Speed Management and Safe Crossing on Dhaka-Sylhet Highway (N2) in Bangladesh

Highway Intervention Program
The traffic calming adaptations were based on best-practices, applied to the specific situation of
the black spots in Bangladesh. After consultation with international experts it was concluded that
the first priority was to significantly reduce the speed of fast-moving motorized traffic. To achieve
this goal, the selected measures in the program (speed humps, rumble strips, supplemented by signs
<strong>and</strong> markings) were the most effective measures that are at the same time relatively low-cost <strong>and</strong>
sustainable. Installing a footbridge for example would have been quite costly <strong>and</strong> it is questionable
how many pedestrians would have used the foot over bridge.
The design of the small-scale infrastructural measures was made by leading road safety experts in
Bangladesh with the help of Grontmij, a leading engineering company in the Netherl<strong>and</strong>s.
