Notes: The “Strong heel” was developed by Gerdine Crawford-
Strong and first published in the Fall 2003 issue of Knitter’s
Magazine. This heel does not require picking up stitches along
a heel flap. Because of the constructions it is not the snuggest
fitting heel, which is why this pattern uses a 1x1 rib instead of
using the more common Stockinette stitch.
If working the larger foot circumference for a foot size greater
than a US Women’s size 8.5 (or if working a longer cuff) you may
require additional yarn.
1x1 Rib (worked in the round over an even number of sts)
All Rnds: *K1, P1; rep from * to end of rnd.
Broken Rib (in the round over an even number of sts)
Round 1: Knit.
Round 2: *K1, P1; rep from * to end of rnd.
Rep Rnds 1-2 for pattern.
M1 (Make 1)
PU the bar between st just worked and next st and place on LH
needle as a regular st; knit through the back loop.
Kitchener Stitch
Hold needles parallel, with WS’s facing in and both needles
pointing to the right. Perform Step 2 on the first front st,
and then Step 4 on the first back st, and then continue with
instructions below.
1: Pull yarn needle K-wise through front st and drop st from
knitting needle.
2: Pull yarn needle P-wise through next front st, leave st on
knitting needle.
3: Pull yarn needle P-wise through first back st and drop st from
knitting needle.
4: Pull yarn needle K-wise through next back st, leave st on
knitting needle.
Repeat steps 1-4 until all sts have been grafted.
desired total length.
once more. 4 sts dec.
Round 2: Knit.
Rounds 3 to 6: Work Rounds 1 and 2 twice more. 18 (22) sts.
Rounds 7 and 8: *K1, SSK, K to 3 sts before M, K2tog, K1, SM; rep
from * once more. 10 (14) sts.
Finishing
There are now 5 (7) sts for the top and 5 (7) sts for the bottom
of the toe section. Arrange these sts on two needles and hold
parallel. Graft the top and bottom sts together using Kitchener
Stitch. Weave in ends, wash and block.
Heel
Strong Heel
The heel section is shaped by a series of increases and decreases
over a multiple of 2 plus 1 sts. Keep the increased sts in the 1x1 rib
pattern already established.
Working new stitch into ribbing pattern: You want to keep the
flow of the 1x1 ribbing. To do this the M1 sts will need to become
either a knit or a purl on the following rnd. The M1’s on the
first increase rnd will become knit sts. The M1’s on the next rnd
becomes a purl st, and so forth.
About the Designer
Born and raised on eastern Long
Island, NY, Erica Jackofsky grew up
surrounded by the arts— performing
(playing fiddle, flatfoot dancing, and
singing) and traveling around the
country with her family band, The
Homegrown String Band. During her
travels, Erica discovered knitting and crocheting and it wasn’t
long before the kid who fiddles to a different drummer was
accumulating a yarn stash and designing her own projects. In
early 2009 Erica established Fiddle Knits Designs and began to
focus her energies on designing and creating original patterns
inspired by music
