WHAT IS ON THE HORIZON THIS YEAR? 

I asked my trusty Magic Eight Ball if 2017 was 

going to bring more progress to Jacksonville’s 

urban core. Her prophetic response: “Ask again 

later.” My response: “No Way.” We have been 

playing the later game long enough in this city, 

so I gave her another shake. She came through 

with, “Outlook good.” 

There are many projects on the horizon in our city. Some are in the works and 

some are still simmering in development. Some are still daydreams. Some are 

startups that just hit the ground running last year and need our support. All 

began with the idea that our city is a smart place to start something new. 

Jacksonville gets a lot of flak for not having a solid identity, but I think that just 

gives us a clean slate to work with. What is Jacksonville to you? I am not talking 

about what Jacksonville has been in the past, but how would you define this city 

today? I asked my team here at the office to describe the city in three words.

OF THE MAKERSPACE 

A chat with local artist advocate Shawana Brooks

I won a golden ticket to tap Shawana Brooks’s otherworldly mind, best described as a whimsical idea factory. She is passion personified. 

According to cliché, artists need muses. In Shawana, they have a fighter, or as artist Overstreet Ducasse has said, a muisance. She sweetly tells 

it how it is with tang. As Arts and Culture Developer of the downtown Jacksonville Public Library’s Jax Makerspace, she spends her day working 

to provide access to tools and opportunities to anyone who wants to create. We asked her to share her thoughts on the Jax Makerspace, what 

challenges local artists face and tips for creating a personal style that screams mother-earth-meets-futuristic-fly. 

jack: What do you love about our local 

artist community? 

Shawana Brooks: It’s evolving! 

Jacksonville has changed so much in the last 

five years, since my husband and I returned 

from Savannah. Our artists have always 

pushed themselves, loud and proud. They 

create on-par with some of the greatest. 

Eyes will soon turn to us. 

jack: What are some of the challenges 

local artists face? 

SB: They truly lack advocacy, resources, 

gallery systems and agents. Jacksonville 

must invest in its artists, because ‘exposure’ 

[offering publicity as a form of payment] 

doesn’t put gas in the tank. We don’t 

expect other businesses to operate that 

way. When we invest in artists, their profits 

cycle within the city we love. 

jack: What is Makerspace? 

SB: The Jacksonville Public Library 

Makerspace is a place to create everything 

from movies to music, visual art 

to apps, robots to radios and novels to 

needlepoint. Whether you are a novice, 

expert, student, hobbyist, inventor, 

entrepreneur or artist, it’s a place 

for hands-on opportunities to explore, 

collaborate and create. Visit and you’ll 

be surprised at all we offer. As the 

Art and Culture Developer for the Jax 

Makerspace, I want to place-mark our 

library as a premier cultural institution. 

We’re simply waiting for the community 

to come downtown to take full advantage 

of its resources. 

jack: Speaking of art, your makeup is 

on point. Secrets? 

SB: I spent 14 years working for MAC as a 

makeup artist. This was before the YouTube 

tutorial invasion, so the secret is this: If you 

want to master an art form, it takes time 

and practice. 

jack: Your personal style shouts glory! 

Where do you shop? 

SB: I stalk the clothes I treasure! Vintagemeets-modern 

speaks to my eclecticism, 

which is how I express my personality. 

Looking like a million bucks doesn’t mean 

spending it. Locally, I love Ashley Tamarra 

of Love Doll Shoppe, which is based out 

of Jacksonville at lovedollshoppe.com. 

She doesn’t have a storefront, but we have 

Vagabond Flea Market, in Murray Hill, 

where she often pops up. I also love Wolf & 

Cub on Laura Street.

There are few people in the city more passionate about improving and promoting the urban core culture 

than Jacksonville native Mike Field.

Fascinated by Downtown’s “bigcity” 

vibe since he was a kid, 

Field has channeled his passion 

into award-winning urban 

core projects like Jax Truckies, 

Jaxson’s Night Market and 

Front Porch at Art Walk. His latest project, 

moderncities.com, is a resource that 

explores the underlying mechanics that 

have propelled the resurgence of the 

American city. While he’s not a psychic 

nor does he possess a crystal ball (or 

at least he didn’t bring one to the interview), 

Field shared his visions for 2017. 

The challenge with building up the 

urban core, he says, is the same one 

that affects the city as a whole: It’s too 

spread out.

helped revitalize the area. 

“There are isolated pockets of activities 

[throughout the Core], but nothing connecting 

them to each other.” In Riverside, 

for example, the King Street District has 

become a bustling strip of restaurants, 

bars and clubs but still remains disconnected 

to 5 Points. And then there’s 

Brooklyn, which isn’t linked to either of 

its adjacent neighborhoods: Riverside or 

Downtown. 

The Hogans Creek Greenway project 

with construction underway will provide 

a much needed bike and pedestrian pathway 

from Springfield to Downtown, and 

only time will tell if the proposed modernization 

and expansion of the Skyway 

will come to fruition making our cultural 

pockets more accessible. 

Building up the “peripheral areas” surrounding 

Downtown, Field says, will help 

direct traffic to Downtown — instead of 

the other way around — while filling the 

gaps between the popular but disjointed 

districts. He suggests developers, business 

owners and event organizers should focus 

on the off-the-beaten-path tracts of our 

urban core. 

“Pick a four-block stretch and make it 

really good,” he says, suggesting the addition 

of new restaurants, bars and nightlife 

venues. “People will travel to try a new 

restaurant or bar, not for another retail 

store to buy a greeting card.” 

As for his predictions as to what is on 

the horizon, Field says: “Follow the infrastructure.”

Intuition Ale Works is 

driving momentum in 

transforming the area near 

the stadium. 

Brooklyn will continue to evolve with 

the city’s rezoning of Park Street north 

of the I-95 overpass. What is currently a 

mostly industrial area with a handful of 

restaurants and retail is poised to become 

a vibrant corridor of activity connecting 5 

Points with Downtown. Artists are moving 

into the Mixon Town warehouse district 

and Peterbrooke Chocolatier has made the 

neighborhood its new headquarters. 

The Doro District, which includes 

Intuition Ale Works, the sports complex 

and Daily’s Place amphitheater (currently 

under construction), will get a much-needed 

boost with the removal of a little-used 

off-ramp of the Hart Bridge. The construction 

project will also stimulate opportunities 

for additional development along the 

St. Johns River in this area. 

“North San Marco” around Hendricks 

and Kings Avenues (think bb’s, Bearded 

Pig, Aardwolf Brewery, V Pizza) will benefit 

from direct highway access via the I-95 

Overland Bridge replacement (expected 

completion summer 2017). 

Field also sees opportunities for 

growth on Adams Street east and west 

of Main Street. Plans for opening a 

restaurant operated by FSCJ’s Culinary 

Arts program on Adams are already 

underway, as are a number of other 

yet-unnamed projects. 

“So much [of the Urban Core] is blank 

canvas,” Field says. “And we have so 

many opportunities to make it a destination.” 

The real question is how to make these 

new developments inclusive to the current 

residents living in the undeveloped areas 

of the urban core, while creating a vibrant 

city center. Field says that the mayoral 

administration seems focused on studying 

infrastructure needs of these outlying 

pockets and remedying them. This is a 

step in the right direction. 

“Over the last four decades, much of 

the commercial fabric that defined these 

neighborhoods [Murray Hill, Brooklyn, 

Doro District, Durkeeville and Springfield 

in particular] has been torn apart,” Field 

says. “I think it’s the city’s job to ensure 

that the proper infrastructure is in place 

for entrepreneurship to thrive in commercial 

areas that serve the residents of 

these unique urban neighborhoods, while 

also recognizing and appreciating the 

historical value these places have had on 

Jacksonville’s journey.” j 

New restaurants are popping up in South San 

Marco; Manifest Distilling is the latest addition to 

the Doro District in the Sport Complex.

THE WHETSTONIAN 

A Masterpiece of Outsider Art and a Treasure Trove of Collective History

Walter Whetstone has spent a lifetime collecting his city’s excised memories, especially from historically black neighborhoods like LaVilla, and 

has assembled his findings in the walk-through collage on Jefferson Street he calls the Whetstonian. “If Smithson can have his Smithsonian,” he 

explains, “then Whetstone can have the Whetstonian.” 

The Whetstonian may well be Jacksonville’s greatest work of 

art, though Walter shakes his head dismissively at the notion that 

he’s an artist. He’s always had an eye for strange artifacts, life on 

the verge of disappearance and the aesthetics of arranging the 

city’s castoffs. 

Situated on half a city block that includes a 1927 two-story 

brick commercial structure, a 1965 life insurance building, and 

the space where shotgun shacks once stood between them, 

the Whetstonian incorporates old restaurant signs, a Harriet 

Tubman bust, fluegelhorns and trumpets and trombones and 

piano innards, blackface statuettes and portraits of black Jesuses, 

carousel horses, mannequin parts, tall tin plates emblazoned 

with architectural slogans by Mies van der Rohe and Frank Lloyd 

Wright, and human-faced suns in factory cogs. 

Little of LaVilla escaped demolition during Mayor Ed Austin’s 

“River City Renaissance” in the early 1990s. Once a plantation, 

then a thriving black neighborhood just west of downtown, the 

densest and most culturally vibrant district in Jacksonville’s history, 

LaVilla was largely destroyed during Austin’s “urban renewal.” 

Among the remains of LaVilla stand the old Brewster Hospital, 

three shotgun shacks, the Ritz Theatre and Museum, and the Clara 

White Mission. 

“They would have got this place too,” Walter says, and it still 

seems miraculous the Whetstones saved their block. He asks me

to imagine the Whetstonian “multiplied by 

everything that disappeared in LaVilla,” 

and says, “There’s a lot of black history 

around here. Including me.” 

For years, Walter constantly added to 

and altered Jacksonville’s great “Outsider 

Art” masterpiece. Outsider Art — associated 

with Simon Rodia’s Watt’s Towers, St. 

EOM’s Pasaquan, and Howard Finster’s 

Paradise Garden — refers to art created 

by people neither trained in the arts, nor 

seeking artistic fame, who yet have an 

unyielding passion and compulsion to 

create. Artists, academics, and activists 

across Jacksonville would love to see the 

Whetstonian saved, but the Whetstones 

are weary. 

Walter Whetstone has spent most of 

his life “outside.” When he delivered telegrams 

for Western Union, the law forbade 

him to sit on benches in downtown’s 

Hemming Park. Once, before Walter 

was presented with an insurance sales 

award at a swanky hotel, a business executive 

flagged him down to carry his luggage 

to his room. 

Walter will be 80 in January. He’s suffered 

two strokes in the last two years. 

His wife Dot often speaks for him now. 

His health is failing fast, vandals have stolen 

Whetstonian artifacts, and with Walter 

no longer able to sell life insurance from 

his corner office, back taxes have accrued. 

“This is not how I envisioned living the 

last years of my life,” Dot says. Walter 

looks to a mural on an inner Union Street 

wall depicting the narrative of his life, 

drops his tired eyes, and says, “This too 

shall pass. This too shall pass.” We hope 

not. The Whetstonian deserves to be preserved 

for generations to come. j

KITCHEN TALK: 

MATT MEDURE 

On his latest project Rue St. Marc

Matthew Medure grew up in Pennsylvania. His plan was to go to 

culinary school, then work for his family’s catering business. After 

going to culinary school and earning his wings at The Ritz-Carlton 

Amelia Island, he changed his mind. 

In 1997, Medure opened Matthew’s Restaurant in San Marco. 

It was the start of the empire that is now M Hospitality, 

co-owned with his brother David. The restaurant group consists 

of four M Shack locations, Matthew’s and Restaurant 

Medure. Six restaurants is cool, but seven is the lucky number. 

I sat down to talk with Matthew about his latest venture, Rue 

St. Marc (RSM) in San Marco. 

The concept, according to Matthew, will bridge the gap 

between the elevated cuisine of Matthew’s and a more casual 

dining vibe. It will be the first restaurant in the group that will 

be open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Matthew describes it as, 

“A cool, hip, mildly French, kind of hipster place that would be 

communal, social and inexpensive,” while featuring a chef-driven 

menu that meets the high-technique standard that is showcased in 

the M Hospitality fine dining establishments. 

Rue St. Marc will be located across the street from Matthew’s 

Restaurant in a building that M Hospitality has owned for the past 

11 years, and has mainly used as a commissary. 

The Medure brothers have assembled an Avengers-like team to 

run this new venture. The fierce Gabby Saul will be the beverage 

director. She was previously the head bartender at Restaurant 

Medure, and is arguably one of the best mixologists in town 

given that she has won the Judge’s Choice award at First Coast 

Magazine’s 2015 Toast of the Coast competition (TOC) and the 

People’s Choice Award at the 2016 TOC. Sweets extraordinaire, 

Rebecca Reed from Matthew’s will fly in as the executive pastry 

chef. She will be baking my favorite focaccia bread, rustic 

baguettes, croissants, brioche buns for the burgers and pastries. 

Scott Alters, will be the executive chef and general manager. A 

graduate of the Culinary Institute of America in New York, he 

cut his chops at La Toque in Napa Valley and has held numerous 

roles within M Hospitality over the years. 

I asked Matthew what he wanted to accomplish in 2017. He 

said that iron sharpens iron, steel sharpens steel. “My vision 

for 2017 is refinement,” he says. “The focus will be inward. After 

Rue St. Marc, there will be no more growth in 2017.” He is going 

to fine tune his restaurant group machine providing the best possible 

experience for all involved. 

Jacksonville’s dining scene continues to blossom with no signs 

of slowing down, and Matthew Medure has proven to have the 

Midas touch. I can’t wait to for Rue St. Marc to open so I can stay 

there all day and eat breakfast, lunch and dinner.

TAVERN POINTS

If you have lived in the Jacksonville area for a while, you might know Chef Jeffrey Forrest. He was the owner 

and chef of Crush, his previous Jacksonville culinary venture that opened in the first years of the 21st century. 

Many of his former staff went on to open Orsay. After Crush, Chef Forrest left the First Coast to work in New 

York City, and recently made his way back to the urban core. He teamed up with partners Hannah Alexander 

At Five Points Tavern, Chef Forrest creates rustic 

French dishes using American ingredients in a 

comfortable and casual setting. Trust me, this 

isn’t some fancy restaurant trying to push out 

French dishes that you can’t understand. The 

premise behind Five Points Tavern is to make 

the guest feel comfortable while serving serious food, the 

kind you will enjoy and remember. 

There are many delicious dishes to choose from at Five 

Points Tavern. I decided to taste test something fit for 

winter. I haven’t come across many menus locally that have 

bouillabaisse listed, so I headed my palate in that direction. 

Bouillabaisse is a classic French fish stew with a lot of history. 

The origins of this Mediterranean dish are legendary.
