Highway Intervention Program The traffic calming adaptations were based on best-practices, applied to the specific situation of the black spots in Bangladesh. After consultation with international experts it was concluded that the first priority was to significantly reduce the speed of fast-moving motorized traffic. To achieve this goal, the selected measures in the program (speed humps, rumble strips, supplemented by signs <strong>and</strong> markings) were the most effective measures that are at the same time relatively low-cost <strong>and</strong> sustainable. Installing a footbridge for example would have been quite costly <strong>and</strong> it is questionable how many pedestrians would have used the foot over bridge. 4.2 Activities 4.2.1 Approval from ministry The Project has got approval from the ministry of road transport <strong>and</strong> bridges on 26th May 2014. Prior to that approval there were several meetings held in RHD Technical service wing <strong>and</strong> ministry for discussing the design <strong>and</strong> other aspects of the project. The meeting participants checked the feasibility of the design <strong>and</strong> effectiveness in the highway. All of the participants were made assured by local <strong>and</strong> foreign expert that the project would be highly beneficial for the country. The ministry gave the final confirmation with a condition of not using any name of CIPRB or <strong>Safe</strong> <strong>Crossing</strong>s in project locations which was followed very strictly later on. 4.2.2 Mobilization The contractor was awarded of the contract on 11th September 2014 <strong>and</strong> the contractor has started preparatory works for mobilization of their resources. Significant progress in the procurement of materials <strong>and</strong> hiring equipment was being made in time. Road Side unauthorized shop were being removed with the help of RHD on 16th September 2014. All site was being cleared <strong>and</strong> made ready for intervention.
