Side Trips
God’s hand of protection was clearly over
me last week Friday during our first taste
of winter weather. I had a meeting in
Sioux Center at 9 a.m. that I didn’t want to reschedule,
so I budgeted
extra time and went on
my way.
Leaving Sheldon on
Highway 18, conditions
were messy, but tolerable.
The worst part was
getting bunched up in
traffic, as the visibility
was kind of a problem.
Conditions deteriorated
as I traveled west.
When traveling in
winter weather, I take
MYRNA
WAGNER
the most heavily traveled roads, but in this
case I was feeling like the blacktop road might
be a better choice, so headed south between
Boyden and Hull.
I was traveling under the speed limit and at
a rate that felt safe for the road conditions, but
when I came upon a spot near a farm grove
where the slush was nearly twice as deep as it
had been, my car began to pull toward the left.
Ever so gradually I moved completely to the
wrong side of the road.
With no ability to steer, I just held tight to the
wheel, wondering if I would roll as I entered
the ditch, or enter head first. At the last possible
moment my tires grabbed hold and I began a
slow slide back across the road into the proper
lane.
It felt surreal as I regained control of my car
and continued driving. About a quarter mile
later I met a truck, and at the moment the reality
of what “could have been” hit me.
My hands started shaking and I breathed
a prayer of thanks for the protection that had
covered me.
