SUMURUN
Sumurun took us apart on the first day of
the Westward Cup. It was a light day with
a lot of windward work against the tide
and she walked all over us. She’s a long,
thin yacht with a modern Marconi rig
so she can point closer to the wind than
we can in Mariquita. She arrived at the
first weather mark off Norris Castle way
ahead of us and we all thought Sumurun
was going to be a formidable competitor.
Although she sailed well upwind we
managed to haul her back in on the
downwind legs. While Sumurun was
doing gybe angles Mariquita was running
dead downwind to the leeward mark. I
have lost count of the times our downwind
speed got us out of jail this season.
