Dear Colleagues
As the health and human services sectors continue to go through an
unprecedented period of change, there are exciting opportunities to think
differently about how to better support those living with dementia. Many of the
providers we have been working with have sought to fundamentally transform
their organisations through the close collaboration of staff, consumers and their
families. As a result of the successful consultancy work we have done over recent
years we have now developed the BIRCH pathway which forms a visual
representation of new opportunities for change and growth, encouraging
engagement across the whole organisation.
Equally, our Certificate IV in Dementia Practice course continues to be highly
successful in preparing staff to be leaders in driving change. This ensures services
can continue to be responsive to the needs of people living with dementia while
encouraging their autonomy and enablement.
We are pleased to be able to offer you ongoing access to the most contemporary evidence-based dementia
practice through an annual professional development subscription that will enable you to access a complete
suite of learning resources.
We have also comprehensively updated the fully funded Dementia Essentials course which Alzheimer’s
Australia now delivers nationally as part of Dementia Training Australia. This consortium brings together
leading dementia education specialists from across the country and will for the first time provide access to a
national suite of dementia education. The other members of the consortium include the Universities of
Wollongong, Western Australia, Latrobe, Tasmania and Queensland University of Technology.
Finally, in October we will be hosting the 17th Biennial national Alzheimer’s Australia dementia conference in
Melbourne with the theme “Be the Change”.
This conference will bring together local and international leaders in dementia practice to consider how we can
all “be the change” in improving the lives of people living with dementia.
We know that each organisation and individual has different needs and for this reason I recommend you
contact one of our customer relations consultants who have extensive knowledge of our services and are
familiar with the range of issues confronting providers.
TECHNOLOGY
Virtual Dementia Experience
The multi-award winning Virtual Dementia Experience is an
immersive, interactive virtual reality experience that invades the
senses and takes people into the world of a person living with
dementia, simulating thoughts, fears and challenges.
The Virtual Dementia Experience TM forms part of a two hour
workshop and uses multi-sensory stimulation to demonstrate
the effects of ageing and dementia, giving participants an
appreciation of the issues confronting people with dementia.
The process enables attendees to understand the
environmental elements that are friendly or hostile, by allowing
them to experience a home environment in the same way a
person with dementia would. Participants are encouraged to
reflect on their own approach to dementia support and to think
about ways in which they can make their own environments
more supportive.
It has been experienced by more than 3,000 people including
professional and family carers, healthcare professionals, aged
care executives, architects, community leaders and Victorian
and Federal politicians. The response so far from participants
has been remarkable. For some it is the first time they have
realised some of the challenges faced by people living with
dementia.
Award-winning
technology only
available
at Alzheimer’s
Australia Vic
“I had an 8 hour shift in the facility the
next day and I was able to use the
experience several times, in different
ways, throughout the day. It was such
an incredible feeling!”− Participant
The Virtual Forest TM
NEW
PROGRAM
The Virtual Forest TM co-designed with Lifeview
Aged Care Residence is a sensory application
designed to improve the quality of life of
people living with dementia through the use of
video game technology. The resident is seated
and through the use of kinetic technology and
gentle movement they can guide and change
the scenery, interacting with the fish, mother
duck and her ducklings, butterflies and boat.
The Virtual Forest TM is designed to place the
person with dementia in control of their
experience.
The Virtual Forest TM is supported by an
e-learning program that guides residential
aged care staff on how to optimise the
experience for the resident. The program
explores dementia and the impact on
communication and how The Virtual Forest TM
can create a unique opportunity for
TECHNOLOGY
The Dementia-Friendly Home App
Make the home more accessible for a person living with dementia
Based on the Dementia Enabling Environment Principles, The Dementia-Friendly Home App recommends practical
changes that prompt a carer to think about how the home can be changed in a way that may assist the person living
with dementia. Many of the app suggestions are small and inexpensive ideas, such as placing labels with pictures
on cupboard doors. More significant changes include installing motion sensors that turn lights on and off when
people walk through the house, and changing busily patterned wall or floor coverings.
This app offers insights into how the home environment can impact on a person’s level of independence and how
even small changes can help to enable a person living with dementia.
The Dementia-Friendly
Home App is available
for iPad and iPhone
through the App
Store, or for Android
tablets through the
Google Play Store. It
costs $2.99.
