SPRING <strong>2017</strong> <strong>OLLI</strong> Film Studio Tuesday, February 28 Freeway City, the Story of Gardena, California Filmmaker and director Max Votolato will present his documentary which chronicles the curious and little known history of Gardena. It began as a farming community with a large Japanese-American population that was relocated during World War II. Later it became the Poker Capital of the World. Gardena was also Honda’s first US headquarters and Evel Knievel made his first televised jump at Ascot Park Speedway. Freeway City explores how the “collision of race, politics and casino economics shaped the destiny of Gardena, California.” A question and answer period with Mr. Votolato will follow the screening. (See page 30) Thursday, April 27 Cuba: A Lifetime of Passion Award-winning Documentarian and CSUDH Alumnus Mario Congeve will present his film Cuba: A Lifetime of Passion. With unprecedented access to Cubans on both sides of the Florida Straits, this film examines the present-day reality of the Cuban Revolution and its uncertain post- Castro future, and the conflicts that have engulfed Cuba for the past six decades. Through a series of revealing sequences shot in Cuba and the United States, as well as interviews with individuals who fall on all sides of this issue: pro-Castro Communists and oppositionists in Cuba, U.S. Department of State personnel, academics, and Cubans “stranded in exile” in Miami, this thought-provoking documentary considers Cuba’s past and future, and the legacy of a revolutionary regime that has been in power for 157 years. (See page 33) Wednesday, May 17 Unforgotten: A documentary about the experiences of Vietnamese citizens after the US departure Life was impossibly difficult for Vietnamese citizens after the fall of Saigon. Their stories are told through eyewitness accounts and archival photos. You will hear powerful personal experiences from those who survived, who were eventually released (through US intervention) and who made their way here. This screening will provide you with the opportunity to speak with the film’s director-producer Diem Thuy and with one or two of those who were interviewed. (See page 33)
