Mariquita Book - mk2.5

We had a lot of new faces in the regatta crews in 2015. Very good
sailors but not Mariquita sailors. The modern sailors know how to sail
and race better than us to be honest. But it’s not the same thing on a
classic – what’s a topping lift … what’s a jigger?! They don’t know the
terminology but then again it doesn’t take them long to pick it up. It’s
probably easier for them to learn the classic way than the other way
around but it’s a challenge for everyone. The loads are much bigger …
we don’t use power winches. On a modern boat the next manoeuvre
is one click away. On Mariquita it’s about the strength of the crew as
opposed to systems so everything takes longer. It’s a big learning curve.
