5.4 <str<strong>on</strong>g>Safe</str<strong>on</strong>g> child pedestrian tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g (SCPT)<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>Safe</str<strong>on</strong>g> child pedestrian tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g is a practical tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g for the young children for us<strong>in</strong>g road<br />

safely. Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g was c<strong>on</strong>ducted for grade I <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> II students <strong>in</strong> some selected primary schools,<br />

close to the project locati<strong>on</strong>s.<br />

Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g was c<strong>on</strong>ducted by volunteer teachers. Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g was c<strong>on</strong>ducted <strong>in</strong> two major parts. First<br />

<strong>on</strong>e was 10-15 m<strong>in</strong>utes classroom discussi<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> flip chart <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> then 15-20 m<strong>in</strong>utes practical<br />

dem<strong>on</strong>strati<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> road. A batch of four children was formed by the tra<strong>in</strong>er. At least four sessi<strong>on</strong>s<br />

were c<strong>on</strong>ducted with each batch for mak<strong>in</strong>g the tra<strong>in</strong>ee children graduate. C<strong>on</strong>sider<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

challenge <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> risk of tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>on</strong> the highway, village road was used for practical dem<strong>on</strong>strati<strong>on</strong><br />

with demo zebra cross<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Day l<strong>on</strong>g tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g of tra<strong>in</strong>ers (ToT) was organized for the volunteer teachers. Necessary<br />

materials <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> logistics like flip chart, tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g manual, safety vest for teachers <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> students<br />

were distributed before start<strong>in</strong>g the tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g. This activity was c<strong>on</strong>ducted <strong>on</strong> May-June<br />

2015. Total eligible children were 181 <strong>in</strong> all the selected schools <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> am<strong>on</strong>g them, 116<br />

(64% overall) were completed the tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g successfully.<br />

5.5 Video show<br />

As an <strong>in</strong>dispensable part of awareness <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> educati<strong>on</strong> program, <strong>in</strong>teractive popular theatre (video<br />

show) was c<strong>on</strong>ducted for the school children. Focus<strong>in</strong>g some key road safety messages, a 20 m<strong>in</strong>utes<br />

video clip was developed. This is a very effective method for provid<strong>in</strong>g messages <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> mak<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

young children aware to be a safe road user. Students of grade IV-VIII were the target group.<br />

Around project locati<strong>on</strong>s, there are 7 primary <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> 1 comb<strong>in</strong>ed (primary <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> sec<strong>on</strong>dary) schools.<br />

Around 1200 students are enrolled <strong>in</strong> those school. Through c<strong>on</strong>ducted 20 number of shows, all<br />

the targeted students were covered. Us<strong>in</strong>g multimedia projector <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> digital sound system, shows<br />

were c<strong>on</strong>ducted <strong>in</strong> the classroom while generator ensured un<strong>in</strong>terrupted power supply.<br />

Introductory discussi<strong>on</strong>, knowledge assessment through pre- <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> post-test, display<strong>in</strong>g of<br />

show <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> post show discussi<strong>on</strong> was the major activities of the video show.<br />

5.6 CNG drivers’ orientati<strong>on</strong><br />

Basel<strong>in</strong>e f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs revealed that CNGs are directly <strong>in</strong>volved with more than half of total road<br />

crashes <strong>in</strong> the project locati<strong>on</strong>s. Based <strong>on</strong> this f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs, project organized orientati<strong>on</strong> for the<br />

CNG drivers. The events <strong>in</strong>cluded display<strong>in</strong>g pictures <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> videos of some crashes <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> near<br />

crashes <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> participatory discussi<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> 10 basic safe less<strong>on</strong>s <strong>on</strong> road safety.<br />

CNG drivers were identified from the drivers’ associati<strong>on</strong>s close to project locati<strong>on</strong>s who were<br />

selected by the secretary of the associati<strong>on</strong>. 120 Drivers were r<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g>omly selected from different<br />

four associati<strong>on</strong>s (Nilkuthi, Taluk K<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g>i, Baroicha <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Narayanpur). Current drivers who were<br />

runn<strong>in</strong>g their CNG were participated <strong>in</strong> the orientati<strong>on</strong>. Each group c<strong>on</strong>sisted of 10 members.<br />

The event c<strong>on</strong>ducted <strong>in</strong> two phase. In the first phase, some pictures <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> videos of crashes <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

near crash' were illustrated. Mak<strong>in</strong>g pledge by the drivers for become a safe driver was the topic<br />

of sec<strong>on</strong>d phase.<br />
