The CW system treats 525 m 3 of wastewater per day. This system configuration is able to
perform a good nitrogen removal, especially during summer, when the receiving water body
has the lowest flow, and achieves the purification targets required by the Italian law (D.L.
152/06). The system is managed by the main water services contractor of the region,
Publiacqua Spa, and regularly monitored, at least for the outlet quality as requested by the
regional regulation.
The same treatment train has been applied also by a second Municipality is Northern
Italy; about 350 pe are treated by a CWs system located in Vizzola Ticino – Castel Novate,
near Varese.
The application of two stages or multistage CWs systems, with the combination of
Vertical and Horizontal flow reed beds, is rapidly becoming the most diffuse on the territory,
but the single house systems which still continue to be single stage and single bed.
Constructed Wetlands for Tertiary Treatment and Reuse
Jesi’s Municipal WWTP (Jesi - Ancona)
Wastewater from the city of Jesi was treated in an activated sludge conventional treatment
plant. The Jesi Municipality needed to upgrade the treatment capability from 15,000 to
60,000 p.e. and to reuse a part of the purified wastewater for industrial aims. The upgrading
of the plant consisted in two new compartments: a nitrification/denitrification technological
sector; and a final Constructed wetland sector.
