a comprehensive range of porcelains
whose timelessly elegant
formal idiom would outlive all
passing fads. The „Waves“ shape
first saw the light of day in 1996.
Whether smooth or subtly reliefmoulded,
pure white or handpainted
with richly detailed
natural motifs, this classic tableware
service is a real eye-catcher
without in any way being pushy.
We are celebrating the 20th
anniversary of Waves’ presence
on well-laid dining tables with
a very special new pattern. We

Our jubilee Golden Berry
pattern marries the ripe
beauty of the rowan tree to the
classic formal vocabulary of
„Waves“ to yield a magnificent
tableware service. The graphic
symmetry of Waves Relief
enters into a felicitous symbiosis
with delicate hand-painted
berries and leaves on our precious
porcelain, ably blending
the contrasting forces of
Nature into a finely balanced
whole. The golden berry has long
been said to possess special
qualities, something we can
but confirm. As well as looking
exceedingly classy on your
sumptuously laid table, a coffee
or dinner service decorated with
„Waves Golden Berry“ is also
bound to have an appetising

It is not for nothing that we
designate our work as being
hand-crafted art. True masterpieces,
after all, call for
technical aplomb coupled with
an artist’s loving attention to
detail – as is the case with our
tenderly hand-painted Golden
Berry motifs on Waves Relief.
Many of Meissen’s splendid
decorative schemes are painted
onto the glazed surface of
the already twice-fired porcelain.
This technique is referred to
as „overglaze painting“.
Each of the cherished pieces
has to undergo numerous processes
before it is complete; the
paints required are made to
jealously guarded formulae in our
Manufactory’s colour laboratory.
Before starting to work on a motif,
our porcelain painters mix the
paint powder in the precise

manner prescribed. Only when
volatile oils are added do the
paints take on the consistency
needed to apply them.
Once the motifs have been outlined
on the glazed porcelain
in pencil, the process of „laying
the painting on“ commences:
our painters use a brush or steel
pen to apply colours to the
porcelain one by one. The next
step involves their finishing off
the fine detail in each colour.
The painting is then supplemented
by decorative detail in gilt.
The ready-enamelled pieces
now need to be fired a third time
for the porcelain paints to make
their full impact. They melt at
around 900°C and fuse with the
glaze. In many cases, their colour
alters appreciably in the process.
The gilded decoration, to conclude,
is then burnished with an
agate stylus so as to bring out
its full radiant intensity – and subsequently
set any porcelain
fancier’s eyes gleaming.

First of all, a draft design of the leaves and berries in each motif is carefully produced on paper.
The Golden Berry pattern is applied with the deftest of brushwork.

PATTERN AND COLOURS
TO MATCH CELADON &
LIGHT BLUE
MAGICALLY BREEZY
Volatile oils are added to bring the paints to life.

Apale-blue sky as far as
the eye can see; the soft
mossy-green shimmer of woods
in the early-morning mist. Light
Blue and Celadon arouse a
pining for Mother Nature in their
beholder. Both colours reiterate
with great empathy nuances from
the chromatic spectrum used in
the hand-painted Golden Berry
motifs and give them room
to unfold their special beauty.
Pieces hand-painted in the
Golden Berry scheme are even
more effective when accompanied
by single items sporting
a Light Blue or Celadon ground –
like works of art in a worthy
though low-profile frame.

CELADON
Deriving from a glaze widespread
during the Ming Dynasty
in China, celadon’s soft green
hue recalls precious jade and
is resonant with confidence,
harmony, freshness and vitality.
It underscores the naturalness
of the finely wrought Golden
Berry pattern without seeking to
outdo it.

LIGHT
BLUE
This bright, lovable shade of
blue conjures up visions of a day
by the seaside. Its airy lightness
sits well with the hand-painted
Golden Berry motifs whilst also
reinforcing the symmetrical texture
of the Waves shape.
