SafeCentral (formerly Authentium), he successfully established an international quality<br />

assurance and product development organization, before stepping into a role as an internal<br />

consultant for the CTO and COO, advising on product development, competitive analysis and<br />

product certifications. Marcel holds a PhD in experimental nuclear physics, earned through<br />

research done at University of Groningen, the Netherlands.<br />

Michael WAIDNER<br />

Michael Waidner is one of the pioneers of Cyber Security and Microsoft Academic Search lists<br />

him among the world’s top scientific authors in the area of IT security and privacy. As a leading<br />

figure in Europe’s security scene he has successfully founded new research centers and<br />

spearheaded innovative security paradigms like “Security at Large”, which focusses on the<br />

security of complex real-existing systems. Waidner’s broad scientific and entrepreneurial<br />

background makes him a unique expert for applied security whose council is sought by the<br />

enterprise world and the political sphere alike.<br />

Currently, Waidner is the Director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Secure Information<br />

Technology (Fraunhofer SIT) in Darmstadt, Germany. He holds a chair as professor for Security<br />

in Information Technology at the Technical University of Darmstadt and is also the Director of<br />

the Center for Advanced Security Research Darmstadt (CASED), Speaker of the Center for<br />

Research in Security and Privacy (CRISP), and founding Director of the Fraunhofer Project<br />

Center for Cybersecurity at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem (Fraunhofer SIT/IL@HUJI).<br />

He started in 1986 as a researcher at the University of Karlsruhe (now Karlsruhe Institute of<br />

Technology), Karlsruhe, Germany, where he received his Diploma and Doctorate in Computer<br />

Science. In 2004 he moved to Rüschlikon in Switzerland to join IBM, where he held various<br />

technical and management positions. As a Senior Manager he was responsible for IBM Zurich's<br />

security and software research projects, and for IBM Research's global agenda in security and<br />

privacy. During that time he co-initiated the IBM Privacy Research Institute, which he led until<br />

2006, and the Zurich Information Security Center (ZISC), a joint research center hosted by the<br />

Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH). In 2006 he joined the IBM Software Group in<br />

Somers, NY, USA. Until 2010 he was an IBM Distinguished Engineer and the Chief Technology<br />

Officer for Security, responsible for the technical security strategy and architecture of the IBM<br />

Corporation.<br />

Michael Waidner regularly participates in scientific and technical advisory boards, program<br />

committees and conferences. He is a member of the ESORICS Steering Committee, and co-<br />
