First Strike: Schools and Prisons
in Los Angeles
NEW!
Taking an insider’s perspective, Dr. Sojoyner’s
lecture examines the root causes
of California’s ever-expansive prison
system and disastrous educational policy.
It critiques the trope of the “school-toprison
pipeline,” exploring the realm of
public school as a form of “enclosure”
that has influenced the schooling (and
denial of schooling) and imprisonment of
Black people in California.
Instructor: Justin Gammage, Ph.D.,
Assistant Professor, Africana Studies,
Black Power, Black Lives Matter
and the Politics of Social Movements
NEW!
This presentation will explore the link between direct action protest
and the enactment of public policy that protect African Americans’
social, political and economic rights. In addition, it will examine the
significance of current social movements geared toward challenging
old systems of oppression. It will start by looking at Civil Rights
demonstrations to locate the historical significance of the Black
Power movement. I will conclude by examining the Black Lives
Matters movement as an extension of the Black radical tradition.
