Freeway City, the Story of
Gardena, California
NEW!
FREEWAY CITY is a documentary that chronicles the curious and
little known history of Gardena. It began as a farming community
with a large Japanese-American population that was relocated
during World War II. Later it became the Poker Capital of the
World. The demographics changed again after the Watts riots.
Gardena was also Honda’s first US headquarters and Evel Knievel
made his first televised jump at Gardena’s Ascot Park Speedway.
These are just a few of the events in Gardena’s history. FREEWAY
CITY explores how the “collision of race, politics and casino
economics shaped the destiny of Gardena, California.”
FREEWAY CITY is an independent film, shot, edited and directed
by Max Votolato, originally from London, England and currently
residing in Los Angeles. Mr. Votolato will join us for a question
and answer period after the screening.
