John’s Jottings
Good afternoon everyone and welcome to Woodstock Park.
Our visitors are Hythe Town. Welcome to their Players, Officials and supporters and also to tonight’s
match officials.
This is our third meeting with Hythe this season. The first in the FA cup was eventful in so far as
Hythe had their goalkeeper sent off after only six minutes of the game. They, however, held on
fairly easily for the rest of the game and took the tie to a replay. The first half was fairly even. In
the second the referee cautioned Tom Carlse after 55 minutes for simulation when it looked a
clear penalty. That was the closest The Brickies got to getting a result from the match and the
last 30 minutes of the game was a nightmare for Sittingbourne, Hythe comfortably winning the
tie 5-0 which is our biggest defeat of the season.
Our last match here, Chatham Town looked to have secured a rare victory against us. Ricky
Gundry had scored for Sittingbourne in the first half but two second half goals from the visitors
looked enough to have won the game. However, in time added on at the end of the 90 minutes,
Conrad Lee put in a cross that was only just missed by Rick Gundry almost on the goal line.
Just behind him was Chatham defender, Marlon Patterson. The ball struck him and went into
the net, that must have totally devastated the Chatham team who need the points to get away
from the wrong end of the table.
After that it was a poor performance at Herne Bay that ended in a 3-0 defeat. Herne Bay are
another side at the wrong end of the table but in fairness they looked a fairly decent side. The
first goal came from ex Brickie Mark Lovell who unleashed a 30-yard shot that gave Overland
no chance. We never really got going against a team who seem very much to be a bogey team
to us.
Last Saturday it was one of our longest trips of the season to another team towards the bottom
of the league, Godalming Town. Godalming have had a recent change of manager and have
signed virtually a complete new team. Their results have improved since the changes. Despite
this I felt that we were always the better team on the day. We dominated the first half but the
second half was more even. That was until time added on at the end of the match (again) when
young Jake Embery got his head onto a Jordan Gallacher cross to give us the victory. This was
enough to get Jake into the Kent Messenger “Kent Team of The Week”. Leatherhead chairman
and our ex manager, Richard Brady, reminded me that the last time we played Godalming the
identical thing happened with Richard scoring the goal.
It was great to see our ex player Harry Smith make his debut for Millwall. He scored in both of
his first two games for the Lions.
On Tuesday, we visit Ramsgate. Our record against The Rams over the past few seasons has
been excellent. Come to support us to see if we can maintain it. Next Saturday we are home
again to East Grinstead Town.
If you are not a member of our lottery now is the time to join. The draw at the beginning of December
features a first prize of £500 and three prizes of £40.00. All other month’s have one
draw for £100 plus three prizes of £400. All other weeks there are three prizes of £40.00. See
me or John Cooper for a form to join.

Hello Everybody
The Remembrance anniversary was marked with great respect
this year and none more so than by non league clubs including
Sittingbourne. We had
a minutes silence at our home game against Chatham Town
and Herne Bay, and Godalming had a minutes silence at our
away games against them.
The wreath at our game went to France for a commemoration
there.
Sittingbourne of course is the twin town of Ypres where the
Menin gate memorial to the missing, dedicated to the British
and Commonwealth soldiers who were killed in the area
during world war 1 and whose grave is unknown. I've visited
the memorial and it's an incredibly moving experience.
Early evening since 1928 the last post has been played under
the Menin Gate memorial at 8 O'clock sharp.
Talking about the Godalming game I wrote in the last Programme
about the number of late goals in our games so far and
we again had a goal at 90 minutes plus, this time it was a stylish
header for us by young Jake Embery.
Godalming are newcomers to the league this season after a period
in the Southern league. They were bemoaning to me the
lack of coverage of their games by their local paper and radio,
which made me think how lucky we are with the excellent coverage
given to us by the Kent Messenger series of papers and
SFM radio as well as on occasions BRFM.
The football club is providing trees for the Christmas Tree Festivals at St Michaels Church in
the High Street and Tunstall Church. Why not go along and have a look; details of the two
events are below:
Hythe Town History
Hythe Town Football Club was formed in August 1910 although football in Hythe can be traced
back into the previous century. The club joined the Folkestone and District Leagues and after the
First World War had some success, four championships and only once outside the top three in
fourteen seasons. They moved up into the Kent Amateur League in 1936 and were promoted
into Division One before the Second World War intervened. The 50s and 60s saw little league
success but that changed in the early 70s with three successive league titles and a Kent Junior
Cup win. Hythe were granted senior status and elected into the Kent League in 1977, playing at
the newly acquired Reachfields, an old army sports ground on the edge of the town’s firing ranges.
The club were runners-up in the Kent League on three occasions but it was not until property
developer Tony Walton took over Hythe Town in February 1988 that things really started to happen.
That summer saw the ground developed to Southern League standard with seats and a social
club, with viewing balconies, above new dressing rooms. Standing cover extended behind one
goal and for the whole of the far side, and floodlights were installed. The ground capacity still remains
at 3,000 with the majority under cover. The chairman proved to be a high-profile character
who attracted much media attention with his high spending on the ground and team. Town won
the 1988-9 Kent League title by 14 points and set a league record of 133 goals. The club gained
promotion to the Southern League.
The next season saw another promotion as the main aim, but the club’s great run to the FA Vase
semi-finals handicapped their league ambitions, with four games a week at times, and a sixth
place finish. Hythe lost out to the eventual Vase winners Yeading, winning the home leg 3-2 in
front of the club’s record attendance of 2,147, but cruelly losing the second leg 2-0 with the crucial
goal coming from a big deflection. They did win the Eastern Professional Floodlight Cup at
their first attempt.
The following season was very similar, topping the table in November but runs in four cups again
caused fixture congestion and a final placing of eighth. Hythe lost out to Trowbridge Town in a
Vase quarter-final second replay, lost to Chelmsford City over two legs in the Southern League
Cup final, but won the Kent Senior Trophy and retained the Eastern Professional Floodlight Cup.
The club played 40 league games and 33 cup ties.
In 1991/2 Hythe again topped the table in the early months but the money was beginning to run
out. With little cup success, the exit from the Vase at Evesham United in February saw many of
the team sold and their replacements could only finish thirteenth. the club did reach the final of
the Kent Senior Cup, losing in extra-time to Bromley at Gillingham’s Priestfield Stadium. That
match proved to be Walton’s last game, and he put the club into liquidation soon after.
Supporters rallied round and entered a scratch side, as Hythe United, into the following season’s
Kent County League and negotiated continued use of Reachfields Stadium. After three seasons
the club regained senior status and in 1995 were elected back into the Kent League but the club
would struggle for a number of seasons in the wrong half of the table. In 2001 Hythe dropped the
“United” suffix, reverting to “Town” and in November 2002 appointed Paul Fisk as Manager. This
proved a turning point and Hythe became a top six club. There was one exception, in 2005/6,
when again the Vase was a distraction, winning five ties before going out to Winchester City in
the fourth round, in front of 441 spectators at Reachfields.
In season 2007/8 Hythe forced themselves to the top of the table in March and were considered
to be favourites for the title. Disappointment was acute therefore when form was lost in the final
weeks and the side not only slipped to fourth place, but also lost in the final of the League Cup.
The highlight was a fantastic FA Cup win over Andy Hessenthaler’s Dover Athletic before a
crowd of 1,109 at Reachfields, and achieving the important Ryman League ground grading.
The History of Hythe Town—Cont
TThe club achieved runners-up spot the following season and then Scott Porter, who had
been Paul Fisk’s assistant manager, took over as manager for the 2009/10 season with Clive
Cook as his assistant.
here were many good results but too many dropped points saw Hythe finish in third position.
Town also progressed through three rounds of the FA Cup to be drawn against the full-time
professionals of Woking who were relieved to escape with a replay after an exciting 2-2 draw
at Reachfields. The replay was another tight match until the last few minutes when Woking
scored three times to go through 5-1.
The 2010/11 season was possibly the most successful in the history of the club, with Scott
Porter and leading the playing side to the Kent League Championship for the first time in over
twenty years, and with it promotion to the Ryman League. After a 22-match unbeaten run in
the new-year, dropped points over Easter took the championship to the wire and the league
was clinched in dramatic style on the last day of the season through a last-minute equaliser at
Tunbridge Wells.
This amazing achievement was coupled with the club’s best ever F.A. Cup run, and the best
for any Kent League side in over 50 years. Hythe negotiated their way through six rounds, including
memorable wins over higher league opposition at Concord Rangers of the Ryman
Premier and at home to Staines Town of the Blue Square Bet South. The prize was an away
draw in the First Round Proper to League Two side Hereford United. It was one round too far
on the pitch, the hosts comfortably winning 5-1 with Gary Mickelborough getting the Hythe
goal.
During the 2011/2 season the club maintained their progress and finished in eighth place in
Ryman Division One South. Hythe were also able to get their hands on some silverware as
wins over Ebbsfleet United and Dover Athletic were followed by a single goal victory in the final
at Dartford to win the Kent Senior Cup. The following season ended with a 17-match unbeaten
run and a fourth place finish. This brought about the club’s first play-off appearance,
unfortunately losing at Faversham Town in the semi-final.
After another eighth place finish Scott Porter and Clive Cook left the club at the end of 2013/4
and Tim Dixon was appointed as manager in May 2014. It was a disappointing season that
saw the club finish in 16 th position and after a poor start to 2015-6 the club decided to part
company with Dixon in September. Clive Cook returned to take over, this time as manager
and led a remarkable turnaround from 22 nd place to fourth as the club qualified for the Ryman
South play-offs for a second time. Defeat followed at Worthing in the semi-final but the club
look to another season in Ryman Division One with optimism.
On This Day
FIFTEEN YEARS AGO, on 17 th November 2001 Sittingbourne travelled to Dartford and achieved
a second successive away win that confirmed manager Mark Beeneys views that they were a
better team away from the wide-open spaces of Central Park. “There’s such a better atmosphere
away from home. It’s so big at home that the players can’t hear me shout at them let alone the
fans.” Not only were Sittingbourne the better team, they also had more fight, determination, courage
and spirit than sorry Dartford. Andrew Drury (who played for Eastleigh in the FA Cup last
week) was dropped to substitute for this game. This was a reaction to a poor display against
Fisher in the previous match. In fact, there were six changes from that game. When Drury came
on he was determined to prove the manager was wrong not to put him in the starting eleven. Sittingbourne
won 3-0, the goals coming from Bradley Spice (2) and Leigh Hales.
Team: Hooper, Everett, Davies, Guest, Cunningham, Gooding (Drury), Marsh, Okafor, Harrison
(Ganley), Spice, King (Hales).
TEN YEARS AGO on the 14 th November 2006, we played Maidstone United in the Kent Senior
Cup at Bourne Park. This was a subdued Kent Senior Cup encounter, especially in the first half,
despite this being the first competitive encounter between "Tenants" and Landlords". Both sides
made several changes from the starting line ups from their respective league games the previous
Saturday. Sittingbourne played “young” Hicham Akhazzan. Akhazzan, tipped for a bright future,
was making his first start since joining from Chatham Town. Maidstone played 6 who had played
in their previous league match. Maidstone had the liveliest player on view in the shape of Alex
Tiesse and Maidstone were definitely looking hungrier than the Brickies. Sittingbourne really
should have taken the lead when Kam Singh found himself with a 1 against 1 with Stones keeper
Michal Czanner but Czanner did well to block the ball. Singh then had almost a replay in the first
minute of the second half but again Czanner was equal to it. Despite the Brickies pressure it was
the Stones who got their noses in front as Hegley cut inside and found Tiesse who fired past Michael
Elder. Four minutes later an Aaron Lacy long throw was as good as a corner when Lee
Shearer connected with it and thumped a header in the Brickies net to put the Stones 2 up. Maidstone
then put the game out of reach of the Brickies when a cracking shot by Errison Ahwan flew
past Elder before the young Brickies keeper had time to move.
Team: Michael Elder, Matt Nicholl, Reece Jacob, Paul Ainsworth, Toby Ashmore, Tristan
Knowles, Ricky Spiller, Clint Gooding, Jon Neal, Kam Singh, Hicham Akhazzan. Subs: Mitchell
Sherwood, Steve Deveraux, Kieran Marsh and Steve Williams.
FIVE YEARS AGO, on 12 th November, Sittingbourne visited Whyteleafe. Sittingbourne had won
8 of the last 9 encounters with the Leafe, the other being drawn. Sittingbourne were comfortably
in the lead with goals from Hicham Akhazzan and Joe Goldsmith until the last few minutes when
a moment of poor sportsmanship from Whyteleafe turned the game. Joe Goldsmith went down
with a head injury. The referee allowed the Leafe to restart the game expecting, as we all did,
that they would send the ball forward to Matt Reed in the Brickies goal, but the ball was hit so
hard that it hit Ryan Cooper on the back, the ball rebounded to a Leafe player whose shot was
turned around for a corner by Reed and from the corner they pulled a goal back when Danny
Dudley struck the ball in the net. The bad feeling caused by this boiled over a couple of minutes
later by the Brickies goal line and Leafe won another corner, and from that corner the ball was
struck past Reed by substitute Stephan Enamoreto give the Surrey side a point.
Team: Matt Read, Ryan Cooper, Dan Palfrey, Jerry Nmnamani, Sam Groombrifge (Jonathan
Hogg), Bryan Glover, Jaie Nuttall, Joe Goldsmith, Luke Girt, Ellie Kayembe, Hicham Akhazzan.
Subs not used: Anthony Hogg, Cedric Abraham, Bradley Spice and Tim Roberts.

Sittingbourne 2 Corinthian-Casuals 1 att 90
Sittingbourne turned in what I thought was their
best performance of the season to see off topsix
side Corinthian Casuals.
They played with character and determination,
especially as they were reduced to 10 men early
in the second half when Stefan Wright was
sent off.
The back four were tremendous with centrebacks
Jono Richardson and Dan Tanner rocksolid
and full-backs Sam Welch and Tom
Carlse, often unsung heroes, terrific in defence
and as well as in going forward.
All in all it was such an improved performance
on Saturday when they lost disappointingly to a
Guernsey side who weren’t a patch on Corinthian
Casuals.
Sittingbourne again had to make a change in
goal with experienced ex-Tunbridge Wells
keeper, Slovakian-born Michal Czanner, coming
in to replace Simon Overland, who got injured
at Guernsey. He’s the fourth Number One Sittingbourne
have had this season, well five if you
count Danny Rumbol who stood in for the opening
minutes of one game, or six if you include
pre-season when Adam Molloy played. They
also recalled Tanner in defence and Tom Brunt
to wide right.
Casuals started well, full of pace and passing,
and Czanner made a couple of good early
saves to calm any nerves on his debut.
And it was Sittingbourne who took the lead on
19 minutes after a terrible hashed clearance by
a Casuals defender. Steven Ita, week by week
getting back to the form that made him such an
asset last season, ran the ball at the retreating
defence and at exactly the right time laid it off
for Brunt to stroke home his first goal of the
season.
It became much more end to end after that,
Richardson forcing a good save from the keeper
with a header from a corner and Joe Loft
driving a shot over the bar.
EQUALITY -
At the other end Czanner made an
excellent one-handed save to scoop the ball off
the line and Casuals also hit the bar through
Clark.
Sittingbourne got a vital second at the end of
the half, Ricky Gundry finding Ita in the area,
and after he dummied his way into space his
low drive was diverted in by the hard-working
Loft for his first goal for the club.
Casuals were certain to come back strongly in
the second half and they were given a huge
helping hand in the 49th minute when Wright
got a straight red for a reckless tackle.
They pulled a goal back seven minutes later
when a Sittingbourne attack unluckily broke
down as the ball hit Welch’s heels, and Casuals
whisked it down the other end where a left-wing
cross was headed in by the smallest player on
the field, Byatt.
Sittingbourne had to dig in, and they did, retreating
slightly too deep sometimes but still
looking dangerous on the occasional counter,
especially when young subs Jake Emery and
Josh Wisson got involved.
Casuals ended with 10 men themselves after a
player was carried off when all three subs had
already been used, and despite them seeing a
lot of the ball they couldn’t really penetrate Sittingbourne’s
stern defensive line.
Sittingbourne have had a bad habit this season
of conceding crucial late goals but they rounded
off an excellent night’s work by making sure
they didn’t on this occasion to hold out for a
welcome win after three home defeats in succession.
The win puts them back in the top half of the
Ryman South table and should help them put
an under-par October well and truly behind
them.
Sittingbourne: Michal Czanner, Sam Welch,
“The Ryman Football League strongly support recent FA statement that there should be a zero
tolerance approach against racism and all forms of discrimination. Accordingly any form of
discriminatory abuse whether it be based on race or ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender, faith,
age, ability or any other form of abuse will be reported to The Football Association for action
by that Association.” (Useful numbers:-The FA 0800 085 0508 / Kick it Out 020 7253 0162)

Ryman League Div 1 South
Sittingbourne 2 Chatham Town 2, Att 153
How weird that Sittingbourne have won, drawn
and lost in the last week but the one they won
was against by far the best opponents.
Sittingbourne were so on top in the first half of
this game that it was amazing they only led by a
goal, but in the end they just about scraped a
point thanks to an 88th minute own goal.
Chatham are third bottom in the league and the
table doesn’t lie, but they escaped up the A2
with the draw as a reward for a determined second
half recovery.
In a bitingly cold wind and with the floodlights
on from the start, it felt like the first day of winter
at Woodstock as Sittingbourne endeavoured to
follow up on an excellent midweek win over
high-riding Corinthian Casuals.
They made one change from that team, Hicham
Akhazzan coming in for Tom Brunt, with Michal
Czanner continuing in as stand-in goalkeeper
for the injured Simon Overland.
Sittingbourne started as if they were going to
overwhelm Chatham, a team they always seem
to do well against.
The approach work wasn’t matched by the finishing,
though, with Jordan Gallacher, Steven
Ita, Ricky Gundry and Jono Richardson all
missing the target with good chances.
Chatham were rocking but Czanner did have to
pull off one decent diving save in a rare breakaway
attack.
Sittingbourne took a deserved and overdue
lead on the half-hour when Akhazzan cleverly
played in Gundry and although he was driven
slightly wide he thumped a goal from a narrowing
angle past the club he started the season
with.
The second half looked like being more of the
same as Sittingbourne drove forward but they
conceded a 48th minute goal from their own
corner. The ball went back to Joe
Loft and he laid it off to Stefan Wright on the
halfway line. But Wright hesitated fractionally
and then unluckily slipped, allowing Jackson to
race away unchallenged on goal and score
well.
Poor old Wright, who plays with so much commitment,
had a dreadful week – sent off on
Tuesday, gave a goal away and was then substituted
here, meaning he ended both matches
sloping off down the tunnel early with his head
bowed.
There’s nothing like a goal to give a team confidence
and suddenly it was Chatham pushing
forward and Sittingbourne unable to regain a
foothold in a game they’d been dominating.
And it got worse for Sittingbourne on 73
minutes when a shot was blocked but fell just
right for Medley to put Chatham into the lead.
A second 2-1 defeat on successive Saturdays
to a team struggling near the foot of the table
looked to be on the cards.
But Sittingbourne rescued at least the one point
with two minutes left. Sub Conrad Lee hit a brilliant
cross from wide out and although Gundry
just missed it with his attempted header – he’d
have loved to score that one – he must have
unsighted Chatham defender Patterson on the
far post and the ball hit him and bounced into
his own goal.
A point saved, and one that keeps Sittingbourne
in the top half of the table – and not
a single fireworks day reference, yet, to a game
that started and finished with a bang but was a
bit of a damp squib in between.
Sittingbourne: Michal Czanner, Sam Welch,
Tom Carlse, Dan Tanner, Jono Richardson, Joe
Loft (Yellow card), Hicham Akhazzan (Dan Parkinson,
56 min), Stefan Wright (Jake Embery,
82 min), Ricky Gundry (Yellow card), Steven
Ita, Jordan Gallacher (Conrad Lee, 70 min).
WORK HARD. PLAY HARDER.
www.macron.com
IT’S a conundrum we’re faced with more and more. Ground re-naming; from the bet365 Stadium
to the Sports Direct Arena, we’re stuck between a rock and a hard place where supporters would
rather stay with tradition, while the commercial bean-counters want to see make the most of the
money they are pouring into the club – and the naming of the ground offers the perfect opportunity
to do this.
The re-naming of grounds is big business these days. But for some supporters, it’s a big issue.
Sponsored partners coming into a club and splashing their branding all over the place leaves a
sour taste with the fans coming through the turnstiles.
Like it or not, sponsorship oils the wheels of the modern-day game. But if you feel uncomfortable
about having your favourite place transformed into the so-and-so.com Arena, well you aren’t
alone.
Selling off the naming rights doesn’t always sit easy, so when the supporters aren’t happy, what
do the press do?
Clubs, of course, want the media to refer to their home by its new commercial title. They’ve just
struck a deal and want everyone to know about it.
You could argue they give us access; we sell papers by being pitchside, so it’s only right we respect
their wishes in copy. If a company wants to back a Non-League club in such a way, then
they surely deserve their name on our pages?
It’s an awkward one from the press’ point of view as well. We’re always keen to help, but upsetting
supporters by removing the historic ground name they’ve always known from their favourite
paper? Now we’ve got ourselves a moral dilemma.
Some may argue us giving good coverage to clubs is enough. The media aren’t there to promote
products, especially when our own commercial activity isn’t been boosted by plugging insurance
companies or a well-known florist.
But with shirt sponsors’ logos and advertising hoardings seen in our pictures, are we doing
enough already without risking the wrath of our readers? I think if you asked any journalist, they
would rather stick to the traditions for the sake of making their copy easier to digest.
There still doesn’t seem to be a right answer. But as ground names and historic competitions become
more and more barmy (the Checkatrade Trophy or the Carabao Energy Drink League Cup
anyone?) the more difficult things become. Alex Narey
