#50
Get prepped for
Christmas
This month we share
tips on saving money at
Christmas...
Christmas can be stressful, and
expensive! With our money saving
tips here are six ways to avoid
spending your pennies on the
less important parts of the festive
season.
1. Look to buy online
Try Amazon for books, Depop for clothes
or All Beauty for perfume - it’s the same
products, only cheaper.
2. Use your loyalty cards
An obvious but important one - what’s the
point of having a Boots Advantage/Tesco
Clubcard/Sainsbury’s Nectar if you never
claim the points you save? Save all year and
by Christmas, you’ll have a decent amount in
cash to spend - or, convert into vouchers to
spend at the specific store and they often give
you more.
3. Don’t overbuy food
Whilst you might love a turkey sandwich on
Boxing Day, there is such a thing as buying
too much Christmas food.
4. Use voucher codes
With Christmas comes endless socialising,
endless shopping and endless money leaving
your purse, which is why signing up to a
couple of voucher code sites or scouring
the web before agreeing to evenings out or
buying any gifts is a good idea.
5. Don’t be a snob
Sometimes the best presents are homemade,
thoughtful things that can remind someone of
you. So give it a go!
6. Be organised
Make a list of all the people you need to buy
for and what you want to get them, because
it will help avoid a mad rush the week before
Christmas picking up anything and everything
from the shelves.
I’m not old i’m
Well hello there! I’m back with my monthly column… Ok so firstly a reminder about
me. I’m Zena (Zee for short) I’m 43, a mother and a grandmother.
Hands up who
LOVES Christmas?
Well, let me tell you,
in Suffolk we have
some of the most
artistic people I’ve
ever met.
If you are looking for
gifts that show you’ve
really taken the time
to choose
something
personal and/
or bespoke then
allow me...
I’ve been a
supporter of the
gorgeous Sophie
at Pocket Watch
and Petticoats in
Bury and I have to say the winter coats and
accessories are just gorgeous. They have
gloves and handbags to
match, and of course if
you can’t decide, they
do gift vouchers.
I’m also in love with
everything at www.
Mon-Petit-Chou.com.
Lucy is magical with a
sewing machine and I
just love her
Christmas
stockings
that can be
personalised,
plus her
range of
baby clothes
that are so
cool, I want
her to make adult versions.
For Christmas Wreaths you can go traditional
with ‘The secret garden’ they can be found on
Instagram or Facebook. Or you can go quirky
with these alternatives from Poms of Joy on
ETSY. Both give you turbo Christmas feels!
We all love a picture or two around the
house, I’m always getting told off for
buying to many, but I think these fashion
drawings by the very talented Helen Hird
are amazing. You can have a commissioned
picture (like the one she did of my wedding
dress and for my maid of honour). Helen’s
work has just been published in British
VOGUE and Glamour Magazine. I must say
we are all over the moon for her and
this would suit any fashion fans for a
truly unique gift.
www.helenhird.co.uk.
Why not support
your local businesses
this Christmas!
To finish, Christmas wouldn’t be
Christmas without great food and
drink! I must advise a trip into ‘Gourmet
Goods’ found on St Johns Street in Bury
St Edmunds. My latest purchase has
been these gorgeous bubbles of fruit
that you add to your Prosecco, Gin or
Vodka. I can’t wait to try them. They also
have amazing Hampers, Whiskeys, and
food that has been carefully sourced. So
what are you waiting for, get out there and
support local businesses!
My plan on the build up to Christmas is to
start writing my gift guides, fashion guides
and my sale survival tips over Christmas on
my blog. Plus of course, i’ll have my New
Year outfit ideas for us ladies who are over
forty and fly! Whatever you’re doing enjoy
the holidays and do whatever makes YOU
happy. Here are my end of year stats...
Dress the Editor
Your Ultimate Fashion Fix from a fast growing
Boutique on the Norfolk/Suffolk Border
The dynamic duo from Auburn Boutique, Beccles.
Dress, Style and Photograph our Editor Rachel Ducker…
Lovely Layers
As we write this we are watching crisp red leaves dancing
across the roads on this blustery autumnal day. So in keeping
with the theme we thought it best we start by sharing this
fabulous look that is inspired by the colours of the autumn
leaves twirling our little shop by the church.
Warm tones like Burgundy, Chocolate and Tan are key this
season; all are colours that we (along with the help of our
trusty fashion source) predict will be key colours in play in the
fashion world until well after SS17 begins. Burgundy featured
daily on the AW16 catwalks of London Fashion week; as well
as on the streets of Milan, Paris and New York.
But the real Go-to Trend this winter is ‘Layering’: Ponchos,
Waistcoats, Coatigans, Shirts. You name it. We’ll layer it.
Layering is so quick and easy to do and it is really effective
when done well. We’ve used unusual colour combinations,
different proportions and textures for a fresh take on the
FASHION
Texture Clash
Cast aside any aspersions you might have about
Texture Clashing. This season this unique trend
has featured prominently on Gucci and Topshop
Runways, and according to our source it is a
fashion frenzy that is here to stay. Clashing fabrics
is so big this season, it begs the question…. is it a
sign of things to come? Colour Clashing Maybe?
Who knows.
linear look this winter. Not only does this outfit
ooze style it is also a great alternative to wearing
a coat.
Start simple. We chose to dress Rachel in our
burgundy, black and white striped ‘Circle of Trust’
shirt. The Burgundy running through the shirt
really complimented her skin tone so we decided
to use this as our main colour base. We layered
one of our knitted, burgundy waistcoats over
the top and draped a staggered black pendant
drop necklace around her neck to create lots of
different dimensions and shapes within the layers.
It’s important you do this when layering so that
your outfit doesn’t look “boxy”.
Texture Clashing is all about having the confidence
to pair the unexpected. With 80’s making a
comeback this season why not incorporate the
two and see what you’ve got hiding in the back of
your wardrobe (or maybe even your mothers?) So
ladies, dig out those leather look trousers and pair
them with that oversized Chunky Knit jumper or
maybe you could try on Cordouroy skirt from your
younger years and give it a new lease of life with a
silk chiffon top. The possibilities are endless.
We finished this effortlessly chic daytime look with
an oversized tan bag, our favourite chocolate jeans
and a pair of our brand new Chestnut tassel suede
boots, available in sizes 3-8. They are a real go-to
boot that can easily be paired with any outfit. The
fringing gives them a dressy feel making them
a great transitional shoe to help take any outfit
from day to night. After only a week on the shop
floor we have had to order a new style of shoe
boot due to popular demand. Keep your eyes on
our Facebook and Instagram page for frequent
updates including a sneak preview of the next
“Cara London” shoe to touch down at Auburn HQ.
17

DECEMBER 2016 | ISSUE #50
The key to mastering this trend is to keep it simple
– unfussy shapes paired with textured fabrics
and minimal accessories are enough to make this
look reach its full potential. We tested our ability
to texture clash on Rachel and we have to say it
is one of our favourite looks to date. We chose
our oatmeal feather jumper because not only is
it a soft knitted texture, it also has a contrasting
feather that has been lightly embellished. Lighter
and Finer knitwear is chic as well as cosy and can
be perfect for both work and play.
A PU leather skirt was the next component to be
added to this look. Every woman should own at
least one black PU Leather skirt; it’s the perfect
staple piece that can take any outfit from day to
night with ease. The sleek, structured texture of
the skirt completely contradicts the soft, drape
of the jumper. These two simple pieces have
automatically created the perfect ‘Texture Clash’
outfit. We paired with heels and a small bangle
bracelet so the look can easily be worn from dawn
til dusk.
Winter Warmers
This winter coats are back in a big way. They are
no longer something we pull out every year to
keep as warm they are a statement piece of stylish
outerwear. With coats being such a statement
piece this winter it’s definitely acceptable to
buy more than just one; now if that’s not a good
enough reason to celebrate the temperature
dropping then we don’t know what is!
Our ‘Garcia Jeans’ are one of our favourite brands
in store this winter. Modelled tastefully here by
Rachel its beautifully made and tailored and
gives this outfit a really luxurious look. Tailoring
is key for AW16 and can completely change the
dynamics of any outfit depending on what is worn
underneath.
We’ve chosen to dress Rachel in a simple,
boyfriend slouch T-shirt and a pair of our skinny
leg denim jeans to create effortless textures and
dimensions beneath that key outer layer. As soon
18

FASHION
DECEMBER DECEMBER 2016 | 2016 ISSUE | ISSUE #50 | #50 FASHION
as we added the coat the whole dynamic of the
outfit changed and it became a structured and
classic look that is perfect for everyday wear.
The fox red shoes are from one of our Danish
Designers and they really brighten up this outfit
and give it a warm, autumnal feel. For a more
romantic look, a simple sliptop can be tucked in.
To finish the look add an extra sheer layer to give
a unpredictable chic edge.
TIPS & ADVICE THIS SEASON
THE
12 STYLES OF
Christmas
BY DANIEL FRANCIS
*Honesty disclosure; I will not be
detailing twelve different styles. More
like four or five but you see what I was
going for with that title.*
The Christmas season is upon us. Chances
are, by the time you’ve read this you will
have already been to at least one party, or
festive pub quiz or treated yourself to some
Christmas chocolate goodies (I know at least
one of you has demolished their entire advent
calendar).
If you’re like me you’re booked up pretty
much every Friday, Saturday and Sunday with
some kind of Christmas event which means
you’re going to need several different outfits
and options. Now, there are different routes
you can take depending on exactly how
festive you’re feeling.
FASHION
DECEMBER DECEMBER 2016 | 2016 ISSUE | #50 ISSUE | #50 FASHION
First up, there are the Christmas
jokers who are all about the novelty
jumper. I’m talking bells, lights,
maybe an antler here or there.
No judgements. However there are certain
occasions when these might not be the
best option. Christmas Jumper Day (Friday
16th Dec), general everyday wear, Christmas
jumper at work days, casual family events,
the aforementioned pub quiz; these are the
settings in which to turn heads with your fluffy
elf jumper. If you’re adamant that you’re going
to go novelty to the office Christmas party at
least take it all the way and spring for a suit
like this green number found on ASOS.
those who want to get into the spirit but
maybe without standing out from the crowd.
These are your Fairisle friends and these are
the jumpers you will find in every high-street
What’s great is that there’s even a scale of
Local young woman from Beccles wins Royal Award...
Gracie Wright, 31, from Beccles, was named winner
of the NatWest Enterprise award at The Prince’s
Trust and TK Maxx & Homesense Celebrate Success
Awards. A ceremony was held on 7th November
at the Craig Gordon Theatre in
Stevenage. The Awards recognised
the achievements of young people
across the East of England who have
succeeded against the odds, improved
their chances in life and had a positive
impact on their local community.
Gracie, 31, from Suffolk, had a happy
childhood, growing up by the sea with
a loving and supportive family. But
when she was 11 her life turned upside
down after a near-fatal car accident
left her with a severe brain injury. Gracie’s teenage
years were full of confusion and she experienced
severe depression. Although outwardly happy she
became introverted and disengaged and attempted
to take her own life more than once. Not long after
Gracie started working with children, motivated by
her own experiences, made a point of encouraging
the children she worked with, celebrating their
successes and re-affirming their achievements.
She found she was helping children and families
overcome issues which she understood so well and it
was at this time that she began writing
children’s picture books.
Through the Enterprise programme,
which helps unemployed young
people start-up in business, Gracie
was matched with a Business Mentor,
who helped her focus her energy and
abilities and so Miss Wright Publishing
took off. Gracie writes children’s picture
books, runs workshops and school
holiday camps for children and is an
inspirational speaker, talking to large
groups of children.
On winning the award, she said, “I am in absolute
shock. It was such a privilege to be nominated let
alone win the award! It is a huge encouragement for
me to continue with my business and I am sure it will
open doors for new adventures.”
The finishing touches
BY CATHERINE STARLING-GUNFIELD
So, you’ve set a date,
chosen a venue and all
the main suppliers are
booked, so what’s’ next?
The most exciting part, the
colour scheme, details and
finishing touches!
One of the best starting points
in choosing a theme is to take
inspiration from your chosen venue,
its decor, the colours, the setting,
the vibe etc.
All venues are unique but here
are some general design ideas for
different types of venues to get you
started:
Barn/Garden:
Country Garden: Bright colours, Bunting, Jugs of wild flowers,
Gingham, Polka Dots, Tissue paper Pom Poms, Jam Jars and
Cup Cakes.
Marquee:
Classic: White/Ivory, Tall Vases, Roses and Lilies, Fairy Lights
and tea lights, Candelabras
Banqueting Hall/Golf Club:
Glitz: Monochrome, Red, Diamante detailing, Crystals, Mirror
Plates and chocolate cake with Diamante Initials
Cake Topper.
Stately home:
Vintage: Bronze/Gold/Pastels, Birdcages, Cake Stands, Pearls,
Peonies and Freesias, Drapes, Vintage books and Vintage
Suitcase for ‘Cards’.
Centre piece tips:
With your centre pieces think about the conversational height,
30

WEDDING
DECEMBER DECEMBER 2016 | 2016 ISSUE | ISSUE #50 | #50 WEDDING
low displays or very high displays
work very well.
Tables can get very crowded, with
glasses, crockery, wine etc so
discuss the option for waiter service
for the wine and coffee to be added
to the table after dessert.
Candles:
There is nothing better than the
flickering of candle light to bring
a wonderful ambiance to your
tables, not all venues allow candles
so do check with them before
purchasing tea lights etc. If candles
are not an option, then there are
some excellent LED lights you can
purchase to create a very romantic
feel as an alternative.
If you are struggling or worried
about your theme coming together
remember these tips:
Keep to two colours that
complement each other, don’t
over complicate things with lots of
colours unless you are going for a
rustic/country theme where you can
really mix it up.
Ask your florist for help with
colours and texture to help bring it
together; there is no better supplier
to ask for colour inspiration.
Use your Venues knowledge, they
would have seen hundreds of
weddings, ask for guidance and
ideas.
One last little tip for colour
matching, use Deluxe colour cards,
they are brilliant.
FEATURE
DECEMBER 2016 | | ISSUE #50 | STING
Sting is back with a brand new
album, 57th & 9th represents a
wide range of Sting’s musical
and songwriting styles, from the
rocky “Petrol Head,” and melodic
“50,000” to guitar-driven first
single, “I Can’t Stop Thinking
About You”. The themes of travel
and motion which inform much of
the record are most apparent on
songs such as “Inshallah” and the
autobiographical “Heading South
On The Great North Road.”
We bring you this exclusive
interview with Sting about his new
release and what inspired him...
R: It’s been over a decade since you’ve
released a rock record – what inspired
your new album 57th & 9th?
I never actually admit I’m making a record
until very late in the process. So we
booked some studio time and invited some
musicians to come in and said, “We’re
not making a record, we’re just having
fun!” We improvised and at the end of
the day you have something that’s more
or less the structure and then you refine
it. And this happened very quickly, very
spontaneously. I work with extraordinary
musicians who are very gifted and give me
a lot to work with and my job is to make
sense of it all. My idea is always to try to
surprise myself and the people I’m working
with and hopefully the listener eventually.
To me the essence of music is surprise.
Both in the choices you make within a song
and the choices about what you present
to the public. I don’t make music by any
formulaic, magic process. I just follow my
instincts, I don’t know where it’s going...
And so on this album, we’ve ended up with
something that is energetic and noisy but
also thoughtful.
R: The first single on the album is I CAN’T
STOP THINKING ABOUT YOU. Was that
the song that triggered the rest of the
songs on the album?
Yes it was. And once you’ve got the first,
everything just follows.
Lyrically, I remember having nothing
written. All I had was a blank sheet of
paper in front of me, which looked like a
field of snow with no clues on it as to what
could be revealed there. So that first song
I wrote actually became the first song
on the album. It’s about that obsession,
that obsessive search for inspiration, for a
subject, for a muse, for the music to reveal
something inside itself… So the album
starts with that image of somebody with a
pencil waiting to write the story on a white
sheet of paper without any clues about
where it’s going.
R: And did you sense right away that it
was the key to unlock the album?
I thought it was a pretty honest statement
of what it means to be a song writer. It’s a
metaphor about trying to find inspiration.
So once I’d found that, I was happy
because I was really being true to myself
and true to my profession. It’s not easy,
song writing - it’s a great job, but it can be
a hard job!
I think you live in a permanent state of
anxiety as an artist. You write a song and
then suddenly you’re empty - what do
you do next? But, I wrote this song very
35 35

DECEMBER DECEMBER 2016 2016 | ISSUE | ISSUE #50 #50 | STING
quickly. Basically forced myself to keep
doing it - finish song, start another one.
Finish song, start another one. And I had
a timeline given to me by my manager. He
said, “Okay, it had to be finished on this
date…”. I’m not normally presented with a
deadline but I sort of enjoyed having that
pressure. It just gave me the impetus to
create something more spontaneous, with
an energy that we don’t have all the time in
the world, so let’s use the time well.
R: Is there a narrative or a recurrent
theme to 57th & 9th?
If there’s a lyrical theme that runs through
it, it’s about searching. It’s about traveling.
It’s about the road. It’s about that pull of
the unknown.
R: Explain the album title and the
significance of New York in the making of
this record.
I’ve had a home in NY for over 30 years.
So I feel like I’m a New Yorker, even though
I’m an Englishman in New York. This album
was recorded in three studios in Hell’s
Kitchen. And I love to walk to work. I walk
everyday with my guitar and it allows me
time to think and I believe walking is very
important for my creative process. To walk
to and from work is a great privilege that
a lot of people don’t have. They’ve got to
drive to work or get the train or whatever.
So walking has helped me get my thoughts
together. I might have music playing in my
head and a story being told as I walked
the streets. So, the album title refers to a
junction – 57th and 9th - that I had to cross
everyday on the way to the studio.
R: Tell us about some of the songs on the
album, starting with 50,000?
50,000 was really a response to the
passing of a lot of cultural icons this year.
Prince, David Bowie, Glenn Frey, Lemmy, as
well as my dear friend Alan Rickman. And,
it’s really about how surprised we all are
when one of our icons dies, because we’ve,
sort of, invested them with immortality, in a
way… So when they die, it really brings our
own mortality into sharp focus. I wanted to
respond to that as a rockstar myself. I’ve
been in that position, I’ve had hundreds
of thousands of people singing my songs
back to me, I know what that feels like. But
it’s an illusion, we are no more immortal
or no better than anyone else. We’re all
human beings and we are all too fragile.
So the song is about that. It’s about those
who die, but it’s also about me. And I think
it’s a fairly honest look about what it’s like
to grow old.
R:And HEADING SOUTH ON THE GREAT
NORTH ROAD is inspired by your own
experiences?
It is probably the most autobiographical
song on the record. The Great North Road
is the road out of Newcastle that runs from
Scotland down to London and I just like
the idea that the only way you would get
anywhere in life, at that point in time of
life for me, was to go south on The Great
North Road. And I spent a lot of time on
that road, doing gigs in London, coming
home and going back. It’s full of dreams
- dreams that were shattered and dreams
that were realized. A lot of my compatriots
went home without having any success. So,
it’s a story for all of us, really.
R: One song that covers a very topical
issue is INSHALLAH.
The refugee crisis is something that
36 36

FEATURE
37

DECEMBER DECEMBER 2016 | 2016 ISSUE | ISSUE #50 | #50 STING
concerns me greatly. I don’t think it’s going
to disappear. I think it’s really a crisis of the
century. It’s driven by poverty. It’s driven by
warfare.
The need to find safety. It will soon
be driven by climate change. And so,
whatever the solutions are and I can’t
offer any, but I know if there are solutions,
they have to be based in empathy for
the situation families find themselves in.
It’s important for us to imagine ourselves
without kids, without wives… parents. In
boats, trying to find somewhere that’s not
being bombed… or a place where you’re
not starving to death. It’s something that’s
common to all humanity.
We may in that situation ourselves, so it’s
important to imagine that and feel that
empathy because these human beings
deserve our help. We could be in the same
situation at some point looking for a roof
over our heads.
So, Inshallah was a song that I wrote - I’ve
always liked that word, Inshallah - it means
“God Is Willing” and there’s a
humility about that. There’s a hope
about that. And for me there’s a sense of
solidarity about that. But I cannot offer
more than that. But it’s not building walls,
it’s not leaving the EU... This won’t stop.
We have to accommodate the rest of our
brothers and sisters on this planet. If that
sounds idealist, fine - but really it’s the only
way. The other ways are unthinkable.
And we went to Berlin and recorded a
version with several Syrian musicians who
now live in Germany. And because I was
basically telling their story,
I wanted to work with them on their song,
if you like.
R: Was there a goal or something you
were hoping to achieve in making this
record?
No, I don’t have a goal except to have fun
and express something at the end of a
day’s work. You know, have something to
just take home to my wife and say, “This is
what I did today.” Like most people who
work, you need to have result at the end of
the day and that’s all.
R: Tell us what it was like working with
your manager Martin Kierszenbaum, who
also produced this record?
Martin is probably, I could be proven
wrong, the only rock and roll manager with
a degree in music. So when he suggests to
me that I try a major seventh or a flattened
5th in the chord, he knows what he’s
talking about.
He’s also a great business head and a great
energy, so he’s been a fantastic asset. He’s
also the guy who put a timeline in front of
me - you know, finish a record in this time!
So, I don’t think the record would have
been completed without him. Certainly not
in the way it has been. So I’m extremely
grateful and can’t wait to do it again.
57th & 9th is available
exhalation, step or lightly jump your feet 3 1/2 to
4 feet apart. Raise your arms parallel to the floor
and reach them actively out to the sides, shoulder
blades wide, palms down.
2.Turn your right foot slightly to the right and
your left foot out to the left 90 degrees. Align the
left heel with the right heel. Firm your thighs and
turn your left thigh outward so that the center of
the left knee cap is in line with the center of the
left ankle.
3. Exhale and bend your left knee over the left
ankle, so that the shin is perpendicular to the
floor. If possible, bring the left thigh parallel to the
floor. Anchor this movement of the left knee by
strengthening the right leg and pressing the outer
right heel firmly to the floor.
4. Stretch the arms away from the space
between the shoulder blades, parallel to the floor.
Don’t lean the torso over the left thigh: Keep the
sides of the torso equally long and the shoulders
directly over the pelvis. Press the tailbone slightly
toward the pubis. Turn the head to the left and
look out over the fingers.
5. Stay for 30 seconds to 1 minute. Inhale to come
up. Reverse the feet and repeat for the same
length of time to the left.
Beginner’s Tip:
When you bend the left knee to a right angle,
bend it very quickly with an expressive exhalation,
and aim the inside of the left knee toward the
little-toe side of the left foot.
Rosé or Pink
wines...
BY ‘WINE BUFF’ FRED FISHER
In ancient times winemaking was carried out
using primitive methods which did not involve
much maceration, leaving the skins with
the juice...
FOLLOW THE 5S’S
SEE, SWIRL, SMELL, SIP & SPIT OR SWALLOW
Even in Champagne during the
Middle Ages, wines were more red
than white until it was realised that
it was the skins that imparted the
colour to the wine.
After the Second World War the
Portugese started to produce a
slightly sparkling rosé wine called
Mateus Rosé.
Thus the wines were very lightly coloured.
As time progressed and the Greeks and Romans became
more into winemaking, the realisation that letting the wine sit
with the skins for a time led to darker more coloured wine.
This and others set records which
led to Rosés being taken seriously.
More recently ‘Blush’ wines have
become trendy, particularly White
Zinfandel.
DECEMBER 2016 | ISSUE #50 | FOOD & DRINK
METHODS OF MAKING ROSÉ
There are a number of ways of making Rosé wine
1. Press red grapes and allow maceration, leaving
the pressed juice and the skins together for 12 to
24 hours. The juice will absorb colour from the
skins, the longer the time the deeper the
colour. Pinot Grigio is unique in this
respect as it has naturally pink
skins. Therefore Pinot Grigio can
be pink or white.
2. Saignée or bleeding. Where
during red wine fermentation
juice is drawn off the must then
it would be light red. The main
purpose of this was to concentrate
the colour of the remaining red wine.
This is not thought to produce a true rosé and in
many instances was discarded.
3. Blending. A small quantity of red wine is
added to white wine to produce a Rosé wine.
The colour can be carefully controlled. This is not
permitted in the EU except in the production of
Rosé Champagne. Many however are made in the
New World which can be inexpensive with varied
qualities.
ROSE FROM AROUND THE WORLD
FRANCE
Provence – Most of the production in this area is
Rosé, around and between Nice and Marseilles.
Tavel - This lies in the Southern Rhone and is
unique for Rosés. Grenache again is the chief
grape but other grapes from the Rhone area
are used.
Loire – Rosés in the Loire Valley have a long
history with Rosé d’Anjou and Cabernet d’Anjou
dominating. The former uses the Grolleau grape
while the latter the Cabernet Franc and Cabernet
Sauvignon grapes, mostly Cabernet Franc.
Cabernet d’Anjou has the ability to age.
Champagne – Two methods of making Rosé or
Pink Champagne exist. Skin contact or the
addition of some red wine, using mostly
Pinot Noir. The colouring can range
from a very light pink to light salmon
pink. One odd Rosé from the Aube
Department entitled Rose des Riceys
is a still wine and is described as one
of France’s more serious still Rosés.
Other areas of France making Rosés
include Languedoc Rousillion, The Jura,
Beaujolais from the Gamay grape and
Bordeaux.
ITALY
The Pinot Grigio grape being pink in colour can
have extended maceration to get the colour
although most is produced as white.. Other pink
wines called Chiaretto or Ramoto, are produced in
many parts of Italy e.g Abruzzo, Veneto, Trentino
Alto Adige, Friuli, Calabria, Apulia and Sicily. In
Tuscany a particularly sweet wine is made called
Vin Jaune from the Sangiovese grape.
SPAIN
Known as Rosado, the most noted region is
Navarra. The Grenache predominates but other
varieties are used such as the Tempranillo.
PORTUGAL
As mentioned before Mateus Rosé was a major
success, although still made it is not as important
as it once was. Other Rosés are produced with
demand from North America, in particular Setubal
near Lisbon.
Conclusions...
Compare the opposite ends of Rosé wine by getting a Rosé Des Riceys and a White Zinfandel Blush
to see the variation. Then infill with some from whatever country you wish. When you have finished
that, have a nice bottle of Rosé Champagne to celebrate.
Satis
House
Set in three acres of parkland,
tucked away just off the A12, is
the grand 18th Century, Grade II
listed Satis House.
Rachel Ducker was invited along to
spend an evening at the privately
run hotel and restaurant, here is
what she thought.
to the nearby coast,
trips to Minsmere nature
reserve, or visiting local
bustling market towns
such as Halesworth or
Framlingham, Satis House
provides you with the
ability to do all of this an more.
As we pulled into the private drive, the gravel
track lead us down to the magnificent façade
of this Georgian House, surrounded by an
array of trees that shielded the building and its
grounds from the outside world.
Suddenly, you feel like you are away from
everything and on this particular evening, this
was just what I needed!
‘Situated ideally for days out, from expeditions
With parking just outside the entrance, there
54

was no need to struggle for miles with bags.
Walking with bags is one of my pet hates!
As the cold hit me, upon entering the period
house’s large doors, I burst through, flustered,
feeling like an ever so less glamorous
Elizabeth Bennett. To my rescue General
Manager Neil warmly greeted me with a large
smile and put me right at ease.
“It was said that Charles Dickens
was a regular visitor to Satis House
when it was a private residence,
and the curious name actually pops
up in his book Great Expectations.”
So how did it measure up?
Our room for the evening was situated in one
of the hotels more recent editions outside of
the main house.
The eco pods are perfect for those who love
travel with their dogs. On this occasion we left
our Norfolk Terrier Archie with his grandma,
but one of these rooms would be an asset to
those travelling with their furry companions.
As we prepared for dinner, we
were keen to get back into the main
building to sample the menus we’d heard so
much about, from many of our friends and
family.
It promises that ‘whoever stays in the house
could wish for nothing more’. Quite a boast.
The one thing I can’t fault at Satis House, is
their customer service. Throughout our stay
every staff member we encountered made us
feel very welcome, and in particular the hotels
Head Chef, Ben Cliff.
It is unusual to see a chef away from his
kitchen; however, it is clear to see that Ben
takes pride in introducing his menu, he
cares about his customers and was great at
recommending his dishes.
Being my usual self, I was having trouble
deciding on what to order. Ben kindly
suggested that we should have a pre-dinner
cocktail at the bar whilst we were deciding.
This sounded like an excellent idea, so
barman Ollie sorted us out with a ‘Dark and
Stormy’ and a ‘Classic Martini.’ Whilst this was
happening, Ben also suggested we should
start with one of his freshly baked to order
specialties the N’Duja & Gruyere baked bread.
Now, I am not a ‘Gruyere’ fan but this bread
was out of this world. In fact it tempted me to
order more hastily to see what the rest of the
dishes would be like. So onto the meal...
I began with one of my favourite dishes
named Pan seared scallops with Bacon, a
Parsnip Puree and Apple. I have to admit that
these were by far the tastiest Scallops I’d had
in a long time.
My partner opted for the more elaborate
Crispy Lamb, with Gooseberry and radish
Salad. We were both really impressed with
our choices – although I still think I chose the
better dish!
Onto the main event, I chose the Moules
Mariniere, but with a twist. They were served
with a Fennel & N’Duja broth with Samphire
and a shot of Galliano. Absolutely stunning!
My partner selected the Beef served two ways.
It didn’t last very long and after having a little
nibble myself; I have to say the dish was very
yummy indeed.
After a short interval, my partner decided
to have a dessert, but I couldn’t manage
anything apart from a Paddy & Scott’s
Espresso Martini made perfectly by Ollie.
Though, when my partner received his Freshly
Baked Cookies and Ice Cream, I have to admit
I was a tiny bit jealous! On the whole the food
was delicious and well presented.
It was a truly enjoyable meal in a very relaxed
setting.
We would definitely recommend a
relaxing break away at this lovely hotel.
Satis House have some great Christmas
Stewart
Lee
After four years writing and performing his TV show Stewart Lee’s
Comedy Vehicle, ‘Content Provider’ is Stewart’s first brand new
full-length show since the award-winning Carpet Remnant World.
68

DECEMBER 2016 | ISSUE #50
CONTENT PROVIDER
Bounce Magazine were delighted to be invited along to review Stewart Lee’s
latest show, ‘Content Provider,’ at the Cambridge Corn Exchange...
Stewart Lee made his name in the mid-1990s
as one half of the radio duo Lee and Herring.
In recent years, Lee has been successful
in selling out large venues including the
International Convention Centre in his home
city of Birmingham as well as larger venues
in London. In December 2011 he won British
Comedy Awards for best
male television comic and
best comedy entertainment
programme for his series
Stewart Lee’s Comedy
Vehicle.
His new show ‘Content
Provider’ was especially
exciting as it gave us to the
chance to see material that
may have existed for that night only.
He had the crowd howling with laughter, from
Brexit to his Nan’s handmade S&M mask, the
new material is vintage Stewart Lee.
Primarily, it’s a show that mercilessly riffs
at the preoccupations of the under 40’s
and how mobile phones and technological
advancements have robbed us of our
imagination.
So many things had us in stitches; the
dissimilarities between Dating Agencies and
Tinder, the differences between Jazz and
Folk, but perhaps best of all was a surreal
pondering of the S&M practice between Lee’s
grandparents during the Second World War.
As the set unfolded, what seemed a clumsy
backdrop at first began to make sense. It
transpired that Lee has sneeringly scoured
the bargain buckets
collecting cut-price copies
of his rival comedians tour
DVDs. Making up an upcycled
mountain range, Lee
ascended the DVD boxes
in a dramatic climax, tying
the whole routine together
(of which we won’t spoil for
you!)
All good things come to and end and as we
gave our final applause, Lee suddenly bolted
from the stage. Unbenknown to us, he was
waiting for fans in the lobby ready to sign a
free copy of his new DVD that was given to
TREAT
yourself
With any luck your Christmas
shopping is coming to a close…
and there are just the odd few
bits to pick up.
BY RUBY REED
My Christmas shop
this year had its ups
and downs...
I never have been a fan on
the Secret Santa tradition!
In-between attempting
to find the perfect gift for
everyone, I couldn’t help
but keep my eye out for
something I could treat
myself to.
Let me reveal the website
that has easily become one
of my favourites to drop by.
You may well have heard of
‘Wowcher’. Wowcher.co.uk
offers such a wide range of products- but most
importantly at really discounted prices, such as up
to 80% off.
Just take a look at what they have to offer. There is
without a doubt something for everybody. Whether
you’re looking for your next holiday, haircut, beauty
treatment, day experience or educational course
even!
A weekend break to Venice from £69.00? Flights
included? If your first thought is too good to be
true, then you’re not alone. As I had exactly the
same concern before my first Wowcher experience.
Well, I can safely say that several purchases later
I am yet to be disappointed. Things I have been
tempted by so far include two getaways, a course
of beauty treatment and electronics. The hotel that
greeted us was of a great standard and we enjoyed
two days of spa access and three course meals!
74

DECEMBER DECEMBER 2016 | 2016 ISSUE | #50 ISSUE | #50 LIFESTYLE
On this trip we saved 40%.
The Wowcher website
has a convenient set
up. If you can pull your
attention away from the
fantastic offers you can
use the filters to aid your
search. Simply put in your
location if you want to
be presented with offers
near to you, or select
a category i.e. travel or
beauty.
There is so much to
choose from and so
much money to save!
My favourite purchase to
date was an IPL Laser hair
removal treatment.
Something I would not
have tried had the price
not been so tempting,
as normally this is very expensive.
The treatments have been great- nice
location and lovely staff.
cannot possibly feel guilty, because of
all the money you saved… Have a lovely
Christmas! Talk to you next year.
Follow me on Twitter @rubyslifestyle.
Ps. If you haven’t quite finished your
shopping, everything can be brought as
a gift!
So if you need a reward for finally
finishing buying for everyone else, end
the year by treating yourself- and you
Orchard Barn, Mill Lane, Thurston
guide price of £775,000
Newly built by Grovesbrook Homes, Orchard Barn is a stunning home built to an
exceptional standard, displaying high quality features complemented by luxurious
accommodation with an emphasis on character and personality.
Standing within half an acre of private part-wooded
grounds, the house is one of only three outstanding
properties that form this exclusive superior
development in one of the area’s most popular
villages, discreetly tucked away along a quiet lane.
The build quality is outstanding, with traditional
materials used throughout including a clay tiled
roof-line and rendered and weather-boarded
elevations, offering considerable character yet with
all the benefits of modern living such as underfloor
heating and the energy efficiency of a new home.
Sherwood House
The owners of Sherwood House had previously lived
in traditional period properties, never having owned a
modern house before. They say: “Here, there is nothing
to do apart from live in the house – there are no draughts
to deal with or decorative tasks to address… We wake
up everyday and we’re just thrilled to be living here!”
Ashworth House
The owners say: “We love Tony’s (Grovesbrook Homes)
passion and ideas for the project, and the quality,
specifications and attention to detail achieved with the
finish is quite simply outstanding. We are truly overjoyed
with the results and we are so grateful to have benefitted
from Tony’s extensive knowledge and experience.”
CHRISTMAS HAIR ADVICE...
‘The Specialists’ situated on Risbygate Street, in Bury St Edmunds offer a
wide range of hair and beauty services operating from a three-story salon.
This month they bring you some top tips on how to style your hair for the
Christmas party season...
1) Go vintage
The bigger the hair, the better. Always backcomb and backbrush hair at
the roots for loads of volume. For a nice elegant look thats more styled,
use big rolls which can be created by Kirby-ing the hair into the opposite
side of the head. For classic vintage hair-ups, pair smokey-eye shadow or
glittery lips - they’ll rock any party dress.
2) Warm up those tones
Christmas is definitely the time of year to warm up your hair tone.
Auburns, coppers and chocolates are great for making your hair richer and
warming up your skin tone for this festive season.
Christmas
Starts
Here...
3) For the blokes
Male grooming is massive. More than ever gents aren’t afraid to express
themselves through their hair. Having a bit of length will give you the
freedom to change from relaxed and casual to sleek and tailored when
the occasion arises. Don’t be afraid to change partings, add a quiff or
even scrunch it and if you’re thinking about colour always go for ash and
masculine tones...stay away from golden tones.
Take the stress out of
Christmas and book your
appointment with
HOW TO LOOK
Amazing
THIS PARTY SEASON
Charlie Long brings you the Make up
secrets to have you shining bright this
Christmas.
Lips: Deep Blackcurrant
Dark, rich, striking hues are the leading trend for
this autumn/winter, with berry lips on show at
Rodarte, Marni and Erdem. The most dazzling
of all were the deep, dark, cherry lips at Louis
Vuitton and Dior. This hard yet stunning look
concentrates entirely on a full-bodied, rich dark
lip, whether it is burgundy, oxblood, purple,
chestnut or even black, however the finish is a
matter of personal choice. At Gareth Pugh, Bal
Garland added his own twist by adding sleek,
plump clear gloss. However, at Edun in New York
lips had a subtle sheen and remained soft and
delicate.
This beautiful
deep, burgundy
lipstick has cool
undertones with
a subtle ruby
shimmer. Mirana is highly hydrating with a creamy
lightweight texture.
Eye- Liner: Super-Graphic
Autumn/Winter 2016 allowed Make-up artists
shows. Graphic black liner could be seen at
the likes of Altuzarra, Kenzo, Oscar de la Renta
and Giamba. This season it is time to create
something a little different to the feline flick and
get experimental. Although black liner continued
to be the eyeliner of choice on the catwalks, an
array of colour was on show at Fendi, where Peter
Philips used green, purple, yellow, pink and blue
for his colourful creations.
The glitter shaker is similar to a salt
shaker; it allows you to sprinkle sparkly
glitter in your hair and body but can also
be used on your eyes.
Make-up Artists Choice -
Stargazer Cake Eyeliner Palette (www.stargazerproducts.com
- £25)
The palette contains wet cover colours that
enable to you to achieve fine detailed looks. You
can achieve many different looks as the colours
can be mixed like water colour paints.
Eyes: Glitter
When it comes to make-up, the embellished look
is usually set aside for festivals but this winter
do not be afraid to add a touch of sparkle to you
make-up look. On the catwalks, Burberry would
perhaps be the last place you would expect to
see glittery eyes but you are wrong. Burberrys
new Shimmer Dust could be seen on models,
diffused from the outer corners of the eyes across
the cheekbones. Glitter could also be seen on
show on the brow bone at Giambattista Valli and
all around the eyes at Jenny Packham.
CARLA MIREILLE JONES
Baby
It’s cold outside
Christmas is a time for celebrating, friends
family, religion etc.
It’s also cold, and the weather can take its toll
on our skin. As it’s party season too we want to
make sure we look our best. Now the winter is
here your skins needs are different. Christmas is
also often thought of with colour, deep greens
and reds are a good example.
With the cold wind, our skin can get wind burn,
so we need to make sure we keep it hydrated, no
matter what age. Clarins do a lovely Hydraquench
Cream Mask, which you can leave on for 15
minutes and take off or as I often do, what with
working outside a lot, leave it on over night to give
that extra boost.
Illamasqua is one of my favourite brands for
colour! I love their pure pigments. The colour is
strong so you only need to use a small amount
and they have one that looks like glistening snow,
perfect for those frosty nights. How to achieve
perfect red lips stick is something that I get asked
about a lot! Of course my old trusty favourite
is Dolce & Gabbana’s cream colour in devil red,
is a pure red, the one that Scarlett’s Johanson
wears in the D&G adverts. Dior have also recently
brought out a few matte lipsticks that are not
drying and have a red, the rouge colours in 999
matte, beautiful if your after that flawless look.
Last but not least, we can’t forget the base! If you
want your basecoat to look dewy and glowing go
with Giorgio Armarni’s Luminous Silk Foundation,
you can hardly feel it on your skin, your skin
appears healthy and luminous. It’s in my top few
foundations! Enjoy your Christmas and sparkle
with these products!
IT’S GETTING COLDER!
BY KATE LINES
Kates Top Tip : Grab a stiff brush and start
clearing paths of moss, lichen and weeds.
Frost, rainfall and winds are
increasingly common, sunshine
hours are much reduced and it can
be bitter with a risk of snow.
General
You may not want to be working outside at this time
of year, but luckily there’s not a lot to do.
wrapping insulation around them.
Bubble wrap is ideal and probably in plentiful supply
if you are ordering Christmas presents over the
internet!
Remember...
Clean and repair your garden tools and clock the
lawn mower in for a service.
Keep an eye on winter protection, and if you have a
greenhouse, make sure the heater works.
Don’t forget to protect pots and taps from frost by
New tools are always a welcome present, as are new
gardening gloves... especially good quality ones. It
doesn’t hurt to give Santa a few extra ideas to put
on your Christmas list!
SPORT
while David McGoldrick was once again on the
treatment table.
COULD THIS TRIO TURN THINGS
AROUND FOR MICK MCCARTHY
AND IPSWICH TOWN?...
I feel I have been a bit too negative
on this page in recent months.
It’s been hard. The football has been less
than entertaining, the crowds have dwindled
and many of those that have remained have
been happy to voice their disapproval –
even during games.
Social media, the
perfect platform to vent
frustrations, has been
predictably awash with
#mickout hashtags and
the like.
The first note should be
that the likes of Twitter
and fans’ forums are often
going to be filled by the
vocal minority.
Mick McCarthy still has a lot
of goodwill on the terraces
and certainly within both the
dressing room and the owner’s office.
He has time to turn the run of form, and the
lack of entertainment, around.
And while I have my doubts for quite a few
months now, the time has come to truly
judge the man in the Portman Road hotseat.
He could argue, rightly, that he has been
unfortunate with injuries – that he had no
choice to play the infamous Skuglas (Cole
Skuse and Jonathan Douglas) while Teddy
Bishop was injured.
Fair and accurate though they are, those excuses
cannot be used anymore.
McGoldrick is back, and almost firing after his
late equaliser against Rotherham and World Cup
qualifying cameo for the Republic of Ireland.
Bishop is finally getting a run of games under his
belt and while he has looked on the periphery of
some matches, class is permanent – when used
right.
Making up an exciting, if injury-plagued, trio of
talent is Jonny Williams who is also showing signs
of getting back to his match best.
One of those three would make a difference to
any Championship side. Add two or three to the
melting point and Ipswich should be climbing
back up towards those coveted top six spots.
Of course, by the time you read
this, any of the aforementioned
threesome could be back on the
sidelines.
Their injury record is dire and I
couldn’t have been the only one
watching the recent internationals
hoping and praying that they
return unscathed. Ipswich’s hopes
of achieving anything this season
rests on McGoldrick, Williams and
Bishop staying fit – and firing.
The trio could also be the
difference between McCarthy
winning back the fans or seeing
the #mickout grow stronger.
May I wish all the Bounce readers a very Merry
Christmas and Happy New Year.
ZIP WORLD
BY ROSS “ACTION MAN” WISHART
To end the year with a bang
Action Man zipped across
country to North Wales and to the
action filled adventure
playground that is ZIP WORLD!
The facility has received critical acclaim with
its range of activities available for all ages all
year round such as the dramatic ‘Bounce Below’
trampoline park set deep inside the Blaenau
Ffestiniog slate mine. ‘Treetop Nets’ ‘Plummet’
‘Skyride’ and ‘Zip Safari’ are a number of activities
available at their site in the Douglas Fir Forest.
But Zip World are of course most famous for one
thing, dubbed the zip line capital of the World
they offer two great experiences in ‘Velocity’ and
‘Titan’.
‘Velocity’ is the single longest zip line in Europe
and the fastest in the world. You’ll first be taken
on the Little Zipper just for a taster and to build
your confidence before you take on the Big
Zipper on which you can hit speeds over 100mph
across the Penrhyn Quarry.
‘Titan’ is found at the Blaenau Ffestiniog slate
mine (same location as Bounce Below to make an
ideal double header) and is the largest zip zone in
Europe, where 4 people can travel simultaneously
side by side on separate lines.
You’ll travel on the separate runs Alpha, Bravo
and Charlie which combined means you’ll travel
over 2000m. Bravo is the longest and fastest
of the 3 runs, hitting speeds over 75mph from a
seated position which can be quite spectacular/
unnerving (delete as appropriate) as the ground
below you falls away into the mine.
Further details and bookings available at
www.zipworld.co.uk.
The scenery and experience is spectacular, it’s
certainly well worth the trip. Why not do what
AM did and make a weekend of it with a walk
up Wales’ tallest mountain Snowdon, camping
at the Llyn Gwynant campsite and then a short
20 minute drive to Zip World Titan at Blaenau
Ffestiniog. The area has recently been voted
the 4th best tourist destination in the world
thanks to the scenery and activities and it is
easy to see why (obviously not a patch on our
beloved Suffolk!) so make a new year’s resolution
to #getsomeaction and plan an Action Man
Weekend in North Wales.
If you have any questions then feel free to get in
touch and I’ll be happy to give you some pointers.
This month I’m also taking as on the 5km
inflatable obstacle course The Santa Run to help
the Ipswich Hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit
raise funds for a new neonatal ultrasound scanner.
Please support our effort by texting SRUN68 £5
COUNTRY SOBER
Country Sober’, in its entirety, echoes what’s fundamentally important
about the art of songwriting. It’s about space.
Minimal arrangements bring a reminder that
music is truly gripping when it’s given the
opportunity to flourish in the lightest of ways.
With tracks like ‘North Sea Blues’ and ‘Wild
Life’, it proves that songs should be structured
thoughtfully, with a natural crescendo.
Instruments that fold into each other’s sound
with grace and elegance; that’s what gives
music its emotive quality, when it captures
an organic process like a building, emotional
turmoil.
Vocally, it matches in
it’s hereditary delivery.
Ducker’s voice soothes,
with emotion being the
intrinsic value. It washes
neatly into the wake of
reverberated sound.
Similes in the lyrics ‘like
a flower, like a bird’
display a delicate and transparent image that
personifies Ducker’s approach to songwriting
as a solo artist.
There are certain moments where you can
wince at cliché; the opening line of ‘New
To Me’ (“With my last cigarette / I hold my
gaze towards the moon”) can give you an
inward shudder, in the same way as you may
recall early teenage poetry whilst in your late
twenties. But it comes from an honest place,
an honest voice. And it can be forgiven.
Influence is hard to draw from this record
(which is a good thing). In parts, it has the
roots of folk and country (perhaps an obvious
observation, with it’s title) embedded into
it’s storytelling. Gods and Demons emerge in
‘The Day We Threw It All Away’, with a heart
on the sleeve, of a man wise behind his years,
being shown bare.
Elsewhere, there are traces of electronic lean,
with London Grammar-esque sequences
bleeding into tracks like
‘The Painter Of The Sky’ and
‘I’m Gonna Lose’. Without
announcement, ‘Geyser’
creeps in with its gentile
post-rock sound, calling to
mind bands like Mogwai or
Explosions In The Sky.
Ultimately, it has the
impression of a record that’s been weaved
together from different periods of this artist’s
creative life, who’s daring enough to draw
the songs in an order that works, despite the
cyclone of different sentiments that inspire
each composition.
When the dust settles, there is space. And
that is what’s fundamentally important about
the art of songwriting. Ducker achieves that
rudimentary principle in a collection of deep
songs.
THEATRE
ROYAL
It’s that time of year again...
The Theatre Royal staff numbers swell considerably,
we have been joined by actors, wardrobe
assistants, stage managers, technicians and
musical directors to name but a few. Every
available dressing room and office space has
been crammed with creative people, they are
all working hard to make our 2016 pantomime
Beauty and the Beast a reality.
For the second year running rehearsals have been
held in the heart of Bury St Edmunds Town Centre
at Cornhill Walk, one of the loveliest things about
the panto is that the show is completely created
in Bury St Edmunds, the actors rehearse and live
here for a couple of months and hopefully get a
sense of the wonderful place which we call home.
Beauty and the Beast finishes our theatrical year in
style, it’s a show that is created for the fine people
Suffolk to enjoy, it opens on Friday 2nd December
and runs until Sunday 15 January. Throughout the
run we have a BSL interpreted performance on
Wednesday 14th December at 2pm and a Relaxed
performance on Friday 13 January at 1:30pm, the
Relaxed performance is bookable through the Box
Office only.
Although the year maybe coming to an end the
theatre never stops and we have just gone on
sale for our spring 2017 season. What a perfect
opportunity to take a look at a few highlights
from the new season...opening in February we
have Northanger Abbey, hot on the heels of panto
this is another Theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds’
production and is staged in the same year as the
200th anniversary of Jane Austen’s death. It will
open on Thursday 2nd February and runs until
Saturday 11th February before embarking on a
National Tour which takes in many towns and cities
across the UK. Towards the end of February London
Classic Theatre return with Hysteria, this company
are always a popular visitor to the theatre and this
show is a farce of epic proportions, when Salvador
Dali meets Sigmund Freud mayhem ensues. Other
dramas throughout the new season include Cyrano
by Northern Broadsides, which is an adaptation of
Edmond Rostand’s romantic comedy Cyrano De
Bergerac, which is with us early May 2017 and we
also see the return of the actors from LAMDA, the
world renowned acting school with a double bill of
As You Like It and Bury Fair both of which are here
during the last week of April.
Ballet lovers get to enjoy Giselle between Thursday
2 March and Saturday 4th March with Ballet Cymru
scheduled to visit on Saturday 27th May with The
Light Princess, a ballet that combines circus skills and
classical ballet, this one is perfect for families and
introducing any young ballet dancers to the art form.
2017 also sees the return of Once Upon a Festival, a
BY JACK STEVENS
MUSIC
Bury St. Edmunds alt-rock quartet
Fortunato are back in a big way.
Following the release of their
recent single ‘Angel’, Jack caught
up with them to discuss their new
direction, future endeavours and
the importance of settling in.
You’ve undergone some lineup
changes in recent times. How has
this affected the sounds of the
band in your eyes?
“We’ve been the same group of
people for over a year now so we’re
very much settled in, sonically we
work together really well - our
collective influences blend as a
band and I think that’s where our
sound really comes into its own.”
‘Angel’ is characteristically
Fortunato, but with a heavier
influence lurking into the sound.
Was that a conscious decision, and
what influenced this?
“Angel started off quite downtempo
and it didn’t necessarily
feel natural to us. That’s where it
developed into an angsty song -
through our desire to just be loud
again. We still played around with it
dynamically which is something we
try to implement into a lot of our
songs to evoke emotion.”
It’s always great to hear new music
from you. When’s the next taste
coming? What’s the long term plan
(Album, EP)?
“We’re probably going to bring out
a string of singles. We’ve kept a
lot of things on the down-low over
the past few months, hence the
spontaneity behind the release of
‘Angel’. We’ve got some ideas in
the works but we’ve never been a
band that wants to rush anything
through.”
See you next month - Jack
TOP DOG GIFTS FOR CHRISTMAS...
Christmas isn’t just about humans, it’s
also about us pets. Dog parents - if
you are struggling for ideas let me
help you out. Here’s my wish list...
#1: A new bed
For dogs that like to burrow and make a nest
when they sleep, a new bed is perfect for cosy
winter nights.
#2: Stuffed dog toy
Perfect for big dogs playing fetch, or dragging
and shaking for terrier breeds.
#3: Christmas Dog Antlers
Christmas isn’t complete without a comedy
outfit for your us four legged friends. From
Christmas hats and reindeer costumes to Father
Christmas and snowman outfits, every pooch
needs a Christmas dress up day. I have many in
my closet!
#6: Advent Calendar for Dogs
Doggy advent calendars - who knew such a
thing existed. But why not give your pooch
a treat every day during the countdown to
Christmas? I have mine ready!
I absolutely love Christmas… my favourite part
is ripping open the paper of the presents, so
for a little added fun, make sure your gifts are
wrapped. Note: don’t leave them under the tree
before hand, we can smell there is something
special inside!
Merry Christmas to all! I will be back in 2017
with more of my adventures!
Christmas outfit for their dog, but just want a
simple, cosy coat in on-trend coat, then this is
the gift to go for.
#5: Chuck with Ball
Perfect for dogs that want to play fetch all day.
