This month Gary Heywood-Everett has written a very interesting<br />
article on ‘Rochdale’s Wartime Christmas’. During World War<br />
Two, children living in Rochdale had no knowledge of a normal<br />
Christmas as a black-out and rationing was in force. Restricted<br />
travel meant a ‘stay-at-home Christmas’ for many. There’s also<br />
a quiz which tests your knowledge of Christmas in 1943!<br />
We hope you have enjoyed receiving your Streetwise copy each<br />
month; certainly we have had some great feedback from local<br />
residents who find it relevant as well as a useful guide to<br />
everything that’s going on locally. Once again this year we have<br />
covered some very important local issues and intend to continue<br />

Rochdale’s Wartime Christmases<br />
Very young children during World War 2 had no knowledge of a normal Christmas. As the Rochdale<br />
Observer in 1942 put it : ‘The beautifully lighted shops, the host of good things tastefully displayed<br />
in the windows and the busy scenes in the evening streets – all are missing for the time being,<br />
but they will come again and to that time we can all look forward with confidence and hope.’<br />
Things were very different then. A black-out and rationing was in force, there was advice from the Ministry of Fuel and<br />
Power to use less coal : ‘5lb of coal saved will purchase 100 bullets for a Bren gun,’ church bells were not allowed as<br />
this signalled invasion and there was a debate about closing cinemas on Sundays due to possible enemy action. Restricted<br />
travel meant a ‘stay-at-home Christmas’ for many although there was free bus travel for servicemen and women funded,<br />
some say, by Gracie Fields.<br />
Life had to go on though, <strong>Bamford</strong>’s advertised Christmas gifts (ladies brush set at 3/6 and gold signet rings for 5/6)<br />
and ten cinemas kept their doors open. Ellen Smiths offered tours and the Carlton and other ballrooms in town ran<br />
dances throughout the war, H M Forces admitted at reduced price.<br />
Food shortages meant austerity. Lancashire Cheese and suet were in short supply and there was an embargo on the<br />
supply of turkeys, one reader’s letter to the Observer suggesting that there was a 1000-1 chance<br />
of getting one in Rochdale over Christmas. Even so, local grocers had offers, Duckworth’s ‘Christmas<br />
Fare on the home front’ offering Christmas Puddings from 9d to 3/6 and Redmans (‘will serve<br />
anybody’) selling dried eggs at 1/- a quarter.<br />
However, a small family’s meat ration would get only a<br />
small chicken for Christmas dinner. Fruit and nuts were<br />
nowhere to be found so the Christmas cake was plain if you<br />
had one at all. There had been an appeal for people with<br />
allotments and gardens to grow food for crops ‘early digging<br />
leads to healthier crops,’ the advice being to be thrifty but<br />
to have a good time. And the Ministry of Food offered a<br />
‘Recipe for War and Peace Christmas Pudding’ suggesting a<br />
cupful of grated potato and raw carrot as filler ingredients.<br />
Outside of buying from Toy Fairs, children’s Christmas gifts<br />
were often homemade and fashioned from recycled materials.<br />
There was no wrapping paper due to the Ministry of Supply<br />
drive to conserve materials and Christmas cards were often hand-written.<br />
Charity abounded though. The Observer ran a Cigarette Fund for servicemen<br />
and Mayor Ernest Thornton in 1942 asked Rochdale people to host soldiers<br />
over Christmas who were away from home. 50 households signed up<br />
although the scheme fell flat as too few serviceman took up the offer. A
similar scheme ran in 1944 for Free French Forces<br />
(‘preferably in twos’) stationed in Manchester.<br />
Gifts for servicemen were collected (a cornet and a<br />
wireless requested by two soldiers in 1941 !) as were<br />
Red Cross donations for prisoners of war sent in time<br />
for Christmas Day. Presents were also distributed by the<br />
Prisoner of War Committee in Rochdale to the children<br />
of PoWs and a ‘jolly party’ held at Champness Hall for them, 60 children<br />
receiving 10/- each. The Observer noted that ‘We hope that next year their<br />
daddies will be back with them.’<br />
In 1943 men of the Rochdale Fire Brigade made presents such as wooden<br />
pull-along trucks, pull-string figures, pencil cases and dolls which were given<br />
out by Father Christmas at the Fire Station Christmas Party, two comic firemen dressed up as reindeer accompanying<br />
Santa.<br />
Times were very hard for soldiers and civilians alike, particularly at Christmas. However, it seems that Rochdale people<br />
– as always - made the best of what they had.<br />

year’s North West in Bloom competition, staged by the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS).<br />
This is the sixth time that Rochdale’s community-lead team have entered the<br />
competition in search of the top prize but, after a string or near misses in previous<br />
years, Rochdale Township finally made <strong>2016</strong> a golden year. Rochdale’s entry which is<br />
coordinated each year by a committee of volunteers and supported by the Council’s Environmental<br />
Management team, highlights some of the best horticultural projects from across the Township and shines<br />
a light on some of the amazing work being done by community groups, schools, businesses and residents,<br />
alongside more structured municipal planting. When the RHS judges visited back in July, they commented<br />
positively on the way in which Rochdale focuses on community involvement.<br />
The Gold Award came following a lengthy list of individual accolades for businesses, projects and<br />
attractions around the Township which included:<br />
l Gold Medal & Overall North West Champion for Springhill Hospice in the Best Hospice Grounds category<br />
l Gold Medal & Overall North West Champion for Zen Internet in the Best Commercial Premises category<br />
l Gold Medal for The Flying Horse in the Best Small Accommodation category<br />
l The Heritage Award for the reopening of the River Roch<br />
l Silver Gilt in the Best Town Centre category<br />
l Outstanding Achievement for the Cutgate Alley Gate Scheme<br />
l Outstanding Achievement for Jubilee Park in <strong>Norden</strong><br />
l Outstanding Achievement for Moss Row Allotments<br />

Many more awards were also received in Both Heywood and the Pennines under their individual entries, making this a truly<br />
incredible achievement across the whole borough. The Worshipful, The Mayor of Rochdale, Cllr. Ray Dutton, was on hand to help<br />
receive the awards along with committee members, and staff from the Environmental Management team, he said: “I am<br />
delighted to have been the Mayor in a year that Rochdale Borough had done so exceptionally well.”<br />

Rochdale Celebrates Golden Success at ‘In Bloom’ Awards<br />
Rochdale Township in Bloom Chairman, Nigel Morrell said: “This year’s victories are the<br />
culmination of six years of consistent effort by volunteers from throughout the Township. This<br />
year we have undoubtedly benefitted from the involvement of Rochdale Town Centre<br />
Management Company as well as increased support from Rochdale<br />
Councils Environmental Management department. Our Success<br />
along with that of Heywood and Pennines in Bloom groups<br />
makes Rochdale a key player in RHS in Bloom in the North<br />
West.“<br />
Vice Chair and Schools Coordinator, Roy Down commented: “This<br />
year’s results are a testimony to the efforts put in by our team<br />
and groups representing all sections of the community in our town.”<br />
An event at Rochdale Town Hall is now to be planned to congratulate all involved and to<br />
showcase the awards. However, even with such an achievement, there is no time to sit back and relax.<br />
Work is already well underway for the 2017 entry and the team are determined to ensure that Rochdale maintains the high<br />
standards that it has proven it is capable of showcasing.<br />

Mayor visits Ashworth Valley and<br />
meets the new Friends Group<br />
Mayor Ray Dutton was introduced to members of Friends of Ashworth Valley Group following a<br />
visit to Ashworth Valley Scout camp. He had a tour around the<br />
private gardens of the historic Ashworth Hall before seeing the<br />
newly installed planters and benches in The Fold. Afternoon tea<br />
was then enjoyed by all. The Friends group are repairing benches,<br />
installing new benches, installing tyre<br />
planters, planting flowers and daffodil<br />
bulbs and litter picking.

Neighbourhood Award<br />
<strong>Norden</strong>'s Jubilee park enjoyed "outstanding" success last month representing the borough in the RHS "Britain in<br />
bloom, Its Your Neighbourhood" awards. Going one better than last year, they<br />
achieved a maximum level 5, Outstanding, improving from last years level 4,<br />
Thriving. The judges were particularly impressed with the new planting in the park,<br />
cleanliness and the community involvement.<br />

Rich Chocolate Fruit Cake for Celebrations<br />
Recipe from Heather Williams<br />
Ingredients<br />
290g Sultanas<br />
290g Raisins<br />
115g Dried cranberries<br />
115g Currants<br />
50g Dried apple, diced<br />
50g Dried pear, diced<br />
115g Dark chocolate chips<br />
115g Glace cherries, quartered<br />
115g Glace ginger chopped or<br />
chopped ready to eat dried<br />
apricots<br />
115g Ground almonds (optional)<br />
310g Plain flour<br />
30g Cocoa powder<br />
5ml ground cinnamon<br />
5ml mixed spice<br />
Pinch ground cardamom<br />
340g English Butter, slightly<br />
salted<br />
340g Muscovado sugar or soft<br />
dark brown sugar<br />
6 large British free range eggs<br />
75mls brandy, optional (could<br />
use orange juice instead)<br />
Oven Temperature: Gas mark 2 or<br />
150C<br />
Tin: 20cm square or 23cm round,<br />
7.5cm deep cake tin<br />
Method - Line cake tin with a double thickness of greaseproof or<br />
silicone paper. Tie a double band of brown paper round the side.<br />
Place all fruits in a bowl and pour over brandy or orange juice. Leave,<br />
covered with cling film, overnight. Cream butter and sugar until light<br />
and fluffy, either by hand or machine. Break eggs into a jug and beat<br />
lightly to break up. Sieve flour, spices and cocoa powder and mix<br />
with ground almonds. Add a little egg to the creamed mixture and<br />
beat well, then add a spoonful of flour and mix in. Repeat this<br />
process until all the egg is incorporated. Stir in the fruit mixture,<br />
chocolate chips and brandy or orange juice. Pour into prepared tin<br />
and smooth the top. Make a 6cm hole in the centre, right down to<br />
the bottom of the tin. ( this will fill in as the cake mixture melts and<br />
then cooks and gives a flat finish to the cake) Cook for 4 to 4 ½<br />
hours or until a skewer comes out clean. Cool in the tin then remove<br />
paper and wrap in cling film then foil until ready to decorate with<br />
marzipan and icing. More brandy can be fed into the cake before<br />
storing. Better if matured for at least 1 month but will keep for at<br />
least 3 to 6 months.<br />
Gingerbread Buscuits<br />
Recipe from Heather Williams<br />
Method -<br />
Preheat the oven to gas 5 or 190C<br />
Mix flour, bicarbonate of soda, sugar and cinnamon or ginger in a bowl.<br />
Melt butter and syrup in a pan.<br />
Mix together to make a dough.<br />
Lightly flour a work surface and roll to 5mm thick.<br />
Use floured cutters to cut out shapes and carefully transfer to a baking<br />
sheet. Re-roll trimmings.<br />
Bake for 8-12 minutes.<br />
Leave on tray for 3 minutes to set then transfer to a cooling rack with a<br />
palette knife.<br />
Leave to cool then decorate with icing and sprinkles. Leave to set and<br />
store in an airtight container.<br />
Wash up and clean surfaces<br />

2 teaspoons caster sugar<br />
50g butter<br />
3 tablespoons golden syrup<br />

Friends of Jubilee Park -<br />
Halloween Party<br />
Goblins, witches and other frightening figures were out for some fun when the Friends of<br />
<strong>Norden</strong> Jubilee Party held their Halloween party. Around 250 children and their parents came<br />
to the park to attend the bash and organisers say the event, now in its second year, was a great<br />
success. Everyone rose to the occasion, with children dressing up in scary costumes with various fun<br />
activities on offer. Paul Ellison, chairman of the Friends of<br />
<strong>Norden</strong> Jubilee Park said: "We had a similar number turn up<br />
this year as we had the year before and everyone had a<br />
fantastic time. It was quite drizzly on the day, but since it was<br />
Halloween, nobody really minded the weather and it was very<br />
successful." There was also a visit from the Mayor and<br />
Mayoress of Rochdale, Ray Dutton and his wife Elaine, as well<br />
as councillors Jim Gartside and Michael Holly, who handed out<br />
prizes for the best dressed ghouls on the night. The Friends<br />
group is now looking ahead to their next event, the Christmas<br />
Tree light switch on in <strong>Norden</strong> Jubilee Park. Paul added the<br />
