Elderly couple
find key to feeling
young and healthy
Advertorial
Lester and Ruth Davey are avid believers that
regular exercise and physical activity can keep
you feeling young and healthy.
At 88 and 92 yearsof-age
and with no
infirmities, the couple
are prime examples of why
exercising during your senior
years is so important.
The couple have been
members at UniRec, the
University of Waikato’s
on-campus health and fitness
centre, for more than
15 years and are regulars at
the gym’s supervised LifeFit
resistance and cardio training
sessions which are held on
Tuesday and Friday mornings.
During the sessions the
pair work through their own
individualised training programmes
which were put
together by UniRec’s lifeFit
coordinator, Max Weinberg.
“We really enjoy coming
in and working out in the
supervised, group environment,”
says Ruth.
“Max and the rest of the
staff are really encouraging
and are always available to
provide support and advice if
we need it.”
On top of the two supervised
sessions, Lester aims
to fit in three extra individual
workouts each week and
Ruth attends a range of exercise
classes at the Hilda Ross
Retirement Village where
they now live.
“I try going into UniRec
to train at least five times a
week,” says Lester.
“I start by doing cardio
on the exercise bikes before
doing resistance training
on the machines. I think it’s
good to keep your heart and
respiratory system tuned up,
while also strengthening the
important muscles in your
arms and legs.”
As well as maintaining
good health and mobility,
the couple use their time at
UniRec as a way of catching
up and socialising with
friends.
“It’s like a fraternity and
that’s what we love about it,”
says Lester.
“All these people are our
friends, we’ll meet outside
for coffee and other social
activities and that social
aspect is an important part
of coming to the gym.”
The couple, who have
been married for 57 years,
believe that consistent regular
exercise is what has kept
them fit, healthy and active.
“I recently took quite a
nasty fall and amazingly
came away with no broken
bones!” says Ruth.
“This is why it’s been
so good for me to go to
UniRec and continue exercising
all these years.
“My body feels strong
and Lester and I have
much better health than
what we’d have if we weren’t
exercising as often.”
President’s report
Welcome to my last report for the year which
has been interesting and full of events.
Of note the mayoral
and council elections
which have just taken
place .
As I write this we don’t
quite know who will be our
mayor. As Andrew King the
mayor elect has only a slender
lead of nine votes with a
recount due any day.
Our membership has
remained steady with slightly
more than 200 unpaid members
and 1440 paid up members
to date. It would be nice
to think that we could hit the
1500 mark before Christmas.
Talking about Christmas I
look forward to seeing as
many of you as possible on
Monday, December 5 - contact
Nine important facts to
remember as you grow older
#9 Death is the number 1
killer in the world.
#8 Life is sexually transmitted.
#7 Good health is merely
the slowest possible rate
at which one can die.
#6 Men have 2 motivations:
hunger and hanky
panky, and they can’t tell
them apart. If you see a
gleam in his eyes, make
him a sandwich.
#5 Give a person a fish and
you feed them for a day.
Teach a person to use
the Internet and they
won’t bother you for
weeks, months, maybe
years.
#4 Health nuts are going
to feel stupid someday,
lying in the hospital,
dying of nothing.
#3 All of us could take a
lesson from the weather.
It pays no attention to
criticism.
#2 In the 60’s, people took
acid to make the world
weird. Now the world is
weird, and people take
Prozac to make it normal.
#1 Life is like a jar of jalapeno
peppers. What you
do today may be a burning
issue tomorrow.
Don’t ignore this message.
This is your only warning.
A friend sent this to me
-- must have mistakenly
assumed I was aging?
Important information flows through
Grey Power Monday morning seminars
For many years Hamilton Grey Power has held
Monday morning seminars in the Celebrating
Age Centre, except for the summer months
from December through February.
On one Monday morning
in May we hold
the Hamilton Grey
Power AGM.
On four Monday mornings
throughout the year we have
held a working bee for the
newsletter mailout. This year
we have had many interesting
speakers from within the
Hamilton community covering
a wide range of subjects.
We have also had Winston
Peters, NZ First Party leader
and James Shaw, co-leader
of the Green Party as guest
speakers.
This year the task of getting
speakers for our Monday
morning meetings has been
a very challenging one.
Your committee has decided
that next year we will have
one meeting a month with
a guest speaker. An additional
meeting will be held
each month which will be
in the form of a discussion
group and social event. More
detailed information will be
announced later.
As a matter of interest and
putting the above changes
into perspective, Tauranga
holds monthly meetings with
a speaker every other month.
Wellington Central holds
four meetings a year with a
speaker.
Dunedin now holds no
meetings at all as on average
only nine members were
attending.
We thank and appreciate
all members who regularly
attend our seminars in
Hamilton.
We hope many more members
will make the effort to
come and support our seminars
in 2017.
Our vice president, Jack
Thomas has been organising
the seminars for the past three
years. Unfortunately Jack has
been battling health issues for
the past three months.
We are seeking a volunteer
to either assist Jack in carrying
out his responsibilities or take
over from him as the seminar
coordinator. In the latter case
Jack would be happy to act in
an assistant role.
LET THE FUN BEGIN SMALL CAR BUT BIG ON FEATURES STYLISH SPARK BRAND NEW FROM ONLY $16490
Another view: we devalue
democracy at our peril
Parliament must make an urgent stand to
defend local democracy.
BY STEVE GOLDTHORPE
Our elected representatives
must not give the
Government sweeping
new powers, which would
allow the minister-of-the-day
to ride roughshod over local,
democratic planning processes.
The Government’s Resource
Legislation Amendment bill is
in the Select Committee stage,
which means that it is on track
to become law soon. Among
various proposed measures to
further castrate the Resource
Management Act, are radical
new executive powers set out
in Section 360 part D (http://
bit.ly/2aKUzzl). If enacted,
S360D would mean that the
Minister for the Environment
would have exclusive powers
to dictate the planning rules of
local authorities and to change
existing planning rules retrospectively.
The defining purpose of
the Resource Management
Act is to delegate responsibility
for planning matters to local
authorities. This means that
locally elected territorial councils
make planning rules that
best suit local circumstances.
That arrangement can
result in much time-consuming
debate over proposals, but that
is democracy in action.
The Resource Consent process
ensures that affected people
and local communities are
consulted about developments
and ultimately have the right
to elect local councils to implement
their wishes.
S360D would override that
local democratic process with
executive powers of a government
minister. That is a dangerous
and retrograde step for
New Zealand to take.
In 1947 Winston Churchill
said: “Democracy is the worst
form of government, except for
all those other forms that have
been tried from time to time.”
A recent example of democracy
is the Brexit referendum
in the UK, which to everyone’s
surprise resulted in a decision
to take the UK out of the
European Union. Despite severe
problems, the UK Government
is following the will of the people
to implement that decision.
To do otherwise would have
effectively transformed the UK
overnight from a democracy
into a dictatorship. The British
democratic government is
the model on which the New
Zealand system is founded. We
deviate from that model at its
peril.
We all want efficient and
effective decision-making. But
S360D is not needed to deliver
that. More importantly, the
powers the Government wants
Parliament to hand over would
expose local economies to
planning uncertainty.
The minister-of-the-day
could intervene at any time
with wide discretion. S360D
has been labelled a “constitutional
outrage” with good
reason.
History illustrates time and
again that executive power,
unmoderated by democracy,
leads to corruption and disaster.
It is enchanting to imagine
a benign, wise dictator capable
of acting solely in the best interests
of all but, in practice, history
tells us that that does not
happen for long. Instead any
dictatorship becomes captured
by vested interests or greedy
self-interest.
For example, there is great
pressure by overseas corporations
to establish Genetically
Engineered (GE) seeds and
crops in New Zealand. It would
be in their best interests not
stumbling.
Five of the exercises are
done seated while two are
done standing. For the seated
exercises, begin in a chair
that won’t move or slide
easily. Start slowly and only
proceed to the next exercise
once you’ve mastered or are
comfortable with the previous
one.
1. Toe taps on cup: Place a
plastic cup, opening down,
on the floor between your
feet. Starting with your right
leg, lift your leg up to gently
tap the top of the cup with
your toes, then place your
foot on the opposite (left)
side of the cup. Lift your right
foot back over the cup, and
set it down on the right side.
Repeat 10 times with each
leg, alternating sides.
2. Seated leg lifts: Lift your
right leg with the knee bent
at 90 degrees. Hold your leg
up with your foot about 6 to
10 inches off the floor for five
seconds. Repeat 10 times,
then switch legs and do 10
repetitions on the other side.
3. Seated march: While seated,
march your legs 20 times,
lifting your feet at least a few
inches off the floor. Be sure
to focus on maintaining good
posture while marching.
4. Hand-eye coordination
and balance: Place a plastic
cup (opening facing down) in
your right hand. Stretch your
arm out in front of you while
balancing the cup in your
open hand.
Slowly move your arm out
to the side and back to centre.
Repeat 10 times with
each arm. When you’re comfortable
with this exercise,
you may try doing it with
your eyes closed. Be sure to
remain seated, and if necessary,
have someone help
keep you upright, and/or be
ready to stabilise you if you
get dizzy.
5. Seated arm reach: While
seated, simultaneously lift
your right arm up high and
raise your left leg, knee bent.
Hold for a few seconds, then
alternate sides. Repeat for a
total of 20 times.
6. Side leg raise: Stand
behind a chair, with one
or both hands on the back
of the chair for support.
(Alternatively, keep one or
both hands on the counter).
Lift your right leg out to the
side. Repeat 10 times for each
leg. If you’re comfortable, do
the exercise without holding
on to the chair or counter.
7. Staggered stance
balance: Place your right foot
forward and your left foot
behind, then slowly shift your
balance from your front leg
to your back leg. Repeat 10
times, then switch leg positions,
placing your left foot
forward and your right foot
behind. If needed, do this
exercise standing next to a
chair, or between two chairs,
with the backs of the chairs
toward your body, so you can
grab on to them for support.
Hospice Waikato
Frankton Mega Store
Walking into the Hospice Waikato Frankton
Mega Store you could be forgiven if you
thought you’d just entered one of those highend
fashion and home decor outlets.
Yes, but no. Hospice
Waikato provides an
essential palliative care
service to people in the final
periods of their lives. Providing
this level of service costs a
lot and while the organisation
receives around 70 per
cent of its funding from the
Waikato District Health Board.
The remaining shortfall of $2.5
million is made up about 50/50
from donations from individuals,
businesses and charitable
groups, and the organisation's
network of shops.
Acting as 'Project Lead'
for the Frankton Mega Store
is former TVNZ personality
and marketing professional
Sharyn Cawood. With a small
crew of paid staff and about
650 volunteers, Sharyn, has
converted the former Mico
Wakefield premises into one of
Hamilton's foremost recyclers
and re-sellers of used goods.
The task began in 2014.
"The building had been
empty for 18 months. We got
the building in January and
opened in April. It took off
straight away. Our latest thing
is to open on Saturday. The
downstairs section is open
Thursdays and Saturdays.
We literally have traffic jams
because of the numbers of
people coming in.''
The largest of Hospice
Shops around Hamilton and
Waikato the Frankton store
provides a vital service giving
residents another option
when disposing of unwanted
goods or clearing out houses.
It attracts all sorts of people,
''hunters and gatherers,''
Sharyn calls them, some even
turn up several times a day.
The basement area
has been taken over by a
group of enthusiastic volunteers
who have divided it
up into sections catering to
such things as used electrical
equipment and linen, clothing
and duvets. There is a corner
catering to CDs, DVDs, vinyl
records and cassette tapes
run by a former owner of
Tracs Records. A retired bank
manager makes the shop up
to $2000 a month selling
on TradeMe. One chap even
comes into sort out donated
sewing machines.
All bedding and linen
is laundered and all electrical
equipment is checked for
function and safety. Those
items that don't make the
grade are processed for recycling.
Volunteers sort out
donated clothing, a huge
job Sharyn says, as the tide
of material is relentless and
quickly becomes a mountain if
there is any hold-up. Clothing
makes up 30 per cent of sales.
Some things are almost
impossible to get rid of,
"we've got 60 boxes of coffee
mugs, what do we do with
them,''? Sharyn asks.
The Hospice Mega
Store can be found on Lake
Rd, Frankton, opposite the
intersection with Somerset
St. Hospice Waikato also
operates shops in Hamilton
in Clyde St, River Rd, and
Victoria St, along with outlets
in Matamata, Morrinsville,
Cambridge, Te Awamutu and
is about to open in Thames.
Christmas Mincemeat Muffins
Although mince pies are nice, making their crust can be time
consuming, especially when there are other Christmas chores
waiting. Why not put spoonsful of mixture in muffins instead.
Serve these warm, and wait for the compliments.
Ingredients( For 12 medium muffins)
1 ¾ cups self-raising flour
¾ cup caster sugar
½ tsp salt
2 eggs
½ cup sour cream
½ cup milk
½ tsp rum, whisky or brandy essence
½ cup Christmas mincemeat
Method
1. Measure the first three ingredients into a large bowl, and stir
with a fork.
2. In another bowl, mix together with a whisk until smooth, the
eggs, sour cream, milk and essence of your choice.
3. Without overmixing, add the liquids. Coat 12 medium sized
muffin pans with non-stick spray and half fill the 12 pans
with the mixture. Using a dampened teaspoon, make a small
indentation on the top of each and into it put 1-2 teaspoons
of the mincemeat. Cover each with spoonful of the remaining
mixture trying to cover the enclosed mincemeat.
4. Bake at 200 degrees celcius for about 12-15 minutes or until
golden brown. The centres should spring back when pressed.
5. Serve warm, for Christmas day breakfast or brunch, or with
coffee at any time of the day over the holiday period. Serve
hot for dessert between Christmas and New Year and with
fresh berries and ice cream or whipped cream.
What would you do if you had a
travel insurance medical claim turned down?
Advertorial
Making a travel insurance medical claim may
seem like smooth sailing but sometimes help
may be needed in navigating the process.
Rome, Paris, Tokyo,
Sydney...then the bank
manager. If your travel
insurance medical claim is
given the ‘thumbs down’ then
the last destination on your
dream holiday may be one
you’d never thought you’d
make as your financial situation
heads South.
As one of New Zealand’s
pre-eminent insurance advocates
my job is to identify,
understand and then educate
people about market trends
that are potential ‘game
changers’ in the insurance
industry.
One that’s sitting firmly on
my radar is travel insurance
medical claims with a particular
focus on pre-existing
medical conditions.
This subject features in
all aspects of life and health
insurance. At claim time the
policy wordings determine
whether a payout is made or
not. Travel insurance is no
exception.
There is a global travel
‘boom’ that shows no signs
of abating. Record number
of cruise ships leaving our
shores, huge savings in airfares,
and the relative strength
of the New Zealand dollar are
all making Kiwis itching to
travel.
By definition this same
swell is seeing an upswing
in travel insurance medical
claims and the frustration,
and disappointment, of people
who receive a negative
response from their insurer.
Holiday interruptions due to
health issues are factors that
would-be travellers need to
seriously take on board from
the outset. In the rush to get
things done, and the excitement
of the upcoming holiday
dream, some things can come
unstuck, with travel insurance
medical cover being one.
The ideal situation is that
people treat making travel
insurance decisions with the
same attention to detail as
planning what to wear.
Policy wordings, for example,
vary significantly from
one insurer to the other. Each
will have their own version of
what constitutes a pre-existing
medical condition. You
therefore might not be covered
for what you assume you
are. Make time also to read
the policy exclusions. You
may be surprised what you
discover.
We can help if you get the
‘thumbs down’
If you, or someone you
know, have had a travel insurance
medical claim turned
down then a special service
I’ve created can be a life saver.
This offering allows me to
take the role of an independent
advocate whereby I support,
help and guide those
with declined travel insurance
medical claims through the
issues they’re facing.
When any claimant is given
a ‘declined’ decision, there is
always the element of doubt
that the decision given by the
insurer may have been unfair.
I provide the resource to
review that decision. This
achieves two outcomes. It
first of all gives you peace of
mind that the insurer’s decision
was fair and reasonable
in the particular set of circumstances.
There is also a sense
of closure as I can explain how
the insurer arrived at their
decision.
However, if it appears that
the decision is unjustified, I
can work with you to apply
for a review of the decline
claim decision. I can manage
this process from start
to finish and am committed
to delivering results. Once
you contact me there are no
lengthy time delays in achieving
answers. I’m effective
and draw upon my extensive
insurance and medical expertise
to analyse and investigate
issues surrounding the claim.
HAS YOUR TRAVEL
INSURANCE
MEDICAL CLAIM
BEEN DECLINED?
If it has, and you
want an independent
assessment as to
whether the decision
could be reversed,
then contact insurance
advocacy specialist
Sarah Kemp.
Equally if you are in the
process of making a claim I
can help to ensure it presents
a case in the best possible
way to optimise the chances
for success.
Despite the outstanding
National Superannuation
Technically, National
Scheme there are calls for it
Superannuation costs nothing
to be dismantled and replaced
because it is simply a transfer
by compulsory or privatised
payment or a reapportionment
superannuation.
of a percentage of GDP or
The chief reservation about
National Superannuation
is that the rapidly growing
number of superannuitants
6773600AA
a year at the peak of the demographic
bulge around 2050.
One economic commentator
recently opined that it is
highly unlikely that in the long
run New Zealand could afford
a superannuation scheme payable
to all individuals 65 and
over based on a minimum
of 65 percent of the average
percentage at that. Presently,
National Superannuation
“costs” around $11 billion a
year or just 4.3 percent of our
meagre $230 billion national
income.
But after tax the net cost
falls to a miniscule 3.7 percent
of GDP. Small change.
The demographic argument
that by 2050 there will be only
three workers to support each
superannuitant - the ratio of
retirees to the working age
population - is a complete nonsense.
Government revenue
derives from two sources.
These include the multiplicity
of taxes and charges of all
description such as income tax,
company tax, GST, withholding
tax, petrol tax and so on.
The second source is public
investments. The problem here,
of course, is that successive
governments since 1984 have
sought to divest income-earning
assets in pursuit of the
neoliberal ideal of small government.
Superannuitants, along
with everyone else, are also
taxpayers. For example, they
get thumped with Resident
Withholding Tax and pay GST
as well as tax on their superannuation.
A nation’s living standards
are determined by its national
income and the number of
people sharing that national
income.
Our Government predicts a
2.7 percent economic growth
rate over the next five years.
But if that growth rate was
sustained our $230 billion GDP
would double to around $460
billion by 2050.
The critical variable is population
growth. For example,
with no immigration and a stable
population of five million
- allowing for natural increase
- the predicted $25 billion cost
of National Superannuation,
at 5 percent of GDP, would
remain practically unchanged
as a percentage of national
income with the net cost
around 4.3 percent of GDP.
The larger the gap between
our GDP in 2050 and our
population the greater the
affordability of National
Superannuation and the higher
New Zealand’s living standards.
The New Zealand Treasury
has carried out extensive
research in this context.
Their researchers have
reached a broadly similar conclusion.
Treasury’s somewhat conservative
projection based on
the assumption that the current
parameters of National
Superannuation remain
unchanged is that the gross
cost will rise from 4.3 percent
to 7.9 percent of GDP by
2060, then decline.
Treasury’s analysis, however,
takes no account of enhanced
economic performance.
Accordingly, the claim that
it is highly unlikely that we
will be able to afford National
Superannuation in the future
does not stack up.
As the proponents of privatised
superannuation keep
telling us, face the facts and
do the maths. Indeed. Words
to live by.
Are you having problems
with your vision?
There are many causes of vision loss, and conditions of the eye
such as Cataract and Glaucoma, that we can diagnose and treat.
One specific disease called Macular Degeneration causes progressive
loss of vision in the centre of your visual field but leaving your
peripheral or side vision intact.
It is the leading cause of legal blindness and severe vision loss in New Zealand
(It does not result in total or ‘black’ blindness). One in seven New Zealanders
over the age of 50 years are affected. Smokers are three times more likely to
develop the disease and at least a decade earlier than non-smokers. People
with a family history of macular degeneration have a 50% chance
of developing the disease.
Warning… obesity epidemic already upon us
The Royal Australasian College of Surgeons
has issued a dire warning to Australians and
New Zealanders about their countries’ weight
problem, as alarming statistics highlight the
prevalence of the problem in young people.
This warning came as the
Obesity Surgery Society of
Australia and New Zealand
(OSSANZ) held its Annual
Conference in Sydney to discuss
some of the more difficult
areas of Bariatric Surgery and
as the Committee of Presidents
of Medical Colleges (CPMC)
prepared to convene a National
Health Summit on Obesity in
Melbourne in mid November to
discuss ways in which obesity
can be reduced.
According to projections,
by 2025, more than one in
four Australian children aged
between five and seventeen
will be considered overweight
or obese. This is up from one in
five at the turn of the century,
with a clear trajectory towards
a one in three figure.
The numbers are even worse
in New Zealand, where the
one in three figure will almost
be reached by 2025, when it
is expected approximately 32
percent of children will be considered
overweight or obese.
RACS Fellow and President
of OSSANZ, Mr George
Hopkins, said that the increase
in Australia and New Zealand
had reached crisis point.
“We often refer to the obesity
epidemic as a ticking time
bomb waiting to go off, but
the reality is it already has. You
don’t have to spend long in
any public shopping centre to
work out how widespread it
has become,” Mr Hopkins said.
“This is having flow on
effects for the rest of the health
system. There are strong links
between obesity and a myriad
of other health problems,
including type 2 diabetes, heart
disease and certain types of
cancers.”
“Furthermore, obese people
have a 50 -100 per cent
increased risk of dying prematurely
compared to people of
normal weight.”
Mr Hopkins works as a
gastrointestinal surgeon in
Brisbane, where he has performed
weight loss surgery on
thousands of patients.
He says there had been a
noticeable increase in the number
of obese patients requiring
surgery, but most startling has
been the rise in the number of
children.
“When I am required to
operate on younger people
it is usually after every other
weight loss strategy has failed.
Compared to when I first started
working as a surgeon it is
alarming how common it has
become for people to require
this sort of intervention at such
a young age.”
“With so many people now
overweight this is not just placing
an enormous strain on individuals,
but it is also creating
an untenable situation for our
health system. There is only
so much pressure it can take
before it collapses.”
“Childhood obesity is preventable,
but something needs
to change urgently. Weight loss
surgery has proven to be an
effective measure, but it should
not be viewed as a silver bullet
or a cure.
“We need to look right
across the spectrum for how
we are going to tackle this crisis,
from education, to nutrition, to
promoting more active lifestyles.
Those figures are damning,
clearly what we are doing at the
moment isn’t working.”
DAVID BENNETT
MP FOR HAMILTON WEST
Hamilton has long been
referred to as ‘The City
of The Future’. Now,
more than ever, we are seeing
what a city of future
looks like, embracing all that
it means. A great example
being that Hamilton was
the first connected Ultra-
Fast Broadband (UFB) city
in New Zealand, the very
first city to benefit from the
Government’s $1.6 billion
UFB rollout.
Hamilton based company
Ultrafast Fibre, was formed in
order to facilitate this important
infrastructure rollout
across the Waikato, Bay of
Plenty and Taranaki, a business
which is growing as the
rollout progresses across the
country has a positive impact
in perpetuity for Hamilton.
Minister for Communications
Amy Adams recently confirmed
that almost all
non-standard UFB residential
connections will be
free until December 2019,
www.national.org.nz
which essentially increases
the accessibility of UFB and
allows the Government to
fulfil its commitment to making
residential UFB connections
free.
In any developing city, having
fast, reliable access to the
internet is a valuable piece
of infrastructure – one which
certainly has the potential to
add to the value of property.
Using communication
applications like skype and
facetime – the world’s borders
shrink. I was told of a
recent wedding, the bride’s
London-based grandmother
was beamed into the room
on a television, so that she
too was able to enjoy the ceremony
and celebration of the
day. We can see and speak
to family members who live
in other towns or countries
using that same technology,
all made possible through a
sound, speedy internet connection.
Our businesses certainly
benefit from being able to
seamlessly connect to trading
hubs across the world, and
many healthcare providers
and social assistance agencies
are starting to use applications
to allow consumers
the opportunity to access
information, update details
and monitor progress – in
some cases, book an appointment,
all from the comfort of
your lounge chair.
The challenge now is to
think about how Hamilton can
further use UFB to enhance
the future of our city.
Tinting your glass can
also reduce the effects of
glare, which affects many
people at all times of the
year, and is especially popular
in rooms where there
are computer and television
screens. As homes are now
being built closer together,
tinted glass can also provide
extra privacy from neighbours.
Acorn Glas-Tint also offers
security film, a clear film
that is placed over existing
windows to prevent it from
shattering if it is broken.
This is a must for households
with small children, or
homes with vulnerable glass
Summer planting
Isn’t it great to see some sun, it’s been a
long time coming. With still a little rain and
the warmth from the sun plants are now
beginning to grow.
As the days get longer
there is more time to
enjoy the garden. There
is an abundance of colour and
variety available at this time of
year. Lavenders in pinks and
mauves, nemesias, hydrangeas
and daisies are all blooming
beautifully.
Annuals make a great show
in garden beds, pots and
hanging baskets. Impatiens,
petunias, marigolds, begonias,
lobelia, cosmos, zinnias are
all available at Amber Garden
Centre along with a lot more
to choose from.
Get your hanging baskets
planted now if you want them
flowering for Christmas.
Growing your own vegetable
garden gives you so
many choices and saves you a
considerable amount on food
costs. When planting the vegetable
garden remember to
stagger the planting at two to
three weekly intervals to get a
constant supply right through
summer and into autumn.
Feed and mulch your strawberries
to give you large juicy
berries and keep them up off
the soil to stop them rotting.
Tomatoes need lots of sun,
water and food. Tui Tomato
Fertiliser contains all the nutrients
specific for tomatoes, with
added potash which enhances
fruit and flower production
(rather than leafy growth).
For container grown tomatoes
use a soluble fertiliser like Tui
Novatec Premium Fertiliser.
Always water fertiliser in well
after application, avoid getting
water on the foliage.
When watering the vegetable
garden it is better to give
it a good deep soaking 2 to 3
If you don’t have a lot of
room in the garden to plant
vegetables, they grow well in
pots and make a great display
on the patio. A collection of
herbs and salad mixes near
the kitchen door is very handy.
Plant in a good quality potting
mix that has good water holding
granules and slow release
fertiliser like our Thoroughbred
Potting mix and your plants
will get the perfect start. Just
remember to liquid feed and
water regularly.
Remember to give your
fruit trees, camellias and roses
some fertiliser now to keep
them going through the hot
summer months. They will also
need another feed in autumn.
60 years. They had shared
it was time that he should
When he opened it, he found
two crocheted dolls and a stack
of money that came out to
about $95,000.
contents.
She replied: 'When we were
told me the secret
of a happy marriage was to
never argue. She told me that
if I ever got angry with you,
I should just keep quiet and
crochet a doll.'
The little old man was so
moved; he had to fight back
tears. Only two precious dolls
were in the chest. She had
only been angry with him two
times in all those years of
living and loving. He almost
burst with happiness.
'Honey,' he said. 'That explains
the doll, but what about all
of this money? Where did it
come from?'
'Oh!' she said. 'That's the
money I made from selling the
other dolls.'
