God’s hand of protection was clearly over 

me last week Friday during our first taste 

of winter weather. I had a meeting in 

Sioux Center at 9 a.m. that I didn’t want to reschedule, 

so I budgeted 

extra time and went on 

my way. 

Leaving Sheldon on 

Highway 18, conditions 

were messy, but tolerable. 

The worst part was 

getting bunched up in 

traffic, as the visibility 

was kind of a problem. 

Conditions deteriorated 

as I traveled west. 

When traveling in 

winter weather, I take

the most heavily traveled roads, but in this 

case I was feeling like the blacktop road might 

be a better choice, so headed south between 

Boyden and Hull. 

I was traveling under the speed limit and at 

a rate that felt safe for the road conditions, but 

when I came upon a spot near a farm grove 

where the slush was nearly twice as deep as it 

had been, my car began to pull toward the left. 

Ever so gradually I moved completely to the 

wrong side of the road. 

With no ability to steer, I just held tight to the 

wheel, wondering if I would roll as I entered 

the ditch, or enter head first. At the last possible 

moment my tires grabbed hold and I began a 

slow slide back across the road into the proper 

lane. 

It felt surreal as I regained control of my car 

and continued driving. About a quarter mile 

later I met a truck, and at the moment the reality 

of what “could have been” hit me. 

My hands started shaking and I breathed 

a prayer of thanks for the protection that had 

covered me.

WINTERFEST 

is on the way 

Hull is set to host its 

annual event on Dec. 1-3 

Now that the turkey has been 

eaten and the remaining crumbs 

of pumpkin pie have been consumed, 

Thanksgiving is over. It’s officially 

Christmas season. And it’s time 

to start shopping. 

Hull’s annual Winterfest celebration, 

set to take place Dec. 1-3, has 

plenty of fun activities for the family, 

but it also features lots of opportunities 

to check some of those gifts off the 

Christmas list. 

The event kicks off on Thursday, 

Dec. 1, with the business holiday 

open houses. Participating businesses 

in Hull will be offering holiday specials 

and, sometimes, some fun treats. 

There will also be chances to sign up 

to win Hull Chamber Dollars that can 

be used at any Hull Chamber of Commerce 

business. 

Friday evening, Dec. 2, will see 

a Painting Party by Creative Spirits 

at LeMeilleur Bakery & Barista. The 

cost is $45 and includes the painting 

lesson, painting supplies and materials, 

and refreshments including hot 

chocolate and other goodies. 

Even if your last name isn’t Monet, 

there’s no need to stress. These classes 

are for all ages of experience. Artists 

from Creative Spirits will walk you 

through the entire painting process.

Saturday, Dec. 3, features the most 

popular events of the Winterfest weekend. 

The Holiday Craft & Vendor Fair 

will be held in the Community Building 

gymnasium from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. 

There will be 50 vendors set up with 

all kinds of homemade and commercial 

items. 

“Our biggest event, by far, is our 

vendor fair. We have 50 vendors 

signed up, which is more than we’ve 

had in recent years,” said Shelly Van 

Otterloo, the executive director of the 

Hull Chamber of Commerce. “It’s 

fantastic, amazing. It’s going to be all 

festive and decorated and Christmas 

music will be playing.” 

The vendors are offering up a wide 

array of products for sale. 

“We’ll see all kinds of vendors from 

Pampered Chef and Thirty-One Gifts 

this year to a great lineup of homemade 

items,” Van Otterloo said. “If 

there are people on your list and you 

just don’t know what to get them, 

then this is a great event. There are all 

kinds of unique items that are great 

for that hard-to-shop-for person.” 

In addition to the vendor fair, there 

are a number of other things taking 

place on Saturday that you’ll want to 

check out. 

There will be a Gingerbread House 

Contest from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. in the 

Community Building basement. 

Across the street at First Reformed 

Church, they’ll be hosting a Cookie 

Walk from 9 a.m.-noon. 

“If holiday baking isn’t something 

you enjoy, but you enjoy eating them 

then that’s a great place to go,” Van 

Otterloo said. 

The Kids’ Carnival will take place at 

Bright Start Preschool from 10 a.m.- 

noon and will feature crafts and games. 

There will also be a homemade 

Soup, Sandwich and Cinnamon 

Rolls lunch served at the Community 

Building dining hall to raise funds for 

the Team Danita Cystic Fibrosis Fundraiser. 

Later that evening at 7 p.m., if you 

are a fan of Bingo then you should 

head to the American Legion building 

for Bingo Night. 

“The whole weekend is a great way 

to kick off Christmas, and it’s a great 

way to get a jump on some of that 

Christmas shopping,” Van Otterloo

Sinterklaas 

is coming 

to town 

Dutch tradition celebrated 

in Orange City on Dec. 3 

Kids in Orange City: You better 

watch out, you better not cry. 

You better not pout. I’m telling 

you why...Sinterklaas is coming to 

town. 

This Dutch interpretation of Santa 

Claus will be taking a break from, 

what I’m sure, is a very busy December 

schedule to visit the children in 

Orange City. 

The annual Sinterklaas Day celebration 

has been taking place for at least 

20 years and always occurs on the first 

Saturday in December. This year’s celebration 

is slated for Saturday, Dec. 3. 

The event will kick off on Saturday 

morning at the Stadscentrum in 

downtown Orange City at 10:30 a.m. 

as crowds will gather to welcome Sinterklaas. 

“What we do here in Orange City is 

have Sinterklaas come in on a horse 

and wagon with his helper and friend 

Piet,” said Randy Van Peursem, a 

member of the Dutch Heritage Boosters. 

“Then there will be a short parade 

down Central Avenue with a brass 

quartet playing Dutch songs. The kids

will follow.” 

The procession will head to the Orange 

City Town Hall where there will 

be lots of fun for the children. 

The children will get a little history 

about Sinterklaas, sing songs and 

watch a puppet show that will teach 

more about the history of the original 

Saint Nicholas, from whom Sinterklaas 

is derived. 

According to Van Peursem, Saint 

Nicholas lived from 270-343 A.D. He’s 

a historical fourth century Christian 

saint who was the Bishop of Myra. 

“Saint Nicholas was known for 

helping and for secret gift giving. He 

was a well-to-do bishop who would 

give gifts as well as pay dowries,” Van 

Peursem said. “That’s where Sinterklaas 

and Santa Claus comes from.” 

In the Netherlands, Sinterklaas 

comes in on a steamboat from Spain 

with his horse on Dec. 6. 

Children who attend the Sinterklaas 

Day celebration in Orange City will 

learn all about this and more. 

After getting some history, the 

kids will get to play some traditional 

Dutch games such as Drop the Carrot, 

a memory game with pictures of 

Sinterklaas and Piet, and Schieten Noten 

(also known as Shooting Nuts), 

which is an old, traditional game sort 

of like shuffleboard but they use walnuts 

and bean bags. 

Kids will then be treated with a large 

Dutch chocolate coin and parents can 

take pictures of their kids with Sinterklaas 

and Piet. 

The whole program lasts a little 

more than an hour and is completely 

free. 

It’s a fun event and both the kids 

and the organizers look forward to it 

every year. 

“I just love seeing the kids and the 

joy on their faces as they run around 

playing games. They also listen attentively 

to the story and the puppet 

show,” Van Peursem said. “They have 

smiles on their faces the entire time 

and that’s just really fun to see.” F

WINTER NIGHTS & 

HOLIDAY LIGHTS 

Estherville hosts annual holiday celebration on Dec. 1 

Horse-drawn hay rides, Christmas 

carolers and the opening 

of Santa’s house — sounds like 

a snapshot from a Currier and Ives 

painting. Or it could possibly just be 

the view down the street in downtown 

Estherville during their Winter 

Nights & Holiday Lights celebration 

on Thursday evening, Dec. 1. 

There will be plenty to entertain 

everyone in the family. 

“Downtown will be bustling with 

retailers open with great deals and 

sales, carolers, tuba players, hay rides 

and Santa’s House is open for the first 

time,” said Lexie Ruter, the executive 

director at the Estherville Chamber of 

Commerce. 

Santa’s House in downtown Estherville 

is open every Thursday night 

from 5-7 p.m. and Saturday mornings 

from 10 a.m.-noon. Kids can stop 

by and tell Santa what they want for 

Christmas. 

Another element of fun for Winter 

Nights & Holiday Lights is the horsedrawn 

carriage hay rides that are offered 

free to anyone who wants one. 

“We have the coolest horses that 

pull the wagon. I don’t think they are 

Clydesdales, but they are big, huge 

horses and they are so pretty,” Ruter 

said. “It’s a fun way to see the town all 

lit up.” 

Many of Estherville’s shops host 

open houses and have special treats 

like wine samplings or holiday goodies 

like cookies. 

After sitting on Santa’s lap, taking a 

tour of the brightly lit town in a horsedrawn 

hay ride and sneaking some 

goodies while doing a little shopping, 

the next sense to satisfy would be the 

ears. 

And Estherville has that covered, 

too. 

Carolers will be singing Christmas 

tunes as they roam the downtown 

streets. They also make stops in stores 

to delight the shoppers inside with 

some carols. 

In addition to carolers, event goers 

can tune their ears to Tubas. There 

will be two Tuba Christmas concerts 

during the evening. The show at 6 

p.m. will take place at the Estherville 

United Methodist Church and the 

7 p.m. show will take place at the 

Estherville Public Library. The 7 p.m. 

performance is a sing-a-long and all 

voices are invited to join in on the 

singing of some Christmas carols. 

Whether your tastes run to horsedrawn 

rides, carolers, shopping or 

Tuba Christmas, Winter Nights & 

Holiday Lights has something for 

everyone to enjoy. And over the past 

15 years the crowds have varied depending 

on the weather. No matter 

the weather, it’s a great way to spend 

some time enjoying the holidays with 

the whole family. 

“I love Christmas and our Winter 

Nights & Holiday Lights, Tuba 

Christmas celebration is a kind of oldfashioned 

night with carolers singing 

and the horse-drawn, hay ride and 

the lights,” Ruter said. “Every single 

building in downtown Estherville is 

lit up and you can ride a horse-drawn 

wagon looking at the lights. It’s a really

The year 2016 is the 43rd anniversary 

for Tuba Christmas 

concerts/events which are presented 

throughout the world. 

Tuba Christmas was conceived 

in 1974 by Harvey Phillips as a 

tribute to his teacher and mentor 

William J. Bell, born on Christmas 

Day, 1902. Through the legendary 

William J. Bell we reflect on our 

heritage and honor all great artists/ 

teachers whose legacy has given 

us high performance standards, 

well structured pedagogy, professional 

integrity, personal values and 

a camaraderie envied by all other 

instrumentalists. 

The first Tuba Christmas was 

conducted by Paul Lavalle in New 

York City’s Rockefeller Plaza Ice 

Rink on Sunday, December 22, 

1974.

Iowa Lakes musicians host 

Madrigal Feaste Dec. 3-4 

Harken back to medieval times with Iowa Lake Community College. For 

the 17th year, the music department will host its Elizabethan Madrigal 

Feaste. A night of merriment, music and a meal for many local lords and 

ladies. 

The feasting will occur two nights, Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 3-4 at the VFW 

in Estherville. Tickets are $20 but have gone fast. As of writing this article, there 

were just a handful left for either night, so if you miss out this time around, be 

sure to reserve a spot early next year. 

For those who’ve secured their spots, the VFW will once again be transformed 

into a castle fit for a king. 

Wassail toasts, medieval costumes and bread pudding will all be back, but 

some of the songs the students perform will have changed. 

“Some things always stay the same but we also do some different things every 

year,” vocal music director Brett Fuelberth said. “The jester tells different jokes, we 

sing different carols and we look at Christmas hymns people would know and try 

unique, different arrangements of Christmas hymns that people would know.”

Guests who’ve gone to the feast for 

many years will see new songs and 

also some new faces. 

“Being a two-year college it’s kind of 

nice to have about half the group that 

has done it before and can help others 

get prepared,” Fuelberth said. 

“We always have great groups of 

musicians and singers. I think it’s fun 

for the students who put a lot of work 

into it and are proud of their product.” 

That product is an immersive night 

recalling the feasts of plenty during 

the English Renaissance of the Elizabethan 

Age. 

Instrumental director Carol Ayres 

said that while they try their best to 

stick to music from the era, sometimes 

they have to stretch a bit. 

No matter when the music comes 

from, it changes from one feast to the 

next, and Ayres helps push her brass, 

handbell and recorder students to 

perform their best each year. 

“We always change our music, but 

some Christmas carols get repeated 

from time to time,” Ayres said. “We 

have a great group this year. It’s so 

much fun to have students be able to 

showcase their talents and find music 

that highlights their talents. The recorders 

are doing a really unique song 

this year.” 

At its heart the Madrigal Feaste is a 

celebration of the season and a showcase 

for the music students. 

“It’s great for the students to be 

able to perform for their family and 

friends,” Ayres said. “And everyone 

loves the bread pudding!” 

Whether it’s a joke from the jester, 

a song from the choir or a piece performed 

by the brass ensemble, guests 

can expect a fun evening bringing the 

Elizabethan era to life. F

The Elizabethan Age is the 

time period associated with 

the reign of Queen Elizabeth I 

(1558–1603) and is often considered 

to be a golden age in 

English history. It was an age 

considered to be the height of 

the English Renaissance, and 

saw the full flowering of English

JINGLE ALL THE WAY 

Familiar trio to present holiday concert

Damon, Dave and Ryan. Three 

musicians familiar to many 

in the Iowa Great Lakes. 

Specifically Damon Dotson, Dave 

Rowley and Ryan Sather, and once 

again they will be putting on a 

holiday show at the Pearson Lakes 

Art Center. 

The trio is set to perform Saturday, 

Dec. 3, at 7:30 p.m. Tickets 

range from $25 for non-members 

to $20 for members and $15 for 

students. 

And be sure to reserve those 

tickets early. The show attracts a 

large crowd and often sells out. 

“These three are well-known 

around here and throughout the 

community,” performing arts 

director Amanda Schindler said. 

“It’s fun to get them together. 

They’re hilarious, come up with 

fun stories and have a great time 

interacting with each other and 

the audience.” 

As a holiday show, there will 

be plenty of familiar Christmas 

tunes, as well as some original 

music, performed throughout the 

night. 

Some of those songs heard 

every year around this time often 

get a unique twist to amp up the 

entertainment. 

Maybe it’s a gospel or blues version 

of “Frosty the Snowman,” 

a funky, jazz version of “Jingle 

Bells,” or a reggae version of 

“Walking in a Winter Wonderland.” 

“There will be a little bit of everything 

and we mix in some originals,” 

Rowley said. “Of course 

people like to hear their favorites 

so there are some perennials we 

do every year that people like and 

want to hear. Damon does a great 

version of ‘Hallelujah’ by Leonard 

Cohen and I can’t say enough 

about what Ryan does with all the

arrangements is something he 

thoroughly enjoys. 

“Creating a fun take on all these 

familiar songs and adding our 

own flavor or twists to them is so 

interesting and fun to try to do,” 

Sather said. 

Both Rowley and Sather had 

played with Damon on their 

own before they all three came 

together to perform their holiday 

shows. Sather said they had a 

great synergy. The most challenging 

part is probably finding time 

to practice as all three have their 

full-time jobs to attend to when 

not playing music. 

Joining Damon, Dave and Ryan 

onstage will be local saxophone 

player Brian Moore as well as 

Joe Cuttell, an Iowa Rock ‘n’ Roll 

Music Association Hall of Fame 

inductee, on guitar. 

The result of having so many 

talented musicians on stage is a 

holiday show that has become 

a staple at the Pearson Lakes Art 

Center each winter. 

“We have a good time and it 

gets us all in the holiday mood 

and spirit of the Christmas season,” 

Rowley said. “When we 

walk in we want everyone to be 

able to enjoy themselves in the 

moment like we’re in someone’s 

living room all having fun together.” 

Spend even just a few minutes 

around Rowley and Sather and 

it’s clear they like to have a 

good time with these performances. 

“Damon is kind of like the 

front man and Dave’s mostly 

the comic relief,” Sather, who 

plays piano, said with a laugh. 

Rowley does sing and play some 

instruments as well, including 

the ukelele on a version of Roger 

Miller’s “King of the Road.” 

“It’s a lot of fun to put on 

this show. The feedback is 

so positive and the audience 

is great. I just feel 

honored to get to participate,” 

Sather said.

An old-fashioned Christmas in Worthington 

This December you can step back in time to experience an old-fashioned Christmas. 

The Nobles County Historical Society will once again be hosting their annual Old-Fashioned 

Christmas at Pioneer Village in Worthington, MN, on Thursday and Friday, Dec. 1-2 from 5-9 

p.m. Pioneer Village is a collection of historical buildings that would have seemed right at home at 

the beginning of the 20th century including a saloon, churches, a barn and various businesses like 

a dentist’s office. 

In an effort to raise funds for the historical society many years ago, at least 20, the group decided 

to host a special event at Christmastime. 

The event is only $5 and children 15 and under can enjoy it for free. 

In addition to a number of different venues for entertainment, children can also get the chance to 

see Santa in the Fire Hall. They can sit on his lap and share with him what they want for Christmas, 

and then they are given a bag with an apple and candy, all of which is donated to the historical 

society. 

The Fire Hall will also feature popcorn, apple cider, coffee and baked goods for sale. The Village 

Hall will have a bake sale as well as a number of other vendors.
