Mobility-as-a-Service, a promising concept<br />

3.2.2 Invest in automation<br />

In the long run, automation leads to new revenues: driverless car owners will be able to share<br />

their vehicle on a single platform. This reduces the cost of car ownership since the vehicle is<br />

rented when not used by the owner.<br />

Automated mobility can yield several advantages:<br />

Make traffic safer, reduce the risk of congestion and reduce the overall space occupied<br />

by cars, parked or in motion;<br />

Offer greater mobility and benefits for an aging population and disabled persons;<br />

Make public transport cheaper and more available. This means that public transport can<br />

become available also at low demand times, and in low demand areas, where traditional<br />

public transport is not convenient;<br />

Open up new scenarios for shared vehicles. Electric autonomous vehicles can reposition<br />

themselves and pick up new passengers, or autonomously reach a recharging point<br />

when needed. This is akin to a taxi service, but without taxi drivers;<br />

Create new job opportunities in the automotive, technology, telecommunication, and<br />

freight industry, thereby generating economic development.<br />

To make an efficient transition, the Cluster for Logistic needs real time logistical data and traffic<br />

conditions provided by a strong ICT infrastructure and know-how (where Luxembourg is a<br />
