John’s Jottings
Good evening everyone, welcome to Woodstock.
Our visitors this evening are Walton Casuals. Welcome to their Players, Officials and Supporters
and this evenings match officials. A welcome also to representatives of Hidsons of Rainham
who are sponsoring the game. Hidsons are dealers for Kia. Vauxhall, Citroen and Mitsubishi.
Over the years Hidsons have given us fantastic support so if you are after a new or used car
please do consider having a look at what Hidsons have to offer.
Walton Casuals started November badly with a 4-1 defeat against Chipstead. They certainly
made up for it though with a string of impressive results since then which includes a 3-1 win
over Hythe Town, a 4-2 defeat of Guernsey and a resounding 6-1 win at Godalming Town. On
Saturday, they continued their good form with a 3-0 defeat of Horsham to move up to 7 th in the
table.
My opinion is that this season league positions count for nothing Anyone can beat anyone else
in this division. Some of our best performances have been against “big budget” teams. The likes
of Greenwich Borough and Hastings United. At Greenwich we ran them ragged in the first half,
racing into a three goal lead. At Hastings our display against a very good side (second best side
we have played with Tooting & Mitcham being the best). Speaking to the Hastings secretary last
week he said that we were the best side they have played this season which is a fantastic compliment.
The difference from being at the top to being “also rans” is consistency. Since our
match at Herne Bay we have hit some consistency, unbeaten in five, winning four of them. We
have to go back to August/September of last season to find the last time we had such a good
run. We actually won five games in a row so let’s hope we can emulate that tonight but it’s going
to be difficult against a team with an equally good record.
The last home game was against an East Grinstead side who had signed three new players just
before the match – two with football league experience. They were certainly up for it but so
were we. After conceding territory for the first twenty minutes or so we gradually came into it.
Both sides had chances but we probably had the best of them. As the game went into time added
on it looked it was a well-earned point each, that was until Tom Carlse leapt up to head a
90 th minute winner. That is the third late late winner we have scored recently. This was another
very entertaining game that I am sure you all enjoyed.
On Saturday, we visited Lewes, another team who are on a good run, unbeaten in 10 matches
out of 11. If it was not for two dubious decisions by the referee (a soft penalty and a free kick
that never was) we would have come away with a deserved three points. As it was we had to
settle for a draw – something we would have settled for before the game.
Our longest serving player, Hicham Akhazzan, has been allowed to dual register with SCEFL
side Lordswood to get match practice. His first match for them was in the Kent Senior Trophy
win over Rusthall.
We provided a tree at the Christmas tree festivals at St Michaels Church in the High Street and
at Tunstall Church? Thanks to David Cummings for decorating the Tree at St Michaels for us.
The first ever Brickies lottery £500 winner draw should have taken place last Tuesday at the
ground but due to the postponement of the game it will now take place at our next Saturday
home game which is against Chipstead on December 17 th . To join the Brickies lottery see John
Cooper or myself. You can also download a form from our web site.
Enjoy the game!
From the Programme Editor
Hello everyone. Well we are on cloud 9 at the moment with just 1 defeat in the last 8 games—
not bad going!!
The last couple of games have been great games for the neutral but nail biting stuff for the
faithful. But one thing about this side of late is that they try right up to and beyond the 90
minutes and I think they know how much this is appreciated by the fans.
Hicham Akhazzan is now out on loan to Lordswood
to help him regain his fitness and his debut for them
last week helped them defeat Rushtall in the Kent
Reliance Trophy second round.
I see that one of our past managers, Gary Abbott,
has just been sacked by Fisher who are languishing
at the bottom of the South East Counties League. I’m
fairly sure that Gary’s budget at Fisher was miniscule
so he had an uphill task. This piece of news gives
me a reason to tell you something of the Current
Fisher FC. The older fans will remember Fisher Athletic
who played us in the FA Cup back in September
2007 when Justin Edinburgh, now Gillingham’s manager
of course. They swept us aside (my words in
the match report at the time) with a 7-1 victory. To
make it worse (could it have been worse!) Sky Sports
had selected the match as their FA Cup match of the
day and continued to show all of the goals throughout
the next day!!
Mark Lovell, who may well feature in Herne Bay’s
team today, and Lee Browning, were both in the
Brickies team that Day. Fisher Athletic F.C were
playing in the Conference South at the time, groundsharing
at Champion Hill Stadium, the home
of Dulwich Hamlet. They were wound up by the High
Court, after failing to repay their debts, on 13 May
2009. but on 29 May 2009 a new club, Fisher F.C.,
was formed. The new club was elected to the Kent
League for the 2009–10 season but have struggled
for much of that time.
Just a short note about our visit to Lewes. I noticed
that their assistant manager Ross Standen was our goalkeeper back in season 2001/2 when
Lewes beat us in an FA cup replay !
Finally the Sittingbourne Heritage Centre has produced an excellent calendar featuring old pics
of Sittingbourne, they are available from the club at £5. Please see me or John to purchase one.
Walton Casuals History
Walton Casuals Football Club was formed in July 1948, owing its early origins to members of the
Armed Forces who formed a Sunday side, having played only friendly fixtures throughout the
1946-47 season.
The club commenced its inaugural season in Division 1 of the Surrey Intermediate (Central)
League, playing at Elm Grove Recreation Ground. Soon gaining promotion to the Premier Division
during the 1952-53 season, Walton Casuals later finished as runners-up on three occasions:
1954-55, 1956-57 and 1964-65. With the disbandment of the Surrey Intermediate
(Central) League in 1965, the club opted to move to the league’s Western Section for three seasons.
However, in 1969 Casuals joined the new Surrey Senior League, during which they moved into
their recent home at Franklyn Road. Just two years later the Stags become founder members of
the Suburban League, and after one season at Walton & Hersham’s Stompond Lane, moved into
Liberty Lane at Addlestone for eight seasons. Nonetheless, they soon returned to Franklyn
Road – which had remained host to the reserve squad – while playing in the Surrey Combination
League.
Walton Casuals scooped their first major honour during the 1982-83 season, as manager Kim
Harris guided the club to become champions of the Southern section of the Suburban League,
while also setting a league record of an impressive 23 games unbeaten. Casuals could only
manage a second place finish the following year through, falling to Sutton United.
The 1986-87 season produced another impressive display as the Stags reached the Surrey
Premier Cup Final, but lost to Croydon before falling into a steady decline in subsequent years –
regularly finishing in the bottom two of the Suburban League.
After 21 years of competing in the Suburban League, the club decided to join the Surrey Premier
League in June 1992 in order to compete in the pyramid system. Following a year of consolidation,
major changes paved the future of the club at Franklyn Road – notably with the reappointment
of Kim Harris as first-team manager, who had recently enjoyed a successful spell at Hersham
RBL.
With the club expanding into both Sunday and youth football sides in the coming seasons, the
club saw greater success in the following years. Lifting the Surrey Premier League Challenge
Cup during the 1993-94 season, defeating Holmesdale after a replay, the club also finished as
runners-up to Chobham in the league just one year later. Despite losing to Vandyke in the Surrey
Premier League Challenge Cup at the second time of asking, the club was promoted to the
Combined Counties League in the summer.
However, the progression proved to be a challenge for Casuals. The first four seasons produced
treacherous results, and the 1996-97 season saw the side finish bottom of the table. Fortunately,
relegation was avoided with the Combined Counties League exercising is prerogative to maintain
a minimum number of clubs in the Premier Division. February 1999 produced colossal developments
for the club, as with the help of local charities, the installation of floodlights at Franklyn
Road was completed – a major step for ground requirements should they progress in the
league system.
The appointment of Mick Sullivan and Garry Clark as joint managers in the summer of 1999
bought a dramatic improvement in terms of results. As well as a 5th place finish in the league,
the club won the League Cup in 2000, beating Viking Greenford 4-2 in the final at Farnborough.
The following season was also a relatively successful one, with a placing of 7th in the table and
another appearance in the League Cup Final, beaten on this occasion by double-winners Cove 3
-0 at Woking.

Walton Casuals History—Cont
Although 2002-03 proved a disappointment with the club finishing in a lowly 18th spot, the
seeds of success had been sown with Spencer Collins taking over as first-team manager in
November 2002. As a team capable of much better things slowly begun to take shape, ex-
West Ham United and Fulham great Tony Gale was installed as Director of Football.
After more team-building in 2003-04 and a big jump up the table to finish in 7th spot, the club
took the Combined Counties by storm the ensuing season, finishing an impressive 26 points
clear at the top of the table.
After initially failing an FA ground inspection, the club launched a successful appeal and
achieved their dream of promotion to Ryman League Division One for 2005-06. Finishing the
maiden season in 15th place, subsequent seasons saw the club regularly finish in the bottom
half. In 2009-10 the club achieved its best run in the FA Cup reaching the 3rd Qualifying
round, before losing to Staines Town.
The club appointed Neil Shipperley manager in the summer of 2010 and managed to finish in
12th place, at the time the Stags’ record league finish in history. During early 2011 the club
opened a new clubhouse and new changing facilities. Mick Sullivan returned at the helm in
October 2011 following the resignation of Neil Shipperley, but was sacked a year later with ex-
Farnborough, Crawley Town and Stevenage manager Danny Carroll taking the reins.
Following a reprieval at the end of the 2012-13 season despite another imminent relegation,
ex-Kingstonian assistant Mark Hams was instated as manager, with his brother Neil joining as
assistant manager. Within their first season, the Hams brothers led the team to a club record
league finish of 9th place. However, after struggling in their second season, Hams and the
club decided to part their ways after nine league defeats without a single point. Players Liam
Collins and Simon Huckle took up temporary coaching roles at the club, before being handed
the permanent opportunity in November 2014. Results improved considerably, and with Liam
Collins opting to take the role permanently, soared up the table to avoid a likely relegation.
Achieving a historic double over Walton & Hersham for the first time in the club’s history, an
18th placed finish defied expectations and saw much improvement in the latter half of the
campaign.
Anthony Gale too over at the beginning of season 2015/16. Off the field the clubs ground at
Waterside is having a makeover and so they have been on the road now residing at Whyteleafe,
previously it was Merstham.
Ryman League Div 1 South
Sittingbourne 4 Hythe Town 0 Att 143
If Sittingbourne’s players were getting ratings out of 10 for this
performance, then every one of them would have got at least
an 8.
This stunning win was a great reward for teamwork, with each
player not only doing their job, but tackling bravely, running
hard and – simply – playing for each other.
Hythe came back strongly but for all the probing
of Alfie May, who looks to be on the brink of a deserved career
in League football, they couldn’t find a way through
Sittingbourne’s determined defence.
And the Brickies made it 2-0 just before half-time when Welch,
enjoying himself against his old club, was fouled just outside
the area. Lee lined up the free-kick and hit it perfectly over the
wall and inside the near post for a terrific first goal of the season.
The normal reliable suspects like Jono Richardson and Simon
Overland put in their usual stints, but it was others like the
outstanding Sam Welch, Conrad Lee and Jordan Gallacher who
all put in possibly their best performances of the season.
Well done to all the Sittingbourne players, and well done to
them for serenading their loyal singing supporters at the end.
Any win over a competent and successful team like Hythe has
to be enjoyed, but this one even more so as it was so emphatic
– and some revenge for that 5-0 FA Cup replay hiding
Hythe were so happy to give them less than three months ago.
Victory leaves Sittingbourne just four points off a play-off place
but the trick is to cash in on it. When they beat Ramsgate by
the same score earlier this season, and midway through last
season as well, they followed it by losing the next few games.
The same attitude and commitment showed here needs to be
maintained, for this was the standard Sittingbourne have now
set themselves for the rest of the season.
They made two changes from the team that won at Godalming
in the previous game, Tom Brunt and the injured Dan Parkinson
dropping out and new signing Anthony O’Connor and Gallacher
coming in.
But there were positional changes as well, with Lee moving
into the central midfield role vacated by Stefan Wright’s suspension
and making an excellent contribution.
Sittingbourne started positively against a Hythe team who
have done very well against them in recent years, and took the
lead on 18 minutes with a terrific goal, built up at a high tempo.
Steven Ita played in Gallacher and he cut his cross back for
ex-Folkestone striker O’Connor to finish calmly to make it a
debut to remember.
Hythe made a double substitution at half-time, looking determined
to get something back from the game in pursuit of a
play-off place, but it was Sittingbourne who scored again at
the start of the second half.
Welch cut in from the right, dummied his marker and picked
out Ricky Gundry in the box to control and score from 12 yards
out.
Overland made a couple of good saves but no way were-
Sittingbourne in a mood to let a three-goal lead slip, and
Hythe’s day was summed up when May hit a shot that flew
straight out of the ground.
And Sittingbourne rounded off a performance to remember
with a fourth goal, teenager Jake Embery scoring for the second
successive Saturday, this time just four minutes after coming
on. Fellow young sub Josh Wisson set him up with a terrific
through pass and Embery, who looks like he’s loving his football
at the moment, simply crashed his left-foot drive through
the keeper.
What a glorious finish to the game and another scalp of a top
team for Sittingbourne to follow wins over Greenwich Borough
and Corinthian Casuals. Happy days.
Sittingbourne: Simon Overland, Sam Welch, Tom Carlse (Tom
Brunt, 70 min), Danny Rumbol, Jono Richardson, Joe Loft,
Ricky Gundry, Conrad Lee, Steven Ita (Josh Wisson, 66 min),
Anthony O’Connor (Jake Embery, 79 min), Jordan Gallacher.
Subs not used: Hicham Akhazzan, Dan Tanner.
Ryman League Div 1 South
Ramsgate 1 Sittingbourne 2 Att 134
A second successive 2-1 away win, a third win
on the bounce, and up to seventh in the Ryman
South table.
Sittingbourne are flying in November and with
more than half the season still to go why
shouldn’t they dream about challenging for a
play-off place.
Not that this win was easy. Far from it, as
Ramsgate belied their lowly place in the league
and gave Sittingbourne a hell of a run for their
money.
Sittingbourne normally just have to turn up at
this ground to take home the three points, but
this was different though in the end it was a first
double of the season for the Brickies having
beaten Ramsgate 4-0 at home.
Not surprisingly after Saturday’s superb 4-0 win
over high-fliers Hythe Town, Sittingbourne kept
an unchanged team with Ramsgate fielding
three‘old boys’ – George Crimmen, Ollie Gray
and Luke Girt.
Away games on a Tuesday night often mean a
couple of late-ish arrivals and this one was no
different, so no wonder Sittingbourne made a
sluggish start.
And within two minutes they were a goal down,
though late arrivals or not it was a terrible goal
to concede.
They pushed forward for a throw-in up the left
touchline but Ramsgate gained possession and
broke quickly. Chapman ran from halfway, receiving
a lucky bounce back to him when he
tried to lay it off, and planted the ball in the far
corner.
Sittingbourne took an age to settle down and
get into the game against a lively Ramsgate
side buoyed by their early goal.
It was all of 39 minutes before attacking fullback
Tom Carlse forced a corner with a great
cross and when he got up in support again a
couple of minutes later he was brought down as
he raced into the area.
It must have been a penalty as Ramsgate managers
Jim and Danny Ward didn’t protest vociferously,
and Steven Ita comfortably
slotted home the equaliser. But it ended his
game as he pulled a muscle and had to go off.
The second half was much better by Sittingbourne
and again, as on Saturday, it was
their pace and tempo that the opposition found
hard to handle.
The hard-working Anthony O’Connor was only
prevented from scoring from about a yard out
by a dramatic save by keeper Watkins early in
the half.
And it was O’Connor who played a key role in
the winning goal after 79 minutes. He’d twice
controversially been flagged offside when other
Sittingbourne players raced past him onto the
ball from onside
positions, but this time the flag didn’t go up. And
when he crossed low from the left, the unlucky
Wheatley could do no more than divert it past
his own wrong-footed keeper.
Sittingbourne refused to sit on a one-goal lead
and sub Jake Embery twice blasted over,
Hicham Akhazzan had a couple of great chances
he would have been disappointed not to
score from, and Sam Welch raced clean
through on a mighty break from end of the pitch
to the other only for Watkins to save well in a
one-on-one.
Ramsgate frantically pushed forward in a helterskelter
finish and it needed all of skipper Jono
Richardson’s experience to steady the ship and
keep them out, with great support from Danny
Rumbol and excellent goalkeeping when called
upon by Simon Overland.
It was a tough battle at times, nowhere near as
smooth and smart as the win over Hythe, but
it’s three more confidence-boosting points for
Sittingbourne and a reward for an awful lot of
hard work they put into this game.
Dorking Wanderers are going great guns this season lying second in the table, two points off
the top spot. They have had a couple hiccups in form of late losing at home to Three Bridges
and then drawing with Ramsgate, but they came storming back on Saturday with a 4-2 victory
at Hastings Utd.
The club was only formed in 1999 and started playing in the Crawley and District Football
League. After their first season in the Crawley league they switched to the West Sussex Football
League and immediately won the Division Four championship. The club made further progress
the following season when they finished as runners-up in Division Three gaining promotion
to Division Two. The club climbed the league ladder again two seasons later in the 2003–
04 campaign when they finished as champions of Division Two. The 2005–06 season saw the
club clinch promotion to the top division of the West Sussex league when they finished third in
Division one. In their second season in the Premier Division the club finished as champions
and gained promotion to Division Three of the Sussex County Football League. The promotion
was made possible by the club moving to their current home of West Humble Playing Field,
during the successful 2006–07 campaign.
The club spent the next four seasons in Division Three of the County League, and gained promotion
as champions at the end of the 2010–11 campaign. ] The next season saw the club finish
third and qualify for promotion to Division One, however the league denied them entry to
the division as their ground was considered not suitable for that division. However the club appealed
against this decision to the F.A., and they overruled the decision after an independent
ground grading visit confirmed that the ground reached the necessary standards for Division
One football.
In 2015, Wanderers were promoted to the Isthmian League Division 1 (South). The club has
become the dominant football club in Dorking and the surrounding areas as their six promotions
in eight years has caused major interest. In March 2016, Wandererers in effect rescued
their local rivals Dorking F.C. from bankruptcy as they created the Dorking Football Alliance.
This means that Dorking F.C. will play at Westhumble next season and that Wanderers will
move to the renovated Meadowbank Stadium in the centre of the town for season 2017/18 after
they proposed £4 million development set to commence on the site.
WE’RE quick to criticise top level footballers in this country for being out of touch and forgetting
their roots.
I suspect the truth is very different and most will appreciate their background and the people
who shaped their careers.
Unless you’ve been living on Mars, Jamie Vardy’s story will be a very familiar one - and now
he’s trying to find his successor.
The former Stocksbridge Park Steels, FC Halifax and Fleetwood Town striker launched his V9
Academy back in the summer before he went to the European Championships with England.
Since then thousands have applied for the chance to attend a five-day training camp at Manchester
City’s Etihad Campus at the end of the season.
It’s open to all players from Step 1 down and the academy’s scouts have been out scouring the
country for potential talent to take part in the competition.
There is also a six-part Sky Sports documentary that is following the whole process.
Some clubs - and you can understand their view - will possibly be sceptical, but last week the
V9 Academy showed how serious they are by unveiling their first three signings on Leicester
City’s pitch.
Eastleigh midfielder Luke Coulson is the talk of Non-League at the moment. The former Manchester
City man joining up is a big coup. He would have been with England C in Estonia had it
not been for the Spitfires’ FA Cup replay.
AFC Telford keeper James Montgomery was on international duty and he’s also signed up,
along with Tamworth’s in-form striker Danny Newton.
All three met Vardy last week before my colleague Jon Couch sat down with the Premier
League winner to talk about life before superstardom.
“Non-League is where I come from and I’ve still got mad fond memories from when I was
there,” said Vardy, who won the Conference title in 2011-12.
“
I wanted to give something back. I still talk to quite a few of my old team-mates from every club
I’ve been at, which is nice because you don’t want to forget where you’ve come from.
“I always pinch myself no matter who I’m playing against. I’ve managed to work my way up the
ladder and get to the top, which is an unbelievable achievement.”
Vardy isn’t a one off. There is more talent written about in our paper every week. If Vardy’s
venture can help unearth more, that really would be giving something back.
