Long Beach Opera: “The Fairy Queen”
NEW!
The Long Beach Opera (LBO) is the oldest opera company in the
LA/OC region. Unlike other opera companies, LBO presents new,
rarely performed and unconventional works. The Fairy Queen
represents one of those rare and unconventional experiences—
a gender-bending culture clash of social satire, re-imagining
Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream in our own multicultural
America. Henry Purcell’s music is fused with Chicano
updates from Culture Clash and Baroque overlays from Musica
Angelica. Spoken text and movement combine with the music to
create a truly unique experience—at once 17th century England
and 21st century America.
Jerold Kappel, LBO Executive Director and CEO, will offer insight
into the origins of this opera, the social setting in which it was
created and its rediscovery in the twentieth century. The presentation
covers spoken word, visual images and musical sound.
Jerold Kappel has directed major national and international
programs, including the cultural and heritage tourism initiative of
the White House Conference on Travel and Tourism. Mr. Kappel
has served as a guest lecturer at many well-known universities and
conferences. As Executive Director of LBO, he is committed to
expanding its education and community engagement programs.
