A HEROES
HOMECOMING
As the end of the year draws in,
we can start to look back on
some of the best achievements
of 2016. So, what better achievement to
celebrate than Great Britain’s fantastic
run at both the Rio 2016 Olympics and
Paralympics?
Held in Mid-October, the city of
Manchester celebrated the athletes of
Team GB with a huge parade held in the
city centre. A victory parade unlike any
other, the event put the competitors
and champions of Rio 2016 back in
the spotlight for a celebration of their
incredible achievements and athletic
spirit.
Winding its way through the city
streets, Manchester’s parade proved
to be every bit as vibrant as its Rio
counterpart. British athletes celebrated
a record-breaking run at the Rio 2016
Games and this historic performance
has not been lost on the folks back
home. More than 150,000 people lined
the streets of Manchester to welcome
the athletes, cheering and waving flags
in a rapturous reception.
400 Team GB athletes were taken from
the Museum of Science and Industry
around Manchester before ending at
Albert Square. With 67 medals won
at Rio 2016, Team GB beat their own
record from the London 2012 Games.
Team GB’s Paralympians also beat their
own record from 2012, winning 147
medals – 27 more than previously.
The first city to host a parade for the
Team GB athletes, the Manchester event
reflected the city’s contribution to the
Rio 2016 roster. Manchester certainly
had plenty to contribute towards the
efforts for Rio 2016. Venues like the
Velodrome Training Centre provided
plenty of training for the athletes in the
run-up to the games, whilst Greater
Manchester based athletes like Dame
Sarah Storey (Britain’s most successful
Paralympian), Jade Jones and Jason
Kenny proved to be champions at the
2016 Games.
Golden couple
Laura Trott and Jason Kenny are
expected to be at the
Manchester Olympic parade
Previous X-Factor singer Rebecca
Ferguson and Leeds-based Indie
act The Kaiser Chiefs provided live
entertainment for the crowds and
athletes alike. Braving the rains to
celebrate the athletes who made Rio
2016 so exciting to follow, the people of
Manchester helped provide a perfectly
triumphant bookend to the efforts of
Team GB.
THE BEST BRITISH
BAND OF THE LAST
20 YEARS?
DEFINITELY MAYBE!
Undoubtedly one of the biggest
bands to come from Britain in the
past 20 years, the contributions
of Oasis to global music and culture
are insurmountable. Now, a little over
twenty years after the band changed
the musical landscape as pioneers of the
Britpop movement, Oasis are enjoying
two separate celebrations on their home
turf.
NEWS // SPONSORED BY RUBRIC LOIS KING SOLICITORS
9
Manchester Central Library is hosting
a photographic gallery of the band,
created by Jill Furmanovsky. A famous
musician photographer in her own right,
Furmanovsky presents a pictorial journey
through Oasis’ history. A band with a
strong (but low-key) visual aesthetic,
you can be sure that the Oasis exhibition
will visit some of the band’s most striking
visuals from across their career. This
exhibition also has ties to the greater
Manchester music scene and history,
making use of original materials from
the “Was There Then” exhibition from
1997, which was hosted at the legendary
Hacienda club.
“DNA Oasis” wasn’t the only Oasis
exhibition on display this Autumn,
however. The famous “Chasing The
Sun” exhibition which was greatly
acclaimed in London visited Manchester
in October. Spanning the years 1993
to 1997, “Chasing The Sun” explores
the formative years of the band’s
development and offers fans the
opportunity to recreate the iconic
“Definitely Maybe” album cover on a
life-size replica set.
Originally debuted in 2014, “Chasing The
Sun” enjoyed more than 40,000 visitors
in just ten days after launching. The
exhibition also featured various other
memorabilia including the melting clock
from the “Supersonic” sleeve and the
Gibson Les Paul gifted to Noel
Gallagher by fellow Mancunian music
legend Johnny Marr.
If there’s one thing these exhibitions
prove, it’s that even seven years after the
band called it day, Oasis still command
the hearts of music-lovers worldwide.
Jill Furmanovsky’s “DNA Oasis” will
be on display at Manchester Central
Library until January 28, 2017. It is free
to enter.
THE FESTIVAL
COUNTDOWN BEGINS
Festival Season 2016 might be well and truly over, but
for the staff behind festivals the race is on to get next
year’s events set up and booked. The first wave of
tickets for Glastonbury Festival 2017 went on sale in October,
and sold out immediately.
The first (major) festival to announce (one of) its headlining
act for 2017 was Barclaycard’s British Summer Time (BST)
Festival, held at Hyde Park in London. American Pop-Punks
Green Day will headline the event on July 1st 2017. Elsewhere
in the Punk world, the annual Rebellion Festival (Europe’s
largest Alternative/Punk festival) has been steadily releasing
its acts since the end of this year’s festival, with acts The
Skids, Sham 69 and Angelic Upstarts already confirmed.
Download Festival 2017 also announced its first wave of
acts, including US Metal band System Of A Down, US Rock
legends Aerosmith and homegrown Scottish Rock act Biffy
Clyro. Tickets went on general sale at 10AM November 4th,
following a Pre-Sale sell-out.

THE LUX TUX
The Tuxedo is the go-to staple for any ‘black-tie’ event,
sophisticated ceremony or exclusive ball. Unlike a daytime
suit which is suitable to wear to the office or out to lunch,
the tuxedo is classically referred to as dinner clothes - to be worn
exclusively in the evening. Here is our guide for looking sharp and
debonair...
The centre piece of the ‘black tie’ look is the tuxedo which has
certain attributes that set it apart from formal/daytime wear:
THE LAPELS | Whether you decide upon a peaked lapel (the most
formal form) or shawl collar (equally acceptable), the classic tuxedo
jacket should have lapels covered in black satin/silk.
TAIL OR NO TAIL | Unlike formal wear the tuxedo should be
tailless and single breasted – although double breasted jackets are
acceptable, the single breasted tux is suitable for those who are a
stickler to tradition.
THE VENTS | For purists vents (slits at the back) should be avoided,
however double vents are acceptable for comfort. Nevertheless,
avoid a single vent as this is considered too informal for evening
wear.
THE POCKETS | The pockets of a tuxedo should not have flaps; a
classic tuxedo will always have jetted (slit) pockets.
MATCHING BOW | Traditionally the lustre of the lapels should be
followed through to the bow, if the lapels are satin then a satin bow
should be worn, the rules are equally the same for silk lapels.
THE BUTTONS | The buttons on a tuxedo should be matching and
covered - preferably in the same material as the lapels. Like a suit,
the sleeves should have four touching buttons.
Here are our favourite tux looks this season from
Dolce & Gabbana...

TIS THE SEASON TO BE HEALTHY?
Christmas is certainly the most wonderful time of year…
Just not for our weight! Crispy Yorkshire Puddings,
goose-fat roasted potatoes, milky hot chocolate and
that fancy cheeseboard are all part of the festive fun, but
too much can leave us in fear of stepping on the scales once
the holiday is over.
Well, as my gift to you this Christmas here are some tips
on ways to avoid over-indulging before you pack on those
pounds!
Start off with soup. Heavy cream based soups may taste
delicious, but opting for a broth based soup rich with
protein and veg will fill you up so you indulge less on your
main course, with the added bonus that it also tastes
delicious.
Don’t do a festive food shop on an empty stomach! We
eat with our eyes, and supermarkets know this best. Clever
marketing and a rumbling stomach will have you buying all
kinds of unnecessary items, probably packed with sugar!
Keep a food diary. If you worry that you might eat too much
during the day, keep track with a food diary. If you’ve been
naughty it might motivate you to cut down on those treats
you’ve been having.
Manage your portion sizes. Can’t fit that extra Yorkshire on
the plate? Don’t pile it on top! Section your plate to fit on
meats and carbs, with the other half left for vegetables. If it
doesn’t sit nicely on your plate, you probably don’t need it.
Keep exercising. When the weather is bad and your
favourite festive film is on TV, its hard to motivate yourself to
work out, but doing a HIIT sessions 3 times a week will help
you burn off the extra calories and maintain your current
weight.
The holidays are about enjoying yourself, so don’t go
overboard dieting or thinking you have to chomp on celery
rather than a mince pie, but by controlling your portions and
making sure you have enough fresh vegetables you can have
a jolly Christmas.
FROM MEDICINE TO MUSIC
(VIA CAGE FIGHTING): SUBAIG SINGH’S STORY
As kids, we’re always told to follow our dreams. Usually, in
our teens we find ourselves suddenly confronted with the
reality that a respectable career just might be a better and
more realistic option than becoming the next big pop star.
For Dr Subaig Singh, a respectable career could never stop
him from following his dreams.
“I by my parents and
had a good schooling…
I was privately educated
was exposed
to various
disciplines and
extra-curricular
activities as
a child. My
parents wanted
me to be
grounded in
both my Punjabi
Sikh culture
and yet also be
comfortable in
a white middle class world.” So whilst by day
Subaig studied to become a doctor, he also
started learning martial arts. “It was a welcome
form of stress relief during medical school
and enabled me to express my connection to
my warrior Sikh roots. It was a natural, slow
and organic progression for me to make the transition from
martial arts to professional fighting in a cage.”
ENTERTAINMENT // SPONSORED BY ALPS MEDIA & PUBLISHING
Enjoying the performance aspects of cage fighting and the
thrill of pitting his skills against other trained warriors in
front of large audiences, Subaig would be saving lives during
normal work hours, then head off to prove himself in the ring.
As he puts it – “I felt like a modern-day gladiator”.
Of course, these two things weren’t Subaig’s only outlets –
also educated in music as a child, he admits that he hated
having to learn at the time, but is now glad his parents
pushed him to do it. Experimenting musically at university,
Subaig would learn the drums and play in several bands
before developing a deep love for Punjabi Folk Music. “This
love has grown stronger over time, yet I have only had the
opportunity to express it
recently by releasing my own
songs.”
Asked what advice he would
give to others looking to follow
in his example, Subaig has a
very simple (yet powerful)
message;
“MUSIC is
a wonderful outlet
through which I
can connect with my
SOUL”
Believe in yourself. Surround
yourself with positive,
encouraging people. This is
about self-belief, positivity
and confidence. These are the
primary driving forces that can
make things happen in your
life. The best advice I give is to
refer to the Nike motto:
JUST DO IT.
WHITE
CHRISTMAS
Hiya, my amazing readers! Raven here, how are all of you this fine, cold
November? Has anyone died of exhaustion from school yet? (I have,
thoroughly. GCSE’s are sooooo tiring.) Are any of you doing early Christmas
shopping~? I know some of you are, better get those Christmas trees out of
your attic, hide the lights from the cats and get that old gift wrapping paper
you got from your cousins last year that you kept to save money! (If you
didn’t do that, there’s a life hack – always unwrap your presents carefully.)
So, judging from my title, there’s been a lot of change recently. Like Brexit
(ewww…Brexit.), and the changing of seasons, and children going up a year in
education, etc… Looots of change!
It’s cold, and there’s rumours of us actually getting a White Christmas this
year. How beautiful! I haven’t seen one for a good year or so. But for me, the
beauty of change for me right now is how I get to stay inside. No joke, my
inner introvert cries tears of joy when I don’t have to go outside. :’) But what
about you guys? Are any of you actually going Christmas shopping a month
early? Getting presents and your Christmas trees? (Fun fact – my mum’s
decided to get a white Christmas tree this year).
Now, I’ve got some stuff to say about my comics. They may not be comics
for a smaaalll while, because I’m struggling slightly with all of my GCSE
work (I personally blame Science). But on the flip side, I’ve got a super cool
announcement below. Be sure to read it! Until next month, guys! – Raven
ASKING QUESTIONS! :D
If you’re reading this, I’ve got news! :D Online I’ll be getting my characters,
like Joker, Lenka, Miko and our newcomer Ódinn – and not to mention
myself also – to answer your questions! How exciting is that?! You can ask
whatever you want, I’ll try to get them to answer as many as possible. All
you have to do is send me an email at ravenknight61@gmail.com with your
first name (So I can credit your question~) and your question, and that’s it.
If you ask the right questions, maybe you’ll find some secret characters that
I’m planning to add later on. ;)
Reckon I should do stuff like this every so often? I’m going out on a limb
here – I like testing things! So please don’t hesitate to send in anything, we
don’t bite!

The Noble Boxer
My feature this month is with the inspirational Jobie Chalfin the CEO and Founder of Chalfin Boxers, a
fabulous person behind a fabulous brand (and one to keep following no doubt about that). I met Jobie
through a mutual friend a year or so ago but it feels we have been friends a great deal longer, she has
a fantastic energy and warmth of personality that infiltrates into her brand’s persona too. This is one
company that is certainly working hard at bringing back a buzz to clothing made on British shores and
I had the pleasure to catch up with Jobie recently to ask her a few questions about her journey and
experience to date.
BY ROBERT HALLMARK CEO GRUHME
Tell us a little bit about Chalfin?
The boxer shorts are manufactured
in the U.K by a very niche
company who have a strong
belief in producing quality over quantity.
They have a sleek inner lining to gently
hug a chap where he needs it most to
give both comfort and style. They are
superbly tailored and designed here in
the U.K and constructed form the finest
cotton with a hidden ‘hammock’ in super
soft jersey.
Was there anything in particular that
motivated you to start your own
business?
Having a lot of boy mates and a very
fussy brother, we often used to chat
in general about various things, one of
them being boxer shorts. They preferred
the look of cotton boxer shorts but
missed a little bit of support. This was a
light bulb moment for me and I set off
on my journey to make a cotton boxer
with a subtle support. I was fortunate
to have lots of volunteers to give them
a ‘test run.’ After a year we finally got
there!
You make a big reference to the British
heritage of the brand, how does that
help the business?
Consumers perceive value in the quality
of British made products. I am also
very patriotic and I want to support our
manufacturing industry.
Where do you see your brand in 4
year’s time?
Someone makes me offer I can’t refuse
for the business, I can retire, go on lots
of ski and beach holidays. In all honesty I
want guys to really enjoy wearing Chalfin
boxer shorts and keep coming back for
more thus creating a household brand.
If you could go back and talk to yourself
starting out, what 3 bits of advice
would you share?
Don’t do it... Just joking! But, I never
realised just how hard it would be. Don’t
have too much stock made up on your
first couple of orders. And to not take
things to heart when people are pulling
your product apart, learn from it and
move on it.
If your brand was a make of car what
would it be?
Bentley... British, stylish with ultimate
comfort.
Do you see the brand expanding into
new products or staying as a specialist
in men’s boxers?
I’d like to do loungewear next for men
but for the time being I’m sticking with
the boxer shorts.
Do you have a perfect major retailer
you would like to be listed in?
I’d love to be stocked in Liberty’s or
Selfridges...one day!
What tips help you get through your
working day and week?
You are going to have your good and
bad days and it’s those bad days when
you question yourself to why you are
doing this. That’s when I pick up the
phone and talk to one of my other
friends who have businesses and get
the advice I need to give me that boost
again.
Business is tough; if it was easy everyone
would be doing it.
Networking is all-important. I have learnt
so much from others and made some
good friends along the way.
Work life balance - is it achievable in a
start up on your own? What do you do
about it?
I think so but you never really switch. I
think I’ve been fortunate to have been
brought up in a family where my parents
have always had their own businesses
and now my brother so I’ve learnt a lot
from them.
Would you do it all over again?
Absolutely, I love what I’m doing and
even though it is really tough I wouldn’t
change it for the world.
WHAT DOES YOUR
SOCIAL MEDIA SAY
ABOUT YOU?
Billions of people
communicate
via social
media every day.
Facebook has
around 1 billion active
monthly users while
Twitter has more than
300 million active
monthly users. Social
media has become
so ubiquitous in the
developed world it
has become difficult, if not impossible, to ignore it. There is
little doubt the way we communicate our online personas
matters. Yet most of us spend little time giving any thought
to how we can and should portray ourselves for others to
see us the way we want them to see us.
A plan for a new purchase often begins with a quick
web search; and this is becoming increasingly the case
for potential employers or business associates. The 2015
Guardian Jobs Recruiter Survey found that three quarters
(75%) of recruiters have assessed the various social media
platforms of potential candidates.
Whether you intend it or not, your social media profiles
communicate something about you. People use the
information they glean from your profiles to form a
perception of you. Such perceptions influence people’s
decisions and judgements. Recently, I attended a social
media debate where one young woman explained that she
had rejected a potential date after seeing what she referred
to as his, ‘lame Twitter account’. It is not improbable that a
job offer, a business deal or an important relationship can be
jeopardised by a Facebook rant, a tweet, a like or a share on
one’s profile.
In life we have the option to compartmentalise. We can
choose to keep separate our private and professional lives,
and to share only the information we want. However social
media has led to considerable blurring of these boundaries.
Digital footprints, unlike footprints in the sand, are forever
traceable. No matter how high your privacy settings are,
you will continue to leave digital trails. Your use of language
and the expression of your views, all provide ‘evidence’ from
which people judge your character and potential. If you are
not comfortable with your boss or business partner seeing all
your social media profiles, should they really be left as they
are?
Used strategically, social media can be a fantastic tool for
projecting an image of yourself that you want others to
see. What you say matters, but how you say it matters
even more. One simple rule you could implement is to avoid
commenting or posting in the heat of the moment or when
you feel strong emotions about an issue. It is difficult to
control our language or consider others’ feelings when we
are in a heightened emotional state. Instead, find another
outlet that is not public-facing.
After all, you are what you post!
AWAY TO
A WINTER
WONDERLAND
Is there any better way than embracing the winter chill than by jetting off
abroad? Here at In The City Magazine we certainly don’t think so! Here
are eight of our favourite destinations for you to visit during the endmonths
of the year to beat back those winter blues…
BY RICH HOBSON
Ottawa, Canada
Few places on Earth can boast a
combination of gorgeous sub-Arctic
landscapes and brightly lit bustling
cities quite like Canada. Awash with
a kaleidoscopic plethora of colours
during December, Canadian capital
Ottawa gets into the seasonal spirit
with a festival of coloured lights that
lend the city a wonderful vibrancy.
It’s not all baubles and glitter though;
Ottawa also offers plenty of fun
winter-appropriate activities like ice
skating, dog-sledding and skiing.
Copenhagen, Denmark
In 2016 Denmark was voted as the
World’s Happiest Country, according
to the fourth “World Happiness
Report”. It stands to reason then, that
Copenhagen (as Denmark’s capital)
would stand to be the happiest
place in the happiest city on Earth!
With typical Scandinavian weather
conditions creating perfect winter
wonderland conditions, helped along
by an intrinsic European sense of
Christmas celebration, Copenhagen
is absolutely ideal for any traveller
seeking out the comforts of a smalltown
Christmas in a big city setting.

39
Munich, Germany
The Bavarian Market might have
taken the world by storm, but the
true spirit of German celebration still
resides in Munich. Between bustling
Christmas markets, warming mugs of
mulled wine and unique celebrations
held right the way up to Christmas
Eve, Munich is still the crown of
seasonal celebration in Germany.
Holidaymakers looking to escape the
winter chill needn’t worry; Munich has
plenty of friendly beerhalls to ensure
you won’t move far without finding a
warm hearth and huge stein of beer.
Lapland, Finland
Santa isn’t the only thing excitable
travellers travel to the icy tundra
of Northern Finland for. With
glittering snowscapes far as the
eye can see, Lapland is a perfect
setting for intrepid explorers to visit
on a Northern Lights hunting trip.
Throw in some of the world’s most
premier skiing destinations and it’s
no wonder why Lapland is seen as
a fabled destination for the ultimate
winter loving holidaymaker and a
perfet getaway from the madcap
bustle of Christmas shopping.
Rome, Italy
Seeped in history and adorned
in Christmas spirit, Rome offers
holidaymakers an opportunity to
explore designer outlets and ancient
wonders alike along its brightened
streets. Christmas markets aplenty
prove that Germany isn’t the only
European country to stake a claim on
the commercial side of the season,
whilst mass pilgrimages to see the
Pope and participate in an authentic
Catholic Mass help maintain the
spiritual side of the Christmas season
for a perfect seasonal combination.
Reykjavik, Iceland
The Northern Lights (aurora borealis)
are one of the most colourful and
beautiful displays in the natural world.
As a result, it is unsurprising that
Iceland’s gorgeous rural expanses
have become one of the most
popular exploration spots for tourists
hoping to catch a glimpse of the
elusive phenomena. Further back
into the embrace of civilisation, the
Icelandic capital of Reykjavik has
stunning lights displays of its own,
with plenty of lights on display in the
darker months to help beat back the
darkening days.
Zermatt, Switzerland
If you think of quaint winter charm,
you’ll likely think of a small village
in the mountains, blanketed in
snow but glowing with warmth. In
short, you’ll be thinking of Zermatt.
Nestled into the Swiss Alps (which
should immediately perk the ears
of any skiing enthusiasts), Zermatt
bustles through the winter months
with its excellent programme of
skiing, snowboarding and hiking
activities. Far from the stresses of
home, Zermatt offers its visitors
an opportunity to enjoy premium
luxury in an alpine setting.
New York, USA
As any film buff could tell you, New
York is the place to be at Christmas.
Shows, concerts and parades cement
the city’s claim as “the city that never
sleeps”. Among the city’s biggest
boasting points at Christmas are
its iconic ice skating rinks, lively
Christmas markets and a huge annual
Christmas tree erected at Rockefeller
Place, each helping to lift the spirits
of New Yorkers and tourists alike –
and that’s before New York’s famous
food options come into the equation!

CONQUERING CHRISTMAS DEALS
There’s no denying that Christmas presents will be on everybody’s mind this month – unless you are one of the exceptionally
strange people who get all of their Christmas presents sorted in September! So it’s no surprise that offers start from the
American phenomena of Black Friday all the way through to the New Year for shoppers looking to secure that super-special
deal, with retailers offering flash sales which could see consumers complete their Christmas lists at half the cost. Lucky for
you, In The City Magazine are here to help you navigate your way through that most financially frenzied Friday…
Big Brands, Small Costs
Christmas deals wouldn’t earn the same level of commercial
interest if it were only participated in by Ma and Pa shops, so
the first place you’ll likely want to visit during your shopping
spree will be the big name retailers. Curry’s, PC World
and Asda have all previously offered incredible deals with
massive reductions in prices on appliances and products
acting as huge incentives to get into the spending spirit.
A Click on Monday Keeps the Queues Away
Last minute Christmas sales are now as big as Boxing Day/
January Sales, but that doesn’t mean that if you don’t go
out to the shops you’ll miss the best deals. It is more and
more common to find that people opt to not brave the
November colds in favour of staying at home and shopping
online on Black Friday’s sister event, Cyber Monday. Amazon
has always led the charge for online retailers offering
deluxe deals, though independent websites and websites of
shopping giants like Asda, Next and Argos can all net you
some incredible bargains.
Deals Far as the Eye Can See
It doesn’t matter if you’re a gadgets geek, a gizmo guru or
just savings-savvy, Christmas sales offers some of the best
opportunities to pick up those “must-have” items without it
putting the serious hurt on your wallet (and/or purse). Deals
don’t just stop at electrics and appliances though; more or
less anything can turn into fair-game for bargain boffins
looking to shift units. So if you’re looking to make any big
purchases this November it might be best to hold back until
the end of the month.
Shop Around
It’s tempting with all the bargains and super low-cost deals
flying around to just jump right in with the first bargain you
see and hope for the best. But, as with all things in life, a
little patience and some perseverance can go a long way. By
checking out multiple retailers (even some smaller brands
sometimes join in, if only to ensure they aren’t getting
pushed out by bigger brands) you might just find yourself
picking up incredible bargains even amongst the masssavings.
story infected me. My parents took me out on holiday to meet
the black sheep aunt, and I was hooked.
For the next 40 years I have been finding reasons to go
to Africa and to Kenya in particular. I have worked for
African focussed, travelled extensively, offered myself as
a consultant, and more recently as non exec and investor.
I do it as my passion, my hobby, never for money, always for
involvement. Today … I own tiny parts of my cousins' businesses
for fun and help them succeed in amazing situations.
Peach Pubs is my business. The High Field is one of our great
pubs, and now has The High Field Town House boutique hotel
next door. We do some great stuff all in the name of Making
Life Peachy. 17 pubs now and 400 in the team and I love it,
though I still spend 20 days per year in returning to Kenya. We
have fantastic fun running the pub business and supporting our
team. In our industry we are known for being one of the Best
Employers in Hospitality.
It's Kenya and the Maasai Mara…the huge national park next to
the Serengeti that is my current passion. My cousins and I own a
small safari lodge, the House in The Wild and they have created
a conservancy called Enonkishu, 6000 acres of land in Maasai
ownership with the help of a UN grant of $750,000, a training
centre for training Maasai in how to preserve the grasslands and
create a balance between their cattle, the grasses, the wildlife
and the tourists.
There is a huge issue to face which may eventually destroy the
last great land migration (the wildebeest) in Kenya. It is our
aim through education and a mixture of commercial business,
tourism and aid to create a sustainable future for the home
of the Maasai and the elephants, rhinos and lions. The main
objectives of the Enonkishu Conservancy are:
• Conserving one of Africa’s increasingly fragile ecosystems.
• Preserving and strengthening the Maasai heritage through
broader livelihood opportunities.
• Securing wildlife habitats through sustainable ecotourism and
holistic management which directly benefits local communities.
www.naretoi.com/conservancies.html
Obviously on my own I can't achieve much, but my cousins are
truly incredible people and they have gathered the UN, WWF,
Mama See and others. My job is to coach and support them. The
moment that still amazes me is when the UN, the WWF and the
Dutch government representatives sat with me, my cousin and
eight Maasai warriors with spears and drew out a 10 year plan on
a huge white board. Overcoming language, cultural differences
and real problems, we mapped a realistic dream, and two years

later we have increased grass coverage, elephants, incomes and
cows! And all with sustainability and mainly though education.
My biggest pleasure is actually welcoming people for the first
time to Africa. There is nothing better than talking through how
the wildlife interact with the Maasai and then explaining the cow
economy. Explaining how the Maasai increasingly want the life
they can see on their smartphones and not the pastoral lifestyle
of their fathers. And watching the newcomers’ faces.
We took 12 of the Peach team over in 2013 and we planted
trees and built a hippo fence. Last year, I actually decided to
try buying a cow for the herd and fatten it on the improving
grasslands. This year Peach is trying to raise funds to buy a
community herd of 700 cows. We will contribute $25,000 and
we are hoping to raise $100,000 to create the whole herd. Any
profit from the herd will support the community and hopefully
stop them needing to sell their land and break up the Mara.
This is a fantastic challenge and I hope some Birmingham
individuals or businesses might join me in supporting the Mara
and its people the Maasai. To the truly committed we are even
selling house plots; we now have 20 new safari houses in the
wild being built by people from all over the world on Naretoi, our
800 acre housing development.
Running and owning a pub business and a safari lodge is ever
busy, a huge commitment in energy and time, and the really
great thing about it is I still love it all. If you want to find out
more about any of the pubs or the Kenya projects, do just
dial into the websites or send me an email. And if you know
someone, who wants to support that herd or just visit, I can only
say it has Made My Life Peachy.
Non-stop
from
Birmingham
to India
every day.
Now that’s
pukka.
Or as we Brummies say: Bostin!
Why not fly direct from our
Balti Triangle to India’s Golden
Triangle. Formed by three cities,
Delhi, Agra and Jaipur, it’s one
of the most popular tourist
circuits in the world.
Agra is home to the Taj Mahal,
probably the most photographed
monument on earth - and here
it is again. Air India flies non-stop
to Delhi and also to Amritsar.
From Delhi you can get connecting
flights to several other destinations
including Mumbai, Goa and Kerala.
So whether you’re going to visit
relatives, attend a wedding or
simply to soak up the sun, one
thing’s for sure, you’re on your
way to holiday nirvana.
