Manchester Metropolitan
University
July 2016

We are a great modern university,
in a great global city, here to make an
impact on Manchester, our nation
and beyond, with a driving ambition to
discover and disseminate knowledge,
and make higher education as accessible
and beneficial to all those with the
passion and ability to succeed.
We work closely with our city, with
business, the community and our
academic peers – locally, nationally and
internationally – to be inventive and
creative, generate great opportunities,
and enable our students, colleagues
and everyone whose lives we touch to
make an impact.

Professor Malcolm Press
Vice-Chancellor
We take young people
who’ve got vision,
and ambition, and we
allow them to realise
their potential, to
achieve their personal
best, to hit the goals
that they aspire to hit.
Welcome to Manchester Metropolitan
University, one of the UK’s most ambitious,
exciting and inspiring universities, in one
of the world’s most creative, energetic and
inventive cities.
Here, we are setting out both the current
reality of our university and our vision for
its future.
You’ll get a sense, too, I hope, of our energy
and drive, sharing the inventive and
entrepreneurial spirit of Manchester, and
its many different civic, economic, ethnic,
artistic, scientific and cultural communities.
And finally, at the heart of our university,
is our desire to empower and enrich the
world of knowledge and the lives of those we
work with and teach, doing all we can to
help students and everyone at the University
realise their personal and professional
aspirations and ambitions.
This is our time.
Lord Peter Mandelson
Chancellor
Manchester is a great
national city that is
now on the global map.
It’s the heart of the
northern powerhouse
concept.
Manchester is a major hub for innovation
and has the biggest creative and digital
sector in the UK. Combined with the close
proximity of MediaCityUK, this is
attracting key players from the creative,
digital and media industries to the city.
The University works with the creative
industries in a number of ways,
placing us at the centre of the region’s
cultural output.
Manchester has
always been a hugely
important city in
Britain, with its roots
in finance, textiles,
engineering, the best
of industry.
The buildings are first
impressive. We are in a
fantastic city but it’s the
people that really make
the difference. Professor Malcolm Press Vice-Chancellor
A leading, modern university with a
history of higher education since 1824.
Our buildings have won more
Royal Institute of British
Architects (RIBA) awards in
the last five years than any
other university.
Following a £350 million investment,
we have created a world-class learning
environment with some of the best
teaching and learning facilities in the UK.
Manchester Metropolitan is a great
modern university, in a great global city,
and we share the same drive and spirit
to explore, create, invent, re-invent and
make the world take notice.
Award-winning
Globally respected
Making an impact
I was knocked out
by how ambitious
everyone was, the drive
that was in the place –
‘We’re going to do this,
achieve that, build
the other’. Lord Peter Mandelson Chancellor
We try to embody everything that
Manchester is – it’s a city that’s cutting
edge, creative, innovative, known for
firsts – those are things we want to embed
in our students.
We are sector leading with new degree
apprenticeships. We work with global
employers HSBC, GSK, Network Rail,
HMRC, and with some of these employers
we’ve got exclusive relationships.
The University’s Manchester Fashion
Institute showcases world-class academic
programmes and professional
connections that enable our students
and staff to raise their profile, consult
with the industry’s biggest brands and
collaborate on ground-breaking
research projects.
We have an integrated and diverse sport
offer, founded on academic excellence
in unique learning environments and
complemented by partnerships with
leading sports organisations. All of this
right here in Manchester – a great
global sporting city.
The University has established
partnerships with Manchester City
Football Club, being the Higher Education
partner for Manchester City Women’s
Football Club; and in basketball, we have
a unique partnership with Manchester
Giants to provide scholarships.
Our Business School has recently been
awarded the prestigious international
AACSB accreditation – the hallmark of
excellence in business education. This
places us in the top 5% of business
schools worldwide.
Examples of recent key achievements
by our staff and students
Here are the themes
which drive Manchester
Metropolitan and make
us the bold, ambitious,
creative and innovative
university we are today.
Place
A university with all the drive and spirit of a great global city
You can feel the energy. In the place.
In the buildings. In the students and staff.
You can sense the determination to
succeed. Manchester Metropolitan is a
great modern university, in a great global
city, and we share the same drive and
spirit to explore, create, invent, re-invent
and make the world take notice.
Our students brought an alternative reality to
life as part of a pioneering exhibition of a vision
of Manchester that was never realised, using
town plans from the 1960s. Five teams of Masters
students from the Manchester School of
Architecture worked from detailed maps, plans,
sketches and archival sources to design and
build 3D models of parts of the city navigated
using game controllers.
Ambition
Setting the bar higher to make more of an impact
We are ambitious and happy to shout
about it. Ambitious for our students.
Ambitious for our staff. For our partners.
And for ourselves as an academic
institution. We expect a lot from everyone
who studies and works here. Set high
standards and measure our success by the
impacts we make academically, and in
business and society.
Our curriculum produces talented, work-ready
graduates with the skills demanded by today’s
employers. Fine Art student and sculptor
Rebecca Halliwell-Sutton was recently awarded
the prestigious Woon Art Prize – the graduate
equivalent of the Turner Prize. She picked up
£20,000 and a free studio for a year.
Partnership
Reaching out to push the boundaries of the possible
Education, and particularly higher
education, should always be a collaborative
process and here at Manchester
Metropolitan, our world is enriched and
our achievements made more effective
through partnership at every level.
Our nurse education expertise is supporting the
ground-breaking Care England Teaching Care
Home project, a nurse-led initiative to improve
the learning environment for staff working in
homes, undergoing nurse apprenticeships and
all learning placements in care homes.
Examples of recent key achievements
by our staff and students
Community
Making a contribution not just to one community, but to many
Sustainability
We are an active, energetic and engaged
university, putting our thinking and ideas,
our research and knowledge to work in
the real world. So our staff, students and
alumni contribute not only to the
Manchester Metropolitan community, but
to all the communities and lives we touch.
We are boosting the job prospects of Cheshire
school pupils with special needs through a
ground-breaking work experience programme.
The Bridging the Gap initiative has enabled
pupils to gain valuable work experience in our
Catering, Facilities, IT Services, Students’
Union, Sports Science Department and Library.
A number have used this opportunity as
a springboard to secure an apprenticeship or
a paid position.
Working hard now and in the future to help craft a better world
Higher education exists in an increasingly
dynamic, demanding and competitive world,
where to stand still is to go backwards.
At Manchester Metropolitan, we have a
conscious cultural commitment to
maintaining our energy levels and continuing
to drive up academic and creative
standards, achievements in research, and
engagement in the community.
Our Centre for Enterprise and the Department
of Food and Tourism Management joined forces
with Stockport-based Robinsons Brewery to
identify how pubs, restaurants and bars can
become greener and more profitable. The
resulting handbook offers advice on how to reduce
food and drink waste, maximise energy and
water efficiency and generate an income from
trade waste such as cardboard and cooking oil.

First Generation Campaign
1 ST
GENERATION
CAMPAIGN
Transforming lives
Manchester Metropolitan
University is committed to being
a fully inclusive institution, open
to all with the talent to succeed,
regardless of background.
The First Generation Campaign
will fund a new scheme to
help bright, young people from
backgrounds that do not
usually enter higher education
to secure an undergraduate
place at Manchester Metropolitan
and then provide them with
continued financial, professional
and personal support throughout
their studies, to graduation and
into employment.
The scheme will be unique:
we are combining existing
best practice from our widening
participation pre-entry
programmes with the very best
activities from our on-course
careers and student support
teams. Added to these will be
new on-course elements, funded
by the campaign donors and
directly benefiting the student
participants. We aim to give
these students the confidence,
knowledge, professional skills
and network opportunities to
transform their lives.
We aim to provide 50 places
in the first year of the First
Generation Scheme, in 2017.
Donations to the First Generation
Campaign will fund the new
activities that directly benefit the
student participants and help
to transform young lives.
