THE FUTURE OF BURA
The history of Bura
Several years ago, we noticed something wrong with the ski & snowboard
holiday industry.
It was a rich person's game and we weren't rich. We were just a normal
group of mates in our twenties. We wanted to go and play in the
mountains but couldn’t afford a thousand pounds for the privilege of doing
so.
We were starting to enjoy the finer things in life a little too much to cram
12 of us into a self-catered apartment or camper van, living on cold tins of
beans as we had done a few years before. However, we weren't bothered
about champagne, canapés or silver service.
We wanted informal. We wanted to feel like we were hanging out in a
mates house, but thought it might be a bit of a treat if everything was
getting done for us...we were going on holiday after all!
We couldn't find a place like that so we set it up ourselves and Bura Snow
was born in 2008 at Chalet Mouflon, a ramshackle but charming small
chalet in La Rosiere, France.
Over the following years we have applied that original ethos across
multiple properties, which also now includes new ski chalets and a large
backpackers hostel/surf camp in Lagos, Portugal.
The resulting success has now led us to a position where we can continue
to grow, whilst focussing on our long term commitment to sustainability.

Accommodation
Be it a Portuguese villa, a Moroccan beachfront house or a traditional
Savoyard mountain chalet, all of our properties embrace the local
architecture.
The interiors of our properties are designed in our unique Bura style,
using inspirations from our travels and adventure sports cultures by
using upcycled and salvaged materials where possible, all with the
ultimate aim of creating a home-from-home for our guests.
We offer a range of accommodation across our properties from
ensuite double bedrooms with private balconies to shared dorm
rooms. Communal spaces are key to Bura properties; somewhere for
our guests to come together, meet new people and socialise, setting
us apart from hotels and guest houses.
Food & Drink
At Bura we take culinary inspiration from our own global
travels and the local cultures in which we operate, creating
menus which blend these influences into unique and
wholesome dishes.
“Think Globally, Act Locally”
In line with our sustainability policies, we focus on offering
vegetarian alternatives, made with organic (where possible),
locally sourced produce - many of our suppliers we know
personally.
Our aim is to provide healthy, filling meals for before and after
days on the mountain or in the ocean, but which still reflect
the ‘treat yourself whilst on holiday’ mentality.
Experiences
At Bura we make things easy for our guests; taking
care of the logistics so they can just enjoy the
adventure.
We do this in all our locations, from organising
complete ‘snow virgin’ ski/snowboard packages in
the Alps, to organising adventure packages in
Portugal with surf lessons, hiking, yoga, and many
other activities the area has to offer.
Our ‘Surf-Yoga-Wine’ package has proven extremely
popular for this reason; it talks to people who want to
have an adventure but perhaps not take it too
seriously. It’s a relaxed, unintimidating approach to
extreme sports with good food and great wine.
Responsible Travel
We support goals 7, 12, 13, 14 and 15 of The UN Global Goals for Sustainable Development.
By supporting these goals we aim to become a business that operates responsibly, and either have already
committed, or will commit to the following guiding principles:
Switch to clean energy - By installing energy efficient infrastructure such as solar panels and solar hot water heaters
in our properties, and sourcing the remainder of our electricity requirements from renewable energy.
Be sustainable - Through the implementation of sustainability practices to include recycling, responsible food
sourcing, reducing plastic waste and maximising energy efficiency.
Offset carbon - By creating partnerships with global environmental organisations we intend to move toward
complete carbon neutrality through support of carbon sequestration initiatives such as afforestation.
Support local charities - We would like to support environmental charities that work in the locations in which we
operate; to aid the protection of local habitats.
We plan to carry out these actions through the creation of the Bura Earth Foundation, a charitable foundation
attached to Bura Travel, through which we will support these environmental causes and which will inform our
environmental policy.
Amazing snow, food and people
“Firstly we were blown away by the chalet hosts, Brent and Nick
were top lads and even better chefs. All in all, I would definitely
recommend Bura Snow, we had a cracking time, the food was
awesome and the chalet was top notch”
Guests
Our guests represent a wide spectrum of people from
all over the world. Typically they are an older age
group than usually found in traditional backpacker
establishments - our average guest age being 27 -
which is reflected in our company personality.
We attract guests looking for more than just a place to
stay, they want lasting memories and relationships.
Many of them are repeat bookers, or many extend
their stays, and we even have had more more than a
few who came as guests, never left and became
permanent staff.
The guests we attract perfectly represent the Bura
mentality.
Staff
Bura is all about relationships, and creating an
environment where our guests feel not only that they get
a great service, but that they are part of our family.
For our seasonal staff, personality, motivation,
enthusiasm and love for people and travel are essential
in maintaining the Bura ethos throughout our locations,
and thus they are selected on these merits rather than
any particular education or previous work history.
We believe in nurturing the strengths and talents of all
our staff by giving them opportunities to grow with the
company, with emphasis on mutual responsibility for
learning, developing initiative and creating a team of
confident and competent staff who share the company’s
values and embody these day to day in their roles,
always going the extra mile for our guests. Testament to
this, almost all our seasonal summer staff return either
for the winter season or the following summer.

Our Market-
Potential for growth
In 2012, $217 billion of the $1.088 trillion tourism “spend” worldwide came from young
travelers. Young travelers now represent 20% of international tourism.
Amsterdam-based World Youth Student and Educational Travel Confederation.
The number of wave surfers worldwide increased from 26 million to 35 million between
2001 and 2011 and it is still growing at a steady pace.
The Economist.
Figures suggest the UK has a total market 6.3 million skiers and snowboarders, of which
around 2 million are currently active (i.e. they have participated in the last 12 months).
The future of Bura
Company restructure - We are in the process of bringing all of our companies
together under the umbrella of a new operational holding company which will
be incorporated in the Netherlands.
This will centralise the administration while facilitating independent property
management and joint venture ownership among the subsidiary companies.
Increasing property portfolio - A second hostel/surf camp in Sagres, Portugal is
scheduled to open in the Spring of 2017, while Bura Surfhouse in Mirleft,
Morocco, is also scheduled to open in 2017. A third chalet is planned to open
in the French ski resort of La Plagne for the 2017/2018 ski season. Bura Spain
will also be incorporated, with new properties planned for development in
2018 with locations such as Seville, San Sebastian or Tarifa under
consideration.
We are planning a Staff Training Academy to ensure our continued expansion
can always be facilitated by staff trained in-house who have a full
understanding of Bura ethos, standards and procedures.
We are committed to establishing the Bura Earth Foundation - a non-profit
organisation which will provide a channel for all charitable actions at Bura. We
would like this to include the support of local environmental causes, the
creation of valuable volunteer opportunities for our guests, building
partnerships with global charities to tackle climate change and informing our
enviromental policies.
Best place ever!
"Bura is the best place I have ever stayed! In over 30 countries I
have never felt so at home. Family is an understatement... I felt
closer to the Bura family than I do my own... Do yourself a favor
and stay here, even if it´s just for the people! I love it and will, for
sure be back!"
