Making It On Your Own
Doesn’t Mean Making It By Yourself
Franchise ownership can be the perfect vehicle for achieving financial success. If you select a
strong franchise brand, you’ll receive support from both the franchisor and franchisees since
everyone’s success is closely tied together. You’ll own and run a business, while benefitting from
the experience, advice, and buying power provided by the franchisor. Your fellow franchisees
will also help advise you.
The biggest risk in franchising is investing in a brand that does not have the infrastructure
or wherewithal to support you. One of the best ways to know if a franchise delivers on what they
promise is to simply see what franchisees have to say. While you absolutely should take the time
to speak with franchisees at brands you are interested in, Franchise Business Review gives you
a broader picture. We surveyed nearly 30,000 franchisees over the past 18 months in order to
identify the top 200 brands with the most satisfied franchisees (see page 10). While there are
thousands of franchise opportunities to invest in, the companies that make our annual Top
Franchises ranking are among the best of the best.
To further assist you in your franchise research, we outlined within this report what to look
for in a franchise, things to consider prior to investing in a franchise, how to finance your
franchise, and advice for running your franchise business. More information on these topics
can be found at FranchiseBusinessReview.com.
If you select a strong
franchise brand, you’ll
receive support from
both the franchisor
and franchisees since
closely tied together.
ABOUT OUR RESEARCH
Participation in Franchise Business Review’s franchisee satisfaction
research is free for all North American franchise systems with a
minimum of 10 franchisees. For this report, we surveyed approximately
30,000 franchisees representing 334 brands between May 2015 and
November 2016 (18 months). We asked each franchisee to answer 33
benchmark questions ranking their franchise in the areas of financial
opportunity, training and support, leadership, operations and product
development, core values (e.g., honesty and integrity of franchisor), general
satisfaction, and the franchisee community. We also asked them to
answer an additional 16 questions about their market area, demographics,
business lifestyle, overall enjoyment running their franchise, and role
in the franchisee community. From this data, we identified our list of
Top Franchises with the highest franchisee satisfaction. Surveys to
determine the Top Franchises for 2018 are underway. If you are a
franchisor and would like to participate, please call 866-397-6680 or
2017’s Top Franchise Opportunities:
A look at what makes a strong franchise and franchisees successful
Whether you own a McDonald’s or a lesserknown
franchise brand such as TeamLogic
IT or The Little Gym, franchising is a unique
business endeavor. You are a business owner,
but expected to follow the franchisor’s proven
business model. You are responsible for your
own success, but supported by your fellow
franchisees and franchisor.
“My husband and I were looking for
an opportunity to start our own venture.
We considered mortgages, car washes, etc.
I personally insisted on choosing a franchise
The franchise model allowed me to choose the business
I wanted without any experience in the industry.
operation because of the support system it
offered. I felt that there was no point in us
trying to recreate the wheel of success that had
already been laid out for us. We just needed
to pick it up, make it our own, and do
the work,” says Crystal Gipson, who owns a
Minuteman Press franchise in Georgetown,
TX with her husband Ty. The Gipsons opened
their location in 2006 and report they had
$2.5 million in 2016 gross revenue.
“I was actually forced to open my own
business. I was a Purchasing Manager in a
Left: Vapor Shark franchisees are poised to benefit from Research and Markets’ projection that the worldwide vape products market will reach around US$32.11 billion by 2021.
Right: Milton and Gina Chancellor, as owners of a FASTSIGNS franchise, help people with their signage and other communication needs.
corporate environment, but due to consolidation
I would have had to relocate, which my
family and I did not want to do,” says Milton
Chancellor, who opened his FASTSIGNS
of Tuscaloosa, AL franchise in October 2014
with his wife, Gina. “I looked at the available
jobs and other business opportunities. The
franchise model allowed me to choose the
business I wanted without any experience in
the industry.”
Determining if franchising is the right fit
for you and, if it is, which franchise will
best meet your goals, are both essential steps
successful franchisees take.
“The first question a first-time franchisee
needs to answer is, ‘Do I really want to take the
step to be my own boss?’. Any person who has
ever gotten into business for themselves, acts
from a place of courage and conviction,” says
Vic Ciuffetelli, CEO of ActionCOACH.
If you do want to be your own boss, this
report outlines the steps you should take to
make it happen. It also features 200 franchise
brands (page 10) across franchising’s variety of
sectors ranked highest by those who know
everything about them—their franchisees.
Questions to Ask Franchisees
The following are questions to ask franchisees in order to obtain valuable feedback regarding
the franchise you are interested in:
1. Did the opening of your business go according to plan?
2. How effective and useful was your initial training and is the ongoing training?
3. How much support does the franchisor give you on a day-to-day basis?
4. If you run into problems, does the franchisor help you solve them?
5. Does the franchisor visit you regularly?
6. How helpful are the operations and training manuals?
7. If the franchisor supplies products, do they arrive on time and is their quality consistent?
8. How long did it take to break even?
9. When did you make a profit?
10. What was your first year gross revenue? What is it now?
11. Has turnover and profitability been in line with what the franchisor told you it would be?
12. Does the franchisor facilitate franchisees interacting with each other? If yes, how?
13. How helpful are the other franchisees?
14. What do you wish you had known going into business that you did not?
15. Is there anything you would have done differently?
SPECIAL REPORT: Top Franchises
WHY FRANCHISING?
You may well be wondering if you should
start a business from scratch or invest in a
franchise. According to the International
Franchise Association, there are 780,000 franchise
establishments that produce $890 billion
of economic output for the U.S. economy,
which makes one thing clear—franchising is a
path many people take. Let’s take a look at
some of the reasons why.
Reduced Risk: When you buy a franchise,
you’re not only buying an established brand
name, you’re buying into a proven concept
and business model. You’ll be able to follow
the company’s roadmap in bringing your
business to market, and tap into an established
brand and customer base.
Pre-Opening and Ongoing Support: The
franchisor provides you with pre-opening
support including training in how to set up
and operate the business. Typically, you’ll also
be assisted with site selection and your grand
opening depending on the type of franchise
you purchase. You’ll continue to be supported
by your franchisor through ongoing training,
marketing, R&D, purchasing, and more as
long as you are a franchisee.
Franchise Network: One of the greatest
assets of any franchise opportunity is the
community of franchisees. You’ll have access
to a group of owners from whom you can get
business advice, learn tricks of the trade, and
receive moral support. Cooperation between
franchisees is a critical component of success.
The best franchise companies foster these
relationships through annual conferences,
regional meetings, online communities, and
regular conference calls.
“The Zaxby’s franchisee community is a
close one and other franchisees are always
willing to lend a helping hand. The input of
other franchisees was crucial when opening
my first store. Without their advice and
support, I would have struggled significantly
more,” says Neil Glezen, who owns five Zaxby’s
in North Carolina with his wife, Adrianne.
“I currently seek out other franchisee advice
often when making decisions.”
EXPERT CORNER
Things to Do Before
Investing in a Franchise
>>> Interview existing franchisees
“Interview as many existing franchisees from the company as possible
before making a decision. Great information can be gained talking to
people who have experience working as a franchisee.”
— Neil and Adrianne Glezen own five Zaxby’s in North Carolina.
>>> Get your financing in line
“Make sure your financing is in line to support the ramp up time.
Don’t go in with blinders on as to the amount of work or investment
that is needed. Decide early on if you are going to do the work and
the management, or if you are going to hire for it.”
— Ty and Crystal Gipson own a Minuteman Press in Texas.
>>> Believe in the product, service, the Franchisor and its future
“Ensure you are (a) excited by the deliverables of the franchise, have a
passion for it (b) can see a sustainable future, good potential market,
and (c) that the Franchisor validates well when you speak with its
franchisees, that what you are being told is the reality of the business.”
— Vic Ciuffetelli, CEO of ActionCOACH.
>>> Understand the commitment for yourself and your family
“The most important consideration for me was my family. I made sure
that my spouse understood what we were getting into. The fact
that business ownership is hard and there would be problems.
I had a meeting with my accountant and wife together. I explained
to her that there would be long hours, employees quitting, machines
breaking down, and that money may be tight. I would have never
made the choice without her agreeing to opening a FASTSIGNS. If all
stakeholders are in and totally understand what you are getting into,
they will be supportive. I would then meet with your accountant and
prepare a business plan for your first three years of business.”
— Milton Chancellor owns a FASTSIGNS in Alabama.
>>> Have realistic expectations of the business
“Visit as many current franchisees as possible in the system you are
contemplating to get first hand feedback. This will help you have
realistic expectations of the business.”
— Trey Owen, CEO of PF United Partners,
owner of 60 Planet Fitness clubs.
that you have a proven road map to success to
follow. In addition, your marketing costs are
shared and your franchisor negotiates bulkpurchasing
rates that are passed on to you.
You are also provided with support in multiple
areas including marketing, training, and IT. If
you had your own business, you would have
to pay contractors or staff to fulfill these roles.
Before you completely shut down the idea
of starting your own business or exploring
other options to franchising, it’s important to
consider a few things.
Startup Costs and Royalties: In order to
qualify to purchase a franchise, you’ll need a
certain amount in non-borrowed assets and
must be able to make a down payment. In
addition, you must pay an initial franchise fee.
You’ll also have to pay a monthly royalty fee.
Not 100% in Control: Brand consistency is
probably the most crucial element of a
franchise’s success. To maintain it, franchise
owners are expected to adhere to the franchisor’s
best practices. For example, if you
purchase a fast food franchise, you will not be
able to tap into your inner creative chef
because your franchisor will retain control
over the menu. You’ll likely be told which
suppliers you can work with as well. The
franchisor will probably also determine your
business hours, signage, and employee uniforms.
In addition, your franchisor will limit
your business to a specific location or sales
territory to protect other franchisees within
the brand. All of this is not perceived as a bad
thing by most franchisees.
“I like the support I receive from our franchisor.
By not having to worry about menu
innovation, marketing, etc., I can spend more
time focusing on the operations of my business,”
says Glezen of Zaxby’s.
Our research shows that many franchisees
feel entering franchising was the right choice
for them. When asked if they enjoy operating
their business and if they would “do it all over
again”, 89% of franchisees said yes.
GETTING STARTED IN FRANCHISING
Regardless of your business experience or skill
set, if you are thinking of owning a franchise,
here are some things you need to know.
How to Select a Franchise
When considering a particular franchise, take
a careful look at the following:
What Interests You: Many people compare
entering a franchise agreement to a marriage.
Questions to Ask Franchisors
To help determine if the franchise you are considering is a good investment, ask the franchisor
the following questions:
1. How long has the franchisor been franchising?
2. What is the expertise/experience of the executive team?
3. Is this business financially sound? Ask if they can provide three years’ of audited accounts
and current management accounts and have your accountant look at them.
4. How many existing franchise owners are there?
5. How many franchise owners have failed? Why did they fail?
6. What areas will you receive support in and how much support will be available to you?
7. What data is there to prove the viability of the marketplace? Is there a long-term market
for the products or services?
8. Who are the main competitors and how do they compare to the franchise in terms of price,
quality, delivery, and service?
9. How much is the start-up investment and what does it include?
10. How much will you have to pay the franchisor on an ongoing basis?
11. What are the financial projections for your business?
12. Is there a set territory? How does the franchisor prevent its franchisees cannibalizing
business from each other?
13. How long is the term of the franchise agreement? Can you renew it?
You have to be sure the business will hold
your interest over the term of the franchise
agreement—many of which can be 10 or 15
years long. It is important to think about what
would achieve this—your role in the business,
the focus of the business, other factors.
The Traits it Takes: Franchisors feel there
are certain traits their successful franchisees
share. A strong need to succeed, support at
home, a healthy attitude towards sales, and
14. Do you have to achieve minimum sales goals or to purchase a minimum amount of product?
What will happen if you don’t meet these expectations?
15. Can you sell the business? Are there any restrictions regarding doing so?
16. How long does it take to be up and running once the agreement is signed?
EXPERT CORNER
Advice for Your
First Year in Business
>>> Be involved, define roles, focus on relationships
“Be involved and have defined roles if you are going in with a spouse or
business partner. It can be stressful if you are not clear with each other.
Focus on developing business relationships, but start small. Don’t go
after the biggest fish first! You don’t always get a second chance at
those customers and you may not be ready to handle the workload or
have the knowledge base yet. Build your customer base with all levels
of work and industries.”
— Ty and Crystal Gipson own a Minuteman Press in Texas.
>>> Follow your franchise model
“Focus on following your franchise model. This is the biggest advantage
of getting into a franchise.”
— Trey Owen, CEO of PF United Partners,
owner of 60 Planet Fitness clubs.
>>> Stay committed and dedicated to the business and employees
“You need to be very committed and dedicated to the business if you
want to be successful. It is hard work. Be aggressive with sales and
marketing. If you are not comfortable with a function of the business,
then hire a person that will fill that gap. I also would say the culture of
your company is the most important factor for your business. If your
employees are not happy working for you, it will be a problem.”
— Milton Chancellor owns a FASTSIGNS in Alabama.
>>> Get your company's name out there
Competition: How much competition for the
product or service already exists in your area?
Is the competition already well established?
What would differentiate the franchise from
existing competitors? Does the franchise sell
products or services that are easily available
online or through a catalog?
“You cannot rely on the Internet for leads. Be actively engaged in
getting your company’s name out there.”
— Zach Nolte, Chief Development Officer of Kitchen Solvers.
Brand Recognition: Well-known franchise
brands with a good reputation are more likely
to attract customers faster than relatively new
ones. If you opt to invest in a younger franchise,
you’ll have to work even harder to create
customer demand.
Your Exit Strategy: Your long-term business
goals should be a major factor when selecting
a franchise to invest in. Whether you want to
pass your franchise business on to a family
member or ultimately sell the business will
influence which franchise model is best for you.
“Franchisees should start with an exit plan
in mind since it will help shape their business,”
says Zach Nolte, Chief Development Officer of
Kitchen Solvers. “The Kitchen Solvers model
is designed to enable franchisees to remove
themselves from the day-to-day operations so
they can grow their business into one that has
the infrastructure and reputation necessary to
make it interesting to a buyer.”
Complaints: It’s a good idea to see if any complaints
have been filed against the franchisor
with franchise regulators, Better Business
Bureaus, or local consumer protection agencies
in your state or the franchisor’s home
state. You should also compare online customer
reviews to reviews of similar businesses
in your area. If there are complaints about
the company, or low customer satisfaction
reviews, this should be a huge red flag.
Does It Deliver in Key Areas?: Strong franchise
systems excel in several areas. It’s important
to ensure the brand you are considering
does so as well.
• Training and Support: You will get a big
head start in achieving success with your
business and likely be able to sustain it if the
initial training and ongoing support by your
franchisor is strong. You want to ensure you
won’t simply be trained and then left to fend
for yourself.
“Very few of our franchisees have remodeling
experience. We provide them with a
two week training course that gives them
a strong foundation in the remodeling business
followed by three to four months of
ongoing training,” says Nolte of Kitchen
Solvers.
SPECIAL REPORT: Top Franchises
“We provide new franchisees with at least
eight weeks of intensive training in all areas
of business ownership, management, sales,
local marketing, and specifically in how to
service the customer and deal with many
insurance companies to offer the most competitive
prices possible,” says Jose Merille,
President of Estrella Insurance. “Then we
spend additional time when they open their
business in order to get them going.”
• Leadership: Established brands clearly have
years of experience selling goods or services
and managing a franchise system. For newer
brands, you need to find out if the management
team has what it takes to successfully
grow the system. Our research reveals the
following regarding franchise leadership:
When asked if they respect their franchisor,
84% of franchisees replied yes. When asked
if they believe their franchisor acts with a
high level of integrity, 81% replied yes.
• Marketing: No matter what you sell or where
you’re located, effective marketing will help
you get customers. Most franchisors take
care of national marketing, but many expect
the franchisees to take care of their local
marketing. It’s important to understand
what your marketing fees will be and what
they will include.
• Innovation: Consumers have many choices
these days, so it is important the franchise is
constantly making strategic efforts to positively
stand apart from the competition.
Valuable insight into many of the areas
above can be obtained via two sources:
1. Franchisees: Speak with current franchisees
and ask the franchisor to share their
franchisee satisfaction survey results. Many
of the brands featured in this report share
their franchisee satisfaction survey results
for free within the Franchise Reviews section
of FranchiseBusinessReview.com.
2. Franchise Disclosure Document (FDD):
A franchisor’s FDD provides you with information
about the brand, its system, and the
agreements you will need to sign. Resources
DO YOU THINK BIG?
Some people enter franchising planning to
become multi-unit owners.
“I was in an unrelated business when I was
introduced to Planet Fitness,” says Trey Owen,
who opened his first Planet Fitness club in 2010
and now serves as CEO of PF United Partners,
owner of 60 Planet Fitness clubs around the
country. “I was intrigued and started to research
the business since I was looking for one that
I could replicate in multiple locations.”
We asked Owen to explain how he was able
to expand so quickly.
“We went through several iterations of
growth. At first, we grew one club per year
with the backing of private investors. After
four locations, circa 2013, we started to grow
exponentially with the acquisition of new
development territory and attraction of more
private capital,” says Owen. “ In 2015 we made
our first acquisition of existing Planet Fitness
locations and built another eight locations.
Our evolution culminated at the end of 2016
with the consolidation, merger, and creation
of a new Planet Fitness franchisee group with
five different franchisees. That transaction
turned out to be large enough to be backed by
institutional partners. We, now as United PF
Partners, have 60 clubs and more development
territory across 10 states.”
If you are interested in multi-unit ownership,
additional information can be found in our Top
Multi-Unit Franchises report, which is available
for free at FranchiseBusinessReview.com.
The following are a few things you should
consider.
“Be flexible and open to all ideas on how to
grow. You’ll have to take some risks such as
being a guarantor on a bank note or diluting
equity in your business to investor partners if
they are providing the capital,” says Owen.
“Ultimately, you should view your business
through the lens of multi-unit early on. Hire a
CPA earlier than you think you should because
having clean and professional financial statements
becomes more and more important as
your business grows.”
HOW TO FUND YOUR FRANCHISE
The largest barrier when it comes to opening
a franchise is typically access to capital. Fortunately
there are a variety of ways you can fund
your franchise investment including:
Owning a franchise or a group of them can be a
fulfilling and lucrative endeavor and results in many
people achieving the American dream.
SBA Loans: One of the most common forms
of financing, these loans—up to $5 million—
are guaranteed by the Small Business Administration
(SBA) and lent by banks.
Low-doc SBA Loans: An alternative for those
searching for lower amounts of capital,
$150,000 or less, these loans offer you the same
benefits as SBA Loans with a shorter turn-time.
Rollovers for Business Start-Ups: Rollovers
for Business Start-ups allow you to utilize your
retirement funds without taking a taxable
distribution to start a franchise.
Portfolio Loans: If you own bonds, mutual
funds, stocks, or other securities, you may
be able to leverage those funds to open your
business—without liquidation.
Unsecured Loans: You won’t need collateral
to qualify for these loans, which can happen in
just three weeks. They are a great option if you
need a fast funding solution.
For more information about these funding
options, visit the Franchise Financing section
of FranchiseBusinessReview.com. For a detailed
walkthrough on funding your franchise, visit
FBR’s Franchise Buyer’s Toolkit.
The good news is that there is a franchise
for every budget. You’ll notice many have
start-up costs of $100,000 or less, some as low
as $500, on page 10 of this report.
ACHIEVING THE AMERICAN DREAM
Owning a franchise or a group of them can be
a fulfilling and lucrative endeavor and results
in many people achieving the American
dream.
“Personally and professionally, I am proud
of what we have built together,” says Gipson of
Minuteman Press. “Some mornings we step
back as we are pulling into the parking lot and
say, ‘Wow! We did this.’”
Although there are many success stories,
franchising is not for everyone. Like any business
opportunity, don’t rush into buying a
franchise. Be sure to take the time to do the
due diligence outlined within this report, to
evaluate your findings, and determine the
best path for you. Considering franchises that
are well regarded by their franchisees such as
those on page 10 of this report is a great way
to immediately narrow your focus.
“Franchises that survey their franchisees
realize that transparency and openness contributes
to a trusting relationship,” says Eric
Stites, CEO of Franchise Business Review.
“Franchisee satisfaction ratings show you
whether or not a franchise opportunity is
really as good as it appears and fits your values
and vision by providing insight into a system’s
culture, training, leadership, financial outlook,
franchisee community and much more.”
Family Fare
Durham, NC
Franchisee since 2013
Why did you purchase your franchise? As an
experienced convenience store operator, the
franchise model seemed to be a good fit and
opportunity for me. The leadership at Family Fare
is proactive. They are not satisfied with status
quo or being anything but the best. Family Fare is
always looking for ways to improve the Franchise
model and to make my business and me more
successful.
What experience did you have prior to
becoming a franchisee that you have found
particularly helpful? Due to my 25 years
in a retail grocery and convenience store
management role and seven years as a sales
representative for Millstone Coffee, I was able to
hit the ground running when I joined Family Fare.
What things do you like most about your job?
I love the interaction and relationships I have
with my customers and employees as well as
Family Fare’s management and support staff.
As a member of the Franchisee Advisory Board,
I also enjoy providing input from my perspective
and that of other franchisees to Family Fare.
What advice do you have for prospective
franchise buyers? Check out the financial
arrangement and find one that enables you
to do something you love to do. I believe that
franchising is your best way to achieve your
dreams and goals.
Sanford Rose Associates
Atlanta, GA
Franchisee since 2015
What was it about your franchise that led
you to purchase it? The speed at which
Sanford Rose Associates (SRA) could get me
in business for myself via its proven business
model. The leadership has the experience of
running a business in the executive search
industry and scaling it to a size. This is a difficult
accomplishment.
How has SRA helped you be successful? The
resources provided by SRA gave me the tools
to quickly scale my company, Boaz Partners. My
website was built, my letterhead ready, and my
database installed in a matter of a couple of
weeks. These and other things SRA did allowed
me to jump in and focus on producing billing
opportunities. Additionally, being a part of SRA
helps me tell a story and speak to resources for
my prospective employees. When I tell a new
hire I have a six-week training program, I see
their surprise that a firm my size would have such
capabilities.
How long did it take to make a profit? Within
three months I started making a profit and within
six I had expanded my firm by adding 50% to
my workforce. I remained profitable after that
growth. In year two my profits have soared.
What is your work/life balance? The great
thing about our business is you can do it from
anywhere. When my family took a vacation, I
carried my laptop and cellphone and set up
a remote office at the beach. Candidates and
clients did not know the difference. I have found
few Monday to Friday positions that have the
capability of earning $200k plus per year with
little overnight travel and working less than
50 hours a week. This business has that type
of potential, not just for an owner, but also for
someone working for the franchise.
Why did you decide to buy a franchise?
To benefit from the expertise and experience
of industry professionals and a proven successful
Why did you choose your franchise? I felt that
Interim HealthCare offered the strongest support
network. In addition, I liked that its business
model would enable me to pursue many different
business lines within the home health industry.
What is the best part of your job? I chose this
industry in order to make a direct positive impact
on the lives of my clients. This benefit has proven
to be the absolute best part of my job as an
active Owner and President.
Where do you see yourself in five years?
Meeting my yearly gross revenue projections
generated from three offices in the Richmond,
VA area and my role being providing top line
What keeps you up at night? Two key issues
cause me to lose sleep. Retention of key
employees and effective management of
cash flow.
What advice do you have for prospective
franchise buyers? Buying a franchise is a
long-term commitment. You want a proven,
committed partner that is vested in your success
Office Pride Commercial Cleaning Services
Fredericksburg, VA
Franchisee since 2016
Why did you invest in Office Pride? Franchising
was the last thing my father AT, who I own the
business with, and I were looking for. We wanted
to start our own commercial cleaning company
and found Office Pride when researching local
competition. The strong core values and proven
and established business model are what drew
us in. We felt that this was a company that
resembled our own beliefs. We have always felt
supported.
What do you like most about your career?
Exceeding customer expectations is a great
motivator, but it’s also extremely rewarding to
provide our employees with a career where they
feel valued. We’re all very close and have each
other’s best interests at heart
What experience did you have prior to
becoming a franchisee that helps you run your
business? My father’s experience as a colonel
aviator in the Marines and mine in maintenance
management prepared us to work with and help
a variety of people.
How did you fund your franchise? We received
a 10% veteran’s discount because of my
father’s military career and utilized Office Pride’s
financing options to fund the rest.
BUILD ON THE
LEADERSHIP
OF SANDLER TRAINING
Matt Johnson &
Kathy Quinby-Johnson
Senior Care Authority
Minneapolis, MN
Franchisees since 2014
What do you enjoy most about your business?
It has been a blessing in our lives. We love
working with clients. We help them find a
community that is the right fit for themselves
or their loved ones, which eliminates many of
the stresses that can be involved with senior
placement. We have been told by our clients we
are a “life-saver”, how they couldn’t have done
it without our help.
Why did you select your franchise? We knew
we’d be providing a valuable service based on
the overwhelming experience we had looking for
senior housing and care for our parents. We also
liked the low overhead, which meant we could
manage expenses effectively.
Was it hard to get started? Matt had previously
been in real estate and Kathy in marketing,
so we’ve had a lot to learn. We have, however,
not felt hindered by not having a senior care
background because the training provided by
corporate is so good.
knowing the business will take time to be
THE CLEAR
CHOICE
for a brighter future.
Russ Russell
Cruise Planners
New Braunfels, TX
Franchisee since 2013
Why did you purchase a travel franchise?
Travel agents fill the void left by the online
booking engines. As Internet search engines get
“smarter”, information overload is becoming
more common, so consumers are seeking expert
human interaction.
Has it been difficult to get your business
off the ground? My business in 2014, my first
full calendar year in business, grew 270% over
2013 when I was still working a full-time job
as a trauma nurse researcher and covering the
business only on evenings and weekends.
Why didn’t you opt to start a business
from scratch? I had no previous business
experience and knew the tools and education
provided by Cruise Planners would help me be
successful. From the initial franchisee training
to marketing programs, continuing education,
familiarization trip opportunities, and industry
recognized cutting edge technology tools and
support, Cruise Planners has always been at
my side. Having Cruise Planners backing me up
has also been extremely helpful in cultivating
strategic relationships with sales support staff
within the various cruise lines and tour operators
that I work with daily.
What advice do you have for prospective
franchisees? There is much more to building
a successful business than “If you build it they
will come.” Building your business, however,
with good decisions, great support and expert
tools (all of which Cruise Planners provides) is a
definite way to set yourself up for success.
Jim Holwerda
Remedy Intelligent Staffing
12 locations in Wisconsin
Franchisee since 2008
Why did you buy a franchise? I’d been working in
the staffing industry and was tired of making a lot
of money for someone else. Buying a franchise
gave me the head-start of not having to develop
a system and processes and allowed me to
concentrate on sales and service.
Why did you choose your franchise? The
Remedy opportunity provided more flexibility
to build a large business. I was able to acquire a
large territory and build a very lucrative multisite
operation in just eight years.
What is the best part of your job? My team
and I are proud to provide work for so many
great people. There’s something rewarding
about providing pay checks to help people build
better lives.
Who had influenced your approach to business?
Definitely my parents. They are independent
business owners who taught me important values
like work ethic, forward planning and always to
be looking around corners.
What advice would you have for prospective
franchise buyers? Don’t be in a rush to make a
decision. Talk to existing franchisees to really
understand the business. Be very clear about
what you’ll spend your time doing, particularly
in the early years. We are genuinely a 24/7
business with associates working at all hours
and all days, which results in certain pressures.
If you’re not prepared to sacrifice to achieve
long-term rewards, then this business is probably
not right for you.
Where do you see yourself in five years? I’m
ambitious. I’d like to own the whole state of
Wisconsin and be on track to be a $100M
business. My goal is to be regarded as the
Starbucks of staffing in my markets.
