Welcome to the sixth issue of Dee Shoots NYC Magazine! For November/December’s release, I’ve got some 

wonderful shots to share with you. Your continued support is highly appreciated! 

It’s a pivotal time: this year’s presidential election may prove to be the most important ever. Its aftermath 

is sure to influence events for a long time; not just in the United States but all over the world. I hope you 

made an effort to vote. Your voice matters, regardless of which side you choose! 

In this issue, you see New York City in one of its most eventful seasons. With the first ever Harlem Comedy 

Festival and the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, catch a glimpse of two very exciting atmospheres. You

tarting in 1924, 

the annual 

Thanksgiving 

parade began by 

Louis Bamberger 

in Newark, New Jersey 

was transferred to 

Macy’s In New York 

City. It is the secondoldest 

Thanksgiving 

parade in the country, 

tied with the likes of 

America’s Thanksgiving 

Parade in Detroit. It’s 

an event that has been 

televised since 1952 by 

NBC, and is always held 

on Thanksgiving Day 

beginning from 9:00 

a.m. EST.

In the first parade, there were floats, live animals from Central Park Zoo and professional bands. 

Employees dressed in colorful costumes marched to the Macy’s flagship store on 34th Street. 

It was such a success that it became an annual event, and the rest is history. In 1927, the live 

animals were replaced by large, animal-shaped balloons.

Charlie Brown, Greg Heffley, and Trolls appeared 

as balloons in the 89th annual parade. The 

Parade also features musical performances by 

both established and up-and-coming singers 

and bands, in addition to other performances. 

With appearances by Jordin Sparks, Cirque du 

Soleil’s Dreamseeker, and the cast of Sesame 

Street with Questlove, another electric parade 

went down in the books.

Despite being a hub 

for arts, culture and 

entertainment for 

over one hundred 

years, there’s never 

been a comedy 

festival celebrating 

the impact of 

Harlem, New York on 

the world of comedy. 

That is, until now.

The Harlem Comedy Festival includes 4 stand-up competition events, 

15 competitors, two all-star showcases, four day film series, and a finale 

improv showcase.

Of the twelve comedy festivals of 

many types that happen all over 

New York’s five boroughs, this is the 

only to take place in Harlem; a place 

of great historical significance. The 

festival will highlight performers 

of color in New York, and bring 

light to the heavily discussed issue 

of comedy’s lack of diversity. The 

festival is a great opportunity to 

inspire others by shining a light on 

existing talent, as each competitor 

will perform at least three times.

Differing from your typical 

comedy festival, the 


departs from the usual 

theme. In showcases, 

the headliner is the main 

draw and other features 

and acts perform once 

at most. In competitions, 

one comedian will move 

on from each round and 

perform twice at most.
