From Cows to Concrete—From
Farming Village to Urban Farming
in Los Angeles
Los Angeles was once an agrarian paradise, California’s original
wine country and the agricultural center for produce in the
United States. Dairy farms once flourished where cars now
whizz by on freeways.
In this series of classes, Judi Gerber will discuss our pastoral past,
from the Spanish rancho years through the end of World War II.
You will learn about the farms, vineyards and nurseries that survived
population growth and the real estate developers and the
colorful characters who contributed to our farm history including
fighting for the rights of farm workers. Finally, learn how today’s
urban farmers, using backyards, balconies, beekeeping and community
gardens, are part of a new focus on healthy food, locally
produced and more accessible to our citizens.
