Frank’s Column - He's back !
As some of the readers of Golden Times
magazine may have noticed, my travel column
has been missing for a number of issues. This
has been entirely due to a period in my life
where I have experienced some rather serious
health issues. Now I am on the road to recovery,
but unfortunately there is a small downside: I
am no longer allowed to travel anywhere by air
so future column's could provide me with the
opportunity to wax lyrical about my pre-army
days when I was a lad growing up in Belfast,
and introduce you to my family. There was
eleven of us not including mother and father,
so it was anything but boring!!
In the meantime I want to use a section of
this column to pay tribute to all the front-line
nursing staff who cared for me during my stay
in various hospitals. My illness caused me to
spend time in St. Thomas's in London, The
Conquest Hospital in Hastings, Eastbourne
DGH, and 3 times in the Peterborough City
Hospital. During the entirety of my time under
the care of all the NHS nursing staff I was
looked after with the utmost
respect, and consideration.
It is my honest opinion that
I was frequently looked
after in such a manner that
it could only be regarded as
"Above and beyond the line
of duty" and that comment comes from an old
soldier with 27 years of service behind him.
One of the things I could not help but notice
was the attitude of a small number of patients
whose demanding attitude, and obnoxious
behaviour must have stretched the patience of
the nursing staff to it's limits. I often wondered
if these people are the same ones who
constantly denigrate their hospital treatment ?
Well I think I have spent more than enough time
on my soapbox so I will end this column with
my very best wishes to you all for good health,
and a prosperous New Year.
Till next time, take care, be happy, and watch
how you go - Frank
Over the past 25 years Chesney’s has established itself as the UK’s
leading supplier of luxury fireplaces and wood burning stoves. The
company’s success has been based on a passionate commitment to
good design, intelligent engineering, craftsmanship, innovation and
outstanding service.
Good design is intrinsic to every Chesney’s product. Our period fireplaces are exact copies of antique originals
whilst our contemporary fireplaces include the work of leading designers to reflect current trends in interior
design. Our heating appliances recognise the need to combine aesthetically pleasing design with the latest
energy efficient and climate friendly technology.
Outstanding craftsmanship means using traditional techniques in our manufacturing whether hand carving a
marble chimneypiece or forging steel on a blacksmith’s anvil. These are labour intensive and highly skilled
processes for which there is no substitute.
Intelligent engineering is a hallmark of Chesney’s products in recent years. The company has developed a range
of wood burning stoves and energy efficient gas fires which have received widespread acclaim and product
design awards. These products have all been developed at Chesney’s in-house research and development
facility where a team of engineers are permanently based.
Chesney’s prides itself on its innovation, which has enabled the company to diversify into related product fields
and to lead the market in product design. Every year sees the launch of a new collection of products which
rapidly become the benchmark to which others in the heating industry aspire.
Finally, and most importantly, Chesney’s aims to provide the best possible service to its customers, an aspiration
which is embraced and fostered throughout the company.
Happy New Year - by Julia Meanwell
Traditionally January is deemed the time to take stock
of your life and start creating the changes you'd like
to see in the future. But of course you don’t have to
wait until the New Year to make a new start because
every day is a new beginning.
Now that 2017 has arrived is it the opportune moment
to ask yourself whether you, your relationships and
your life are in good shape? If not, you may have
been glad to see the back of 2016 for any number of
reasons. Maybe I am assuming that everyone wants
to change something but perhaps you are perfectly
content with your life and are fortunate enough to
have it just the way you want it to be.
Every year millions of people make resolutions
only to find that they are usually broken by the
second week in January. The origin of making New
Year's resolutions rests with the Babylonians, who
reportedly made promises to the gods in the hope
that they would earn good favour in the coming year.
They often resolved to get out of debt; I guess not a
lot has changed on that one. Technology often plays
a huge part in the pledges we make to ourselves on
January 1st, with people declaring that they will cut
the amount of times they text people; even reducing
the number of friends they have on Facebook.
New Year, new job? Research from jobs website
raced around the side of the bungalow to investigate. She was at
the far end of the garden and we arrived around the corner just
in time to see her hurl a plastic bowl into the air. The blackberries
it had contained rained around her like purple hail stones. To our
amazement she kicked off a sandal which flew through the air
at a speed of which Rooney would have been proud. Then she
snatched off the other one and threw that away too, bowling it
underarm across the vegetable patch.
The next moment she was racing up the garden path,
frantically fumbling with the fastening of her jeans as she did so.
Pausing briefly only to drop and step out of them, she started
to run again, speeding up like a marathon runner. As she drew
nearer, her now unencumbered legs were pumping up and down
like Bradley Wiggins on his bicycle. To our further astonishment
the area below her navel was clad only in a minute scrap of black
lace.
I was gob-smacked and stopped dead in my tracks. She’d
not been this keen since our honeymoon and then only in the
bedroom!
Excitement over this phenomenon held hands with
embarrassment as my pair of male companions cannoned into
me, keen to see what was happening. They had been expecting
one of her delicious rabbit stews followed by her famous homemade
blackberry-and-apple pie; certainly nothing like this
exhibition! The stunned, grinning faces of our two guests peered
over my shoulders. My wife streaked past us, hardly seeming to
be aware of our presence.
Strewth! she was wearing a thong! The sight of those ample
buttocks bouncing past will remain firmly in the memories of the
three of us for ever.
Stunned, we followed her indoors and were surprised to hear
the sound of running water. I insisted my companions waited,
feeling it was more prudent that for further investigation I should
be alone. Very, very reluctantly they obeyed. Which was really
just as well. The first thing I spied as I entered the bathroom was
the thong lying on the floor and as my gaze travelled across the
room the second horror I saw was my wife’s large, rotund, bare
rear being lowered into the bath. And she was still fully clothed
above the waist.
`What on earth's going on….?' I demanded to know.
Too out of breath to speak, but with her panic now subsiding to
a manageable level, she pointed to her legs. They were swelling
and turning red, as masses of little eruptions amalgamated. On
the waves created by her hasty submergence, floated hundreds
of red ant corpses. Masses of brave little soldiers that had
sacrificed themselves in the line of duty. Poor little devils, they
had only been defending the nest into which she had stuck her
wretched great foot!
LIVING THE
ALEXANDER
WAY OF LIFE
by Liz Jeffries
I always find myself singing
along to this song by Sheryl
Crow when it starts up on the
radio. However, first things
first; Happy New Year to you
dear readers. So who has a
list of New Year resolutions all
ready to activate? I have the
same one every year….not to
make one. It is just a waste
of time, as I never seem to be
able to stick to them.
However, this time of year
is always good for assessing
what’s been good about the
past year and what I want to
learn/work on for the next year.
I always think of myself as a
work in progress. I would hate
to ever feel I know everything,
or couldn’t improve, as I want
to keep on learning. It is also
a great excuse for never having
to be perfect!
Alexander’s discoveries in the
field of musculo/skeletal use
stemmed from the recurrent
vocal problems he suffered
as a Shakespearian reciter.
He realised that his own
body misuse was causing
the hoarseness in his voice.
A Change Will Do You Good
His discovery was around
the relationship between
the head and spine and by
rethinking how he carried out
his activities, he was able to
develop a way of stopping
his previous postural habits
and replace them with an
ease of movement, better
co-ordination and balance.
Indeed, he was able to resume
working after suffering a stroke
when he was seventy-eight
and continued to teach until
a few days before he died
aged eighty-six. Challenging
the way we habitually think
and go about our lives can be
very liberating. It can lead to
exciting new prospects and
stops us becoming stale.
So, what will my changes be
in 2017? I have been teaching
the Alexander Technique as
individual sessions for many
years and love it, but I have
discovered the joys and
merits of teaching in groups,
not just for me, but also for
the participants, so I will be
expanding that. I feel that with
a little more structure to my
day I could get more done, so
I will definitely make a change
there. I am lax at keeping up
with friends, so will change
that ……Oh my goodness,
these are beginning to sound
like New Year resolutions.
I hope 2017 brings you all you
wish for
The Alexander Technique can
help with any musculo/skeletal
problem, tension and stress
conditions. I’ve started new
group drop in sessions at the
Planning an Equity release? You should consider a Will and a Lasting Power of Attorney!
What do people generally use released equity for?
"Using the money for home improvements and holidays –
that trip of a lifetime – is massive but there’s the other end
of the market too, when clients release equity because
they have no choice. A couple might have an interest-only
mortgage which is coming to the end of its term and be
in a position where their existing lender can’t give them
anymore so they’re in a nightmarish situation and being
threatened with repossession. And often people don’t
want to sell or move somewhere cheaper because that
would mean leaving all their friends and family behind.
Is it law that a homeowner releasing equity must have a
will?
"No it’s not law – it’s just best practice to have a will and
also an LPA. To be eligible to release equity, clients have
to be at least 55 and typically they’re in their late 60s so
it’s all part of holistic retirement planning. And wills and
LPAs relate to that too – people ensuring their affairs are
in order for peace of mind..
"I believe that equity release and will writing are going to
become more married over time as, with the Government’s
pension reforms, there’s a lot of work going on to make
sure everybody is looking at retirement in its entirety."
What sort of problems can clients hit with equity release
if they don’t have a will and LPA?
"Well, for couples not having an LPA can cause problems.
A good example is that of drawdown products so that’s
when a lender gives a lump sum at the beginning. A client
might take out £10,000 initially because that’s what they
require immediately
and then ring fence
a certain amount –
maybe £50,000 – that
they won’t be paying
interest against. But
for a couple, to draw
against that £50,000
– generally in chunks
of £2-5000 at a time – both of them need to agree and
sign the papers. And if they don’t have an LPA and one
of them loses mental capacity that facility is essentially
going to be withdrawn as only one of them can make
the request. So LPAs are really important in instances
like that, ensuring that the spouse and a third party are
appointed so that property and affairs can continue to be
managed as our clients would wish."
Do you think having wills and LPAs when taking out equity
release products should be written into law?
"I think that would be a little too nanny state – obviously
there’s a cost associated with making a will so it has to be
down to personal choice. And there could be people who
just don’t have a problem with the intestacy rules and are
happy for their money to go wherever so, for them, setting
down that a will has to be part and parcel of an equity
release scheme would be unfair, although it’s obviously
strongly advised to be a good idea to sort it out."
Tricia's column - Resolution Revolution
T
he start of the year always seems to be
the time we're told to reinvent ourselves.
New Year, New You, all that sort of thing.
Well what if I like me as I am ? What
if I quite enjoy my bad habits ? What if I like
eating junk food and not doing any exercise ?
Maybe the "old me" read a bit about the potential
"New me" and thought she sounded a bit boring.
My suggestion to all of my readers who find
themselves being badgered by a lifestyle guru to
make some changes is to tell them to mind their
own business!
Having over half a dozen grandchildren (and
being a great aunt to another four) you won't
be surprised to hear that Christmas can be a
bit hectic for me. It can be quite tiring to be on
the receiving end of a fifteen minute lecture on
the merits of a Star Wars space ship made from
734 plastic bricks. Over the years I've become an
expert at feigning fascination. Wine always helps.
The girls are a bit more fun, especially the
smallest ones as you can put ridiculous amounts
of make up on them when their mother's not
looking and the kids absolutely love every minute!
The parents aren't always best pleased, but I just
Singing sensation and X Factor
favourite Joe McElderry will
once again wear the world’s
most famous coat in the UK’s
longest running musical on
stage at the White Rock Theatre,
Hastings from the 14th to the
18th of February.
Joe’s title-role debut in
the 2016 production of
Joseph was his first major
theatrical appearance, and
his performance was met with
5 star reviews and standing
ovations up and down the
country.
Star of the show Joe was just
18 when he won the sixth series
of ‘The X Factor’ having been
mentored by Girls Aloud star
Cheryl Cole and beating off
fierce competition from Olly
Murs and Stacey Solomon.
Having garnered sensational
reviews and standing ovations
at every performance since its
inception over 36 years ago,
Bill Kenwright’s ‘amazing’,
‘superb’, ‘wonderful’ and
‘brilliant’ production has now
sold an estimated 20 million
tickets.
This vibrant and exciting
retelling of the biblical story
about Joseph, and the coat
of many colours sings out
to young and old alike with a
score crammed wall to wall
with hits, including Jacob and
Sons, Close Every Door and
Any Dream Will Do.
For your chance to WIN a family
ticket (4 people) to see Joseph,
just answer the following
question:
How old was Joe McElderry when
he won the X Factor ?
have to raise an eyebrow and
they'll remember what they got
up to with my mother when they
were little.
Having all that fun does wear
you out a bit though so by the
time you're reading this piece I
shall be toasting the new year
on a beach in the Canary Islands
with a cold glass of wine. I think
it's only fair that I escape a little bit of the bleak
midwinter and recharge my batteries ahead of
the Spring!
For those of you still enjoying wintertime in
Blighty, there's no better way to lift your spirits
than a trip to see a fantastic show, and it's even
better if you win free tickets, so make sure you
enter the competition at the foot of this page !
That about wraps things up from me then, I
hope you all have a wonderful start to the year
and I shall see you in March, when our sister
magazine, The Family Buzz, returns for it's 5th
birthday issue. I wonder if they'll have a party ?
I've organised an awful lot of 5th birthday parties
in my time, you know...
GLADYS GALLIVANTS - IN SEARCH OF A BUSINESS
“What have you got in your bag ?” the airport security
lady at Brisbane Airport was standing next to me,
her crime busting partner, a Springer Spaniel sitting
smugly beside my red rucksack. My fellow passengers
with whom I had been conversing, melted away as the
strident Australian voice of authority awaited my answer.
Confronted by the law I was momentarily speechless.
“Bugsy is a trained fruit dog and has smelt something
illegal in your luggage.” Realisation dawned. “I had an
apple at Singapore Airport, wrapped the core and put
it in the side pocket planning to find a dustbin before
my flight. Suddenly the announcement came over the
loudspeaker, I grabbed my belongings and rushed to
the boarding gate. Honestly I had completely forgotten
to throw the packet away,” came my longwinded excuse.
Sheepishly, I took out the offending package. Bugsy
stood up and looked at his handler with an attitude of
‘I told you so.’ “Kindly dispose of it immediately,” the
hard utterance of the uniform commanded.
That was not quite how I planned to start my business
search.
Buying and selling enterprises appeared to be an Aussie
hobby with many small entrepreneurs changing their
lifestyle and occupations every 10 years. A Lighting
Shop, Outboard Motor Sales, Fumigation, Undertaking,
Swimming Pool Cleaning, Mexican Restaurant, were all
on offer.
As a trained tour guide, my favourite was a tourist
company in Alice Springs that I investigated while on a
trip to Ayers Rock now also known as Uluru.
Discovering Wildlife with Sussex Wildlife Trust
Finding and watching wildlife is a really
healthy activity for both body and mind.
Wildlife can be beautiful, inspirational,
surprising and amazing.
There’s probably some wildlife close
to your home, but if you want to see a
greater variety why not plan a trip to a
nature reserve? There’s quite a few to
choose from locally, but the best for
easy access to see coastal wildlife is
at Rye Harbour in the eastern corner
of Sussex. Visit by train, car, cycle
or on foot at any time of year and
you will discover a network of paths
through several very special habitats
– saltmarsh, shingle, saline lagoons,
reedbed and grazing marsh. Many
paths and all five birdwatching hides
are wheelchair friendly. Winter has
large flocks of wading birds, ducks
and geese. Spring has more than 90
types of bird nesting. Summer sees
the amazing flowering of the shingle
beach. Autumn has an abundance of
butterflies, moths, dragonflies and
much more…
Add to this the many layers of historical
interest with old Winchelsea washed
away by the sea, Henry VIII’s Camber
Castle, Napoleonic Martello Towers,
This venture included a four bedroom
home and three vehicles. A limousine
granted the Official Standard to chauffeur
political and Royal dignitaries from the
airport to State functions. “Do you think
they will take kindly to a lady in peaked
cap and livery ?” was my enquiry. The
man, eager to sell, stated, “They will just
have to get used to a new idea.”
A 4 X 4 jeep for the ‘Bush whacker experience’ – camping
in the bush with billy tea and damper – requiring a tough
guy tour guide who would swing the billy can overhead
while the bread cooked in the coals. Lastly, a mini bus
for visits to an Aboriginal village.
Unfortunately this was too big for me to handle besides
the temperature being well over 40 degrees for many
months and the flies ! I wore a fly net over my face all
the time in Alice.
Back in Cairns while staying with friends they showed
me the Hurricane Information Brochure with which
all inhabitants have to be familiar. “Oops, what was I
contemplating !”
Advice was to fill your car with petrol and put rocks in
your wheelie bin to stop them blowing away, how to
Volunteer encourages others to put their Hands Up for Chestnut Tree
Gill Chapple, a volunteer for Chestnut
Tree, the children’s hospice for Sussex,
is asking the people of East Sussex if
they can spare a few hours of their time
to help raise vital funds and awareness.
Chestnut Tree care for over
300 children with life-shortening
conditions and their families,
including 55 in East Sussex, but they
know there are more that need their
help. As part of their Hands Up!
campaign Chestnut Tree have been
asking East Sussex residents to get
involved, by fundraising, participating,
donating or volunteering.
69 year old Gill has been volunteering
for Chestnut Tree for the past 6 years
and describes it as the ‘best thing ever.’
She heard about the charity through
a friend and got in touch to find out
how she might be able to help. A chat
with a member of the team resulted
in her taking on the role of Collection
Box Co-Ordinator, a role she has
enjoyed ever since. “It fits right into
my life” she says. “If I’ve got a bit of
spare time then I can organise some
collections and just pick the boxes up
when I’m passing.”
As well as her regular commitment
Gill also helps out on an ad-hoc
basis. “I receive a list of opportunities
by email and just do whatever I
fancy that fits around my life. I love
handing out the medals at the Night
to Remember midnight walk, but I
also help with raffles and tombolas,
man awareness stands and organise
monthly table games evenings. These
have proved a great success, good
fun and raised almost £600 in a year.
It sounds like a lot but really it isn’t,
I can pick and choose what I do and
there is never any pressure. If I can’t
do something it isn’t a problem.”
When asked why she volunteers Gill’s
face lights up. “I just feel so blessed
and this is my way of giving something
back,” she says. “It’s just really fun.
I love being with people and I meet
so many through volunteering with
Chestnut Tree.”
The cost of all care that Chestnut
Tree provides is over £3.5 million each
year, less than 7% of this is funded by
central government so the charity
relies heavily on fundraising to allow
it to continue to offer care to local
families.
Volunteers play a vital role in this. “I’m
always encouraging my friends and
family to put their Hands Up! and get
involved and now I want to extend that
to the whole of East Sussex. You can
really do as much or as little as you
want and the whole ethos at Chestnut
Tree is really friendly and nice.”
Anybody interested in volunteering
can get in touch with Chestnut Tree
Gardening tips for mid-late Winter
by Phoenix Gardening
If you’ve managed to make an early start on your
winter jobs mid - winter is a time for more indoor
jobs. So you can pick the sunnier days to venture
outside. Indoor jobs then, well we can order plants
and bulbs and write up some labels replacing any
faded ones, or just give it a tidy up. You can also
think about any improvements you’d like to make
in your garden, look at what’s worked and what
hasn’t, maybe you’d like to add some or more
seasonal colour. What can we do outside? Force
rhubarb, if you have some plants in the greenhouse
or conservatory give them a weekly check and take
off any dead leaves. If you have a pond and it starts
to ice over keep a patch of water open. One way to
do this is use a pan of boiling water and melt a hole
in the ice. One person I knew used to put a football
in the pond to keep a nice circle open.
Late winter if you haven’t got that digging done by
now better finish it off. Mind you on some heavy
wet clays and a hard frost you could find it rock
hard. One reason why on heavy soils it’s good to
get in early, if it’s not too wet. On the veg garden
you can apply manure or fertilisers if appropriate,
on beds and borders you can put down a layer of
mulch with some feed. Both let the winter gradually
take the organic matter into the soil along with the
goodness ready for the spring. Mulches won’t stop
perennial weeds but they stop a lot of annual weeds
Phoenix Gardening
All aspects of garden maintenance - pruning, planting beds & borders,
grass cutting, weeding, clearance, veg plots & allotments
plus shed maintenance & patio\deck cleaning
Reasonable rates - per hour\day\job. Always happy to quote.
coming up. Mid - Late winter is also a good time to
sow bedding plants for summer for a lot of tender
plants it would be too early to sow now even indoors
as they would come on too fast but those that need
a longer growing period like Begonia’s should be
fine. If in doubt check the seed packet.
THE FUTURE IS LOOKING BEAUTIFUL by Michele Duke
High tech and beauty don't
seem obvious bedfellows
but things are changing fast
in the beauty industry, and
technology is offering us
amazing new benefits. Women
are saying they don't want
surgery but they do want
to hold back the clock -
and it seems the men in
white coats are listening
to us. New innovations
are offering home-based
treatments with results
that could previously
only be achieved through
expensive, and often
painful, therapies. And
it couldn't be happening
at a better time. Women
of fifty, sixty and beyond want
to look youthful, attractive and
sexy. If science can give us
that, bring it on!
About nine months ago I
started hearing about a brandnew
skincare device that was
going to revolutionise the
skincare and beauty industry.
I have always believed that
once you’ve got a wrinkle the
only way to get rid of it is
with a very sharp knife - but I
couldn't ignore the hype that
was happening in the US. So
when it finally arrived here in
September I decided to test it
out. Just to prove that it really
didn’t work. In the interest of
research I used it on just one
side of my face. After six weeks
of a few minutes each day I saw
a dramatic improvement. In
fact it was so noticeable, I had
to start doing my entire face
before people started thinking
I’d had a stroke!
You might have seen some
little handheld 'wands' that use
sonic waves to provide a deep
cleanse. These can be great if
you suffer from blackheads or
breakouts and I recommend
them for certain skin conditions
- the Clarisonics range are
particularly well regarded. But
this new device from Arbonne
is completely different. It
uses ultrasound technology
to push your creams and
potions deeper into the skin
and ensure that the magical
ingredients can do their work
more efficiently. (Obviously, you
need skincare which actually
does something). The effects
are quite amazing.
Many people report an
immediate effect but the
effects are most dramatic over
a period of time. Some people
notice that fine lines can be
eliminated within just a few
uses. Deeper wrinkles appear
reduced and skin more refined
as you continue to use it. It's
hard to believe I know, but I've
seen it with my own eyes. And
around my own eyes too! My
husband was so impressed
with the results that he started
sneakily using it himself. One
woman watched her 75 year
old mother having a trial and
exclaimed 'I can see your face
getting smoother straight
away!' (She and her mother
bought one to share, which I
thought was rather lovely.)
Now, miracles don’t come
cheap but it is significantly less
than a course of facials, and
you get to use it forever. So far
I’ve not found anything similar
so it seems Arbonne have got
a head start but I fully expect
to see this market grow
quickly.
Of course I have added
this device to my beauty
range so others can get
their hands on it too
and you might think 'she
would say it's great, she
just wants to sell it'. In
fact it's the other way
round. I offer it because
I’m convinced it really
makes a difference. But
don't just take my word for it.
Try it for yourself at home for
a few days completely free of
charge. Or come along to one
of my fun beauty events and let
me show you the magic. Here's
to a wrinkle-free 2017!
I am Michèle Duke and I
help women look and feel
fabulous. Come along to one
of my make-up or skin care
workshops or a personal
styling session to learn how
to look your best. They’re
free, informal and lots of fun.
MIKE RAXWORTHY
After the Christmas and New Year celebrations,
parties and concerts, it’s going to be a quiet
January. It’s been hard to get in listings from most
venues as our copy date is a bit earlier this time due
to the Christmas break.
An interesting event coming up at St Mary in the
Castle on Hastings Seafront is a Film and Concert
to raise money to refurbish The Cyril and Lillian
Lifeboat, with the first Hastings lifeboat ever to have
an engine (More information in the piece below).
Known as The Ghost of Dunkirk, it made many return
journeys to Dunkirk saving an estimated 2,800 allied
servicemen. I asked Stevie Stone of Jiggery Pokery
to write a song about the boat, and with film maker
Sean Taberer I’ve made a 10 minute film about it’s
interesting story.
MIKE RAXWORTHY
The Premier of our short film and subsequent concert
is on Friday 20th of January 2017, and features the
excellent 3 piece Jiggery Pokery, Festival band
with
The Salts, Harmony One, Now and Then and the R X
MIKE Shantymen. RAXWORTHY
Tickets are £8.50 in advance from
Hastings Tourist Information Centre on the seafront or
£10 on the door. Doors open at 7pm.
The Harp in Devonshire Road, Bexhill is well worth a
visit. They are starting putting on bands on the last
Saturday of each month. January 28th they have
G ru n dy. I know these guys and they are probably
one of the oldest, or rather longest established,
bands from Hastings - they’ve been going since the
sixties so expect a night of great sixties and seventies
classics!
In the same road as The Harp you’ll find No48, who
host a wide range of entertainment and events to
suit all tastes. Most live music nights include a choice
of meal so it makes a good evening out, especially if
it’s for a special occasion.
On Friday Jan 27th I’d really recommend Sa m m y
Lou Hallam. Although she’s a ‘backing track’ act
she’s got a great voice and has chosen a fabulous
selection of Soul and Tamla Motown hits. Tickets
£8.75.
Also recommended are The Deep Sea Drivers on Fri
10th February. Proper pro band with a great groove
and a whole host of soul....not a backing track in
sight!! Tickets £8.75.
Also look out for Tom Fitzpatrick on Thursday 16th
March - he’s a class act! Tickets £15 with a meal
February in Hastings Old Town is very special. Fat
Tuesday is the one not to miss! It’s the Hastings
version of Mardi Gras and has grown over the last 4
years into a mega night of live music with just about
every bar and pub in town presenting at least 5 live
acts during the night. A whole host of musicians can
be seen rushing from one bar to the other to do a 20
minute stint. All venues are free entry.
It all ends in the after party at The Brass Monkey in
Havlock Road which does have an entry price....
tickets for this are available either at The Albion or at
Substance in Robertson Street.
"The Ghost of Dunkirk" returns home, 85 years old and tired.
Local residents, Dee-Day White and Tush Hamilton,
with finance provided by Skinners Sheds, have brought
The Cyril and Lillian Bishop lifeboat back to Hastings
to be restored. The boat has had a distinguished and
fascinating history, making it worthy of preservation.
The Cyril and Lillian Bishop
lifeboat, first arrived in Hastings
from the boat builders, J Samuel
White & Co of Cowes, Isle of Wight
in April 1931. She was crewed
by Will Curtis, Frank Martin, Fred
Doughty and now with her new
35hp petrol engine she needed a
mechanic, Bill Hilder.
During her service to Hastings in
the 30’s she saved 34 lives, but she is best known by her
well-earned nickname ‘The Ghost of Dunkirk’ when in
late May 1940 the Dunkirk evacuation needed shallow
draught vessels to make their way to Dover. The RNLI
was asked to send as many lifeboats as possible and
coxswain George Moon quickly called a crew together
consisting of Will Martin, Bodger Barton, Jumbo White,
Bill Hilder and finally Freddie Button.
On arrival at Dover George Moon tells us that all the
lifeboats were commandeered by the Royal Navy and
he and the rest of the crew travelled back to Hastings
by train. She went on to save an average of 850 British
and French servicemen per day and made several
journeys back and forth across the channel. It was
said that she appeared like a ghost amongst the smoke
and mist during the evacuations.
After doing her duty at Dunkirk the
boat was hosed out to remove the
vast quantities of sand from her
decks and a hole was found in her
bow, sand in her fore locker and
her mast head light was also full
of sand. Two bullet holes were
also found.
The story of the Cyril and
Lillian Bishop in her RNLI mode
continued until 1950 when the new Hastings Lifeboat,
the MTC arrived in Hastings. Then, like a ghost, she
disappeared into obscurity until 2015, when Dee-
Day and Tush transported the lost-lady back home to
Hastings.
Now she’s back, she needs a lot of attention, and
money, to restore her to her former glorious self!
Tagliatelle with Lemon Pepper Seafood - Recipe by Faz Razeen
Tagliatelle Italian pronunciation: Tagliolini
from the Italian Tagliare, meaning "to cut" is
a traditional type of pasta originated from
Emilia-Romagna and Marche regions of Italy.
Tagliatelle are broad, flat strips of durum wheat
pasta. Some Italian regions traditionally add
fresh egg to the dough too.
Tagliatelle is generally made as fresh pasta, the
texture is porous and rough, making it ideal for
any kind of sauce, generally made with beef,
veal, or pork, and now it has become very
trendy to enhance the sauces with seafood.
Ingredients (serves 4):
675g Mixed seafood
5-6 tsp lemon pepper oil
6 garlic cloves, finely chopped
2 sprigs of tarragon leaves
Dash of vodka
125ml medium white wine
450g tagliatelle
Vine tomatoes & lemon to garnish
Cracked black pepper & salt to season
Method:
Heat a deep frying pan or wok and add the
lemon pepper oil. When the oil is hot, add the
finely chopped garlic and seafood. Stir gently
for 1 minute. Add a cap full of vodka, white
wine, tarragon leaves, cracked pepper and salt.
Keep stirring gently for 1-2 minutes until the
seafood is cooked through.
Add pasta to a large pan of slightly salted
boiling water, return to the boil and cook for
7-9 minutes until tender, preferably al dente
texture. Drain thoroughly and add pasta to the
seafood mixture. Toss well, drizzle more lemon
pepper oil on top of the dish and serve with
your own garnish. Return to the oven for a
further 20 minutes to cook the leeks.
