This catalogue “MONUMENTAL PAINTINGS for collector’s eye”
was created for the presentation of the monumental paintings of artist,
Uroš Paternu, academic painter master for the period 1996 - 2007,
In developing his own, unique and artistic visual language.
With his individual approach to the issue and exploring abstract painting he has left a strong
personal expression and inexhaustible mastery of color and form in contemporary painting.
In the catalog are selected 27 paintings, which were exhibited in five solo exhibitions during this
period. Accompanying texts are from the catalogs of exhibitions.
His paintings demand a mature viewer who will be able to surrender to sensory perception and
allow a reciprocal contact with the painting in re-creating of the view.
Uroš Paternu's first individual exhibition in 1998 displays creativity based on the author's
expressive mastering of colours. His effort is directed mostly towards capturing the precise
artistic sensitivity as the mode for embodying the spiritual movements and overlapping of the
concrete everday world. Out of the consistency of the rectangular, other strained geometric
forms and relations among colours spanned between the magic intensity and chosen
hollowness, the colourful fullness and the translucence of the veil additional to the new and
only artistic reality becomes sophisticated and eyepressed on aesthetic and spiritual level only.
The painting is the initiation of the spiritual concentration, it is the arena of the author's artistic
accommodation and the strictness of the form that enables the painter to percieve the freedom
of the poetic dreams and contemplation.
The paintings of Uroš Paternu – with their refined application of colour combinations, often
weighed to the extreme, yet always deeply intuitive – remind the spectator of spiritual states
impressed in the deep darkness of colour and animated by a tamed gesture, of feelings born in
contemplation and offering to the sight a scale of veiled anticipation covered with sounds of
aesthetics within the music of colour.
3 Uros Paternu©1996, Untitled, Acrylic on canvas, 145 x 200 cm
5

The author strictly classifies his emotions and visual impulses into a new system each time.
Simultaneously he lets the openness to spread through the frames of composition and through
the rifts. The openness is revived by the pure life pulse turned into the snowing of colours and
refined flashes, decantation and gradation of shades. The concealed richness is breathed into
the apparent asceticism and accordingly the author himself is searching for the contact with the
most noble among the masters of brush that have ever existed.
4 Uros Paternu©1999, Untitled Acrylic on canvas, 110 x 130 cm
Everything created by an author of such a harmony in character, of such a sensitivity for colours
may only turn into an organic whole addressing the spectator in silence and with discetion –
even when the red colours are sensual and intense. It is like a concealed rhythm of some inward
movement or a stilness bringing to life some happening – or just its veiled premonition. This
restrained expressiveness, this veiled theatricality are joined by the mystic zen-coloured glance
to the transcendental spiritual fullness creating a bond between the experience of the
expressive abstract art and the eastern meditation.
5 Uros Paternu©1996, Untitled, Acrylic on canvas, 145 x 200 cm
7

Contemplative fulfilment of the silence of the invisible where the visible and the denied
apprehensive world, gradually turning its noble musical sensitivity into artistic sacral and is
therefore poetically sincere and systematically in search for meaning, is sensed in the procedure
of mastering colours and shapes.
6 Uros Paternu©1998, Untitled, Acrylic on canvas, 110 x 160 cm
8

Uroš Paternu concentrates on a systematic and in-depth artistic research of the role and
functions of the visual image or the possibilities of expression with primary artistic means
(colour, brush strokes and the forms applied with them) and of their constellation as a
possible expression of the painter's inner experiential world.
7 Uros Paternu©1996, Untitled, Acrylic on canvas, 145 x 200 cm
9

Each painting is the carrier of its own meaning and all of them together are searching for the
mode to establish art of painting in its spiritual dimension. This mode is searched for at its basic
non-figurative position based on the constellation of non-alusive colours and shapes.
8 Uros Paternu©1998, Untitled, Acrylic on canvas, 110 x 160 cm
10

Colour represents the fundament, the primal starting point for the painter. With restrained
accents he fills it with traces of his inward harmony, combining their dynamics or their static
into an image. This appears as an autonomously organised, organically grown issue coming to
life only in co-existence with the spectator, who yields to the image and is ready to experience it
as musically coloured meditation.
9 Uros Paternu©1999, Untitled , Acrylic on canvas, 110 x 130 cm
12

11 Uros Paternu©1998, Diptych n. 2, Acrylic on canvas, 110 x 130 cm
13

The art of painting becomes musical poetry, so clearly congruent with the deliberate taciturnity
of the author, who even in his most dynamic gestures remains dark in his aesthetics and
delicate in his restraint.
12 Uros Paternu©2006 , Untitled, Acrylic on canvas, 130 x 160 cm
14

The contemplative Paternu is self-controlled in directing himself towards the firmness and durability in
which he finds the strenght and changes the never lasting moments into his inner life, controlled,
directed and placed into stillness of the painting controlled by the colour that is the basis of his spiritual
determination. The beliefs that direct the individual to the apprehension of space, as the all-comprising
colourfull music that fulfils the soul. The imaginated pictures are arranged and become independent
although tied together by the colours.
13 Uros Paternu©1998 Untitled, Acrylic on canvas, 145 x 200 cm
15

The contemplation that the painter wants to interpret through its procedures and principles so
characteristically intercepted with the auto-reflexive description. This concentration, contemplation and
experience are woven into the basic construction of each painting, shining through the layers as a dull
secret that unvells to the spectator step by step only. There is no first effect, the author's seriousness is
expressed and the serenity achived by long and hard work so obviously shown. Through the author's
attitude to colours and shapes the painter's inner sensibility is meticulously depicted or glowing through
its works as a picture on the vague surface of a muddy mirror, voiced congruentl with its architecture
and sensitivity to colours.
14 Uros Paternu©1999 Untitled Acrylic on canvas, 111 x 161 cm
16

With no aspiration for a unifed personal style as an expression of his unique individuality, the
author is trying – starting wich each single painting – to light up the harmony of colours and
gestures, the transparency of surfaces, the palimpsets anticipation of deep layers, and then to
tune these up with a perfectly controlled yet relaxed spiritual glow or glance. This glance speaks
of an intimate personal expirience, of a self-denying human rapture, an it changes the art of
painting into a means which helps us arrange, release and control our desires and energies.
15 Uros Paternu©1996, Untitled Acrylic on canvas, 130 x 160 cm
17

16 Uros Paternu©1998, Diptych n 2, Acrylic on canvas, 110 x 130cm
18

The artist's inward tension is transformed into live aesthetic harmony through which the hidden
fire, the cosmic depth and the immense darkness are tamed and turned into tranquillity –
polyphonic in its interpretation, vivid in its colour, and self-sufficient in its dialogue with
spectator.
17 Uros Paternu©1999, Untitled, Acrylic on canvas, 130 x 110 cm
19

The mode can be sensed in the unrestrained but contemplative feeling which is rediscovered in
the colours and strengthened in its countinuos system as the carrier, simultaneously
constructed by each painting alone.
18 Uros Paternu©2004 Untitled, Acrylic on canvas, 110 x 160 cm
20

The inner impetuses are not coincidental or impulsive, but carefully planned and premediated
strokes and contours, which nurture the ungraspable experience of Being. His paintings offer no
room for everyday trivialities, as the artist delves into quest for the inscrutable existential
impetuses.
19 Uros Paternu© 2001, Acrylic on canvas, 80 x 100 cm
21

20 Uros Paternu©2004, Untitled , Acrylic on canvas, 110 x 160 cm
22

The contents not transformable into words because it was drowned into irrational existence of
the picture as if it was the invisible presence of the silent harmony enabling us to enter into our
own inner centre. Never concrete, always only suggested or illusory figuration, which emerges
and disappears in the abstract world of Paternu’s paintings functions as a cohesive syntax
connecting the otherwise compositional disassociations. Its main purpose is to gather the
dispersed attention of the spectator and hold it – even if on the level of the subconscious – in a
semantically tangible concentration. And only here the search for the message begins.
21 Uros Paternu©2002, Untitled, Acrylic on canvas, 100 x 100 cm
23

22 Uros Paternu©2005, Untitled, Acrylic on canvas, 130 x 160 cm
24

For it is then that the scattered and seemingly arbitrary energetic surges join and thicken into
associative figural components that evoke images of veiled human beings and strange
mysterious bodies, an interplay of meaningful movements and theatrical gestures, facial
contours and a glimmer of dancing shadows, overlapping each other in a whirlwind of emotions
and a furious pace of passion.
23 Uros Paternu©2006 , Untitled, Acrylic on canvas, 130 x 160 cm
25

In certain most energetic places these components, assisted by sensory, emotional and symbolic
values of colours, manage to fuse into a dynamic theatrical performance, during which, as if in
yesterday's dream, the unconscious awakens and visualizes. The spectator, who imagines
himself as a director, does not even notice, when he turned into an actor.
24 Uros Paternu©2007, Untitled, Acrylic on canvas, 80 x 100 cm
26

The feeling of his inner-self is decanted into the anticioation of the absolute personality
embodied in the proportions and directions, in the motionless surface and caressing colours full
of harmony and peace. The search for harmony is endless.
25 Uros Paternu©2007, Untitled 02, Acrylic on canvas, 110 x 160 cm
27

He perceives the creative momentum as the opposition between the rational and the irrational,
the logic and the mystical, water and fire in his experience of the world.
26 Uros Paternu©2007, Untitled, Acrylic on canvas, 131 x 161 cm
28

The modern world only seem to be characterised by order, but under this veil there lurks an
emotional Contemplative fulfilment of the silence of the invisible where the visible and the
denied apprehensive world, gradually turning its noble musical sensitivity into artistic sacral and
is therefore poetically sincere and systematically in search for meaning, is sensed in the
procedure of mastering colours and shapes.void, hovering the rational field. The painter strives
to fill this gap, which is shown in the inner dialogue of his paintings, whose form reflects the
contraditions at a higher level of reciprocity between the order and the chaos.
