br />

first women’s strike was being held in Argentina, followed by Mexico <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> Bolivia.<br />

The strike was backed in protests in several other countries in the region including<br />

Peru <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> Chile. That day around 80,000 people <strong>to</strong>ok the streets of S<strong>an</strong>tiago<br />

proclaiming- ‘Not One Less’.<br />

Current status of women <strong>fighting</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>abortion</strong>:<br />

In countries like <strong>Latin</strong> America where there is a strong Catholic root, <strong>an</strong>ything<br />

regarding feminism is still seen as violent, wrong, <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> bad. <strong>Women</strong> in these<br />

countries are trying hard <strong>to</strong> tr<strong>an</strong>s<strong>for</strong>m this in positive message. Their aim is <strong>to</strong><br />

create awareness <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> <strong>to</strong> promote a cultural ch<strong>an</strong>ge. Chile being a conservative<br />

country takes a lot <strong>for</strong> women <strong>to</strong> speak out. Females are <strong>fighting</strong> <strong>to</strong> have the right<br />

<strong>to</strong> control their own bodies, <strong>to</strong> persuade the procedure of <strong>abortion</strong> legally with<br />

the help of safe <strong>abortion</strong> pills.<br />

On Oc<strong>to</strong>ber 19 th the focus was on feminicide, <strong>violence</strong> against women <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> free<br />

<strong>abortion</strong>. Some believe that countries in <strong>Latin</strong> America c<strong>an</strong>not follow the U.S. or<br />

Europe <strong>for</strong> now because <strong>Latin</strong> <strong>Americ<strong>an</strong></strong> women do not have some basic rights<br />

yet. <strong>Women</strong> on that day were noticed wearing black, supporting even those who<br />

had not att<strong>end</strong>ed the protest rallies. Black was the dress code of that day which<br />

was put in <strong>to</strong> mourn the victims of feminicides. Along with that some b<strong>an</strong>ners<br />

were hung on the windows by some females. Of the 25 countries with the highest<br />

rates on feminicides, 14 are in <strong>Latin</strong> America <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> Caribbe<strong>an</strong>, as reported by the<br />

UN in April 2016. <strong>Women</strong> over there are working hard <strong>to</strong> make the availability of<br />

<strong>abortion</strong> pill online <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> in pharmacies legally.<br />

Politics of <strong>abortion</strong> in <strong>Latin</strong> America:<br />

As both activists <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> scholars know by now, similar <strong>to</strong> other hum<strong>an</strong> rights,<br />

women’s rights are only respected if a movement systematizes around them <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong>

puts pressure on the state <strong>to</strong> ch<strong>an</strong>ge unfair laws <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> policies. Despite the fact<br />

that, feminist movements wiped Europe <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> North America during the 1960s <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong><br />

1970s, countries like <strong>Latin</strong> America were busy <strong>fighting</strong> dicta<strong>to</strong>rship <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> civil wars.<br />

When democracy finally arrived in the region in the 1980s in South <strong>Americ<strong>an</strong></strong> <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong><br />

the 1990s in Central <strong>Americ<strong>an</strong></strong>, the women’s liberation steadily beg<strong>an</strong> <strong>to</strong> push <strong>for</strong><br />

reproductive rights. For inst<strong>an</strong>ce, on 28 th September 1990, action <strong>for</strong> Access <strong>to</strong><br />

Safe <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> Legal Abortion was launched. Since then, most countries in the region<br />

have seen assemblage <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> protests around this date. Nevertheless, by the time<br />

the movements beg<strong>an</strong> <strong>to</strong> focus on reproductive rights, the worldwide context had<br />

ch<strong>an</strong>ged <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> the orthodox right had also set up a strong disagreement <strong>to</strong> <strong>an</strong>y<br />

ch<strong>an</strong>ge <strong>to</strong> the status quo.<br />
