Long Beach Opera:
The Perfect American
NEW!
The Long Beach Opera (LBO) is the oldest opera company
in the LA/OC region. LBO presents new, rarely performed and
unconventional works. “The Perfect American” represents one
of those rare and unconventional experiences—the American
premiere of a work by Philip Glass depicting the final 3 months
of the life of Walt Disney.
There have been polarized views of Disney over the decades. Some
have labeled him a megalomaniac, racist, misogynist who betrayed
strike leaders to the House Un-American Activities Committee.
Others have defended him, placing his attitudes in the social and
political context of his
times. In this regard,
the opera has important
contemporary
reference. It is based on
a controversial fictionalized
biography depicting
Disney in unflattering
terms.
Composer Philip Glass
is considered one of
the most influential
music makers of the 20th century. He has collaborated with artists
as diverse as Twyla Tharp, Woody Allen and David Bowie.
Jerold Kappel, LBO Executive Director and CEO of the LBO, will
offer insight into the origins of this opera, its social setting, and its
internationally well-regarded composer. LBO lectures include not
only opera history, but also musical clips and video… and this one
may include a member of the musical staff as well.
Jerold Kappel has directed major national and international
programs, including the cultural and heritage tourism initiative of
the White House Conference on Travel and Tourism. Mr. Kappel
has served as a guest lecturer at many well-known universities and
conferences. As Executive Director of LBO, he is committed to
expanding its education and community engagement programs.
