THEME AND OBJECTIVES
The project – The “Ludo”. The Ludotheke
of Guimarães historical center is a public
equipment, which aims to articulate a
complex programme with different scales of
the project making.
The student was supose to master the
interdependence of the different aproach
scales (including the most detailed); a critical
interpretation of a complex programme,
focused on aspects such as: public
and private, adaptability and versatility,
outdoor and indoor space, the association,
space definitation and aggregation – the
constructive system option; and the mastery
of the project communication strategies.

THE LUDOTHEKE MEANING
The Ludotheke is an equipment with a
recreational and educational character,
suited for the children (age 3 to 10), a toys
collection that can be used in the same place
or borrowed. One could say that the toys are
part of the ludotheke as a book is part of a
library. The word “Ludotheke” comes from
Latin ludus, which means toy, and from the
greak théke, which means box or safety box.
The student was supose to “brainstorm” the
toy box , having to consider the articulation
between the outdoor and indoor space, the
public space (street) and the inside of the
block, the programme containers and how
they work with the light, the combination of
formal and conceptual idea with the idea
built.
The programme is developed in two
constraints áreas, with different ilumination
and utility.

The Ludotheke is implanted in a
free parcel of Guimarães Historical
Center, between two gables of urban
mesh from the historical center, in
confrontation and articulation of the
Martins Sarmento Lake (existent
public space) and the interior of a
private block, projecting.

STAIRS
The solution to the vertical, spacial and organizational problem
of this project was the stairs. The stairs system allowed the
access and communication of the different floors, creating a
logic, pragmatic and efficient distribution, solving the entire
organization of the programmes of the building in just two
vertical and narrow stairs in each main volume of the building.

The biggest challenge of this project
was to focus in the realization of
a very complex programme in a
construction lot, quite strait and
narrow. Judging by the morphology
of the lot, it quickly became obvious
that, spacially speaking, any project
with a vertical construction would
more easily fulfill the programme.

Besides the complex and multifarious programme,
there was another limitation, the lightning rules.
Each program according to its characteristics, had a
different lightning: indirect light (zenith), direct light
(windows) or artificial light (light bulbs and lamps).

In the end of the academic year, the Bang Organization invited
our Architecture School to present the best projects of the entire
year. This project was selected to represent the third year of the
architecture course. There were many guests at the exposition,
including Eduardo Souto Moura (Pritzker 2011), Carvalho Araújo,
Carrilho da Graça and Cannatà & Fernandes Architects.

This project is about agricultural
farms of dairy cattle (Frisia Holstein
breed), focusing on Quinta da Eira’s
study case, in Mire de Tibães – Braga.
It consists in the elaboration of a
project with a new agricultural holding
that takes into account the territorial
caracteristics of the place where we
are going to intervene and the existing
Portugal’s agricultural activity.

Farming properties without farming
activity. Lack of land maintenance
transforming it in savage state and
growing continualy until becoming a
forest.
Inactive
Farming lands without any farming
activity, only subject to regular
maintenance by the owner or others.
This maintenance is executed only to
prevent the transformation of the land,
avoiding it classification as abandoned
Semi-active
Farming properties with a bit of farming
activities. Short farming periods, or just
half year between May and September
for corn planting. During the rest of the
year the fields remain inactives, with or
without maintenance depending on
owners choices.
Active
Farming fields with intensive farming.
This properties are constantly using the
ground to diverse activities and cattle
feeding. Generally the owners make
farming activities their profissional
activity and a financial sustenance.
Pasture
Farming properties exclusively to animal
pasture. Rent parcel or pasture property
to cattle feeding. This parcels are
generally divided in smaller areas to
make the field more profitable for animal
grazing.

Our methodology was based on a first analysis of the territory,
followed by the search of the essential study cases to the
understanding of the agricultural holding as a project. Then we
made a geographic study to try to understand the limitations of
the agricultural holdings and models applications in portuguese
territory, which resulted in a projct strategy fit to the territorial
context and agricultural holdings landscape.

where we are going to intervene is
of significant importance, due to its
appliances and caracteristics, that
allows us to gain a vast knowledge
about the stockbreeding and the
current landscape of its holdings.
We intend to analise all of the ideas,
problems and possible solutions, so
that we can create a new insight into

All this process allowed us to organize
a new way of thinking and applying
the agricultural model, by making a
territorial management and edifying
action of the agricultural activity and
agricultural parcels of the community,
which resulted in a collective farm
and community inclusion of small
agricultural holdings as an alternative

OBJECTIVE
The challenge of this project was
making a composicion for an idea
without any programatic restrictions
or imposition of a place, having
a huge liberty to intervene in the
delimeted area of Viana do Castelo
city center.
CONCEPT
The chosen place for the intervention
was the Gago Coutinho Street, one of
the most important and proxim streets
of the city center, due to the facades
set that it presents. On the north side
there’s the Palácio das Malheiras
facade and on the south área there’s
another facade set that is typically
portuguese.
In analysis, the Gago Coutinho street
is an interesting case with regard to
the dimension, because although
it’s a simple crossing street, it’s
dimension is very wide, enough to
be caracterized as a square/street.
Based on all this, our idea was born, a
programatic diffusion along the street,
an installation of several programmes
that stimulates the entire space,
simultaneously providing a set of
facades that reflect and blend.

IDEA
The project is born from the will to
create a visual game using one of
the facades that composes the Gago
Coutinho Street. A peculiar facade
that presents itself with different
hierarchies and typologies from one
floor to the other. This game consists
on showing or covering, through
different programatic volumes, the
hierarchies caused by the assembly
itself of the preexisting façade. This
generates different identities as well
as the positioning of the façade and
materiality of volumes.
MATERIAL
The material of these objects is a
decisive factor and it will dictate
what the observer is going to see.
The material executes different
visual plans, such as: transparency,
reflection and stability. The glass
is the solution to all the local
compositional possibilities, because
it is the most versatile material in the
plans system.

STRUCTURE
The structure that will make possible this
programatuc machine is a forest of pillars that
always prevails in the public space. Because of this
public coldness passing, I decided to use steel as
a cold and disconnected material from the site and
surrounding, just like a true forest would be in this
location. This material allows to use various circular
base dimensions and length as a real forest.

EXPOSITION
In the end of the academic year the class and the
comissar architect Paulo Araújo Carvalho, organized
an exposition in Viana do Castelo (Portugal) to show
the diferents interventions to the community and
the autarchy. After this we were invited to a new
exposition in the Coruña’s architecture univertsity
(Spain) to show the diferents ways of intervene with
architecture ideas and make them executables.

OBJECTIVE
The exercise was based on a
recreation of the Unité d’Habitation –
Marselha executed by Le Corbusier.
The objective was to realize the same
aproximation in diferent scales of
intervention as Le Corbusier projected
in that time, following the same
modelar rules, programatics and the
relations between the diferent scales
of intervention.

CHALLENGE
The main purpose of this project was to consolidate the diferent
intervation scales and it consists in three main scales: the city
scale, implantation of the unité’s on the construction site; the
unité’s scale, to approach the building modules and program,
organizing the public and private space; and the apartment
scale, that involves the comunication between diferent spaces
inside and outside of the apartment.
THE BLOCKS
The concept illustrats the arrival of a rafts group floating down
the river and crashing on the highway barrier, that is the main
concept for the position and variation between the buildings
blocks. The construction site was molded as an ocean motion
according to the concept, so it was possible to redraw some of
the field lines to compose the project illustration.
To access the blocks (unité’s) it was designed a quay as a
second element on the project, this element is isolated from
the blocks but it’s like a quay for a boat, it is a single element
but crucial to access the boat. The quay is the planner element
between the blocks (rafts), its orthogonal design offers a metrical
logic to make the access to the rafts, the most simple and easy
process as possible. The project has three main axis of 8 meters
and other six of 6 meters, this allows to create a hierarchy
between accesses.

THE UNITÉ
The building works like a raft, the
apartments are making themselfs
the raft base for a walking and public
space above it. The spaces on top
of the apartments can be use as
courtyards for the residents and as a
public space for the visitors/residents.
The entrance in the apartments and
building block is always transversal.
It works like cracks on the building
that allows to enter between the
programms. It was designed a logic
hierarchy for the cracks, the biggest
cracks consist in the entrance for
public spaces and programms. On
the other hand, the small ones consist
in the apartments with a small and
confortable measure for a private
space.

THE APARTMENT
The apartments work arround a
common courtyard (or private
courtyard in some situations). The
courtyard allows the light to enter
in some of the apartment areas.
The apartments work also as an
articulation piece that allows the
comunication between the private
and public spaces. It has two
entrances, one from the garage space
and another one from above the
apartment, in the public space.
In the garage we have access to a
laundry, courtyard and stairs to the
first floor (home area). From the first
floor we have access to a second
courtyard and public space on the
apartment roof. The home area shares
three main divisions: the living/kitchen
room with toilet on the front; the study
room opened to the courtyard on the
middle; and the two bedrooms with
toilet in the backs.
